Instacast is the best Podcast app ever.

I disagree if you use it in a car. If that's the best then they're all kinda mediocre. Here's some issues I had with it:

- I hate how I have to click one too many times to play the podcast
- It sucks that I can't play the next podcast without going into the app
- My Bluetooth controls won't let me control moving forward or back
- The Bluetooth display doesn't show the time
- Podcasts are stored in the app's sandbox and not available in the normal music player
- Got into a weird state where switching from WiFi to 3G confused it and I couldn't finish caching the podcast or stream it. Killing the app didn't fix it either. Really annoying when driving home today.
- Is there no way to set it to check every time the app is open for new podcasts?

Need advice: My girlfriend's iPhone 4S is messed up. A black box appears around her apps when she taps them. Then if she double taps any other app the boxed app opens. She can't scroll side to side to get to different apps, and when we tried to open the "Setting" menu, she couldn't scroll down. Anybody know what's wrong, and if so, how to fix it?

she’s enabled voiceover for selections. if the volume is turned up, she should hear the iPhone reading aloud the menu selections

you need to double tap quickly on an icon to open an app. you scroll with three fingers.

go into settings, scroll down with three fingers to get to general > accessibility > voiceover and turn it off (double tap on the menu items and the on/off switch)

you’ll see that black box around every selected menu item the first time you tap it.

(this may have been accidentally enabled by setting it to turn on via triple clicking the home home button. you can try toggling it off by doing that move)

Anyone have the Ford Sync system in their car? How well does it work with the iPhone 4? What can you do/can't you do with it?

Got it. Did the triple click to turn it off. Thank you.

Nothing's wrong, that's simply the VoiceOver accessibility option enabled.

To open up an element, tap it once to highlight (the black box) and then double tap anywhere else.

Scroll up and down with three fingers.

That being said: Settings > General > Accessibility > VoiceOver - turn it off.

edit: shit i'm so late.

I need an amazing case I can pick up at an apple store, going in the morning to finally get my 4 repaired/replaced for resale. The Feather maybe? I'm using a crappy hand-me-down iFrogz case now because the cutout is large enough to work with the 4S' new switch placement.

Edit: I've been using TuneIn Radio Pro, is Instacast much better? I like having NPR and some podcasts in the same app but I'm willing to upgrade if it means better podcast support.

I ended up buying the Feather and the PixelSkin HD. Mostly because I wanted a "barely there" case and one that offered some protection. Now that I have both and used both, the Feather just seems like a waste. It literally offers no protection. If I'm going to have a case like that, I'd rather just go caseless. The PixelSkin HD doesn't add a whole lot and I feel very safe with it on.

Go with the Speck PixelSkin HD.

I do. What do you want to know?

What functions are available? I know obviously calls and handsfree dialing, and audio streaming. Do texts show up on the display (not the navigation display)? Are all apps streaming audio by default? Will it work with your playlist/ipod like Voice Control does?

Called around everywhere trying to find one today to no avail so I just said screw it and ordered one online from Apple. "1-2 weeks" apparently, but I can deal with that. Upgrading from my old ass 3G. #cantwait.

Where if you don't mind me asking? Ebay? I have a 3G that I no longer use.

I just put it up on Craigslist this morning, and had 3 offers by midday or so. Took a few photos also.

I requested local pickup only, so I went and met the guy after work. My fiance also sold her iPhone 4 for $300. I have my iPhone 4 up for the same price, but haven't heard from any interested parties yet.

You paid $200 for it brand new on contract. But yeah, Apple gadgets are the best for resale.

How is the supply these days? I've almost finalized getting everyone on my family to switch to Verizon...but I don't want to have cut off our contracts and have to wait weeks for the iPhones...

I just picked up an iPhone 4s today. This is my first iPhone, I'm coming over from a Palm device with WebOS. I feel like a caveman who has discovered fire for the first time. How did I live without this for so long?

So Gaf, point me in the direction of some good apps. The internet is flooded with reviews of all types, but I trust you guys.

Right now every store is telling me that they're on a 3-4 week back order. I placed an order through the ATT, and my estimated ship date is the 21st-28th of November

Anyone else having issues with Sprint/Apple giving you your purchased AppleCare+? Checking my warranty at apple.come shows me with just the standard warranty, even though I purchased AppleCare+ from Sprint when I ordered my 4S. My invoice from Sprint lists AppleCare+ as "backordered" somehow and when I contacted them about it they said everything was fine and registration occurred automatically.

So I contacted Apple explaining the situation and provided my proof that I purchased it (my invoice from Sprint). They replied telling me they need my AppleCare Protection Plan enrollment number (registration number), even though I told them I never received one. They replied back, again saying they need the registration number.

I told them I don't have it and never received one and they have yet to reply back to me. I guess I'll wait another day and then contact Sprint about it again, hoping they can somehow send me whatever registration number they have attached to my account saying I purchased it.

