32GB has served me well, but over the past few months I've really found myself maxing it out and having to micromanage to keep my podcasts up-to-date (not satisfied with iTunes' limited automated sorting options for podcasts)

I do not like iTunes on Windows and the lack of podcast subscription in iPhone makes me not want to subscribe to anything. I'll just listen when I can

I'm using a mac and have zero problems with iTunes. My big gripe is that, to my knowledge, I can only choose options for ALL of my podcasts, instead of being able to choose specific parameters for what gets pushed to my phone.

For instance, The Tobolowsky Files is something I like to listen to in order, because sometimes he references old stories in each episode. On the other hand, something like the /Filmcast or Filmspotting I want to listen to as they update each week. Currently iTunes only allows me to choose to update the 10 most recent or the 10 least recent, for instance, but not some combination where I get the 10 most recent of Filmspotting but the 10 least recent of The Tobolowsky Files.

BTW was it taken with HDR? It always grains the pictures like that. The 4S seems to be shoddy in lower light just as the 4 was, but amazing in well let environments. More than MP numbers I guess.

Stuff like that is why I don't like iTunes. Never used it on Mac but I bet it's just as unintuitive.

That's irritating. I have to get my 4S swapped out at the Apple Store because one of the speakers doesn't work. At least it's an obvious problem that won't be hard to replicate.

I hope they maintain a bit of surplus stock for things like this. I'll be irritated if I have to wait ages for a replacement after the whole pre-ordering thing.

Phone itself is awesome though. Everything (on the software side) works beautifully. So slick!

The iPhone only has one speaker.

Non-HDR.

I thought that when I first got my 3GS. :(

As per the posts above, there is nothing wrong with your phone :)

To those who got the 16GB: Any space issues and/or regrets? I'm considering switching from the 32GB to the 16GB as I won't be using the iPhone often for downloaded podcasts as I initially planned...

The short answer:

The long answer:
You can pay for AppStore apps e.g. Filer and iUnarchive to get a makeshift solution (you won't be able to add the files to the music app), jailbreak your iPhone or switch to an Android/webOS/blackberry/meego smartphone.
Can't iCab download files?

Edit:

iCab Mobile has a built-in Download Manager so you can download almost all files from the internet. The downloads can be easily transfered to a Mac/PC/Linux computer but also to other Apps on the device which can open these files (iOS 3.2 or newer required).

Really? It's kinda noisy IMO.
Well, I'm not really knowledgeable about photography in general; I just think it looks pretty great for a cellphone photograph.

I think the moral of the iPhone camera story is that with sufficient lighting few things can touch it in the phone/compact camera realm.

Ya, but the iPhone 4S is being touted as something rivaling point and shoot cameras, not just being pretty good for a cell phone. The ones Gary just posted above are definitely much nicer. It seems in daylight the phone takes great photos, but in low light or indoor situations the photos get pretty noisy.

So it does rival a point and shoot, then, seeing as they also suck in indoor/lowlight conditions.

My Canon 40D gets noisy when I crank up the ISO in order get a stable shot in low light.

Exactly, with HDR enabled in not so well lit areas, it starts to get a bit grainy/noisy.

@mandiller, yeah my friend was trying to convince me that one of my speakers was hit. :lol Never even knew until I looked it up tbh, thought the iPhone had two speakers for some reason.

Ya, but you can control the ISO level on your 40D. You can control the ISO on most point and shoot cameras. Apple doesn't let you control the ISO level. I would hope with a f2.4 lens, indoor daytime lighting would be pretty sufficient to not have to crank the ISO way high to make the picture noisy.

A larger aperture will help, but until the sensors get larger you're always going to have noisy images in low light.

I don't know about that, all I know is I'm pretty happy with these photos. The idea of carrying around a point-and-shoot camera is a joke to me at this point. But if someone is that concerned about manual ISO and stuff like that you're probably the kind of person who should be carrying a dedicated camera. Pics like this from a smartphone are pretty amazing IMO.

Edit:
I didn't mean to imply that only the apps I mentioned could download files (I mentioned Filer because it's a download manager first and foremost—it's a basic music player too—and I suggested iUnarchive because it can uncompress practically all archive formats). None of the apps from the AppStore are allowed to transfer files into Apple's Music app though.

p.s. I should note that the screenshot is quite old (take a look at the sidebar). I've been saving that one for a while

I would just have hoped that the coffee shot would have had sufficient lighting to not have that much noise in it. It seems to me that the auto settings wants to compensate ISO setting a lot more quickly than shutter speed, which might be understandable in some situations but I'm not so sure there. I could probably take that shot with a kit lens at f3.5 and 800 ISO and have a lot less noise. Granted that's an SLR, but I don't think the example is completely baseless.

I think the iPhone 4 camera was pretty nice as is aside from the white balance issue. I have no doubt that 4S is better than the 4 so I think it's a good camera. I'm just surprised at all the talk about the new sensor, and the f2.4 lens that we see that much noise when people are arguing it stacking up against point and shoot cameras. I think you'll still find many point and shoot cameras that aren't that noisy under the lighting condition even under automatic shoot settings. So yes, from a smartphone they are amazing, but I thought we were moving into the realm of claiming this was a camera that moved beyond cell phone category and was moving towards how it stacks up to point and shoots. If not, then ya, camera is amazing for a cell phone.

…

An APS-C sensor is many times larger than the 1/3.2" sensor in the iPhone. It's not a fair comparison at all.

How much of a space hog are you guys finding the higher quality pictures and video to be? I've never come close to needing 32GB before (I don't store any video, and I limit my music to a small playlist) so I'm wondering if people feel it's necessary with the 4s. I don't suppose I take a ton of photos or video, but I can certainly see myself doing so with such a nice camera.

Honestly, the iPhone 4 camera is good enough for me, so its just going to get better every time i upgrade my phone. I'll never need to buy a point and shoot ever again.

The best camera is the one you have with you.

Also consider these iPhone shots when compared to the low quality, outdated point-and-shoot cameras non-photography buffs relied on previously. Sneaking a higher quality camera into a convergence device is a win.

Stack the best of the all-in-one device against the best of the dedicated hardware, and you'll know the outcome every time. Think higher.

Text messaging with siri is amazing. I wish i could post on gaf the same way.

can’t you use the dictation from the system keyboard when creating a post?

true, you still need to tap “post” but it’s almost there

....Yeah.

I figured the speaker thing out in my own mind about 15 minutes after I posted. And I thought "GAF will tar and feather me for my ignorance in the 4S thread."

Head hung in shame.

But I've never been so glad to be wrong!

I am dictating this message via Siri I hope this works. Holy shit it worked this is going to change my life I hate typing on the small devices. This is bloody and incredible I can't believe it's this accurate.

Yup you can use Siri for dictation any time there's a keyboard.

I'm gonna take some low-light photos this evening to see how they come out.
