I think I will wait until next week. I get paid on the 18th, so hopefully there will be plenty of stock by next Friday.

So who all's planning on picking up the 3G on Friday? Let's do a rundown of who's planning to pick up, what model and your plan of attack --

Myself: iPhone 3G 16GB black, dock connector. My plan is to mosey down to the Apple Store @ 8 a.m. Friday. If I can get the phone, cool. If not, I'll just enjoy the 2.0 software on my iPhone 2.5G. Not gonna wait for hours in a line prior to 8 a.m. though.

Apple will be selling docks for the phone (shown here at the bottom of the page) separately. I'm not sure about third-party docks or whether or not the 3G will fit in some of the speaker systems that're out.

? That dock looks like a dongle, where your phone lies flat? I was thinking like a traditional dock where you set it in like a monolith.

I want to buy one on friday. The problem, of course, is that there are two stores nearby - a Rogers shop and the only Apple Store in the downtown area - and I think they both open at 10. Plus, if supply really was cut...it looks like even Roger's rip-off plans may be hard to come by.

Still haven't decided what model to get. What reasons beyond photos/music/video are there for getting the 16GB? Games won't be that huge and I assume I'll be able to load/offload them through iTunes.

I'm thinking 8GB at the moment. And I'll be going to the AT&T store as I think there will very few people there compared to the Apple store.

It's just an overhead view. That's the same as they've always had.

Ah, okay. I guess just optical illusions getting to me then.

I really can't say I would recommend 8GB unless you are absolutely sure the space will never matter. It's not upgradeable, and if there's anything I've found with my devices these days, it's that it's far more likely for me to be using something slightly over the minimum (eg: 8.5GB). I mean, if I had bought a 360 premium I would have run out of space in no time, and I still don't really know why.

It's an overhead view of the dock. When the phone's sitting in it it'll look like a monolith.

There's no real advantage to the larger one. Just more storage. I have an 8GB model now and it's fine, but I do find myself pushing the ceiling of the storage with the amount of music/photos/video I have on the device. Add games and other apps to that equation and I need the 16GB.

I'm thinking 8GB at the moment. And I'll be going to the AT&T store as I think there will very few people there compared to the Apple store.

That's what I thought last year. However, the AT&T store location I went to then got just 20 damn phones (they wouldn't say how many they had before opening though), where the Apple Store had plenty more stock. So this year, eff AT&T.

- Arrive home from work around 2am Friday morning.
- Sleep for about 4 hours.
- Wake up around 6am.
- Leave my apartment around 6:45am.
- Walk down a couple of blocks to my local AT&T store (should arrive by 7am).
- Check if any substantial line is building (if it not will hit the next door Starbucks for a few minutes).
- Wait for store to open at 8am.
- Enter store and speak to the clerk who has already pre-set all needed details last-week for me.
- Purchase a 8GB iPhone for $200, another $50 on accessories, and sign up for AT&T's $90 data plan.
- Should arrive home no later than 9am.
- Download a few App-Store titles.
- Sleep until work at 6PM.

So any Canadians picking up the iPhone? Specifically those with Rogers on a current contract? I'd like some info on how the upgrade works if I choose to get one, and I'd rather not wait on hold for an hour to get info if someone here already has it. :lol

Has anyone read any impressions on SIM hacking the 2.0 FW? I'd love to pick this up but there is no f'in way I'm going to Sonera. And I'm moving to UK soon anyway.

I'm planning to get an 8GB model t save the $100. If I thought I'd be using the thing more than a year I would consider getting the 16GB model for future proofing myself, but in reality the better way to do that is to save $100 and put it toward the purchase of the next iPhone which will undoubtedly be released within a year.

I am going to get one! Can't wait, being iphone-less for 2 months has been a PAIN in the ASS.

Just curious, and this is probably the wrong thread to ask, but what is the iphones main competition right now? Should I even check out some other ones before signing 2 more years of my life to AT&T? :lol

ok guys. i had an iphone but i sold it after the announcements for 400 bucks. i am still on att so i don't need a new account or anything. all i need is to get the phone, extend contract, and add the data plan to my account. what do i need to bring? i just want to get in and out as fast as possible, so knowing what i need to bring would be ideal.

Me, hopefully. I'm most of the way through my first Rogers contract. It looks like we have two options:

1. Upgrade to one of the 3yr iphone plans (which are actually pretty good deals when you calculate it out, at least on the low-mid end). Basically, your old contract gets tossed for free and your new one starts with your purchase. There is a penalty fee though, if you try to downgrade the plan later. Note that if you replace your plan I think your canada-US LD per minute charge goes from 30c to 35c if it hasn't already. And I hope you haven't used your phone too much since the last billing cycle as there are some nasty pro-rating charges.

2. Stick with your current plan type, but your plan gets boosted to 3yrs again and you have to pick an addon data plan (or replacing one you have, if you have something already.)

You should be eligible for either method as long as you have spent a year on your current contract, though they are cagey on how to qualify, exactly.

That $400 would be a start. :D

Ok doesn't sound too bad, I'm 1.5 years in on my 3 year, although the prospect of renewing to another 3 year isn't all that appealing.

It looks like the best way to go is their iPhone Voice + Data packages, even though they're a ripoff. As it stands, since getting a subsidized phone renews my contract anyway, I might as well get voice + data for cheaper than my current voice + $30 for [edit: 300MB :(] of data (ugh)

Here's hoping Rogers is scrambling right now with all the bad PR in the press and gives us more bang for our buck come friday. I don't even care if they lower the price I just want more minutes/data for what we're paying.

