MLB At Bat is hawt. I wonder how much they're going to charge for a full season next year. At $5 for the rest of this year, this feels like a steal.

So I got a response from the maker of the Mobile Flickr app-

Hi Jared,

Thanks for your email, I'm really pleased that you're enjoying it :) Yeah, I blundered that orientation I'm sorry! I do have a fix on me right now, there's just a bit of a delay getting application updates onto the App Store. The next update will add location-based search, once that clears then I'll be able to put up these bug fixes. I'm hoping it's going to be really soon!

cheers,
Karl

Just get a Nuvi or something then.

Or expect more out of the feature on the phone. There's not a whole lot defending GPS as some amazing feature when it can't do the only thing 99% of humanity would care to see in a GPS: turn-by-turn directions.

The new iPhone has only TWO new pieces of hardware, one of them being GPS. It's getting a lot of play, and I'm sure a lot of newbs are going to be turned off by it.

How do you access the itunes store from your iphone? I read it's possible, but I haven't seen anywhere explaining how to do it? I'm on 1.1.4 btw

EDIT: I'm guessing it's from the iTunes app? Probably need 2.0 to see the new content tho...

Finally got back from travel and upgraded my first-gen iPhone to FW 2.0. Fortunately, I had heard about all the issues and waited until 5 AM PDT to start the process -- I figured no one else would be up at that hour on a Saturday to stress the system. (Also, I hate jet lag. Just saying.) A couple of thoughts/questions:

1) I keep being prompted to enter my iTunes Store password every time I buy an app via the App Store application on the iPhone itself. What can I do to make that prompt go away? I've never had the same problem with the iTunes application on the iPhone when I've bought music.

2) As Phoenix noted, there are slim pickings for good apps at launch. AIM is serviceable, and I have it right next to the Google Talk web app, but ultimately something like a mobile Pidgin/Trillian with push notification will be the final solution. (However -- as pure speculation -- it would seem far more likely that Apple themselves might release an iChat app when the push servers come online as a combination "we just added features" marketing bump / "here's how to use the service right" proof-of-concept thing.) I downloaded Pandora per recommendations, but haven't tried it yet. The AOL Radio thing was disappointing because of channel selection -- what I'd really like is the same stations listed in the Radio section of iTunes. I'm also planning to stick with the web app version of Google search and Google Reader since the native apps are fairly sad at this point.

3) Gaming...will probably be good at some point, but I'm also underwhelmed at this point. I haven't downloaded Super Monkey Ball yet because the control sensitivity people are describing makes it sound unplayable except when you're sitting in a perfectly still environment...not a plane or a car, which is when you'd be likely to play games to kill time. I downloaded Aurora Feint but haven't tried it yet. Puzzle Quest and Peggle are needs...hopefully they come out soon. I'm intrigued by the Crash Bandicoot racer, but then again -- why wouldn't I just go track down a PS1 disc and put it on my PSP? As much as the system wars folks will laugh, I'm not jonesing for a lot of iPhone racers or arcade games since the PSP is an awesome portable system. I will be interested in buying iPhone games which take advantage of its features and don't suffer from bad control interfaces.

4) Some of the other features in FW 2.0 are nice: the multi-select/delete/move in Mail, the scientific calculator, saving images from email/web, some other subtle UI improvement to standardize/clarify some actions. However, I REALLY wish they'd implement software motion correction for the camera, copy/paste, and universal landscape/portrait orientation support for the keyboard. (Actually, does anyone know if the SDK would permit someone to write their own replacement camera app that could do motion compensation?)

5) Anyone done any extensive listening to music on the iPhone 3G? If so, is the audio quality noticibly improved? Other than a preliminary report from iLounge, no one is talking about the audio quality for music. I also don't recall seeing anyone talking about the audio chip in any of the initial teardown reports.

1) Upgrade to 2.0.

2) Use the App Store application that will now be on your home screen. The iTunes application is still required to buy music.

The iTunes app is for music only. There is a dedicated App Store icon in 2.0 for everything else.

Edit: beaten.

1. No, it requires your password each time you open the store so someone can't pick up your phone and then charge hundreds of dollars in apps back to you.

2. I'm having a great time with a lot of these apps, but keep in mind that Push / notification services won't be available to 3rd parties until September

3. Super Monkey Ball is actually pretty great. Graphics aren't amazing (ball is 2D), but I actually really like the controls. Downside there is that when you go to home screen you lose all progress and to really get anywhere you have to beat like 10 stages in a row.

4. Yeah, they're just letting features trickle forward, I guess. I think they want to hold off on more advanced canned Touch gestures until the Mac OS X version starts getting further along and they're more certain that all gestures they decide on remain consistent across their entire upcoming "Touch" lineup.

so,do you have to input a (1) before all the numbers in your contacts before the area code or is it something that we can turn off i settings?

also, anyone in the oc area (irvine, ca) getting absolutely crap reception in their homes? 1 bar IF i'm lucky inside my house.

God dammit. I've reset my router and restored my ipod touch and I am still getting crazy hangs in all internet apps. To the point that safari et all will tell me the server is not responding when clearly it works on my computer over several sites.

Has there been any talk about this on the Apple support forums?

So I was using the headset and listening to music and a call came in, music faded out. Clicked once on the little handset thingy to answer the call. Problem was that when I answered the call the music came back in just as strong and I had to go into the iPod part and pause it so I could actually hear my friend.

Any setting to individually control the volume of the iPod when in the middle of a call?

