My final predictions:

6/8 Release:
iPhone 3G
-The thinner, shorter black case
-Video calling
-Photo Booth app
-Shutter button
-25-50% better battery life
-Identical specs as current 3G
-4GB FREE (with contract)
-8GB $79
-Reduced monthly fee (plans starting just over $50)

7/17 Release:
Better iPhone with some brand name, hopefully "Pro".

Same as above, but:
- "Twice as fast" -- double RAM, CPU performance, 3G speed (7mbps)
- Rear camera can record 480p video
- iMovie app, editing, MobileMe uploads. YouTube uploads coming shortly after launch.
- To support development for more power hungry apps, a "Pro" profile for the App Store to devs for apps that are exclusive to the faster phone.
- 16GB for $199, 32GB for $299

I get the feeling you're going to be disappointed...

Video calling is a nice thing to hope for, but I'm really wondering if AT&T's data network is stable enough for it. I was just down in LA with some friends, and the iPhone owner among us was constantly griping about lost and/or weak 3G signals.

Thanks. I have no insider info at all. I just think the business case for that differentiation and feature set are overwhelming.

I'm very confident this time around. I look forward to scoring myself after the show :D

Heh, bummer. I haven't read his yet. I tried posting this list las night to beat him to it, but my battery died.

Edit: he's got a good write-up, and his argument that they'd wait on the cheaper line and clear out current 3G inventory makes sense. However, the global supply chain is so massive that they could easily drop the current 3G today and still sell all the inentory that they want.

I think the immediately available cheaper phone will serve a critical function in that it will prevent the utter neutering of sales for the six weeks until the iPhone Pro is ready. In fact, even knowing a better one is coming out, the price alone would probably drive record sales for the next month as most people on the fence realize they don't need the high end one.

I'd guess the name at iPhone Video not Pro but all else same here

Video doesn't make sense, because it implies that somehow the other iPhones can't play video.

They released an iPod Video almost four years ago to designate playback. It also sounds pretty played out.

I still don't see it. Most won't know a new one is coming, and they'll feel ripped off.

They'll drop the 3G price the same day the new one comes out.

video chat would be such a killer thing if it's as easy as pressing a button on a phone.

so i guess the video phone future may be upon us if this is true? :lol

It had better be. I've been waiting too long for it. If they do it, it'll be so easy and so quickly ubiquitous, that it'll take another two years for the competing handset makers to catch up.

If you're not hardcore enough to read the tech news, the high-end iPhone I described wouldn't be for you anyway,

They'll drop the 3G price the same day the new one comes out.

Charging full price for the 3G in the intervening months would be even more of a rip-off than the somewhat improved consumer model. And consumers would be even less aware of the upcoming high-end ones because of overall diminished hype.

If Apple decides to go after video calling, they're going to need to start building an install base ASAP, because the success of the feature will depend on the number of people who have access to it (which is why it should be on the consumer model at all).

Huh? Video phones are already out. I had to do training when they were coming out in... 2007 I think it was? And this is Canada where the newest cell phone technology is actually 2 years old already in other parts of the world. Rogers gives a full YEAR of video calling free and people still don't do it...

We had the G1 launch last week. Cutting edge.

I don't think anyone's arguing that this is OMG NEW for cell phones, but rather Apple's attempt to get people to use it will be the one that actually works.

Indeed. MP3 players had been around for what, 3 years, before the iPod was introduced. And the iPod Video was probably released all of 2 or 3 years after the first DAPs that could play video were available.

Video calling is a much more involved problem because of the social aspect. You need to reach a critical mass of subscribers in order for it to be of any value to anyone. That's why videophones on the market are a joke, because it isn't about the technology, it's about adoption. Only Apple would be able to push the kind of adoption necessary to develop a standard marketing speak and user experience for video calling (not to say they'll necessary develop a non-standard transport layer).

Ok. I want to run something by you guys.

Currently the speakerphone on my 3G is FUBAR'd. It doesn't work at all. When I try to use it, the call either drops or I can't hear the other party at all and the phone ends up locking up.

I'm still under the 1 yr warranty on the phone, so I'm planning on taking it to the Apple store pretty soon. What do you guys think my chances are of working out some kind of deal to get the new iPhone as a replacement instead of another 3G? This, of course is given there's no fix for my speakerphone problem.

A new model would be tempting pretty soon for me..

