looks like i was wrong about the "restore" vs. "update" process. it's been so long since I've manually updated the phone like that, i thought you had to pick the restore option. fair enough.

I still maintain that while 3.0 has some nice new features, most (not all) users will see the biggest gains when 3rd party apps start using the new APIs.
Pretty much. 3.0 features are window dressing until we get apps that take advantage of Apple's newfound openness.

Just pre-ordered a black 32 gig from the apple.com. I chose the standard free shipping. Will I receive my phone day 1 or will it ship that day and I will get it 2-3 days later?

I'm confused with this pre-order stuff. Is it that you can go to the store and pick it up (even though you're still not guaranteed) or is it for delivery? I'd rather pick it up.

I have 3.0. It's nice, but still needs improvement in the user experience. Useful settings (e.g. quickly toggling wifi or 3G off) are still buried deep in the Settings app. If a program calls another, exiting the called program should return you to the original; you don't need robust background support for this to occur. I don't want the Stocks app; why can't I remove/hide it? Why can't Springboard remember where and what order I've arranged my apps? These are just a few user issues that remain unresolved. I like the iPhone quite a bit, but the niggling details leave Apple vulnerable.

Thankfully, jailbreaking cures a lot of these things. And I couldn't be without the App Store. Downloading random apps is an addiction.

Do programs call another though? Apart from safari/mail, I guess I mean (those are Apple's prerogatives). It's not a huge deal, but I'd prefer if accessing those basic features were somehow an api, so it remains within the app.

I agree on being able to hide the apps you don't want, although I do find all the apple apps to be strangely simple, elegant, and jsut nice to have, even if I don't find them all that useful, so I like to keep 'em around. But as I like to limit my apps to 4 pages, they are cramping my style somewhat.

What do you mean about spring board? My apps have never moved.

From what I can tell in my limited use the past 30 minutes, I'd say you're correct. Using Spotlight is definitely going to take some getting used to.

Also, the Voice Memos icon looks super out of place to me. Almost like a 3rd party icon, not Apple.

I don't think anyone knows since they haven't done it before with previous launches. I'm assuming the 'reserving' online just gets some of the paperwork stuff out of the way so that you can just activate your phone and go when you get to the store. It doesn't sound like it will really guarantee anyone a phone on launch day. Hopefully availability won't be a problem with all high cost of upgrading from a 3G unit.

That whole app is the ugliest fucking thing I have ever seen.

You get two options when you order online with apple.com: Pick-up in person at a designated store based on your zip code, or delivery straight to your door. I chose delivery, but I'm just curious when it will arrive.

I actually didn't want to update now but since it seemed pretty easy, I did it anyway. :D I've had no problems at all. What happens if the official 3.0 Software is coming out. Do I have to update again?

The only thing that isn't working is Tethering. Dunno why, but I can't find Tethering anywhere. No problem for me since won't use it anyway. Gonna check out all the other new features now... :)

Thanks for the info on pre-ordering. I'm not sure if it'll be helpful for me or not in the situation I'm in that I won't bother getting into, but your information did make it clearer. Thanks.

In terms of having it shipped to you, I don't think anyone is 100% clear on when you'll receive it. The site states pretty explicitly that you will receive it on the 19th, but the confirmation e-mail you receive from the purchase states it ships on the 19th. I should probably call Apple and see if they can clarify, but I'm lazy. Someone else do it and post here!

Regarding the in store pick-up, you are essentially reserving a phone to purchase at your local store on the 19th starting at 8AM. That said, there is fine print that states supplies might be limited, etc. I'd rather not deal with the crowds and potential cluster fuck at the flagship store here in Chicago, so I chose to have it shipped even if it means waiting a couple more days for my new phone.

I noticed they finally updated the scrubbing in iPod mode.

Now you can change the speed at which scrubbing happens. You tap and hold the scrubber, and move your finger up or down to change the speed of scrubbing. It's awesome for when you have audiobooks or 5 hour Howard Stern shows.

My "Set Up Internet tethering" option is located under the General Preferences->Network. It tells me I have to contact Rogers though.

