I did pretty much the same thing with my wife. If you can get the upgrade price, you'll just have your current plan + $30 data. So it would be $99.99 + all those taxes + one off activation fee (if you're on the lowest voice plan).

For some reason, I'm not eligible for the upgrade price according to my local AT&T store, so now I'm going to have to wait for December when our contract runs out. I guess I'm ok with that because I can now ask for a 16GB phone for Christmas :)

So, I've stayed away from looking at my friends' iPhones since they came out, and today I accidentally played with one for about fifteen minutes. So now I want to cancel my service with T Mobile and go buy one. I saw a site a long time ago that detailed how you can cancel out of cell phone contracts without termination fees - does anyone know what I'm talking about, or just have any advice?

I don't know about canceling contracts, but I do know that I bought one right after Christmas, unlocked it, and have been enjoying it on T-Mobile ever since with no problem at all. Just something to consider.

I'll share my own experience making custom ring tones on linux.

You need mplayer (you should have this already, if not install it immediately), and a program called mp3splt.

For whatever reason I couldn't get mp3splt to compile, but I found out after a good while trying to do so, that you don't even need to. It comes with a binary you can just run from a shell. And really, that's all you need for the task at hand.

Cut your MP3 to 30 seconds:

mp3splt $1 0.0 0.30 -o filename.mp3

Convert your MP3 to WAVE:

mplayer -ao pcm filename.mp3 -ao pcm:file="filename.wav"

There are programs to convert the wave to M4A directly on linux, but I didn't bother with it. I HAD to have a windows box just to use my damn iPhone so I just copy the wave to my windows machine and convert it to AAC in iTunes. Then do the file rename 'trick' to make it M4A.

Can we all agree that iPhone software version 2.0 is the buggiest OS ever created? I seriously have no idea what the hell it's doing most of the time.

I'm also wondering about service plans. Currently, my wife and I have 5 months left on a family plan contract with AT&T. We both have cheapass LG phones. My wife is the primary name on the account and she added me to her AT&T account when my old contract ran out with Verizon. I am the one that will be getting the iPhone because she can't handle the awesome and sucks at technology. For some strange reason right now, when I make a current call on my phone, it shows my wife's name on the recipient's caller ID, instead of my name. I'm guessing its because she's listed as primary on our account. Is anyone here an AT&T employee or service plan guru and can tell me how something like this is handled? Do I have to get a brand new account of my own or does AT&T have a plan that will let my wife keep her current phone and then simply Add me on an iPhone plan and charge us the difference?

That is no problem. If you log in to your AT&T account you can actually change the names that are associated with each line on the account. Give that a try. As for getting an iPhone, assuming your line is "eligible for an upgrade" (and it should be) all you need to do is go in to the store and buy it. They will switch it over, add the $30 data plan to your line, and you will be billed an $18 upgrade fee on your next bill.

If you are on a legacy plan (like the $60 850 minute family plan I have) and they tell you that you have to change it, tell them they are wrong. They pulled that stunt with me, but I later called CS and they were able to switch it right back for me.

Log on to the AT&T website and check your upgrade eligibility there. If her line is ready for an upgrade you could always work out something where she upgrades to the iPhone, then you switch SIM cards (and have AT&T then move the data plan over to your line).

It definitely has issues, that's for sure. In my case, it's generally stability issues, but it's not so bad that I don't know what it's doing. What exactly is causing you to be confused?

thanks for posting this!!! Great program!
Just wanted to say, someone posted it earlier in the thread, I'm just regurgitating. I couldn't find their post to give proper credit though for the initial discovery.

I can agree that App Store apps on 2.0 are very buggy/unstable right now, but the base OS 2.0 services seem as stable as they have been in previous releases. Which isn't to say rock-solid but far from the buggiest OS I've seen.

yeah, they need to release 2.1 really soon. mine crashes many times a day.

and i've been messing with mxtube off of cydia today. it's really great, but i wish

-you could actually read the full titles of the videos in search and in your list
-you could, i don't know, ORGANIZE your video list
-integration with the 'videos' app

2.0 has SIGNIFICANT issues, and don't think that Apple doesn't know about them or didn't know about them before shipping. MANY of these issues were reported by testers as bugs in the OS long before the platform shipped. But Apple had a date they wanted to keep so they pushed it out the door which is what happens when arbitrary dates drive engineering.

I'm still getting hit with the "battery no update" but that seems to be a regression from a prior version of the firmware. I will be using the phone for hours and the battery will show as full and then all of a sudden its out of power. D'oh. Maybe you should update the battery status!

Why doesn't Apple hire more engineers?

I can't wait for 2.1, I hope it has significant fixes.

