Crazy question. Are custom ringtones impossible with iPhone 3G and 7.7? I want to create an MGS4 codec ringtone but it won't let me save it to the ringtones folder?

Help!!!?
Yes they are possible, I have about 5 custom ringtones on my 3G. I think somebody posted a couple of threads back how to do it.

Well, I would say the issue with Copy/Paste at this point is how to integrate it into the touch interface in a decent way. I'm not sure how they would do it in an elegant way just yet. I'd like to see it too, but I'm not sure how it'll be implemented.
Couldn't they just do it in the same way one puts their cursor in place in a text box?
Hold finger, little magnifying glass pops up, highlight.

How do you highlight though? You already have your finger pressed on the screen to slide the cursor around.

It's not even close to easy to implement copy/paste within the current UI. If there is a solution, Apple will implement it.

Hmm, I meant like text on a webpage or something.

But yeah, what about text in a text box, like an email as you say?

Well, why not have it depend on how long you hold.
Hold for 1 second as it is now to move cursor, hold for slightly longer, the cursor changes, and you can now highlight.

It took Sony almost 2 years to add a clock to the XMB.

FINALLY with 2.0 you can use WiFi with Airplane mode on. I've really wanted to use my iphone as a multimedia/internet device without the phone sucking out all my battery energyjuice.

Oh sweet!
I hadn't heard that yet.

This really wouldn't work either. You have to be able to hold it longer than a second to position the cursor.

The only thing I could see working is a single tap to highlight a word, double tap for a sentence, and three taps for a whole paragraph. but then how do you copy it? How do you paste it? I sure as hell don't know, but that's why I'm not a UI designer.

So, decided to update from the leaked 2.0 to the official 2.0...blah, updates take forever, started around 11:15 PM EST and it's been nearly 20 minutes now and I'm barely 1/4th of the way through "Restoring iPhone from backup...". At least my iPhone activated though :D

I meant before you start moving your finger.
Could be like.

Hold 1 sec > mag. glass pops up > then move cursor

And then you're done if that's all you wanted to do.

If you wanted to highlight....

Hold 1 sec > mag. glass pops up > then move cursor to where you want to start highlighting > hold longer > then move to highlight

Might work. Then you've got the highlight part down. Then how do you copy/cut? And then paste? All working within the guidelines already established by the UI? It's not as easy as what people would like to think it is, and I'm sure that's why it hasn't been implemented yet.

That's actually a bug. It was something discussed at WWDC, but the regulations actually call for turning off all wireless signals while inflight.

so is it sold out everywhere right now or can I just go to an apple/at&t store right now and pick one up?

There are Apple stores that still have them in stock. AT&T stores continue to receive inventory pretty much every day, but unless you are there REALLY early - don't expect to get a phone.

No, its a bug as not all airlines allow the use of wifi in the air. The discussion was about being able to provide more transparency into whether or not they were proper in airline mode as consumers don't really know the difference.
Ah, I get what you meant.

I thought this demo of a possible copy paste operation by lonelysandwich was pretty decent. It's a year old.

That eReader software has a highlight feature much like a copy and paste should work. Press on the text for a second, then drag to select. Give it a shot.

It's free and it also comes with Tarzan of the Apes and The Last of the Mohicans :D

Phoenix, I was going to go to Lenox tomorrow morning, what time should I get there? (They open at 9am, before the mall even opens I guess)

shazam is fucking AWESOME

i was in a store, i could BARELY hear the music and it was only drums, and i stood in between two people having a conversation and it STILL made the correct guess

what. the. fuck!

As early as you possibly can. I talked to a friend at the store this morning and when the opened at 9AM they had over 100 people already waiting in line!

How does this kind of music-recognition technology work? I'm pretty amazed by it.

Its a complex algorithmic process, but you can look at waveforms. They will have a distinct signature and then compare that to other waveforms. They are generally distinct enough that getting a match isn't all that difficult. Often the hardest part is pulling out the noise from the equation.

The algorithmic/waveform stuff I can understand in theory, but how's the comparison being made? Is there some massive database somewhere where all this music is broken down mathematically? What are programs like Shazam referring to when searching for a match?

Its all going down the wire to a service that is doing the actual lookup. There are companies that have 'fingerprinted' most songs ever created and via a simple web service call they can look at a waveform and extract out the songs.

