Maybe stop being so obsessed with speedtest results and focus on real-world performance.
Do web pages pop up as fast as you'd like them to? Does media stream without hiccups? Do apps download speedily?
I was pretty amazed as I clicked on the iTunes stream of the Bombcast today. Instant. It doesn't get better than instant :P

Ok... one last time. Case suggestions?
Bit late, but my brother bought me this as a surprise. No good to show off the aluminium back on my phone, but could be handy for when the phone may take a beating or I'm having a night out on the piss:

So those of you with this amazing battery life; did you start fresh, or restore from a previous iPhone backup? I'm considering starting fresh to see if its any difference.

Can you open beer bottles with that thing? :P

I just tried that and it started up after about two seconds. I'm pretty pleased with this given the low speediest numbers I've seen. Again, real-world usage > speedtest numbers.

Also, I had no idea that you could stream podcasts right from iTunes on the phone. Neat!

I restored from an iPod Touch backup.

That is fucking awesome.

Now that I think about it, I think there is a motivation for the next iPhone to NOT be called iPhone 5.

That reason is iOS6.

Yeah it's an ancient iOS feature actually. Nice to have. But it's a little janky. I wish it would just add an entry to the podcast section of the music app, so it would retain your position and all that. Why even differentiate between a fully downloaded podcast and a stream? I hope iOS podcast support improves in the future in so many ways.

It used to be really annoying before iOS4 multitasking, because you couldn't surf the web and listen to the stream at the same time. Closing the silly "Quicktime player" interface would kill the stream.

Well, it IS an Australian design ;) That bottle opener slides in and out, and (I guess... no 4S yet) the thumb grip also shows off the logo.
Smart!

At this point I hope there's ever another iPhone released, so that we don't have to speculate over what it will be called.

It's totally irrelevant. It could be the iPhone Dick Biscuit or the iPhone -.86x, and it wouldn't matter. The device will be upgraded, people will buy it. The name is completely meaningless.

Edit: Didn't mean for that to sound angry. Haha. Just... come on, guys.

It appears that AV Player was updated today to support the dual core a5 in the iPhone 4S. Now the 720p .mkvs with subtitles play flawlessly.

Fuck yeah!

Clicking the image will take you to their site (Inception!!!!) which has more of the background on it. I can only assume that the side button differences b/w the 4 and 4S won't make enough of a difference for it to fit.

It's solid, too. Feels like it could take a really hard knock.

It eats battieries its better to download it in one go if you can.

Also i want to pose a question, do you think that Apple will iterate on the iphone 4 design like how Porche iterates its cars?

I don't think they will go another generation without changing the external design of the phone. Seems like they are on a tick-tock cycle now - big update followed by a spec bump, then another big update followed by a spec bump etc.

The problem is how will they top 4's design? They can't do glass back again, but what else can compare in terms of 'sexyness'. carbon back? Wood back?

Bigger question is if ios 6 will look any different.

Maybe they'll steal yet another feature from Android and include a facial recognition screen lock that you have to stare at for ten seconds before it fails to recognize you.

indeed. it's a shame Apple didn't get credit for creating Android's pull-down notification system years before in a skunkworks project that never saw the light of day.

can't believe no one's reported on that.

Why do they have to get rid of the glass back? All they can do is just make the screen much larger and make the revolutionary piece something like eWallet.

It seems that the more I use the phone, the more that the battery life improves.

I'm at 6 hours of usage and 16.5 hours of standby time and still have 26% of battery life left.

Maybe we'll get a 1920x1280 resolution screen :-p

THE RETINAS, HAVE MERCY

But seriously, I couldn't care less about hardware at this point - barring a revolution in battery and cooling tech, adding more cores and more RAM will only yield diminishing returns.

I want a total overhaul of the iOS UI. It's a thing of beauty, for sure, but its visual language doesn't have the wow factor it did in 2007. The fact is, I don't know what I would want it to look like - I keep bringing up WP7, but that's not quite hitting the spot for me either.

I'm always a bit envious when I play around with a WP7 phone as it's so bright and colorful and attractive but I don't know if I'd want to live with it day-to-day. Even looking at ICS I think Android just looks ugly and amateurish. iOS fo lyfe!

Any good video demos of what makes WP7 worthwhile? I know nothing about it. All I know is that when I see Android phones, the UI always looks... I don't know, it just looks unappealing to me, and possibly a bit too easy to muck up. I really like the simplicity of iOS. Once you have your apps and folders situated the way you want it, there's really zero tinkering that needs to be done with the phone. Not to be a party line guy, but it just works.

Something is definitely wrong with the battery indicator. I'm at 6.5 hours of usage trying to drain the battery but I've been at 1% for 40 minutes and counting now. My old 4 got 8 hours of usage on a single charge

I think the percentage indicator is messed up. This phone refuses to die. I've tried movies, music, and heavy texting the past half hour

I'm not sure I understand. What about ios's ui needs to be updated? There are very few elements that are exposed to the user.
Notifications - brand new, sure there are some changes and refinements that can be done, but a user only looks at them for a few seconds.
Modal dialogs - people should be seeing fewer of those now with ios 5, but they look okay. Guess Apple could update their style a little bit, or add an animation.
Quick App Switcher - 4 app icons and a background, not much to do there.
Launch pad/springboard - another thing that users use for about a 5 seconds at a time. Hope they don't change it, it's simple but it works. Everyone, including my technology illiterate mother knows how to get to the app they want. Not sure what can be changed without messing that up.
Spotlight - guess it could use some work, but most of the problems with it come from it not pulling enough metadata, and not with the ui.
Apps - an app can look however the developer wants. Even the widgets in the app can easily be themed, subclassed, or made to work/look however the developer wants. Apple provides 3 different styles of apps - standard, black, and skeuomorphic.
Top bar - I guess they could change the color, it's all black/transparent with the iPad, would not be opposed if they did the same with the iPhone/Touch, but grey doesn't offend me much either.
Lock screen - can be improved, I feel it's really inconsistent, especially with ios 5.

