what's that leopard/mac osx guide book for switchers/newbies that everybody always recommends?
Eh...I don't know, but I can't imagine you'd need a book to figure out what's up.

Assuming you have internet access, I found it much more useful to just try and use the operating system and find things on my own (increases retention). Anything I couldn't figure out I'd google.

I'd say it took me about a week of standard usage to hit all the areas that I would need to know in order to not interrupt my daily activities in regards to what settings or what apps I would need.

...but none of that answers your question. I apologize :lol

I just posted this in the WWDC thread, but since it bears repeating, here's a list of all the liveblogs I've found:

Live Blog Rundown Time!

Streaming:
  • Digital Lifestyle - They claim live video (capped at 10k users, they say to get in early)
  • iPhone Alley (Apparently they had live audio stream last year)
Blogging:

Proof positive that there's a huge oversupply of people who want to make a living writing about people who do things.

I'm not staying up for this, it'll just get me angry that I can't get the new one :(

It's not fair that for me the announcement happens halfway through my work day and for others it's at 10am right when they wake up :(

Call me when you get one of these things at 3am.

Well... thanks for the apology :lol

Yeah, I usually try find things on my own but i'm trying to learn to use the keyboard shortcuts more (among other things) and a nice quick reference will help. I'd also like to examine the differences between mac os x and windows... I remember Hitokage recommending one for switchers and a couple of posters concurring but I'm having little luck finding the thread with search (the mod has a lot of posts)

for real noobies, this page from Apple is actually pretty helpful.

once you get past the learning stage and want to know how to do more complex things involving automator or applescript or whatever, you may want to go get a "missing manual" book for os x. those ten to be well received (i've never got one, though)

...so fuck yeah!

3GS wasn't exactly what I was expecting, but I think it does everything that I would have wanted anyways.

There wasn't a major feature in there that I was dying to get my hands on, but the "S" part of it has my attention. I'm curious if folks are going to be releasing apps that will require the S, or at least recommend the S for the full experience.

In phone video editing and uploading is awesome, though, and the new camera actually sounds quality as hell.

ATT would like to everyone to board the failboat:

Found in the fine print on this page:
For non-qualified customers, including existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB). Visit www.wireless.att.com for eligibility information.

Juice redeemed.

...fuck I may as well buy a new MBP for an extra 400 or so at those prices :lol

That's if you're not eligible for an upgrade. I just checked by trying to preorder a 32gig on the apple website (upgrade from my current phone) and it gave me the $299 price point.

Some good stuff today, but the lack of an iPhone-on-Verizon announcement (no, I wasn't expecting it, but I had my fingers crossed) is very disappointing.

Did you have to enter your ATT account information or anything?

I didn't get a 3G when they first came out, so I suspect I will not be in the uprade pool. Would be a deal breaker for me to upgrade if so.

Yes, I had to enter in my phone number and last 4 of my social, zip code, etc.

It retrieved my info and gave me my pricing options.

Boned. $499 to upgrade to 32GB 3GS.

No new iPhone for me this release.

...now about those new laptops...

I love how the Rogers wireless website is down. :lol

I'm pretty sure Rogers website would crash under the stiff breeze of a new HTC product announcement. :lol

Seems like 3GS is a needed improvement but really not exciting at all. Not really worth reupping for CPU+videocam+extra 500mah+compass (although, god knows I am lost the moment I step outdoors. :lol ) I really am surprised that it's the exact same shell; I guess there's no way to tell the difference apart from the label on the back and (possibly) the extra grams of weight.

I'm not sure about next year having 64GB (would have to look at the die shrink schedule) but doubling storage isn't really that important for me...still hold a ridiculous amount of TV content on mine as it is.

Mobileme stuff sounds neat, for subscribers I guess...

Unless there's a sweet deal I guess I'm waiting for next year.

sigh. If they would just go to a tablet air, I would be onboard in a second. :lol

I'm sure this has been asked a hundred times but what are some of the best covers/cases for the Iphone? I figure this is a good time to ask again since a lot of new people will be purchasing an Iphone for the first time (including me) and not want their new beauty to get all scratched up.

is the iPhone 3G available for while stocks last or will they keep this around till next year?

edit: AT&T's site is so overwhelmed it won't even show me the upgrade page :lol

I don't want to be a dick here, but video recording is one of the big reveals--and it's not available for all iPhones in the 3.0 software (just the GS)?

I had my 3G jailbroken and doing video recording months and months ago... WTF Apple?

Very underwhelming, but at least I'm saved the trouble of buying a new phone.

30fps VGA with in phone video editing and uploading on a 3MP autofocus camera vs your 10 fps VGA with no editing or uploading on a 1.3MP no focus camera.

...there's a bit of a difference there, dude.

Uh so? We already take pictures with the shitty camera we might as well take shitty videos. Like Apple themselves point out, once people have they don't seem to care that other phones or separate devices have better quality*. Nobody is going to sue Apple because their family reunion didn't look so good. It's their business decision *shrug* but I'm putting this in the negative column (same as restricting the Nike+ support)

*Video editing is another story.

:lol Seriously though, as the owner of a Lenovo ultraportable tablet...the idea of something slimmer with a decent graphics card...but tablet...damn. Holy grail right there.

So I'm assuming all 3G cases should fit the 3GS? The specs are the same, but is there anything that might mess up the case?

there's a chance that apple changed the location of sensors beside the top speaker (behind the glass). so, cases that kept only a small section of that space open might get messed up.

but that's just a guess. they might have left them the same.

Exactly. I know it isn't going to be, "the same" as the SUPER DUPER OMG SPEEEEEDY IPHONE THREE GEE ES--but the hardware is capable of doing video capture. Why doesn't apple throw the bone to 3g customers. Shit man, we've waited for 2 years for MMS--the least we can do is not have to jailbreak our phone to get a feature that new customers get.

Jailbroken video is fucking awful. Saying the hardware is "capable" is a crazy stretch.

I believe the camera on the iPhone 3G is pretty crappy - the video you get from it probably is nowhere near 'decent'.

I think the 02 pricing is pretty good to be honest, its about the same as it was yesterday for the 8 and 16gb models. I'd go for the 24 month contract at £35 a month, seems about right for my needs. Not sure if i want the same phone for 24 months though, they are typically junk and break after 9 (I am talking typical mobiles, this would be my first iPhone).

I've been with Orange for about 10 years now! Time for a change :)

Argh its now more expensive, the old 16gb iphone on the £35 contract was £155, now its £184.

i know this is a bit OT from all of today's news, but...

every time i unlock my iPhone i'm getting the "this item is over 10mb and must be hooked up to itunes to download" blah blah blah, and i can't think of where it's coming from. i'm not trying to download any app updates or anything, what else could be causing it?

thanks much for any help.

The iTunes app trying to download a podcast?

Okay, quick question. I'm a current iPhone-3G owner and I'm planning on purchasing a iPhone-3GS asap. Would my best bet be exit out of my nearly year old contract, just to start another 2 year contract for the 3GS? Or should I wait to see if AT&T will offer some kind of reduce price for current customers?

rocksolidaudio said:
ha, i'm a moron. thanks! i don't even know how it started trying to, but yay, all fixed. now all i need to do is figure how to cancel it (not just stop it)... :-)

Swipe over the title in the downloads section. Then "delete" should appear.

I only know this so well because the exact same thing happened to me ;)

I'd say wait at least a month. Everybody is complaining about it and AT&T might just cave after they've skimmed off the early adopters.