Per their website:

"Shazam's service is built around a patented proprietary pattern recognition technology that can identify recorded audio even under noisy conditions. This song recognition technology enables users to recognize, iD, and interact with any piece of music at the time they hear it. The Shazam service runs on a hosted service platform and is driven by Europe's largest music information database - over 4,000,000 music tracks, metadata and cover art."

In other semi-iPhone-related news, I got a couple of minutes of hands-on with the "iPhone-killer" Samsung Instinct recently and, hoo boy, what a piece of shit. Clearly inspired in almost every way by the iPhone, but rather than taking existing ideas and improving on them it just feels like a Chinese black market knock-off. Ugly, clumsy UI, cheap plasticky feel, slow response (I got bored waiting for it to cue up a video clip) and some really confusing design choices. In just the few minutes I had to fiddle with it, it really made me realize how true Apple's 3G ad is; that the only thing that's going to "kill" the iPhone... is the next iPhone.

This doesn't surprise me at all. The demo videos on Samsung's own site couldn't hide the sluggishness of the interface. They tried to show off scrolling and it looked painful.

I have to wonder how long it will take before another company can match iPhone 1.0's interface. Will it actually take 5 years? God knows where Apple will be by then. :lol

No, you can sell public domain books, the consumer is just an idiot for buying them when you can get them free from Project Guttenberg, or wherever.

I don't even care about that though, it's worth the $0.99 to get it onto the phone quickly and cheaply for most people. I just think it's stupid to wrap each book up as a separate app. It's lazy.

so i can print up a bunch of public domain books and sell them to people? can i do the same with music and movies? sounds a bit fucked.

I think the HTC Touch Diamond's Flo3D is pretty badass, it looks great and it seems to be quite comparable to iPhone's UI without being a cheap rip off. The only problem with that UI is that it's built over Windows Mobile (yuck), If HTC went head first into making their own custom UI (not just a skin for Win Mobile) I think it'd be something really special.

That's really the problem with a lot of these Windows Mobile/Palm attempts to do iPhone competitors. While on the surface they get a lot of things right, hell the one from some Palm developers even did some things better - as soon as you get out of the application launcher, it all goes to shit pretty quickly.

what the?! 3G iphone is sold out in my town (second largest in Georgia) but we don't even have 3G service here. eh?

3G service isn't a requirement for use so people really don't care that the 3G service isn't available. Most consumers look at the 3G as a "cheap iPhone".

Hopefully it isn't fixed. I wasn't planning on using WiFi on a plane anyways.

I saw videos of that as well and it looked cool. I don't know how quickly you can scroll through contacts, though. it looked very deliberate, one at a time flipping in the demo. There has to be a faster way.

I was very impressed with the revamped opera browser which looks to have caught up with safari in regards to navigation and scrolling/ zooming. (I'll assume that it's stable and robust as well since the opera folks have lots of experience on mobile devices)

But, as has already been said, since the touch flo UI running on top of WM, the old drawbacks still exist.

I'm just thankful that neither myself nor my friends started using MMS in the past so I can use the iPhone and not feel like a big feature is missing :)

Uh...actually I really hope that gets fixed, for obvious reasons - this is the sort of thing that gets using the device (or anything that looks like it) banned on aircraft. But they should at least put in some sort of network connection disabler to handle your concern; I mean, most SE phones on bootup let you decide between "connect" and "no, just be a mediocre music phone."

Potentially stupid question:

Now, with 2.0, the only way I could dick around, write an application, and put it on an iPod Touch would be to pay $99 and throw it on the App Store, right?

couple of quick questions.

Is there a way to open a new web page in a seperate browser/window?

Is there a way to highlight text on a webpage? (like spoilertags)

Thanks

If I have the leaked 2.0 installed is there a way to go back to older firmware and unlock and jailbrake my phone still? Can someone head me in the right direction please?

The bottom right icon in Safari is for switching tabs or opening new pages.

There's no way to highlight text on webpages unfortunately.

Does anyone else find the battery life to be absolutely terrible?

According to the usage statistics, I only got about 2hr 40min out of it (with 3G on and using apps like AIM, Facebook, Safari, etc.) before I got a 10% battery warning.

Is my phone defective?

I know this is the iPhone thread and all so I won't make a big deal but after actually using the phone for a couple of days, I fine it a viable iPhone alternative. Does a few thing the iPhone can't do (audible turn-by-turn GPS as on example). The UI was not as good as teh iPhone, but much of it was ripped directly from the iPhone. No need to totally shit on another phone just becaus you like the iPhone.
