what the?! 3G iphone is sold out in my town (second largest in Georgia) but we don't even have 3G service here. eh?

The guy in line a few places behind me (who also waited 3+ hours) at the AT&T store was asking someone near him, "What is 3G anyway?" So, yeah.

Anyone having issues with their touch on 2.0?

Took me 2 hours to get it working again yesterday after the update. Wouldnt restore/update without crashing.

Finally got it working, and now im trying to sync my music back to it, but its only syncing 5 or 6 songs before timing out and stopping.

Edit: It appearst o be working now... only a day after i started trying!

I find it hilarious that last year, when the original iPhone came out Apple was soundly criticized for not including 3G and GPS on many fronts. At the time, a number of people said that those items would kill battery life.

Fast forward a year, those items are added to the iPhone, and sure enough, people are complaining about battery life. 3G eats batteries. Period. GPS as well, although to a lesser degree. It's one of the trade offs for having those features and the increased network speeds.

My strong suspicion is that many downloadable apps are chewing up battery in a bad way. (I tried one of the games for maybe 30 minutes, and it destroyed almost half my battery. Since it kind of sucked anyway...it went straight into the "delete" pile.) I haven't seen the SDK myself, but I'd be surprised if it automatically provided CPU management capabilities. If iPhone software is like other software, then developers are going to have to go out of their way to write apps which maximize battery life by minimizing system utilization. As far as I can tell, "normal" functions -- music, web, etc. -- seem to be fine after the 2.0 update on my first-gen iPhone.

3G service isn't a requirement for use so people really don't care that the 3G service isn't available. Most consumers look at the 3G as a "cheap iPhone".

Hah! That's funny. I hadn't even realized it before.

I was so caught up in my pretentious world as a pragmatist who, at every step of the way, realized that the 3G was going to be more expensive and more stringent a contract. Not less.

Still waiting on Sim activation from CPW/o2 UK, I read on other forums that switching the phone on and off periodically has helped a couple of people get activated since thats when the phone searches for a network. And apparently CPW have word from o2 that activations should be done by midday tomorrow. Heres hoping.

In the meantime i found a really nifty app for OS X called facebook sync which downloads all your facebook friends info and populates it into your contacts (along with photos, email addresses, phone numbers, birthdays which get added to iCal). The latest version disabled the option for downloading numbers/emails etc because it violated Facebooks ToS but you can easily get around it by changing a string in the apps config settings

One annoying thing i have found though is that calendar on the iPhone does not display my Birthdays calendar because its listed under subscriptions. Hopefully they sort this bug out.

Nope - see this link http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html

The battery life sucks and they know it. I am pissed.

The phone's battery life definitely takes some "breaking in". One of the first things I did friday was make sure I had a full charge and then completely depleted the battery. With that I only got a little over 2 1/2 hours of usage, mostly browsing with some limited youtube thrown in.

I've obviously been using the thing like a madman for the rest of the weekend, so its been on and off the charger quite a bit. This morning, after a night being left on the charger I surfed for an hour and 15 minutes(with a few youtube videos) and the battery is only about 15-20% drained. Compared to my test friday where the battery was around 40% depleted at the same point.

Turning off location services and fetch off helps. As does stepping back to Edge(which works with Pandora pretty well) when you're not browsing. In my case my 3G signal is usually consistent at only 1/2-1 bar which I'm sure puts some extra strain on the battery.

The algorithmic/waveform stuff I can understand in theory, but how's the comparison being made? Is there some massive database somewhere where all this music is broken down mathematically? What are programs like Shazam referring to when searching for a match?

I'm pretty sure it is Skynet preparing for - Terminator: The Musical.

Hmm.... this is kinda shitty to hear about.

This phone looks like a great piece of work, but if the battery is terrible than it doesn't really help me a whole lot.

When I had my windows mobile phone, I'd browse the net (3G) and play Worms a lot and the phone would make it through the day without an issue. Sounds like people are going down after 2.5 hours of heavy use?

Blah... sounds like I'll be waiting for the HTC or perhaps the SE Xperia.

Blackberry Bold's browser still looks to be shit, so that's off the list.

I think people are just using it more than they would normally, i know these past few days i've almost never put it down. Once the newness wears off it'll get better.

Does anyone else find the battery life to be absolutely terrible?

According to the usage statistics, I only got about 2hr 40min out of it (with 3G on and using apps like AIM, Facebook, Safari, etc.) before I got a 10% battery warning.

Is my phone defective?

LMAO. Maybe I'm the exception to the rule, but I've used 4 different 3G based AT&T phones in the last year and none of them get good battery life when constantly reaching out for data packets. My tilt wouldn't last more than 6hrs when it was a heavy work email day. My blackjack and blackjack2 would do a decent job, but i'd find myself having to power off my phone on my way home - about 10hrs after taking it off the charger. oh, and my Motorola Q ate batteries like candy when I wanted to use Opera, Bluetooth, and still get my work email. I was lucky not to get a dead battery tone out of it before bed most nights.

I turned off the 3G on the iPhone the second I got it. I made sure to turn down the brightness to 1/2 and turn auto brightness off. I leave my bluetooth disabled until i get in the car on my drive home from work - no one calls me @ 6am on my drive to work. So far I'm very happy with the battery life/performance balance that the phone provides. Using GPS on the Moto Q was impossible to do in any timely manner, which meant eating more and more battery. If I'm outdoors or in the car, I can open Google maps and have my pin point location within 10 seconds. That's amazing. Basically what i'm trying to say; the battery life is much much better than it could be - but yes, it could be better.

