Crappy webapp chomped my quoting and reply.

Anyway, I was always weary about that sensor. Its sole purpose is to void liars' warranties, but I've always wondered how sensitive it was and if that would affect innocent people. It's a weird technology, treating all customers with mistrust. Very unApple-like.

I totally get the idea behind it. I've worked retail and know all too well that people try and dog the system. But they brought up a webpage that showed me what it looks like when it's been it water -- the sticker's RED. Mine was not red. It wasn't all the way white anymore, but it wasn't RED. And I felt silly trying to plead my case because while I know it's not been in water and I've babied the shit out of the phone (except for the pocket lint, apparently) the sticker's calling me a liar. :'( It was incredibly frustrating as it felt like they stopped helping me with the headphone jack the minute they looked at the sensor.

Meh, the whole "smoke in speed" argument is stupid. Anyone can throw faster processors in devices to make up for shitty software. If the software is written well and doesn't require tons of processing power you don't need the fastest processor out there. Who cares if the Pre's processor is faster? Not like Apple can't just release an iPhone with the same or faster processor inside, what does that prove?

Well, that was sort of my point. the pre was faster than the old iphone, yes, but it's not as fast as the new iphone.

before the 3gs was revealed, one of the selling points of the pre was the increased speed over the iphone 3g. it was getting talked up a lot in previews

but the 3gs matches up with the pre very well, evening the playing field and putting the focus back on the actual software. (the pre still has a great UI, mind you. i'm not knocking it)

This is Palm's last kick at the can. If the the Pre doesn't revitalize the company they're done. I can't see them cutting into the iPhone headspace though, more of going after the traditional blackberry user. My wife's company uses the Palm Treos so they would be a natural upgrade path to the Pre, I guess we'll see what happens.

I really like 3.0.
It just feels a lot more zippy and stable, especially Safari.

I think the iTalk voice memo app works better (as far as picking up sound) than the Apple app, but I'll test some more later.

There was an article about this today on ArsTechnica, about how the Pre is aimed more at the Blackberry than the iPhone. According to this article, the iPhone successfully revolutionized media devices and the Pre (or WebOS in particular) does the same for contact managment/communication.

Did everyone who pre-ordered get a confirmation email? I did everything and have an order number but didn't get an email, so not sure if I can relax or if I'm stuck in a purgatory of the iPhone 3GS reservation process that isn't "real" or confirmed until I've gotten an email.

Browsing through this thread it seems like I'm the only one who can't get OS 3.0 to install on my 3G :-/

Got the iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore file (241,229,233 bytes). Tried shift-restoring, tried shift updating. Both times it comes up with an install error when verifying the update date.

Am I special or something?

For anyone ordering the iPhone, you can get 35% cashback via Microsoft's Bing.com.

Someone at my other forum ordered the 16GB 3GS for $199. Cashback is $69.65 dropping it to $141.29

It used to be Live cashback before the namechange, maybe you've used it before.

$199 - $69.65 cashback
$299 - $104.65 cashback

There's also a huge thread on slickdeals about it for more info. I don't have a link, sorry.

I reserved one last night for myself and got an email a couple hours later. Reserved another one for my fiance and still haven't got it yet. A bit of a crapshoot on response time it seems.

i preorderd tuesday and just got the email this morning.

It says its being delivered tomorrow?!

:edit: no wait nevermind, this is for a replacement phone that i ordered the same day, wheres the email for my iphone :'(

I reserved one in an AT&T store.. Got an e-mail 2 hours after I got home.

The phone is being delivered to the store and I will have it when they open on the 19th.

I'm doing it this way since I'm a new customer and want to make sure my plan and billing process go correctly so I prefer to do it face to face.

Yeah, I would prefer to do it face to face but my account is in my brothers name to get a discount on the bill and getting it delivered takes him possibly needing to be with me to pick it up out of the equation.

I am porting my number from Sprint, I put that in when I did the reservation order but I'm sure they'll be an issue with that. I should be able to handle that on the phone anyway, and quickly with the Sprint Consumerist hotline, so no worries.

I'm still surprised they're taking this reservation route.

Ordered on day 1 and pretty quickly received an "order acknowledged" email.

At the Apple store, a reserved phone is not even guaranteed so I'm not really sure what the point is.

He ordered his online to be shipped to him.. Not at the store.

Hence why he said he would prefer the face to face route but can't since his brothers discount then wouldn't apply unless he was at the store with him and he didn't want to wait for the opportunity of his brother being free.

So.. He ordered it online which does guarantee him a phone.

The only option to guarantee yourself a phone face to face is through an AT&T store.

iTunes 8.2.0.23?

Has anybody running the 3.0 GM noticed a significant decrease in Wi-Fi reception? I felt like I was getting weaker signals on my iPhone OG, and my friend was noticing the same thing on his 3G. He has two access points in his office, and all of his devices can see both of them, including his iPhone until he installed 3.0. Running 3.0, his iPhone can't see either.

I was running on wifi all yesterday, didn't notice any difference from before. When I get home tonight I'll try walking around the house, into the basement etc to see how the signal is.

Yes, I've noticed this too. Usually in my living room I can get full bars on the wifi, but a lot of the time it's now just 1 bar from the same location. Kinda irritating.

iTunes question, anyone know of a good plugin application that will let you scrobble the played tracks to last.fm? I've tried the last.fm scrobbler but it's not very good. Just wondering if there's anything more reliable out there that works with iTunes 8.2?

