Dammit, I still can't decide if I want to jailbreak this thing. I mean, I do...but I reeeeeally don't want to brick my brand new $300 toy and I'm not sure if a little more customizability is worth that risk.

Also, I can't find the 2.0.1 firmware direct link anywhere anyway. =/

But then you won't be able to get RickRolled like I was when installed this "surprise" theme was supposed to be super cool.

a quick question guys. on the 3g how do you check your txt messages? i see the notice when one comes and i can read it but how can i go back to see all my txt messages.

How did you get t-mobile like that on your iphone? i have t-mobile on mine but it does not look like that.

The green SMS icon in the upper left of your menu (says "Text" under the icon) should take you to all of your messages. Your messages are sorted by who you're talking to.

Haha, sorry dude, I'm on Rogers too, good luck ever getting an actual phone that's even remotely close to those numbers.

I'm sure you have Cydia right?
Search for "T-mobile" and install the T-Mobile logo utility.
Makes it look much sharper than the plain white text!

Or you can use customize and use whatever logo you like.

Well I just did unless they screw up on the backend. My only worry is that my plan online doesn't show my Unlimited Network Calling. And for some reason she didn't really ask for my student number until I told her... I think she was just going to apply regular retentions credits? Oh well, took three phone calls and I'm definitely happy with the plan. It's just gonna take me two weeks to find out as that's when they get the phones in stock and I get my next bill.

If anyone has Unlimited Network Calling on Rogers, could you please tell me if it shows up on the website under your account? I can't remember if it used to show up before my change or not. The rep wasn't supposed to touch anything on my voice plan...

Welp, didn't work, gave me an error. I think I'm going to just wait on this for a while. Seems to have restored fine to its original settings though. Phew.

It shows up on my printout from when I got the phone, but I don't think it will update on the website until my billing cycle changes. Er...oh wait, you mean unlimited rogers calls? I don't have that. But did your changes roll over immediately? Usually they need to wait on the cycle.

(edit: wow, that's a lot of credits. damn students. :lol )

Yeah Unlimited Network Calling is free calls to/from Rogers Wireless/Rogers Home/Fido. I asked if it changes in the next billing cycle or if it's going to be pro-rated. She said she added it onto my account right away but it still won't be pro-rated.

Only $5 was for student, the others are just because I said I wanted to cancel and go with Bell with their unlimited $10 internet. You just gotta call 611, say cancel, and talk to a rep. Heck you could probably wrangle at least $10 off by phoning in and saying you want to return the iPhone and cancel to go to Bell's Instinct as long as you aren't on a corporate plan >.> You're still under 30 mins of use right?

Yeah, I'm pretty worried too. Mostly because I'm not supposed to have one anyway because of where I live, so if something goes wrong, I doubt I'd get much support. Although, someone was showing off their jailbroken iphone (first gen) and all the stuff they had on there looked awesome (NES, SNES), and had me doubting whether I should try it or not.

What error did it give you? Are you using the correct firmware?

I got the latest fw (2.0.1) and used pwnage tool to create the custom firmware. I followed the steps and I alt-clicked restore to select my custom firmware. The error happened when itunes tried to read the package. "Unknown Error" if I remember correctly. There was probably an error code, but I was in a hurry, so I just clicked OK and did a normal restore. I'm assuming I can just rebuild the FW from pwnage, but, honestly, restoring my phone was a freaky process, so I'm not too eager to try it again. Poor thing has had enough for one day. :lol

Really though: What is the chance of bricking this thing during this process? And if it bricks, I'm SOL, correct?

Which phone do you have 3G or 2G? They each have their own firmware, that might be causing your error. The chance of you bricking the phone is insanely slim. You should always be able to restore to an unjailbroken firmware.

3g. I rebuilt the FW with pwnage and it looks like it might be successful this time. I'm holding my breath at this point, but it's pretty far along.

Your completely visually revamped interface has convinced me this is worth doing.

Plus, I'd walk over broken glass for a command line.

Good to hear! To change your iPhone's icons you have two options,
Winterboard: this will change the app icons, the dock and gives you the ability to add a wallpaper to your homescreen.

