push/fetch is what's killing the batteries duders

turn it offff

How much is it really? The default is set to manual, which in theory shouldn't kill battery right? I have mine set to check every hour. Once an hour shouldn't be too bad should it?

But 3G also applies to voice not just data. Pushing down to Edge would sort of kill that functionality.

It takes less time to turn on the 3G ant. than it does for you to finish dialing or for the interrupt from the ringer to take place.

Let's all be clear about this - 3G eats batteries, period. So unless you want to have a laptop sized iPhone, the chances of you getting outstanding battery life are pretty low. What Apple NEEDS to do is change the software so that power management is more sensible than an on/off switch. Battery life will get better for certain as it doesn't look like they tried to do ANYTHING to improve battery life, they made the user try to figure it out.

I know. It's why I junked my N75 and went to my lovely EDGE-based K790a. :) I've made a commitment to not even considering the iPhone until the 3rd iteration, and I'm stickin' to that. :)

I'm not sure where Apple was coming from in saying that the battery life was somehow vastly improved.

I can't find the link from Google, but an engineer on the Android project made some sort of statement akin to "the iPhone wasn't designed at all with battery in mind" in comparison to how other phone OS's are architected (Android included). Not sure I totally agree, since he brought up the MIDP stack as a how-to.

Is book shelf any good? The reviews look pretty bad but I want an e-reader...

Edit: One that I can put my own ebooks on. I've got a lot of tech books in ebook format.

Take a look at Stanza. It's free and you can download public domain books for free.(LOL at anyone who paid $0.99 for them)

Yay! Just upgraded to 2.0 and it's awesome. Do we know if AIM uses texts or if it really IS free yet? (I don't know why it would use texts, I just remember reading that as a concern since you can use it over EDGE/3G and not just WiFi)

100% free, says so on the site.

I should probably get one of these -- I've been an ATT customer for a while. Does the monthly fee HAVE to be $75 minimum, per month, for the iPhone service?

I don't think my GPS works. I still haven't got it to pinpoint my exact location. It's always a few blocks away, and it stops pulsing after a while. Also, I have tried it outside in broad daylight, with a full 3G reception. Anyone else have this problem? I'm in San Francisco, so that may be one reason.

I don't really care about that, I want to read books I already have. I'll look into Stanza though.

Picked up my first iPhone today =) Got to Lenox Mall in Atlanta at 7:15 and was one of the first in line, so basically had it all taken care of by 9:30 (store opened at 9:00)!

Lucky bastard. I ordered my from the AT&T store here in Evanston (Chicago) and my order is showing backordered and that it should ship in 2-3 days. I hate waiting...argh!

my iphone 3g isn't sending or receiving texts for some reason. they appear to send fine and when people send sms to me, there is no error. however, the recipients of my messages never get them and i never get any text messages...is this a technical problem or a problem with ATT or what?

As others have mentioned while running apps the battery life is pretty bad, I was running Crash racing app on a full charge original iphone on Airplane mode and after about 2 hours my battery was almost dead. 2.0 seems to run fine on other stuff but even an app like Pandora the battery goes way too fast. I sure hope with better programing things will improve but I can't imagine a game like God of War portable or even something simpler like elite beat agents DS running on this for very long at all, this battery seems to be much worse for games than the original PSP. Still 2.0 is the best update so far.

So here's a question for the gaf ipod touch/iphone owner-

Is it worth buying?

I live in canada so as far as I can tell I have to deal with the enormous cost of entry- 199 for the phone, 35 dollar activation fee and to get the cheapest iphone plan + the data plan costs with all other fees and shit about 100 dollars a month.

That's a huge price. Just grabbing an ipod touch though is like what 300 bucks for a decent one and it can do many of the same things other then being a phone. I have a perfectly fine phone currently that has a couple years left on it's contract through bell, it's shared with a couple family members mostly for emergency sake but getting an iphone would be 100% for me alone. I like the portable media features like youtube and web browsing and it's neat enough as an mp3 and video player as well I suppose.

so I guess the second question- the ipod touch only comes with wifi support ? and using the 3g network requires the cellphone plans ?

1. You have 2+ years left on a plan with a company that cannot offer the iphone
2. Only phones can use the phone network (which 3G is)
3. The Touch is essentially the iPhone minus cell phone functionality
4. You can't get the iPhone without a plan so might as well get the touch

Here's the main question: Do you want to have the internet wherever you go? I do and I jumped from an ipod touch to iphone to get it. I love having maps anywhere in the city as well as google and wikipiedia searches. it's very cool and really extends the iphone to be a super powerful device.