Only because the battery sucks so much right now. I think mine is already in the process of dying. The battery is getting drained way too fast when I am not doing much on it either.

It has died on me the last three days way too easily.

exactly.

iphone will have the elegant and inviting design that most people can instantly feel comfortable with; and if they have a mass market video phone, then it looks like apple might open that market right up.

Oh goody, so the douche-ness of people walking down the street or through the mall talking on their bluetooth headsets can be replaced by the douche-ness of people walking down the street or through the mall holding their phone out in front of them while they video chat.

I suppose, I don't really see it being something most people would feel comfortable whipping out while they're on the go, since it (unlike most other douchey technologies) actually decreases the number of things you can multi-task at once.

I'd use it a lot, but almost certainly only in a reasonably private setting. The only appropriate public use for it I could imagine are utilitarian (get shopping advice, family event, etc.)

I really do not expect to see that big of an update tomorrow. My reason is that there are far fewer 2G contracts than 3G contract. 3G contracts do not end until next year. Apple will need to "wow" us more then to keep the majority of iPhone contracts at ATT.

Also, can ATT's network even handle video calling?

And the idea of iPhone Pro app store seems like a really bad idea. Requirements in the APP store ruins the simplicity and ease of use. Plus I think it would confuse a lot of users when it says they must upgrade to a new phone in order to download an app even though they can't without paying a big fee.

Just like some apps require a an iPhone instead of an iPod Touch, there will certainly be apps designed around features that aren't available in the older phones, and Apple will just have to find a non-offensive way to educate users of the difference.

I just got a Pre and while the OS is wonderful the build quality is cheap. I'm definitely switching to the iPhone. I really hope it has a front cam for video chat and has a sleeker design. I'll return my Pre Wednesday and be first in line if it impresses me.

lol joke post right?! Why would you buy a pre two days before new iphone announcement then return it and switch providers?!

1. Because I can return it and

2. I didn't know it would feel so cheap, I credited the demo unit to being a demo unit and getting abuse. It feels good in your hand but when shut the screen creeks and "gives" during certain swiping motions, specifically on the top half of the screen and when doing the back gesture under the screen. The top layer shifts and clicks, it's super annoying. It feels too cheap for what I paid.

So I imagine we'll see the same trend as we have for previous keynotes.

Official keynote thread gets raided by people who have no interest with the products being announced, yet show up to shit on them, iPhone thread stays fairly neat and civil.

I was thinking the exact same thing.

if that thread goes to shit ("what? no free iphone? fuckers!" X 1000), I'll just start posting in here.

Indeed. I'll probably come here first because the other one will move too fast and be too obnoxious.

At first I would have rathered having no OP at all, since I like this thread being considered the Source Of Record on iPhone @ NeoGAF, but on second thought, I'd rather not have this thread so tainted as to support another keynote.

I still think a WWDC OP is a good idea as there's bound to be snow leopard news and other tidbits that wouldn't fit here.

I suspect that after a couple days, all iphone talk will migrate back to this thread anyway.

Yeah. I doubt there's going to be much sizzle in the rest of the show.

- Unibody MacBooks become Pro's, which instantly catches all the ones they've sold so far in this bizarre marketing black hole.
- Carrier 3G cards built into new MacBook Air as a BTO option
- 10 min. Snow Leopard demo with release details (I'm betting on $59 price barring a cool feature)

That would be hot, but I don't see Apple dropping this at a discounted rate. I'm really interested to see how much the OS utilizes OpenCL.

As it stands, they don't have enough to market this thing at $129. If they try, there will be a pretty major deflation of hype for it, and the risk would be that it could tarnish Mac OS X's brand as somehow not receiving the TLC that the iPhone has gotten.

Back in the 10.1 days where it looked like every-other OS release would be free, I'd have expected Snow Leopard to be a free release. But thanks to Apple's super conservative interpretation of Sarbanes-Oxley, that ain't going to happen.

Steve rips his black sweater off and starts flexing some finely ripped arms and shows off his 6-pack. "This is where I've been the last little while biotches! Rawwwrrrr!!!" :lol

Refresh my mem a bit here - 10.1 was free because the intial point-oh release was horrifically buggy. Since then all the .x releases have been $130 upgrades, right?

Correct, 10.0 was god awful.

what's that leopard/mac osx guide book for switchers/newbies that everybody always recommends?