They sent me a welcome kit today and apple.com says I'm good. Any update on your end?

Not too much so far. I contacted Sprint to try and get my registration number and they replied back just now saying that due to some error Applecare+ was removed from my account and they added it back just now.

I still see the regular warranty listed on the Apple site, but I'll give it a day or so to update I guess.

I still haven't heard back from Apple since the last time I contacted them two days ago. If what Sprint did didn't fix anything I guess I'll just drive down to the Apple store and complain in person.

I've had Ford Sync hooked up to an iPhone 3GS and a 4S. They play together well. It's weird because the phone and the car both have voice recognition, so you have an abundance of options. Do I use the car to voice dial people or Siri (if you get a 4, you can still use regular voice recognition to dial). Other than hands free calling, the best part is having Bluetooth audio stream to your car's speakers, so all your music or podcasts play in the car without any cables. GPS apps work as well, and a new Ford likely has Sirius satellite radio too. It's a pleasure driving long distances with that many options at your fingertips.

If you get a 4 instead of a 4S, you're going to lose Siri, which lets you receive and answer text messages without looking at the phone. Other than that, it's a great phone to pair to a car.

Got my first 4s photos I want to share. Just got two 8 week old kittens.

Is it any fewer clicks than playing a single episode of a specific podcast in the Music app? I think it's the same if you use the "all episodes" category at the top or already have newest episodes cached. If you were in the middle of playing a podcast and are returning to the app it brings you right to that episode so you can pick up where you left off... *shrug*

- It sucks that I can't play the next podcast without going into the app

I could see this being an issue. For me, when I'm in the car, I just keep the app loaded and I usually want to pick which podcast I listen to next anyway instead of just playing the next one on the list even if it goes to it automatically. Generally speaking most podcasts I listen to are longer than my commute anyway.

- My Bluetooth controls won't let me control moving forward or back

I've never had to do this with a podcast so it doesn't affect me. Is it missing controls that other music apps that play in the background allow? Perhaps it's more a limitation on which controls are allowed through the main system music player than a problem with the app itself.

- The Bluetooth display doesn't show the time

Mine doesn't either (connected through USB), but this has never been an issue for me personally as the audio player in my car doesn't show running time on anything played through AUX.

- Podcasts are stored in the app's sandbox and not available in the normal music player

After using Instacast I've never wanted/needed to go back to listening to podcasts in the normal music player, so it's not an issue for me personally. Though this may be a restriction within iOS than the developers not including this as a feature.

- Got into a weird state where switching from WiFi to 3G confused it and I couldn't finish caching the podcast or stream it. Killing the app didn't fix it either. Really annoying when driving home today.

That's an odd one. I've never experienced that as I always cache new episodes in the morning and at night - I've only ever used streaming once to listen to an older episode of a show. Have you gone into Settings to check what you have selected for cellular data? By default, "caching" is turned off over 3G (I think), so that may have been part of the problem.

- Is there no way to set it to check every time the app is open for new podcasts?

Yes. Change your "refresh on start" setting to every hour instead of once a day (the default). Settings for Instacast are not in the app itself—they're in Settings/Instacast. Alternately, when you start the app if you pull down it'll refresh the list.

I use Instacast for listening while driving (Instacast and Audible are my two go-tos) and think it's fantastic. I can't imagine going back to iTunes/the music player now.

So when it's connected (Bluetooth?) the sync voice commands will do things like play playlists or artists, as the iPhone voice control would? Or is it a choice between which voice control you use?

Sync is setup to read your text for you depending on your carrier. There's only a couple of apps that work with Sync's Applink. Playlists work just fine.

If you're playing a hot jam and bring up Siri does it stop the music?
If I have headphones without a mic and bring up siri can I just speak into the phone itself?

My parents have 2 4Ss on the way, and I had 3 questions:
1)is the enable/disable mobile data toggle switch still present in settings?

2)is there a good app for them to track how much of their 250MB plan is being used?

3)does the stock Mail app use encryption when receiving and sending messages on public wifi?

1) Yes

2) I'm on AT&T, and the free myAT&T app tells you your usage. Mileage may vary on other carriers.

3) It has to be set up on a per-account basis. All Gmail accounts, for instance, default to SSL encryption enabled. It will come down to the email provider.

Siri is a hands free interface and apple cannot assume you are looking at the screen while using it. you need to be able to hear it. it has to stop the music.
It should still be able to set a timer without stopping the music. Obviously for the more tricky actions where it needs to ask you things it would pause the music. But quick searches and actions there is no need to stop the music. Or hell, have it continue music through the headphones and have the siri voice come out of the phone. I'm sure I sound ridiculous.
never stop the music

I just had a crazy epiphany about the linen motif. Its like, if the desktop/homescreen is a table and all your apps are the utensils/tools then behind all of that obviously is the linen tablecloth. D:

double e: I also discovered I have 467 tracks that I can redownload from the iCloud.

