Sorry for asking an OT question here but there are enough apple fans here to answer this quickly... When will apple hold a conference to refresh their ipod/laptop/imac lines for this fall? Isn't usually this month? Thanks.

Next month: it usually takes place in early September.

Here's a helpful link you may want to look at: http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/

in september I am going to NYC, any chance of buying a Iphone without a contract from AT&T ?

I just want to buy the phone without contract.

No, they make you sign the contract in-store upon purchase.

whoops. Accidentally stumbled into a 3G purchase today. I guess I'm going to be paying Rogers slightly more of a fortune for the next few years. -_-

Same things happened to me 2 days ago... "When do people usually come in for iPhones?".. I was just curious! "we have them right now!" er....

I bought Monkey Ball and was actually surprised it's quite good. Better than the Wii version for sure. The graphics are really nice and the control feels more solid (albeit sensitive and takes a while to get used to). Those leaving negative impressions about the game are on drugs in my opinion. For AUD$12.99 it's a damn steal.

Yeah, exactly. I walked into the store absolutely sure they didn't have it. The guy says something along the lines of "sorry buddy. We have some in stock, but only a dozen black 16 gigs left."

:lol

The funny / scary thing is that the plan I moved to is actually better than my old one for the same price, so while $30/month for data is not exactly something I needed, on average my bill shouldn't be that much different. I just have to wait for the 20th as the pro-rating could absolutely destroy my bill, though.

What's your plan now?

Whew, looks like I've got my phone setup with my US account now. The Canada store is almost barbaric by comparison. Go Team Venture!

And unlike any SE phone ever, it's easy to scrub through a podcast. !woooooo!

Moved up to the $35 MY5 plan. Way better minutes, + the MY5 is canada-wide, which is pretty useful. I think in the end I'll be paying something like +40 but since I used to go over my caps fairly regularly I'm guessing it's going to average around +30 more, which is the cost of the data plan anyway. Long term I guess that sucks but the buyout is small enough that if they ever smarten up with the plans I could do that.

(Obviously compared to Sprint or Cingular it's fucking highway robbery but it's either that or buy a $80 replacement headset for my SE every 6 months. bleh.)

The only prob is waiting for the next billing cycle, as until that happens I am stuck under a pro-rated version of the old plan (scary!)

Considering that Canada had actually one of the worst sales records for the phone in the entire world and have cut their upgrade restrictions on them from 12 months to 3 months to get them out the door and not be an embarrassment in the eyes of Apple, you should have anticipated that they had some. I was going to get one, but I'll wait for the next model with UMTS-LTE (aka 3.5G or 4G, depending on who you ask) support. Probably on a different carrier, too, considering what a joke this launch was in terms of actual sales and Apple will want to partner with a company that doesn't suck.

And, as an aside, JAPAN had the second-largest launch of the phone in the entire world, beaten in sales only by the US. So much for it being a dud there.

When I got my iPhone, I switched my plan over, and it wasn't going to take effect until my next billing cycle, but the reps at the store I bought it at made a call to Rogers and got it activated for me right away. So I just paid for 3 days (11th-14th) of my new plan, and then July 15th to August 14th has been fully my new plan.

Is it possible to upgrade the hdd in an iphone? I'm probably gonna cave in the coming weeks, and $100 for 8GB more doesn't sound like such a bargain. But 8GB alone seems kinda gimped. Anyone seeing themselves hitting the 8GB storage limit with a decent amount of media and apps? PEACE.

No, you can't upgrade it. Solid state memory is not easily updatable, and this really isn't an HDD. Spend the extra $100 if you think you'll need the space, but that's actually not bad for solid state storage.

I have a first gen 8 GB model with about 300 songs on it, 4 full length movies (original Star Wars Trilogy and Raiders of the Lost Ark), and 6 or 8 apps, and I still have more than 3 gigs of space left.

Thanks man, that's the kind of info I needed. I'll just go with the 8GB model. I'll only be using free apps, no movies and probably synch 4GB of music. I mostly want it for the organizer and gps functions. I was gonna wait for Sony-Ericsson to bring a good iphone competitor, but that ain't happening. I hope I don't get raped on the plan. PEACE.

You're in the U.S. right? The plans are pretty well spelled out, nothing really hidden. You shouldn't get raped on it.

I would get the 16GB. It's only a 100 more and twice the storage capacity. Apple may be gouging you slightly with higher profit margins, but it's still better value for your money IMO.

There's no such thing as enough storage on an mp3 player in my experience. You always fill it up, delete stuff to make room, and get annoyed when you discover that you threw away that particular song you want to listen to yesterday.

Statistics don't matter much when you are in a single geographic location that has been wall-to-wall sold out since launch. It has been far easier for me to find a Wii instock this last month. Wii Fit, even! I'm sure Ontario has plenty but that's a different Canada. :lol

DarkJC: Thanks for the info. They didn't seem to be able to switch like that at the store I went to, but it shouldn't be too hard waiting out the remaining handful of days.