Just keep 3G and WiFi off when you're not using them and the battery should be fine. Mine lasted the entire day yesterday with heavy use, including tons of 3G and GPS directing.

Why the fuck should we have to disable 3G when not using it? That defeats the point of the phone.

This is ridiculous, I'm contemplating canceling everything and switching back to Verizon even though I absolutely love this phone.

If your not using it, why does it defeat the purpose of the phone? You simply turn it on whn you want to utilize... it takes two seconds. Edge service will still be running to grab your e-mail.

I didn't buy a $300 phone and a $75 monthly contract to micro-manage it like that. This is ridiculous and the battery is garbage. I think I'm going to write an E-Mail rant to Jobs.

Because Steve has such a long and proud history of helping people who e-mail him complaining about stuff they should have already known...

First of all, bitching to Jobs about my MacBook Pro that kept having to be repaired resulted in a new laptop.

Second, I'm eeking out just under three hours of use which is PATHETIC. You're supposed to get at least 5 hours of 3G data usage (browsing, apps, etc.) according to the battery usage stats he talked about.

Don't other 3G smartphones have the same battery problems? They're all listed at around 3 to 5 hours talk time on 3G.

And, on those phones, since you can have background processes, you have to micromanage MORE stuff than with the iphone and head to task manager to turn shit off.

oh man, I'm just thinking how bad the backlash would have been if Apple had allowed background running apps like everyone screamed for back in Feb. The battery would be dead in an hour with AIM, twitter, flickr, etc clients all downloading data simultaneously.

Does the iPhone charged when docked to a computer? While the battery life is shit, i figure the thing will be plugged in most of the time to my laptop at work.

Yeah, via USB. That is how I always charge mine.

EDIT: Missed it by that much.

Yes, if you have iTunes on the computer. (and i think the phone has to be installed?)
It doesn't charge on random computers or something, wouldn't for me.

I'm not sure the specifics.

Actually its poor software design. The phone itself should be pushing down to EDGE until you kick in to do some serious surfing. People shouldn't HAVE to go into settings and turn it on everytime they want to do something, this is something they should have resolved via a change in the software interface.

That is a fair argument. If Goodcow sounds his letter, he should include that. I'm sure they could fix the problem via a firmware update.

It will charge on random computers so long as they have USB2 and you plug it into a USB2 port. Many people are plugging them into keyboards and such and that's not going to work as keyboard USB ports don't carry power.

Wasn't working for me at work.
My other devices charge just fine (older phones, Zune, etc). 1st gen iPhone didn't.

You might want to check the cable, because I charge my iPhone when I'm my server room by plugging it into a Dell Linux PowerEdge server.

yes, through usb 2.

Thanks! Seeing as I spend 14 hours a day in front of a Mac Pro or Macbook, charging shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Now, the six hour wait to buy one? That's an issue (and bloody ridiculous).

So I'm on a family plan and just got an iphone for myself. Now when I log into the account my number and phone isn't listed as part of the plan. I thought they just added the extra $30 data plan on top of my family plan? Or did I somehow just get open an individual account??

Wait a couple of weeks.

So are there still lines and delays at Apple stores? Can I get one today or tomorrow and not have it be an ordeal?

Yes there are still lines and delays. During the workday tomorrow you will have a better shot, but there will likely still be delays until Wednesday or so.

My phone seems to be doing better on the battery today. Part of the thing that probably really killed it the past two days was that when I upgraded to the leaked firmware and then again to the official, my iPhone downloaded a ton of old e-mail messages on my four e-mail accounts both times. Every time I looked at it there were 25 new messages waiting.

Today, back to normal use, it seems to be much better so far.

I'm still amazed that amidst all these lineups, I was able to walk into a store and buy one with 20 minutes. Of course I waited an hour for the activation - :D

ive noticed with 2.0 there are even more bugs in the software, didn't think it was possible...the keyboard is laggy, its having trouble sending messages, not to mention it crashes a lot... figures.

I had the map and Safari crash on me a couple of times yesterday. I'm looking forward to 2.0.1.

Slightly off topic here, but hoping for some suggestions:

I am Irish, and the iTunes store over here is barebones (no games, movies or TV shows) However, I just got my hands on a $50 gift card to buy some of the recent games that were released, and with money left over I was wondering does anyone recommend other stuff to get. In particular, any TV show recommendations?

I already bought Gladiators Season 1 due to the crazy GAF thread bout the show :)

so, according to the various maps I've seen, just about all of MA is 3G covered. I'm a few (like 3-5) miles outside downtown Boston, in Brighton. And...I still apparently on the Edge network.

What the hell?

People on the MacRumors forums are saying that some parts of the AT&T 3G map are areas that have yet to actually be wired up for 3G, but should be soon. They're also getting Edge only connections.

i will say, however, that I am getting WAAAY better service in my apartment now, and since I have wireless here it isn't an issue, but I damn well better have it in Quincy at work.

Anyone have any big pictures of the white iphone?

I'll take one or two tonight if I get a chance. I went to the store fully expecting to get a black one, but the white one just looked a shit load better.

Because Apple's battery estimates have always been dead-on-balls accurate.

Apple should've put the biggest battery into this thing that they could afford, it's apparent they didn't.

Let's all be clear about this - 3G eats batteries, period. So unless you want to have a laptop sized iPhone, the chances of you getting outstanding battery life are pretty low. What Apple NEEDS to do is change the software so that power management is more sensible than an on/off switch. Battery life will get better for certain as it doesn't look like they tried to do ANYTHING to improve battery life, they made the user try to figure it out.

But 3G also applies to voice not just data. Pushing down to Edge would sort of kill that functionality.