It's also tracked on the phone itself under Cellular Usage -> Cellular Data.

Yes it is one fewer click.

Music App:

1) Click on Podcast
2) Click on episode to play

Instacast:

1) Click on Podcast
2) Click on episode to play
3) Click the tiny play box which is harder to do while driving.

It's one extra click and it's a bit annoying. I just wanna play the episode and not go to the episode description before I play the podcast.

I could see this being an issue. For me, when I'm in the car, I just keep the app loaded and I usually want to pick which podcast I listen to next anyway instead of just playing the next one on the list even if it goes to it automatically. Generally speaking most podcasts I listen to are longer than my commute anyway.

Well an example is one of the podcasts I listen to is a daily podcast. Sometimes I can get a day or two behind. It would be nice if I could move on to the next episode so I can get caught up. My commute is usually fairly short but the podcast can range from 35 min to 55 min. My commute can range from 25 min to 60 min depending on traffic. So there is definitely a time when it doesn't match up exactly with my commute.

I've never had to do this with a podcast so it doesn't affect me. Is it missing controls that other music apps that play in the background allow? Perhaps it's more a limitation on which controls are allowed through the main system music player than a problem with the app itself.

Yep. The main Music App and Pandora for example let me do this. Instacast does not. It's definitely an issue with Instacast. One thing I like to do is towards the end of the podcast, they start doing closing stuff like thanking people, ending music, and all that other jazz that I would just rather not sit through and move on to the next one. It saves time and allows me to listen to more.

Mine doesn't either (connected through USB), but this has never been an issue for me personally as the audio player in my car doesn't show running time on anything played through AUX.

With iOS5, Bluetooth now sends more data. Instacast needs to be updated or something to fix this. Other things show the current play time. It's nice seeing the playtime on the screen so I can get a feel for how much of the episode is left relative to my commute time. It'll tell me if maybe I can just skip the rest or if I have a lot to go.

After using Instacast I've never wanted/needed to go back to listening to podcasts in the normal music player, so it's not an issue for me personally. Though this may be a restriction within iOS than the developers not including this as a feature.

For me, the only benefit to Instacast is the subscription and the automatic download and deletion upon opening the app. The main music app does a lot of stuff that I mentioned that Instacast does not. It does not have the subscription and auto deletion which is why I'm open to looking elsewhere. Neither is a great solution and both have issues. I would not mind opening up Instacast to just grab what I need and then have all the benefits of the Music App.

I had caching turned on over 3G. Not sure what happened here. I'm sure it was a fluke as it only happened once. It happened while I was trying to leave the office and it had switched from WiFi to 3G.

Yes. Change your "refresh on start" setting to every hour instead of once a day (the default). Settings for Instacast are not in the app itself—they're in Settings/Instacast. Alternately, when you start the app if you pull down it'll refresh the list.

I had that set but every hour is not the same as everytime you start up. Say I open Instacast up as I'm getting ready to leave for my drive home and the Podcast hasn't been updated yet. If I try in 10 min, it won't know to try again because it hasn't been another hour. Unfortunately the podcast I try to listen to on the way home gets updated somewhere within a two hour window of when I go home. So it's not always up until the last minute before I leave.

I use Instacast for listening while driving (Instacast and Audible are my two go-tos) and think it's fantastic. I can't imagine going back to iTunes/the music player now.

I see some of the benefits, but I think the drawbacks keep it from being amazing to me. Neither solution is great. I hope there's something better because both fall short and there definitely seems like there could be room for something better.

So, Verbs turned out to be the perfect IM solution. I only have the 99c version, which lacks push notifications. So I'm not quite sure how all the APIs work for "multitasking" but how is this working? Its still running in the background for maybe 20 minutes after you quit out. Is this like task completion or something? Either way it performed more or less completely flawlessly today while I was testing it out. I wasn't missing any messages and it kept up with the flood. Anyway, this app is great. Very clean, the designers definitely get it. Unlike most iOS apps that just seem to made with stock assets.

The non-pro version of Verbs doesn't have push notifications, so it maintains a live connection for 20 minutes using task completion, yes.

Its so much more goddamn responsive because of that, it feels like.

Jtwo said:

Because of task completion? It shouldn't make a difference because "non-running" apps are just suspended in memory and relaunch instantly. Verbs is just really damn smooth.

Hmm, all the apps I tried yesterday that relied on push to send out notification banners were 5+ seconds late to pop the banner up. So thats NOT because they were using the push servers and just because they were crappy apps?

If I'm understanding correctly, Verbs is keeping the actual device connected when you hop out-- if only for 20 minutes. The apps I used yesterday definitely weren't doing that.

Oh you're talking about responsiveness about notifications. Yeah, push won't always be instant like that. Depends a lot on the developer's servers.

Some apps I get delayed notifications but Google ActiveSync notifications for my email are nearly instant.
