F that. I'm taking my unopened package to the Apple Store and ask if I can get a white one instead :P

The white iPhone is just so damn sexy in person.

Once you go black, you'll want to play hackeysack. Not with the phone, of course.

Good gravy, Whitta! You're gonna be in the hospital before Friday.

Edit: This thread title really should change to "Garry Whitta and the iPhone 4S". While we all have questions and answers, I think most of us are now here just to watch him go though more mood swings than a pregnant woman over this device.

Restricting? You keep contradicting yourself. It's 'restricting' because you can't add ONE more icon to your dock- yet you're upset that iOS uses the entire screen for icons, and point to the desktop metaphor, wanting almost the entire screen to be composed of a useless background. That's what the lockscreen is for. I've got multiple android devices, and there's nothing more efficient than iOS in terms of getting in and out of apps. iOS5 is jailbreakable- why the hell don't you just jailbreak it again to get the precious 5 dock back? You seem to be bitching for the sake of it, without any real, tangible substance behind the complaints. Just 'it woud be cool to be able to do X, even though I admit X is completely useless'. The sales of iPhones/iPads confirm that most people don't care about this level of customizability, especially when its at the expense of consistency/stability.

How is it contradicting myself that I like flexibility? I've gotten so used to 5 Dock, that not having that additional icon there makes it feel restrictive. How is that hard to understand? The point at the heart of it all was that not all jailbreak customizing is pointless or ugly. There is use. Just because people make things look bad doesn't mean there isn't a good use. I don't jailbreak at the moment because it's a tethered jailbreak. Plus, how is it efficient to go in and out of multiple apps instead of looking at one screen? That's a contradiction for your claim. Plus, let's not equate sales to quality. One does not equal the other.

I understand the desire for customizability in theory, I just so rarely see a customized UI that looks or works better than the standard one.
I agree with this but I also agree with the people who say the iOS UI is getting kinda stale after all these years.

I don't use them personally, but at least on Android you have the choice to customize the screens to your liking. The iOS homescreens are the laziest design ever, yeah let's just barf all the icons on the screen. Don't tell me that's what your computer desktop looks like also. I don't know how iOS users put up with it.

I wouldn't personally put something like this on my homescreen either, but give me a ring if iPhone ever can
That's violently terrible. I've always been a huge fan of the WP7 style lock screen. I hate the "notification drawer" style of Android and iOS. In my dream world, iPhone would combine the UI smarts of Apple with the aesthetic sensibilities of the Metro team.

I'm that wonderful/awful place where I'm clicking the order status way too many times. Still nowhere near as bad as the psychos on MacRumors who obsessively call FedEx and are basically gibbering wrecks until their phones arrive.

GF has decided she wants a 4S too (white, just to fuck with me!) so we might go to the Apple Store on Sat/Sun (if I'm still alive after the 24-hour podcast) to see what the situation is. My guess is: fucked.

I'm hoping Best Buy is sold out on Friday when I head there in the afternoon. I keep on telling myself I don't need a contract, but I really want the Iphone 4S. I'll probably break down and buy one if they have it in stock (64GB model).

I didn't want to re-up with Verizon, but I couldn't resist. I'm getting off Android to return to my glorious iOS masters. I am pretty excited to have an iPhone again and even more excited that it one with the iPhone 4 design. It is far and beyond my favorite smart phone design by any company so far.

The man whose iPod popularized pearly white plastic for chic electronics design? Who made white the standard color for all Apple accessories? I think not!

I'd stick with black. I've seen both in person and the white is indeed scrumptious, but the black looks so classy and makes the screen really pop. Plus it looks awesome from the back, like a timeless slab of refined black onyx.

Or you can just get the best of both.

You know what, I think that's the way I'm gonna go. I really like that combo.

Damn son. Fucking awesome. I wasn't expecting it to respond so well to the conversation section, especially the last bit.

'You should'
'Noted'

The end part blew my mind XD!

