Yes they are possible, I have about 5 custom ringtones on my 3G. I think somebody posted a couple of threads back how to do it.DoctorWho said:Crazy question. Are custom ringtones impossible with iPhone 3G and 7.7? I want to create an MGS4 codec ringtone but it won't let me save it to the ringtones folder?
Help!!!?

Couldn't they just do it in the same way one puts their cursor in place in a text box?Kung Fu Jedi said:Well, I would say the issue with Copy/Paste at this point is how to integrate it into the touch interface in a decent way. I'm not sure how they would do it in an elegant way just yet. I'd like to see it too, but I'm not sure how it'll be implemented.

Hold finger, little magnifying glass pops up, highlight.
Hmm, I meant like text on a webpage or something.Tobor said:How do you highlight though? You already have your finger pressed on the screen to slide the cursor around.
It's not even close to easy to implement copy/paste within the current UI. If there is a solution, Apple will implement it.
Oh sweet!Solideliquid said:FINALLY with 2.0 you can use WiFi with Airplane mode on. I've really wanted to use my iphone as a multimedia/internet device without the phone sucking out all my battery energyjuice.
dallow_bg said:Hmm, I meant like text on a webpage or something.
But yeah, what about text in a text box, like an email as you say?
Well, why not have it depend on how long you hold.
Hold for 1 second as it is now to move cursor, hold for slightly longer, the cursor changes, and you can now highlight.
It took Sony almost 2 years to add a clock to the XMB.
I meant before you start moving your finger.Tobor said:This really wouldn't work either. You have to be able to hold it longer than a second to position the cursor.
The only thing I could see working is a single tap to highlight a word, double tap for a sentence, and three taps for a whole paragraph. but then how do you copy it? How do you paste it? I sure as hell don't know, but that's why I'm not a UI designer.
dallow_bg said:I meant before you start moving your finger.
Could be like.
Hold 1 sec > mag. glass pops up > then move cursor
And then you're done if that's all you wanted to do.
If you wanted to highlight....
Hold 1 sec > mag. glass pops up > then move cursor to where you want to start highlighting > hold longer > then move to highlight

No bug.Phoenix said:That's actually a bug. It was something discussed at WWDC, but the regulations actually call for turning off all wireless signals while inflight.

Ah, I get what you meant.Phoenix said:No, its a bug as not all airlines allow the use of wifi in the air. The discussion was about being able to provide more transparency into whether or not they were proper in airline mode as consumers don't really know the difference.
Kung Fu Jedi said:Might work. Then you've got the highlight part down. Then how do you copy/cut? And then paste? All working within the guidelines already established by the UI? It's not as easy as what people would like to think it is, and I'm sure that's why it hasn't been implemented yet.
LCfiner said:I thought this demo of a possible copy paste operation by lonelysandwich was pretty decent. It's a year old.

How does this kind of music-recognition technology work? I'm pretty amazed by it.DopeyFish said:shazam is fucking AWESOME
i was in a store, i could BARELY hear the music and it was only drums, and i stood in between two people having a conversation and it STILL made the correct guess
what. the. fuck!

The algorithmic/waveform stuff I can understand in theory, but how's the comparison being made? Is there some massive database somewhere where all this music is broken down mathematically? What are programs like Shazam referring to when searching for a match?Phoenix said:Its a complex algorithmic process, but you can look at waveforms. They will have a distinct signature and then compare that to other waveforms. They are generally distinct enough that getting a match isn't all that difficult. Often the hardest part is pulling out the noise from the equation.

Clearly inspired in almost every way by the iPhone, but rather than taking existing ideas and improving on them it just feels like a Chinese black market knock-off. Ugly, clumsy UI, cheap plasticky feel, slow response (I got bored waiting for it to cue up a video clip) and some really confusing design choices. In just the few minutes I had to fiddle with it, it really made me realize how true Apple's 3D ad is; that the only thing that's going to "kill" the iPhone... is the next iPhone.
No, I believe the easiest way is still to own a Mac and use GarageBand.dallow_bg said:
Tobor said:No, you can sell public domain books, the consumer is just an idiot for buying them when you can get them free from Project Guttenberg, or wherever.
I don't even care about that though, it's worth the $0.99 to get it onto the phone quickly and cheaply for most people. I just think it's stupid to wrap each book up as a separate app. It's lazy.
LCfiner said:This doesn't surprise me at all. The demo videos on Samsung's own site couldn't hide the sluggishness of the interface. They tried to show off scrolling and it looked painful.
I have to wonder how long it will take before another company can match iPhone 1.0's interface. Will it actually take 5 years? God knows where Apple will be by then. :lol

The only problem with that UI is that it's built over Windows Mobile (yuck), If HTC went head first into making their own custom UI (not just a skin for Win Mobile) I think it'd be something really special.

Is there a way to open a new web page in a seperate browser/window?
Is there a way to highlight text on a webpage? (like spoilertags)
Thanks

According to the usage statistics, I only got about 2hr 40min out of it (with 3G on and using apps like AIM, Facebook, Safari, etc.) before I got a 10% battery warning.
Is my phone defective?