I hear this 'iOS needs to update its style' somewhat frequently, but since it is pretty much a completely app driven interface, I'm not sure what people are talking about when they say style. App makers can make apps for the iPhone that look exactly like android apps, or exactly like wp7 apps if they wanted to.

I've been loving my 4S ever since I got it. I upgraded from a combo of a 4 year old slider phone and iPod Touch 4 and it's nice to have just one device that does everything I want well. Even going from the Touch's Retina screen to the 4S's IPS screen, there's a noticeable upgrade in clarity and color vibrancy.

Same thing happened to me. I sat on 1% a few days back for at least 15 or 20 minutes.

I'm draining my phone's battery to calibrate it. My usage today was:

Usage: 6 hours and 15 minutes
Standby: 1 Day, 9 hours

-3G and Wifi are both on
-BT is off
-Push is off (it's basically set to fetch manually)
-Raise to Siri is on
-I always have strong to average signal
-Auto brightness is off, the bar set to about 67%

I'll say not bad. Not iPhone 4 good but not bad at all.

Hey guys, when I set an alarm on the 4S, can I change the sound I get when it goes off? I've customized everything in the Sounds menu, and I've changed the alert that goes off when the timer ends in the Clock app; but I can't figure out how to change the alarm from Marimba or whatever it is. No sign of any option in the app itself or in Settings, and Google has been no help thusfar. I could just download Nightstand Central or something, but setting alarms with Siri is so much more efficient.

Edit the alarm in the clock app. It lets you pick the sound.

How did I not see this. Thank you!

Edit: Nice - it remembers my chosen alert after I delete the old alarm and set a new one, so I don't have to reselect it every time.

So you know Apple provides default styles for creating apps, you know iOS is organized around an app driven interface but you can't understand what people mean when they talk about changing the iOS design language... are you being intentionally obtuse? (Did you seriously just suggest that developers breaking the HIG would serve as an updated style for iOS?!) But before this thread degenerates into another User Interface mudslinging match, I need to know what you meant by "There are very few elements that are exposed to the user." wtf? Lol?

my contract provider has acknowledged my 30 day contract cancellation, and my contract will now be cancelled on the 13th Nov. the question is now do i be sensible and wait until my contract has finished before i get a 4S or just get one now?

You couldn't even if you tried *smirk* I couldn't even load up Apple's iPhone reserve page at 9 pm the past two nights as the website kept crashing on me. When I finally got to the stock reserves page, at 9:10, of course all the units were all gone. The website says a few weeks waiting time for deliveries so you might as well order here now. You should also talk to your new provider about how long it'll take them to port the number over before deciding when to get the 4S.

They don't need to overhaul the UI, not for years. Just tweak and evolve. Like OS X, which looks familiar after a decade, yet has a lot of UI changes.

The overall UI metaphor and style is still comfortable to people, it shouldn't be thrown out.

The biggest feature from the ICS reveal that would be useful for iOS to copy would be facial recognition unlocking of the phone.

The NFC stuff they demonstrated was neat but I'm not really all that sure what amongst it couldn't have been done by Bump!'s technology, so...

Yup. Thank god a lot of you guys aren't in charge of Apple.

did they mention in that talk how they'd prevent using a photo or someone's sleeping face to prevent unsolicited usage? does it do slight 3D modeling to make sure the face isn't a static image? does it make sure eyes are visible?

that tech seems great for something like desktop computers, not phones.

i'm dying for Apple to return the candy colored UI elements and pinstripes.

? Apple has already started overhauling the UI—what else is Siri but a different interface for your phone? Siri is already a halfway replacement for Spotlight. Give Siri the ability to open apps and it's infringing on Multitasking bar's/Springboard's turfs, especially when combined with the new notification center. (Reintroduce typing input for Siri and it could replacd Springboard, and many apps, altogether).

Apps could still be rejigged to replace the tab bar and UI popovers etc (and the skeurmorphic design and color schemes ivedoneyourmom was yapping about) but that's another level beneath the UI overhaul Apple is apparently promising with Siri...

Android Beam is to Bump as Siri is to Google Voice Actions... But yeah, most of the stuff in ICS are refinements of Android features that Apple has already stolen... unless
Apple to switches from Helvetica Neue to Roboto *trollface.jpg*

Sounds like tweaking and evolving to me.

An overhaul to me is Widnows 7 -> Windows 8 metro style.

Making Siri do things more efficiently is not.

As for iOS 6? Apps as widgets in the notification center. Bank on it.

Having a issue getting the phone to notify me when I get mail to my gmail account. If I click the mail app it will download the new mail then notify me but it will not tell me unless I am looking at the mail app.

Anyone know a fix for this?

Go into Settings -> Notifications -> and then click Mail. It probably doesn't have Badges or Banners set.

...while still letting me access my gmail?