Now I just need to get a decent in-ear headphone set with the speaker, and...I guess some sort of slip out case. The always on stuff sounds interesting but I gather most of them don't work with the 3G dock?

Actually, a good question comes to mind: should I be closing apps using the 5 second hold-down of the home button, or is it fine to just tap the button once? (I'm just speaking of the built in apps, like the camera, maps, browser, iPod).

I keep seeing people mentioning battery problems if you don't close apps, but I noticed when I did itunes setup that the apps I hard-closed previously had what seemed to be crash dump logs.

(I'm using a 3G, no non-built in apps yet.)

Just tap it once, it's all I do. Apps like games will obviously eat your battery, as well as apps that use a lot of data like last.fm, but I've never had abnormal battery life after exiting out of them like normal.

EDIT: Upon reading your post more closely, tapping once like normal for built-in apps is fine as well, obviously. I've never held it for 5 seconds. Keep in mind that the battery just gets used up if you're doing lots of surfing on 3G.

Also your store was probably able to but the problem is that they have to call some kind of Rogers "store service" line, and unless they really need something they'd rather not cause you can be on hold for a while. When I got my phone it was something we did as we were waiting for their shitty sales central to process my phone activation, so it made sense.

Yeah, I imagine 3G and video are just chugging the battery away. But thanks, you seem to back up the theory that for native apps the hold-down might be force-exiting, like killing an app in windows with task manager. Probably best not to do that all the time. ;)

I just got my first real phone with the iphone today. I've always just used free phones that came with the plans so they were like $1 phones and had no features besides call people and txt people.

What should I do first?

Thanks,

Well, hook it up to iTunes, I guess. Half the point to me is to pull podcasts/tv shows off the US iTunes store. But there seem to be a lot of interesting apps (the only game I'm convinced to get is Trism, though.)

Download some free games like mahjong or solitaire.

Any advice on cases?

I was either thinking one of the invisible cases or something that carries the phone and can be clipped to my belt.

I have stopped getting the pop ups for things like new text messages. Is there an option hidden somewhere to turn them on an off?

Did you set a passcode? I know the option is grouped with the passcode.

I live in downtown Vancouver and work at an AASP, part of my job is to pay attention to these things. Availability after the first shipment has been totally fine, unless you want a white one, but Apple's undershipped those across the board. The problem was that the second and third shipments took too long to get there, and I think Rogers was actually sending unsold stock from other stores to locations where the phone was a hot seller.
Like I said, I'll stick with my 2G phone with no data plan until the new carrier hits next year and we get an iPhone hardware refresh for 4G or a 24 to 32GB model, whichever comes first. Rogers is playing up that it's doing well, but on the world stage, they're a downright embarrassment when countries with smaller populations and higher poverty ratios can outsell Canada.

Anyone have any suggestions for a case to slide the phone into and that can be clipped onto your belt?
Speck makes a nice one. The clip doubles as a stand, too. Pretty sturdy, lightweight, very functional.

Has anyone tried the new $2.99 MobileChat app (AIM, Yahoo, MSN, GoogleTalk) yet?

It didn't work yesterday, but it's pretty good - better then Palringo I think though since that went to 1.1 it fixed a lot of problems.

MobileChat will be good when 2.1 as it has serverside status and pushes messages to you via Email or SMS.

The app looks great. Almost like Adium on the go, but paying any amount of money for a chat program seems so foreign. :lol

Much to my chagrin I checked with Sprint today to see when my contract is up(fu@#$ing december 09).
Tried the Instinct out = piece of shite. Worst browser interface I have seen in a while.

Anyway someone was telling me you can now buy hacked Iphones that work on any network service.
Is that true?

Worm_Buffet said:

Not true, and Apple has even said so. There are some in the works, and I believe the 2.1 update, already seeded to developers, has some hooks in the OS that will open up navigation more fully.

No. Not true. You can buy unlocked iPhones to work on other networks, but they must be GSM networks. Sprint is a CDMA network, so no iPhone will currently work on it. The only other US carrier that can use it is T-Mobile.

Talk about the SDK not allowing turn by turn navigation (because of idiots potentially driving into buildings because "The iPhone made me!") was apparently false. Apple said there was no reason the phone cant to it.

Ahhh ok. I was wondering if it was a different application process for the software or if they needed to first include the feature in the update for developers to get the apps out. Thanks.

Thanks for the quick reply....Ahhh damn sprint.

Whew, the apple store magically came up with a load of 3G docks last night so I bought a few. The nickel-and-diming sucks but it works really nicely. And to thank people from much earlier in the thread, the shure MPA works great. I like the idea of having a headphone cable that only costs $40 to replace.

The whole thing about no turn by turn directions was something taken from the Google Maps licensing agreement that said that no devs could build a turn by turn system based on the Google Maps API.