A couple more 3.0 changes

in safari, holding down on a link will slide up a menu for you to copy the URL or open it in a new window. Nice

when the iPhone is connected to a line out dock and the iPod app is on, the volume slider goes away as the line out volume is fixed. Leaves more space to hit the play controls.

Yeah!! I've been waiting for the "open in new window" option.

At first I thought perhaps they just changed the percentages for what qualifies as "1 bar" "2 bars" "3 bars" but it's not that. Something is screwy.

I just ran another test and I'm convinced there is something wrong with WiFi under 3.0GM. I download podcasts directly to my iPhone OG at my desk all the time. Up until I installed 3.0GM, I was getting pretty normal speeds, and most hour long (~60MB) podcasts would download in a few minutes (5-10). I tried today under 3.0GM and the projected download time was jumping from a low of 25 minutes to a high of around 45. Something is definitely wrong.

I know how you feel. You know I still have the original iPhone, and so a few months ago, the lower section of the phone (mail, phone, iTunes, safari) stopped responding. No matter what, it would not respond to my touch. Weirder still was the fact that the slide bar to unlock (which is in the same portion of the screen) worked.

I took it to the Apple store, and the first thing he did was go right to the water sensor. Kept blowing in the hole to check. Blowing in compressed air. Never checked anything else, and then finally just gave me a new replacement. I just find it funny that they go right to the sensor, because I am sure they are hoping that is the reason, so they do not have to actually do any real troubleshooting.

I haven't tested speeds out yet but another thing I noticed is that my PS3 which is 5 feet from where I'm sitting only shows up as 2 bars for some reason. I would think in that proximity, it would be a full set of bars. Ya, I think something is off. I wonder if this is how they gain some battery life on the 3GS. Sounds like they cut the power to the antenna.

I just downloaded the latest Giant Bombcast and it finished in under a minute :\

But if they did that, why would they cut power to the antenna in the 3G and OG too? That doesn't make sense. I'm just crossing my fingers that whatever is causing it will go away with the official release, or won't affect the 3GS I'm getting next Friday.

Just preordered my 3GS for pickup at my local AT&T store. Still have the original iphone so I was eligible for discounted pricing. Can't wait to pick it up.

each fully shaded and bump mapped 3GS game will be 10 minutes long as anything longer will drain the battery completely

/negative nancy
:lol but it's true. It would be a huge step up if the 3GS manages to play SimCity and not drains its battery despite being plugged in. I'm surprised nobody here recommends those battery packs when people ask for good iPhone cases. Are they all bad?

I got a question for you guys.

I currently have a blackberry and am in one of those family plan contracts along with my parents at at&t. I was wondering if I could replace my blackberry with an iphone mid-contract? Is it possible for me to trade my blackberry in? What is the best way to go about it?

Im not really familar with how phone contracts work but I want an iphone NOW lol so any help would be appricated.

Found that out this morining.
It's my fave feature of the day as all links on the Neogaf webapp would open in the same window.

I can't imagine they would let you switch phones and carry on with the same contract.

You can check at Apple's website to find out whether you qualify for upgrade pricing yet. Your current contract on your line must be at least 20 months old to qualify. If so, you can get an iPhone 3G for $99 plus an $18 upgrade fee and the increased per-month cost for the iPhone data plan and a new 2-year contract. iPhone 3G S is $199 or $299, depending on whether you get 16GB or 32GB.

If you don't qualify for the upgrade pricing you can still swap up to the iPhone, but it will cost you dearly. $499 for the iPhone 3G or $499 and $599 for the iPhone 3G S. You will also need to accept a new 2-year contract and the normal iPhone data plan.

Just noticed you can finally EDIT CONTACTS FROM THE RECENT CALLS MENU, instead of going all the way back to contacts to find the damn person. Ive had to do this a million times, so this is a welcome, and obvious addition that should have been implemented ages ago.

3.0 got rid of so many small annoyances for me. I actually like using my phone again.

oh wow but I thought they just announced a price drop for $99, $199, and $299?

Stupid question, but At&t is not reducing the monthly data charges for the 3GS are they?

And the updated NeoGAF iPhone app is officially perfect. Posting on NeoGAF was never so easy. Can't wait to do it in landscape mode.

I just received my acknolwedgement email for my reserve/preorder/whatever you'd like to call it. I ordered last night, so it takes almost a day to get it out, but I got it and I'm a happy camper.

My black iSkin solo better get here before the 19th.

Oh crap, you're right!
Annoyed me too!

Time stamps! Wonderful!
There was a separate app for just that but I hated having it just to see how long certain calls were.

Yeah, I get it too. I just find it a bit of a shame that business' have to treat a customer as a scammer by default first. It's like when I first arrived here in the US, I noticed many shops require you to check-in your backpack as a deterrent to thieves, I suspect. Now I carry a backpack, often with a dSLR, lenses, MBP, and accessories. It's just too expensive to just leave lying at a door. This make me just not enter.

I know it's not the same situation, but I don't like being treated as a thief before I've even walked in, and its a little bit like that sensor. I wish people were simply more honest that they didn't have to resort to that. It especially sucks that the sensor is too sensitive and is triggered (by Apple's standards) by daily use.

edit: Oh, I'm wrong, apprently the icon exists inside the app, so I guess if an app goes on sale, and never updates after that, you CAN be stuck with the sale icon in iTunes.

double edit: Yup, just checked with an app that had a sale banner in my library, but no on the store. Deleted and redownloaded and banner is gone.
