How much are you guys paying for your contracts?

My wife and I are currently on Tmobile, and pay $110 a month for 700 minutes, unlimited nights and weekends, and unlimited data. We have Androids but would like to switch to Iphones when our contract is up at the end of the year.

But the only plans I can find at ATT, Verizon or Sprint for the both of us would cost us something like $160 +taxes or more.

Am I missing something here? What are some of the common plans people get with the Iphone, what service, and how much is it? I'd like an Iphone but I am not paying an extra $70 a month for one.

I'm on a plan with two others which also has military discount, so my cost of the bill is, I believe, $55.00 a month or very near it. That is with unlimited texting, too. I am on AT&T.

I'm still on my parents family plan. Previously had 3 dumbphones (with something like 700 minutes, no texting, no data) on ATT for ~$105. With the Iphone, only added the $25 data plan, so my share is only $60.

Not bad. Since almost all my calling is mobile to mobile, we hardly use any of the minutes up. I don't text either, and if I do, I just use google voice.

GAF, I bought a lapel microphone to use with my 4s, but apparently it needs some sort of adapter. Can anyone recommend something that lets a microphone work through the headphone jack? Audio isn't really my specialty :\

Who here still uses Siri? People I know who have a 4S don't use it at all except when they're driving. And even then it's just to make a call.

From the beginning I've used it only to make new alarms. It's too limited (and in my network area, too unreliable) to just bust it out out on a dime and use it confidently.

I use it to setup appointments sometimes, reply to texts when playing a game that I can't pause. I always use it when I'm walking cause it's cold and I don't like pulling my phone out of my pocket.

I use it, mostly at home or in the car, but it's not at all a vital feature. Far from it for me. Kinda neat, though.

One question, is anyone using a screen protector for the phone? I noticed a Moshi screen protector at AT&T for $25.00 and almost bit the bullet. Is it worth it? I also plan to get the Moshi iGlaze XT. I am not sure if any local store carries it, so I might place an order tomorrow. I'm paranoid about taking my phone anywhere at the moment which I know is silly.

This is purely anecdotal, but as long as you're careful I don't think you need a screen protector. One of the common praises that I hear from people with an iPhone is that the screen is pretty resilient as far as marks and scratches. I've never had a problem in that sense with any of my iPhones either.

But if you're simply not comfortable with using the bare screen then it's pretty easy to slap one on there. Just don't get any annoying air bubbles underneath that shit.

The only times I significantly used Siri was to show it off to other people. The one time I tried to use it to send an SMS to someone while driving (at traffic lights) was an exercise in frustration as I had to delete and manually type every fourth word or so.

SMS either works perfect for me or doesn't work at all.

I say, "send john a text" and then she opens a text to john, all good so far. Then I say the text and she either gets it 100% right, or says she can't do that and boots me out. Weird.

Ok. So photos you're supposed to shoot in portrait and videos you're supposed to shoot in landscape, right?

well, not like it REALLY matters but I find portrait videos don’t look right on TVs or fullscreen on a computer. I’d stick to landscape with video unless you want to do some funky framing on purpose.

photos have been both portrait and landscape for ages.

Apologies for not explaining the Fiio E1 thoroughly enough, but if you were wondering; it's basically an in-line Fiio low(ish)-powered headphone amp that leeches power from the accessory port on an iDevice. It's extra handy in that the headphone out on it us also a remote with volume control (only of the amp though, it doesn't send any volume up/down control signal), pause/play and prev/next track/scan (that obviously DOES go to the device). I can tell you guaranteed that they're good enough for dual-driver IEMs (my UE700s) but will verify with my HD-25s tomoz.

Thx mate, that E1 looks okay, I might see if I can get something a bit more powerful though, but preferably smaller than my mint which isn't really practical to take with my anymore. At this stage I'm eyeing off the
Emmeline P-51 Mustang, maybe an iBasso to save some cash.

This is my Meta 42 with AD8620 op-amps headphone amp in a Penguin mints tin, made by JMT over at head-fi. Homegrown Audio Co Super Silver Braid cable with switchcraft interconnect, Sik line-out.