1) why does my touch do this ultra-slow and long 'backup' pretty much everytime i sync it with itunes?

2) has anyone logged into their me.com site yet? my new password still doesn't let me in.

3) my iphoto opens everytime i sync and tries to get all the photos off the phone. can i stop that from happening automatically?

Well it looks like developers are already updating their Apps. The updates only show up on iTunes for some reason.

Here is hoping nothing breaks.....

Edit: So 5 Apps said they need updating. Only 1 App had update the Version to 1.01, while the rest just had 1.0.

iTunes goes and updates only 2 Apps and stats on the Apps icon that there is 1 more to update. Clicking on the 1 more update sends me to a "you are fully up to date page on this account".

I'm syncing my iPhone to see if the Apps will update. iTunes doesn't really make it clear that you are about to update the Apps. It gave me a message saying "the iPhone has Apps that iTunes does not, would you like to sync".

I just talked with people at Lenox Mall in Atlanta. They have closed off the line for the night, but will be reopening at 9am (instead of noon).

As a side question, what time should I plan on getting there to get out by a reasonable time? I assume as the days progress, each day will not be as bad as the previous day, but any idea? 7am? 8am? 6am? (Reasonable is obviously subjective, I'm hoping to get out by lunch time ish)

after sitting in the pub giving my mates the tour five of them are gettign iPhones and a couple even might break there contract.

The apps, unlimited reak internet & facebook all helped but Shazam was the star with recognising and youtube viewing all the songs playing in the bar.

So, is it safe to upgrade to 2.0 now? I don't have a 3G iPhone yet, but I figure while I wait I'll update my old one as long as it doesn't fucking brick it...

Couple things:

Can you still not copy/paste or text pictures on the new iPhone
You can tap and hold on a photo in Safari or Mail and it will let you copy it to your camera roll. Then you can use the photo in other apps, etc.

so is it sold out everywhere right now or can I just go to an apple/at&t store right now and pick one up?
You can go to an AT&T store to place an order for one that you'll get soon, but you can't just get one right now.

Really? I balked at buying it when I found out that its only for the rest of the year. I mean I shouldn't have been surprised but I dunno. I heard other than the video its worse than the other sports apps.

That's only one thing, but no, you can't.

- copy/paste
- text pictures

That's two things.

But yeah, that's so horribly lame. There's zero reason not to have the ability to copy/paste on this thing yet. And my old shit cell phone from 2004 had the ability to text pictures.

Don't get me wrong, I'm probably going to move to AT&T this year to get an iPhone, but those are two features there's zero reason for not having on there, especially copy/paste.

Well, that and I consider it kind of unforgivable that even their second generation of phones still doesn't support expandable memory. I get that they're trying to encourage people to buy the more expensive models, but c'mon, that's lame.

Either way at $200 baseline the new models are still damn tempting. Gonna stick it out with the 'ole Q and my Sprint SERO plan for abit though. I just can't beat the price.

The low price has me almost sold, but I figured by the second generation, the phone would have normal cell phone features. It's just very strange. There's no logic behind not having those features.

the only feature its really missing is MMS..which i admit is totally weak

besides that my biggest complaint about my iphone is that itunes just blows, im still baffled at the most popular mp3 player in the world's software not allowing you to simply right click and add a song to your player

Yeah it seems like a huge ripoff, SportsTap is amazing plus it's free.

:lol Thank you. That's so true.

I think using the official 2.0 firmware (instead of the leaked one) has greatly improved my battery life on my 1st gen iPhone.

When I was running the leaked firmware, my battery life was pretty crappy. Even running simple apps was draining. However, I just got done playing Super Monkey Ball for like 30 minutes using the correct firmware and my battery meter hasn't moved a pixel.

I'm pretty relieved.

Hmm, my battery life has been absolute shit since upgrading to even the official 2.0 firmware.

the video clips is the main reason to get At Bat over other services. I love how the big plays are available pretty much right after they happen so i spent 5 bucks for it. If they keep the charge at 10 or less for a full season, I'd probably get it again next year.

For pitch by pitch by pitch updates only by text, sports tap is obviously a better value (or just use the MLB wap site...)

@Juice: My battery life on the 3G is really bad. 90 minutes or so of playing a game and on wifi and the meter reads around 50%. yikes.

I previously had a 1st gen for comparison and, on wifi and watching video, the battery life always read to be more full under similar usage. I'll have to see how this goes when I'm back at work next week and can't charge the thing for 10 hours.

Well, I would say the issue with Copy/Paste at this point is how to integrate it into the touch interface in a decent way. I'm not sure how they would do it in an elegant way just yet. I'd like to see it too, but I'm not sure how it'll be implemented.

As for iTunes, while you can't right click and add, you can drag and drop the songs you want. It's a pretty easy way to add what you want to your music player.

Anyone else think that the accuracy of the auto-locate function on the maps has improved with the 2.0 software even on the 1st Gen model? When I'm in the main part of my city it's always worked great, but it's struggled in the suburb that I live in, often being very far off the mark, but when I tried it a couple of times yesterday and today, it found my location very quickly and very accurately.

Well I'm still on EDGE hardware and it's not lasting half the day when I normally could last 1.5 days. Unless it's a fluke, I have to blame the software.

My battery life has been awful since upgrading to the 2.0 software as well. Started on the leaked one but upgraded to the official version last night. Still pretty crappy.

Crazy question. Are custom ringtones impossible with iPhone 3G and 7.7? I want to create an MGS4 codec ringtone but it won't let me save it to the ringtones folder?

Help!!!?