I've never used an iPhone before my 3G with 2.0, but from what I've heard, the OS was significantly less laggy and less buggy on 1.1.4. I want to experience that :(

Crashes due to 3rd party apps I can excuse, crashes and lag in the official apps aren't as excusable.

Apple please update the firmware to include some sort of audible sound that repeats when you miss a call, you have a new text message, or a new voicemail.

K? Thanks.

I'd like it to vibrate more than once on a mail/text. I miss the first vibrate half the time, and I don't like keeping my ringer volume at max to hear the sounds outside cause it makes the clicking of the keyboard really loud too.

Undeux said:
Can you add a custom sound for when you get a text message? I don't see any option for that.

Not that I know of :/ That would solve my problem too cause I'd just make a custom fairly loud sound.

I'm sure they would love to, but since they are intent to keep their teams on the west coast they have stupidly large amounts of competition from other folks on that coast like Yahoo, Google, and Microsoft.

As long as there's an option to turn it right back off again. I would hate this.

This is pretty much a standard feature on any cell phone out there. You miss a call you get a auditory or vibration reminder until you hit a button. Generally the beep/vibration is set to once every few minutes or so. It blows me away that this is not on the iphone since there is no visual indicator it's quite necessary.

My old Samsung would vibrate as an initial notification. Then if the phone wasn't touched, it would beep after three minutes, but it wouldn't loop or repeat.

Any kind of "hey look there's a message, let me keep beeping like Motorola's low battery notification" would be a pain in the ass.

I'm not an idiot, I've had plenty of phones in the past. I've always hated that feature. I was actually relieved the iPhone didn't do it.

I'm not saying don't add it, I'm saying keep it an option. I'm not sure how that's ever a problem for anybody.

Well this just isn't true. Sometimes I can't slide answer a call until I press a volume button. And how about when I'm typing a standard text message or email and it enters slo-mo mode? None of this happened to me before.

I used to think it was the apps (and some apps are indeed buggy) but now I firmly believe the 2.0 update is the biggest culprit.

Exactly how my pre-iPhone worked as well. I wouldn't want it beeping at me all the time either, but as long as it's an option that can be turned on or off, I'm ok with it.

Preferably Apple would put in some sort of preference.

Missed Call
Text Message
Email
Voicemail

All would have the following settings option for each type

Reminder - Yes/No
Number of reminders - Once/Repeating/choose # of times
Time of reminder - 1 minute/2 minutes/3 minutes/choose number of minutes
Reminder type - Audible/Vibrate

I dunno something like that.

I've never seen a phone with this feature :/ My old one nor my friends phones, anyway.

EDIT:

I'm sure it's on their list. Hopefully behind video recording and copy and paste. ;)

It'd be great if rogers let you check your usage online. Go rogers :/

Anyone dropped the $10 on the NetShare App yet? It allows you to tether your laptop to your iPhone for Edge and 3G connections. Wondered how well it worked.

It was originally on iTunes, then pulled, and now it's back. Interesting.

Hmmm, it's made by Nullriver. They make excellent apps. I swear by Connect 360. This has to violate your AT&T contract though.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Figured thats why it was pulled from the App Store to begin with. If I had a 3G, I'd probably bite, but I don't need to tether my laptop on Edge. Something like this would be incentive for me to jump to the 3G though.

Is this on the Canadian store, anyone know?

edit: I've seen some posts on forums that called CSRs confirming that if you're on the 6GB data plan tethering is allowed

Fire up iTunes and do a search. Should be easy to find, and from what I understand, it was only pulled from the U.S. App Store earlier.

I'm asking because I've searched on the App Store on my phone and no luck. :(

I'll try clicking a direct link from home however, I've heard that has better success. BoxOffice isn't showing up in search for me right now either so something feels wonky.

When I picked my phone up they said absolutely no tethering. I'm on the 6GB deal. I wonder if there is any truth to this though!! That would be neat!

I don't know officially either, my gut was leaning towards no. But apparently some people called CSRs and they said yes. Might have to place a call myself, I just don't want to call and have them say no and flag my phone for "tether watch" :lol

Just did a search on my phone and found it. Hopefully it's just something wonky with your phone connection at the moment.

1. You can't sent MMS. Sorry. You can e-mail it though!
2. You should just be able to set it up in the app?
3. Palringo supports AIM, MSN, Yahoo, and others.
4. No video. Sorry again!

seems that Palringo is not what I am looking for, I need a MSN that can be run in the background while I do other stuff.....

thanks Seth C for the help, I guess I have to wait for a MSN.

but how to set up the Hotmail email account to the email button on the Iphone is not working for me, according to the apple site it seems I cant register a Hotmail account to the email as it is not supporting something...