Unfortunately the Sik Imp line-out no longer works with the current iPhone docks so I'll need a new LOD adapter to go with it.

I think both look better in landscape...unless you actually need the height for a photo to capture what you're after.

Think of it this way: how often do you turn a point-and-shoot camera sideways (portrait)?

Yeah I just got a 4S and it seems like a novelty. Would be cool if I could use it to change settings (like turning bluetooth on, wifi on/off, connect to a network, etc.), open an app, and be used by 3rd parties apps more.

I do occasionally use it to send a text message to someone while I am driving or have it read to me. That is pretty cool.

The second revision will hopefully make it more useful.

I use Siri every time I want to check the temp, set an alarm or timer, and very rarely to set reminders. Its great. Drunkenly slurring "wake me up at 6:30" is a lot easier than trying to spin those ridiculous dial things.

So I am having some strange issues with my 4s.

I just went to use it and the thing wouldn't turn on. When I looked closer, I could see a very dim spin wheel (like the one seen when you turn the device off). I couldn't turn it off or on, and it did nothing when I plugged it into the charger. I finally was able to turn it off by holding down the home button and the power button. When I turned it back on, the battery was at 40% even though the last time I used it it was around 90%. The thing was very warm to the touch as well. Anyone else have this happen to them?

Also, sometimes I randomly get the txt sound, but when I check, I have no new texts, or emails or anything. :/

I use it quite a bit mostly for timers, alarm, weather, and reminders. I also use to wikipedia/google something really fast which has come in handy. I never really tried using it for texts yet. Really should get on that. lol

As people have said, using Siri for alarms, timers, reminders, the time, playing a podcast, showing you contact information etc is invaluable.. As in, I never want to go back to life without it.

Using it for texts is pretty niche. In public it's too awkward, and even in private, I dont always trust it to write properly . Still, I've had a few times with my hands full when I wanted the gist of an incoming text. Sometimes I use it to reply.

The location stuff doesn't work in Canada, yet, though I imagine I'd find it quite useful. I can say things like "Show me a route from here to school via transit", right? If so, great.

Anybody have any experience with Instacast? I'm confused about how downloading works. Does it automatically delete the last podcast in a subscription when it dls the newest one? I don't want a bunch of space getting taken up by old podcasts.

I think once you play a podcast and download a new one it gets deleted.

i wish there was a comprehensive list of all the commands Siri understands. i noticed that she's kind of picky about how you ask for certain things.

I just found out that if you use it to write a txt or something, and say, 'smiley face' it actually puts a smiley face in there, instead of writing it out. :)

Got a question about synching with iTunes. When I plug my phone in I like for it to take anything I got and add it to my library. But what I don't want is iTunes automatically putting games on my phone that I don't want. Is there any way to make it to where it takes stuff from the phone but doesn't put things on there I don't want?

I use Siri about as much as I used Siri when I got my phone. When driving, to make a call. When driving, to make a text. When driving, to set a reminder. I don't look stuff up because she's useless and slower than just Googling it, and I don't use geofencing because it chews up battery and requires (at least in Canada) that the address is in your contacts. I don't use maps/restaurants/whatever because it's not enabled in Canada and because I haven't traveled since getting my 4S.

How many people think they would use Siri more often if you could type the commands in addition to speaking them?

(Which would you rather have first: typed commands or quicker voice parsing like Google is offering in Android 4.0?)

The voice recognition is great, as soon as you start typing it really makes as much sense to just Google instead.

I can see me using it more when the business side of it is enabled for my country.

Possibly.

The only thing i use it for atm is reminders. Anything that involves a search i'd rather just type as in my (somewhat limited) use of it it struggles to pick up what i'm asking for perfectly.

Additionally. Things like "do i need an umbrella today" - which they are showing a lot in the UK ads. By the time i have held down the home button, asked it, and its decided. I've already opened weather pro looked and am back doing something else.

Once i can ask it about cinema times etc. I might use it more. But right now its just a novelty.