Honestly, "at least Android has the ability to customize" isn't an insult against iOS or a plus toward Android for me at this point. The Android OS feels like it's trying to force desktop computer stuff onto a mobile device. That's all fine and dandy, but I have come to realize it's not what I want in a smart phone.

I don't see how the iOS device is lazy. It's a simple design that's extremely user friendly and intuitive. That may come at the cost of some more advanced functionality, but honestly, that's not what I'm looking for in a handheld device.

Wow, all of that stuff looks absolutely hideous. I wonder why those guys don't just buy Android phones?

Syncing? If it is the first time you need to enable wireless syncing by plugging it in to your laptop, and enabling the checkbox on the devices info page.

One problem I see with Siri and using it to schedule things is it seems to only schedule things to your default calendar. I haven't seen any way that you can tell it which calendar you want to assign it to.

Jailbreak community will find a way to make Siri work on the iPhone 4.

It'd probably be one of the more enthusiastically supported projects in recent memory.

I honestly don't think it will be too hard for the JB community to strip siri out and find a way to implement it on the iphone 4.

Where's the "places" app? Or whatever they showed during the keynote, seems interesting, is that 4s only?

I kind of hope they don't. Hacking Siri into other devices definitely shows enthusiasm and interest, however it doesn't contribute to its future r&d. I know plenty of people will be buying the 4s so it really isn't a problem, but if it is good, if it is the future basis of AI at Apple, then I want as much monitary support to go to it as reasonably possible.

It's not like Apple is hurting for cash....

Where I come from, if you obtain software you did not pay for, and was not paid for by someone on your behalf*, it is considered piracy - regardless if the company that wrote the software has a lot of money or not.

*there are other situations not covered, however Siri likely is not applicable.

Plasmid, it will be on the store tomorrow - it needs iCloud which has not officially been released/launched yet.

I'm guessing the find my friends app is either a) 4s only or b) not up yet on the iTunes store.

e:

Just read it, the card app & the find my friends app will go up on itunes 10/12

....naaaaaaaah.

1.) Apple is doing just fine and they know Siri is good. They're not waiting to see if people buy the phone before investing more (though they're already doing that).

2.) Sometimes Apple removes features simply because they're not happy with the performance they see on their end; not because the hardware can't manage the task (see: 3G and video recording). When the issue was video recording, the community simply enabled features that were that was already on the phone's OS. 3G and 2G owners benefited...and Apple continued to sell fancy new 3GS phones to their hearts content to new customers and those who wanted to upgrade.

3.) Chances are great that Siri is on the GM of iOS5 for all of the iOS devices, but disabled. It will be enabled and end-users can decide whether it's fast or slow enough to be worth keeping enabled. (See: multitasking on the 3G, which turned out to not be worth it because of how it slowed the phone)

4.) Siri will be in Apple's future plans whether i4 owners add it to their phones or not. Apple isn't some struggling 3rd party software developer baking on people who've had their phones less than 12 months plan upgrade again solely for this feature. People with i4's are going to get i5's at some point. The only question is whether they'll be playing with Siri or not between now and then.

It's built into iOS.

iOS is free for iPhone customers and always will be.

We're discussing a feature that will be disabled on the i4 for performance reasons by Apple; not some additional piece of software being sold separately in the App Store for profit. It's no different than jail-break enabling multitasking on older iPhones, MMS on the 2G or video recording on the 3G/2G.

Have some perspective.

It does not appear to be in any of the gm releases of iOS 5.

If I buy a game, and my friend gets the deluxe special edition of the game that comes with extra content, does that mean I should also get the extra content?

Didn't have the slightest white iPhone regret (I got black) until all these video reviews showed up using the white model...

Siri + Scribblenauts would be pretty incredible. They'll probably open up Siri to devs at WWDC next year.

Siri API would be amazing but I don't see how it could possibly work with the massive number of third party apps.

What happens when someone asks "What's the score of the Yankees game?" and the user has 10 different sports apps installed on their phone and they are all competing to answer the question?