The new call detail feature is excellent. Nothing revolutionary, I know, but it's still nice to be able to finally see how long each call was.

I have to wait until Quickpwn for 3.0 comes out because it keeps bringing me to the activation screen no matter what method I use for updating/restoring. AT&T can't make me pay for a data plan!!!

Ugh, didn't realize you could just do update and not go through restore...now I'm waiting for all my apps and music to be synced back to my freshly restored iPhone :/

Boy, i must have flipflopped on buying this more than 5 times today. i'm currently set on buying it, but it could change again. the annoying thing is i really dont make that much phone calls and the ipod touch could serve all my needs but somehow-i cant even explain why, i really want to buy it. sigh.

This is the only thing keeping me from getting 3.0 now. Will it ignore the new 3.0 once it drops because it has it, or will it upgrade to the official 3.0 download. Are they the same thing EXACTLY?

Question: Does anyone know how to activate the "search email on server" function for Gmail on 3.0? Like, for an email I'm searching for that isn't on my phone but tucked away in my archives. Or does Gmail not support it?

Any thoughts on the above question?

Has anyone with 3.0 had any luck with searching the server for an email? No matter how many times I try I don't get the "Continue To Search On Server" option... What's happenin'?

I don't see that as an issue. I believe they're the same, however even if there is a slight change with 3.0 final, all you'll need to do is "update" again in iTunes not restore. I assume if they change it for the final release they would want all their developer iPhones to have the final so they would allow them to update it wouldn't they?

Anyone else who updated to 3.0 GM not have visual voicemail? When I click on the voicemail tab, it just dials my voicemail box...

Hopefully this is fixed when I update to the official 3.0 FW.

Visual Voicemail works fine for me on 3.0 GM.

That would happen to me sometimes on current firmware. Usually a phone restart would fix it...

Anyway, I'm just gonna update to 3.0 now. Seems fine.

Question: If I buy the no-contract iPhone, can I use it with Verizon? Or am I still stuck with ATT, just with no contract? Any option to hack it to use Verizon?

Will there be any way to buy the iPhone 3GS without a contract so I could just swap my 3G SIM card to the 3GS?
I'd love to do that to replace my iPhone 1G. My $19.99 data plan and 200 texts are top good to pass up.

3G data plans cost more ($29.99) because it's faster then Edge so you can't keep that plan anyway if you upgrade.

edit: unless you plan on having a 3GS with Edge, which makes no sense and even then I'm not sure they'd let you keep the $19.99 plan anyway.

So I found a weird bug. I was playing Nine Inch Nails and I double tapped the now playing screen to see the songs listed at the back. It gave me a list of ALL my songs on the iPod. :lol I started randomly choosing songs to play. Take a look:

Are you sure you weren't just listening to a play list or the "all songs" button?

Positive, I tried it a few times, I go to Artists-->Albums then choose an album and play a song. Then when I check the songs it shows me the entire list. It only happens on certain albums too.

I'm getting an iPhone 3GS and I'm pretty sure its the exact form factor as the 3G, no?

Does anyone have any good recommendations on 3G cases?

I deleted the offending album off my iPhone, then re-synced it. I started up the iPod and I got this screen next:

2z86e4g.jpg

The album doesn't show up in the "Albums" view but it shows up under Artists -> Albums. Weird. Still has the same issue with the playlist

Updated.

I hate how long it takes to resync apps... I'm only at B after 15 minutes.

And goddam, I hope they get a jailbreak out for this soon. Having 9 pages of apps again will SUCK.

So I know ahead of time which albums will have this issue I described above. If the album does not show up in the All albums view, then it has an issue.

For example I got to the "Albums" view and I don't see "With Teeth" under "W"...but it is under "Nine Inch Nails" when I go to Artist. When I play a song off "With Teeth" and check the tracklisting, it shows me the entire tracklisting of all songs on my iPod. Bizarre. Same shit for the "The Joshua Tree" CD. It doesn't show up in Albums view but is there under Artists-->U2.