However, not everyone cares about that. If all you need is wifi connectivity for intermittent net access and a simple phone to carry alongside the ipod touch, then that's a more cost effective way to go about it.

(to be specific, the ipod touch only supports wifi and any network data plan - 3G or EDGE - requires a cell contract)

I was able to pick up a phone today. I got to the Apple store at 9:30 AM and was 35th in line. At 10:00 AM there was about 100 people in line. And when I left the store at 12:00 PM, there were about 300 people in line. Once I actually got helped inside the store, it took about 10 mintues to set my new AT&T account up and port my number over from T-Mobile. Very simple process. The Apple employee that helped me out said the majority of the problems over the last couple of days have been from existing customers because of the complexity of the whole eligibility process. Anyhow, after having it for ~7 hours now, I'm definitely pretty excited as this phone rocks!

Are there any apps out there that cab play divx files directly? (no converting)

if not do you think there could be one in the future?

If you think that the price of an iPhone is an "enormous" cost of entry, then yeah, it's not the product for you.

iFixIt says it looks like Apple used an 1150mAh battery in the 3G iPhone, but a 1400mAh battery in the original iPhone.

RUH-ROH?

http://live.ifixit.com/Guide/First-Look/iPhone3G
The battery. Put your soldering irons away, they won't be needed! Apple part #616-0372.
The recycle marker on the battery is blacked out with a sharpie. Suspicious...
We were all expecting a bigger battery, and I can't verify this, but this page references the part number on the battery and lists a capacity of 1150 mAh, not the 1400 mAh in the original. Can anyone dig up more information?

I want to keep stomping out this awful rumor. AIM does not use text messages - NO application on the iPhone outside of those that specifically send SMS messages can or will be counted as SMS messages. This rumor comes from old crappy AIM implementations where the carriers had them use SMS as a transport for messaging. AIM on the iPhone talks directly to the OSCAR protocol servers and that's how it works. There is no mystery or anything else - IT DOES NOT USE SMS MESSAGES!

If anybody you know is spreading this nasty rumor, slap them 3 times: once for me, once for yourself, and once for iPhone users everywhere.

I say enormous cost because in canada you HAVE to sign up for a 36 month contract and pay 200 for the phone plus 35 dollars to activate it.

So in the end that's nearly 4000 dollars to own and use it over those 3 years.

The thing is , the biggest selling point is the ability to use the internet basically anywhere with 3G access instead of being stuck using wifi . I just don't know if it's really worth it or not :P

AIM also crashed 13 times in one day for me according to the MobileDevice crash logs!

however you CAN send texts for free in the program, so if you want to save some $

Prices are the same here, although it's usually a two year contract instead of three. You have to take the price of the contract out of the equation to a certain degree though, as no matter what cell phone you buy, you're going to be paying for service on it. That's also a monthly fee, and not really a cost of entry.

Again though, if you have to ask...

Wow I use AIM on the EDGE iPhone and I think it has crashed like once since I got it on Friday, and I used it extensively yesterday at the Bon Jovi concert in Central Park.

You can also try this web app:

It was serving me well before the App Store came online. Supports TXTs and PDF, and should be even better with 3G speeds now.

So what is the consensus about 3G cases? I really like a case I saw a guy in line have for his 2G, but it's not available right now.

http://www.goincase.com/products/detail/slider-case-cl59044/1

What cases do you guys have? I need a case and possibly a screen protector, if they don't take away accuracy and functionality much.
I'm using a black "gel" case that AT&T had on Friday, does what I want it to do and that is prevent the phone from slipping out of my sweaty hands.

Brand and name? Pic maybe? I'm looking for one but can't find them on stores and I don't want to buy online without seeing the actual thing.

Man, i wish Apple would get a 32GB+ version of the phone out, because I really like the white phone - I don't understand all the hate it gets. The only thing that might make it better would be if they changed all the black on the front of the phone to white too, but I'd have to actually see it done (photoshop someone?) before deciding whether it would look alright though.

Like that except in black. Its from a company called Incipio. AT&T was selling them instore on Friday. My local one didn't get them in until the afternoon though.

http://www.ZAGG.com

has a nice 2 piece protector thing... i pre-ordered mine a while ago... it's $25 for both piece and free shipping, and the stuff is relatively grippy... and it's clear so it just makes the iphone always look nice.

NICE!! I'd love that. Gives the phone a more consistent look, because as it stands right now you've got three major color components in the casing - white, chrome, and then black. Aside from the screen image itself (which could be remedied if Apple would give us a background color/picture feature) it's a much more consistent look.
