Well if you're on AT&T there is a good chance that you won't even be able to activate until Monday.

Did you call 611? I've called 3 times and talked to 3 different people and each of them was stubborn in the fact that you "have to do it through iTunes."

Yah I ordered the phone through Apple, but my service is AT&T. I just kept trying every half hour or so, finally it clicked and I was able to complete the setup. I spoke with a customer care representative earlier and she explained that their authentication server was completely overloaded with activation requests. There isn't a queue or anything, it just accepts requests as soon as a "slot" is available.

Just keep checking every 30 minutes or so until you get through, that's the best advice I can give.

EDIT: for clarification, I activated through the 4S itself, not through iTunes or through Customer Support.

I know, its making me thinking of ditching att, just cant decide. I would save roughly 15-20 a month going to sprint, just dont know how good their network is.

It was AWFUL when I was waiting for my home internet to be hooked up when I moved down here recently. Between midnight and 6am speeds were fine, but during the day half the time it barely worked at all.
 
So I get to the fedex store. Small room, there is a large group of people just laundering on the right side formed in a cluster fuck of line. The fedex people are only calling for only people with door tags. The Guy that comes in behind me butts in and goes up. I yell out "What if you don't have a door tag?" Some fedex asshole goes "Derp what did you give it to someone else? lololol". I have to go to this woman and explain why I don't have a tag. Because their incompetent delivery service I didn't receive my package at my address and had problems when I drove to one of their locations

I finally got my iPhone.

Fuck you Fedex.
 
got my sprint iphone 4S 64GB in black! went to my local apple store because the sprint store didnt have any other models except 16GB in black and white. after 2 hours of waiting (the sprint reps were helping everyone else with their activations and such), i finally ported my number back! ah man, its great to have good service once again.

AT&T here in Chapel Hill, NC, at about 6:25pm. Pretty solid.

Enjoying Siri quite a bit. Already integrating it into my regular usage, and it's amazing for simplifying research tasks.
 
So I called AT&T..

They did something.. which caused my 3gs to lose service.. and they claim in the next 2 hours my 4S is going to magically register itself.

I have my doubts.. she had no clue about why my phone is operational, lets me use wi-fi, etc.. my phone THINKS it's activated even though it isn't.. so how the fuck is it going to even know to check to see if it needs activated?

I have to ask because I'm having the unique scenario where my phone isn't activated but it's letting me use the thing over WiFi.. if I'm getting a weird error I'm going to stop trying, since my phone/sim/account is likely borked somehow anyways.

Already tried that.. just says "No Service" with no wi-fi signal.

This is crap.. I basically just called ATT so they could turn off my old phone.. there's no fucking way my phone in this "limbo" state is going to magically activate itself.

She even told me not to shut off iTunes.. as if iTunes.. which thinks my phone is registered.. is somehow pinging the activation server.

No way.. this is all BS.. I think I just lost phone service for the day.
 
After 2 hours of Sprint screwing up my phone, over the phone, I went into the store and they got everything sorted out within 15 minutes. My first iPhone! Will have to get a case or something soon, time to get some apps going now!

I didn't try that.. but now the lady at ATT told me not to turn my phone off.

Which I think is total crap anyways.. she told me that my phone would tell me to shut itself off at some point.. and that iTunes would tell me to do the same.. it all smacks of BS.

Either way the phone thinks it's activated.. because it lets me use the entire phone, even download things from App Store.. so I doubt re-booting with wi-fi off is going to matter.

I feel like I was told to wait 2 hours just so I won't call right back and say this all sounds like BS.
 
I think my Siri is broke. I try to ask it simple commands like hello and call and everything I say it responds with I'm sorry can you say that again. I didn't understand you.
 
Does anyone know how to force the iPhone to update its cell tower list? My wife is sitting next to me on her 4 and is getting 3/4 bars, im only showing 1 on the 4S :(

Are you using a headset or the phone itself? Maybe try the opposite?
 
On a hunch I re-booted my phone.. despite the ATT phone person telling me definitely NOT to do that.. (as if my phone, which wasn't connected to ATT was somehow magically going to connect itself)

Phone works now.. lol.
 
Urgh, so I came home early from work at around 1:30PM. No UPS sticker on the door, tracking status said it was still "out for delivery". So I'm patiently (lol) waiting for several hours, and now I find out they DID make an attempt for delivery. They only just updated the tracking page even though they must have attempted in the morning.

Now I want to change the delivery and have them drop it off at work.. however, since they never put a stick on the door I'm missing the info notice number required to get this thing changed. Frustrating. Calling, but on hold with UPS now..

I got my iPhone 4S deliver 2 hours ago and am really happy about it. I stayed away from this thread to contain my hype lol. I have read threw quite a few pages and have not seen anyone discussing my question so i decided to post it.

Basically this is my first iPhone and i have never owned an ipod touch. Does anyone know how to change the recording format on the 4S? Specifically i am looking to toggle between 720p or 1080p for video footage. I have searched the internet for a good 30 minutes and can not seem to find a solution. Would appreciate it a lot if someone could help.
 
Got my 4S! No thanks to Rogers/Fido online reservation system.

At 2PM after wallowing in pity all morning that I'd never get the phone for days, I decided to just call the store. Huh? They had a bunch just sitting around! So much for online preorders meaning a damn!

Rushed down there and picked it up. Surfing on a bus right now and it's so fast!
 
So glad my black 16GB came this morning :) Everything's in working order except the Verizon site is fucking up and I can't activate it online. Not going to the store right now because I KNOW they have to be packed :/

Marty Chinn argues that an iPhone replacement costs $199, while with AppleCare+ the cost would be $99 for 0 replacements, $149 for 1, or $199 for two, and so it's not worth it.

I agree that if those figures are correct, it's not worth it, but I don't think I've ever read that Apple had a flat $199 fee for fixing iPhone problems. They certainly don't here in Canada, and AC+ is not being offered in Canada anyway, so no big deal.

For reading PDFs as you browse the web? Safari? It's built in. All Apple products have built in PDF readers. If you want to save them and read them later, iBooks is built in and does it just fine. If you want a better interface, GoodReader.

You can't. You're stuck in 1080p.

Shoulda got that larger capacity, eh?
 
I'm running iTunes 10.1 or .2. do I need to update it to ensure a good backup to restore from 3G to my new 4s or as long as iTunes backs it up, I am good to go?

I have read a while back that the later iTunes (10.3?) have made music that was imported into iTunes not show up in playlists and so I decided not to update.

O_O, that sucks man... Well, at least i did get the 32 GB model. I may seriously exchange it to a 64GB if this is the case. I was under the impression that you would be able to toggle between 720p and 1080p, it seems like it would not be difficult to integrate such option. I could always downsize and convert on my computer after exporting but i am just too lazyyyyyy.

Settings - > General - > Network - > enable 3g?

No 3G option in Network or any settings that I can find. I read somewhere that it's always on, but my internet isn't working without wi-fi. And I know 3G works here because my 3G was working fine using it earlier today.
