I can't get over how much faster my 4S is than my iPad1. Really looking forward to iPad3 now.
FWIW: This is the case my 4S sits in:

It is extremely thin, protects the back from scratches, and as a bonus has a small kickstand that I will probably rarely use. It is plastic and has a slightly rubbery feel, but will not stick to the inside of a pocket.
What case is this and do they make it in clear?
Yeah, where did you get this case? I can't find it on the Body Glove site or anywhere else for that matter...

The next iPod Touch will basically be an iPhone 4S without the phone, right? Any ideas when we should expect it?

Didn't they announce it at the iPhone 4S conference? I think it's using the A5 processor, but I remember hearing some disappointment about the camera, like it's still using the 4's camera, or something.
Actually this is the first year they don't even try to match iPhone's new hardware. Only difference announced from last years iPod touch is a white version and a new price.

So yeah, same non-IPS retina screen, A4, 256MB of RAM, 720p camera and everything else. It's the iPod touch 4.

Not sure if they'll update it or just kill it next year.

has anyone here some real pictures of the iph4 white with the various bumper colors?

iam still not sure about using a case or just a pouch ? no idea

They dropped the price, though, which I think is the point. They won't kill it, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if they keep it a year behind from here on out in order to keep that price point lower.

I'd like if they kept it a year behind, threw in phone hardware, bump it up 100USD each. El iPhone cheapo. No more "last years iPhone" along with new ones.

Took Verizon 3G out in the wild for the first time, really happy with the result.

More important than speedtest numbers, the real-world performance is GREAT. Super snappy web performance and I downloaded an app pretty speedily too.

LOVING the voice/call performance too. Calls seem to connect so much faster than on AT&T and the clarity is great. I'm sure Verizon will find numerous ways to fuck me going forward, but for right now I'm very happy.

The best one is the MacRumors guy who started a thread saying "4S is garbage, Apple is out of ideas, they've lost me as a customer, I'm gonna go get a Samsung Galaxy II" - and then a week later he was in the 4S order status thread saying "OMG my 4S has shipped, it just departed Hong Kong" etc etc. Stone cold busted.

I think my biggest beef is just the lack of buttons.

Terrible emulation aside, Sonic the Hedgehog is very playable on the iPhone, but without physical buttons the game just becomes a chore and unfun to play... not to mention your thumb covering up a lot of the oncoming screen area.
You leave your thumb on the screen then? I sure don't.

I don't love playing games with virtual d-pads much at all, but I really didn't have any issues with Sonic. Was able to easily complete Sonic 1 and 2 on my phone and the emulation seemed fine (perfect 60 fps). Not a great example of gaming on the iPhone, but it was very playable.

The sound/music is the biggest offender, emulation-wise.

It's a common problem with Genesis emulation.

So I'm going to go pick up a 4S, and I'm trying to update my 4 to iOS 5 as per the Apple recommendation for a smooth transition, and...

Uhhh. I have 20 terabytes of hard drive space, but it's only looking at my SSD and I don't seem to have any way to point it anywhere else.

Lame. You probably need to reinstall iTunes onto a drive with more space.

Not being able to choose storage location is a big problem I have with Steam, too.

Gary this is off-topic but I just read your OXM Halo CE review while pooping today.

Okay, so I need a new phone, but I don't want to be stuck in contract with AT&T again. If I purchase an unlocked phone to use with AT&T until my 6 months contract is up, is it possible to switch to another carrier, or is each carrier's iPhone always specific to that carrier?

Ah, well, I played with the audio disabled. I'm aware that it's a problem and that makes sense as all three of my Genesis systems actually sound different as well. If the real hardware varies that much it should be of no surprise that emulation has issues.

Can you point your iTunes library to the other drive? I don't how you get to preferences in iTunes Window, but it's under advanced.

Edit:

Found this, will try:

I had this problem too, but found a fairly easy fix, at least on windows 7.

A little background first though, I have my OS(win7-64bit) installed on a 40GB SSD, and then everything else including my program files and user folders are on a second, 3TB hard drive. I'm using symbolic links to make this all work well, cause windows has a hard time when it doesn't see the program files and users directory on its install drive, even when you change the registery settings for them. So iTunes incorrectly thought it was trying to backup to my SSD drive due to the symbolic links, when in reality it was trying to back up to my 3TB drive.

The fix is to change the registry settings for the "AppData" folder that itunes backs up into. In windows 7 it is quite simple to do. You don't even have to directly touch the registry. The steps are as follows (for Win7):

1. Navigate to your AppLocal folder. To do this simply open a folder, and type in "applocal" in the location bar and hit enter.