Customize(what I used): this will allow you to pretty much change every image on the phone as well as sounds and menu text. Both can be found in Cydia.

Thanks for the tips! I'm pretty into customizing the display and I've just cracked the surface it seems... Probably a stupid question, but what's the size of the display (if I wanted to email myself an image to use as the background)?

yeah i saw that but when i go there all the messages are gone. like if i recieve a txt message i can see it then and there but when i close the phone and go back into SMS icon i see nothing.

That doesn't sound normal to me. What happens when you create an sms? It should also be stored in the text app and show you a history of the conversation.

OF all the devices I own, the iphone fits what you say perfectly. The iPhone is what the psp should have been. I'm playing more games, watching videos, listening to music, surfing the web, emailing/chatting with friends, looking up weather, listening to internet radio, looking up movie times, directions, waaaaay more than anything I use on my psp.

The iPhone already jump started smartphones in to the mainstream public. I've never cared for nor met anyone really that were into the blackberry, blackjack, treo, whatever the smartphone like the iPhone.

You will probably get the phone earlier than the suggested arrival time they gave you. They told me i'd receive mine in 10 business days because it was sold out but i got it in 3. Ordered it on sunday and got it yesterday by UPS. I'm surprised they charged you the $35 admin fee, the csr i dealt with waived that and shipping charges without me even asking.

To be fair, those other devices are all pretty awesome, it's just that the demographic targeted by the iPhone is one that will proselytize to anyone and everyone about their wonderful toy and try to learn about all of the neat functionality.
 
So I fell in the middle on a street, I landed on my phone. Screen is fine except for a hairline scratch. Will Apple fix this?

Iphone still beats the psp. Just surfing the internet is a million times better than on the psp.
 
Question: Is there a good pair of third-party headphones for the 3G that have a microphone/iPod pauser button thing built-in like on the pack-in? My pack-ins are busted and I don't want to pay another $30 or whatever for the same piece of shit.

What enzom said, though the Apple Store seems to be carrying Shure's alternative, basically an extension cable with the mic button on the end, so you can plug your own normal headphones or earbuds in and still have the mic / play/pause functionality. Kind of a good bet if you're paranoid about the headphone cable failing.

I severley cracked the LCD on my OG iphone earlier this year and Apple said it would cost $265 to get it repaired. Of course there was no way I was paying almost what I paid for the phone in the first place to get the screen fixed, so I was content to deal with it until a price drop. Lucky for me the 3G was announced not too long after in all it's $199.99 glory!

I highly recommend the antiglare film as it will eliminate the appearance of fingerprints on the screen. it adds a slight diffusion to the screen but it's not nearly as distracting as fingerprints on glass. And it's pretty easy to put on as well. One shot, no air bubbles (well, maybe a couple that can be squeezed out).

Oh shit. I just noticed there's an SSH client that went up on the 8th of this month. This is the best news in the history of the earth.

Edit:

The client at the moment doesn't support custom ports. So that makes it mostly useless to me as 90% of my servers run on a non default port.

And sorry about the port 22 thing. A complete oversight on my part. Already fixed and in the pipeline for V1.1

I hear that Retentions, Customer Service, and all the different departments have different stock levels or something. But yeah that'd be nice. Although I'm still too afraid to touch anything until my bill comes in XD I didn't fight for the $35 admin fee. I'm okay with paying it considering I got $5 more off a month than I thought I would. I may or may not call in and try to get it waived. Probably won't.

Anyone in Vancouver been in the Apple Store at Pacific Centre and know if they carry that Power Support Anti-Glare screen protector? I hear Apple Store carries it but not sure if that one does... That's the only Apple Store in the lower mainland right?

After toying with the iphone 3g at the apple store, and doing all the research about prices, my phone will get here on Monday. I can confidently say after seeing a wallpaper and theme like this, it is 100% worth it. You've already told me the link, but where could you get themes similar to this? Hopefully its not all too difficult to set up.

Not difficult at all, dude. I'm pretty dumb when it comes to doing shit like this and all i did was follow the guides found on the internet. Pretty easy.