2. There will be three folders. Do the following for all three folders(Local, LocalLow, and Roaming):
1. Right-click and select properties
2. Select the "Locations" tab on the uppper left of the window.
3. Change the location to where you have more disk space. For me it was as simple as just changing the "C:\" portion to "D:\".
4. Click apply. At this point windows will ask you if you want it to copy the data already in the App folder to the new location. If the data isn't already in the new folder you selected, then say yes, or many programs won't work correctly. If, like me, you are using symbolic links and just selected the folder that the orginal pointed to anyway, then you can hit no.
5. If windows had to copy anything, wait for the copy to finish.

3. Restart iTunes if it is still open.

4. Try again to upgrade and it should now backup without complaints.

x10000000 others who probably did the same thing

Ugh, can't do that either, have an endless list of access denied folders when I try to copy the appdata folders over, which I have to remove manually one by one it seems.

Edit: a bunch of manual deletions later...

Given that you only need 20GB, is it possible to remove a game install or something from your SSD just long enough to get a backup done or would that be impractical?

I don't have any games installed on it, so something like that would be a last resort. Pressing on with the appdata relocate method.

To those who got the 16GB: Any space issues and/or regrets? I'm considering switching from the 32GB to the 16GB as I won't be using the iPhone often for downloaded podcasts as I initially planned...

So I download a lot of mixtapes. Any way I can download it directly with my phone? Can it download, unzip, and put mp3 files in appropriate places for listening? Just wondering if I can do this without syncing to a PC. My main problem here is that I'm not living at home at the current moment so I don't have my PC hooked up to sync with it, and won't for another few weeks.
The short answer:
z61wh.png

The long answer:
You can pay for AppStore apps e.g. Filer and iUnarchive to get a makeshift solution (you won't be able to add the files to the music app), jailbreak your iPhone or switch to an Android/webOS/blackberry/meego smartphone.

Okay, got it. Moving the windows location for appdata\roaming alone worked, since I couldn't relocate appdata\local.

Why does iTunes need to be running to wifi sync? My Mac is always on but iTunes isn't always running. If the phone wants to sync can't it send a signal to the Mac to start iTunes?

I have a similar problem with Apple TV, it won't let me stream anything from the Mac if iTunes isn't running of if the Mac is asleep. Instead of me traipsing upstairs to fix it, couldn't this just be done via a wifi command from the phone?

I thought Itunes automatically starts when your phone is within range. It works on my Mac.

Quick question, if I were to restore my 4S back to factory settings and then restore it from my backup made from my 3GS (that's running iOS5), would all of my messages and app hi-scores be transferred back onto the 4S?

...And yes, this is because I want to recover my Angry Birds scores.

I'm on sprint as well and getting shitty stats on every other peed test. However the browsing is fast and I can download Apps and stream with no issues. Siri also works great Then again I've never had 4g lol

I don't have my 4S yet but I have a 16GB 3G, my girlfriend has a 16GB 4, and I have a 16GB iPad. The only time we've ever had space pressure has been on the iPad while on extended sans-internet vacations and wanting to load up on content. I use AirVideo to handle video at home and Audiogalaxy to handle audio (I expect to replace this with iTunes Match depending on how well it works).

Yeah, it's really not necessary unless you're using the device as a dedicated mp3 player or shooting a LOT of video. I think I'm still going to go for the 64GB, just because I do tend to keep most of my music collection on my phone, but really, I don't think I've ever had more than 5GB of space dedicated to non-audio on my 3GS.

I was gonna get 64gb but I have a 64gb ipad and only 32gb used. So I went with 32gb. I only had a 2gb micoSD card in my old phone so this is a HUGE improvement

32GB has served me well, but over the past few months I've really found myself maxing it out and having to micromanage to keep my podcasts up-to-date (not satisfied with iTunes' limited automated sorting options for podcasts)

I have to ask...........Is it just the west coast that has shitty AT&T service? I've been with them for years, and its always been pretty excellent. I live in Louisiana. I always hear and read about complaints, but I've never experienced any of that myself.

You don't have much mobile bandwidth? I've got 6GB a month, I could easily use my phone as a primary music player just streaming everything I want and storing nothing :p

How does this work if Cloud storage is limited, though? I'm really lost when it comes to using iCloud or streaming your music to your phone. Also, does this have to be music that you purchased through iTunes? In that case, I have very little of my library available for streaming.

Also, I have unlimited data on ATT, but my service is spotty at work or in buildings at school sometimes. Plus, I just like having the space available. Never know when I'll want to use it for something.

Right now I use Audiogalaxy to do this, so it has nothing to do with iCloud. Audiogalaxy is free, it's just a thin client that runs on your home computer with the music.

In the future, I plan to switch to iTunes Match. If you haven't heard of it, it's $24.99/year, automatically mirrors 100% of the stuff you have--purchased on iTunes, purchased elsewhere, ripped, or, yes, pirated--for access through the cloud. If you have something they have absolutely no knowledge of at all (IE a song not sold on iTunes anywhere in the world), you have to upload it, if not it's automatic. Without iTunes Match, you get this for all your iTunes purchases, but most of my music is from old-ass CDs I bought for a quarter or so.