My plan is as follows:

- Wake up around 5-5:30AM Fri

- Head out to the AT&T store at the Rim, and meet friends there at 6AM, pray the line isn't huge

- Purchase iPhone, and at least 1, possibly 2 docks.

- Sign up for basic voice/data plan, add txt messaging, and port my number over from TMobile

- Pray the porting process completes quickly as I have a phone interview at 2PM

If the AT&T store doesn't work out, we're gonna hit the nearby Apple store, and if that doesn't work, we'll start heading out towards Boerne in hopes that the smaller town will have more phones available.

You could always wait on the port. I plan to. They can assign a number for you and then you can call later on in the evening and have them port over your old number to replace the one they had assigned you.

I'm going to wait a bit. The lack of 32GB and the $15 extra per month has me hesitant. I'll hang onto my iPhone 1.0 and test out the apps and games, but I'll try and wait for the inevitable GB bump if I can.

The only plus side, really, is that your old contract gets chucked - it's 3 years as of purchase, not old+new.

Yeah, you see the quandary. It's a lot easier to just add data, and it lets you have one or two features you won't see otherwise...but $30 for less data than the lowest iPhone plan? It's crazy.

Here's hoping Rogers is scrambling right now with all the bad PR in the press and gives us more bang for our buck come friday. I don't even care if they lower the price I just want more minutes/data for what we're paying.

Yeah, it would be nice. But they may just be relying on a possible lack of supply and will just wait us out. In fact, that seems fairly likely given their business practices.

Same here...

When Jobs announced it I was all gung ho, then the details of the rate plans came out, and that wonderful taste of a new gadget soured in my mouth.

$18 upgrade fee???

$15 for 1500 txt messages (when I pay $10 now for 1500. I can understand the data plan going up because its 3G, but why the txt rates?)

Increase data plans.

Right now I pay close to $84 a month for my iphone with the 450min plan and 1500 txt messages. If I get the new iPhone, it will jump up to $96 a month. I can not justify paying almost $100 a month to get a little bit faster download speeds.

I am going to be like Superpac, and just enjoy my current phone with the new apps. I will be spending money on that on Friday.

Will I eventually get the new iPhone. I would like to, but they need to lower the rates a little.

Is the front of the white iPhone white or black? I can't find any pics on Apple.com, only side and back pics.

edit: nevermind it's black.

just the back is white or black... the front looks like every other iPhone

I'm going to wait on the 3G iphone. I'm most interested to see how the AppStore scene develops anyway, so I'll be happy enough to play around with that update come Friday.

What's the story with Rollover? If I sign up for a lower minutes plan I lose all my rollover minutes? (besides the ones that are 12 months stale)

Some hope for fellow Canadians..

Customers are not restricted just to the 4 iphone bundles that were announced & are able to select from most of our other voice & data plans. We do not have an unlimited data plan, although we are looking at potentially tweaking some of the data plan bucket sizes. More to follow.

Also, I've been reading the Rogers iPhone forums at howardforums.com, a Fido employee has been posting some nice information there about the process. THE FOLLOWING IS FOR ROGERS/FIDO IN CANADA ONLY.

1. Standard HUP policies apply for existing customers, phones will ONLY be sold in 3-year contracts, must be eligible for a 3-year contract and HUP eligible.

2. Employees get no commission on anything but data plans, so be prepared for some resistance if you're going for an iPhone sans data.

3. Visual Voicemail as of right now is only available through the iPhone voice+data plans, no confirmation as to whether you can add it to your plan later (if you have standard voice) EDIT: Wow things change fast, apparently it costs $8 to add it to any other plan, and that plan must be >= $30/mo (take this with a grain of salt for now)

4. Data plans are NOT required, nor are the iPhone specific plans. Apparently you have to sign a waiver if you buy without data.

5. If your monthly service fee is below $30 you get charged an additional $50 for the phone. If during your contract you modify your plan to be <$30 you get charged $50.

6. No rainchecks/waitlists, employees aren't allowed to buy.

Think that's about it. Good thread for information though, from the store employees anyway.

Apple has put up a page on what to bring with you and the process.

I hope they release iTunes 7.7 and the 2.0 software update on Thursday. Would be nice to be able to test out the 2.0 update on my old phone before getting everything set with the new one. Happy about the "new iPhones daily" thing so that even people who don't get one day one won't have to wait too long. Not like a console launch!

Who told you that ?

Why would Renaissance Group start undermining their entire business by selling hacked phones ?

Well Vodafone is selling the phones on no plan and so is MM.
You should just be able to put a pre pay sim card in and use it.
Why else would they be selling them.

The last launch was like that. A few days later the Apple Store had a plenty of phones available. Not waiting either. I am thinking waiting a week will be just fine.

Friday morning 7-8am I will be picking up a 16gb with O2 in the UK and binning my N95. CANT WAIT to join in.

Anyway guys can you clear up a few things.

Can I defo use my iPhone as a modem (via BlueTooth) for my laptop using the 3G dataplan?

Can I download Podcasts on the iPhone without needing to sync to my PC ? (Use this a tonne on my N95)

Exactly how I'm feeling. I'm leaning towards waiting for the 3rd Gen iPhone, and if I buy this one, I'll be locked into the contract and not eligible for a new iPhone next year. I want to see what the App Store has for us, and then I'll decide down the line if I want to wait or get this one.

There's an AT&T store and an Apple store right next to each other in downtown SF. I'm hoping one of the two will net me one on Friday AM. Planning on heading down there around 6am...but it is San Francisco, so I might be fucked!

I don't believe you can do either of these things. The modem thing was rumored but I've never seen confirmation.

My iPhone sold for £206/$405 a couple of nights ago on eBay, which was more than I expected seeing as it was 8GB and had a ding and a scratch. So now I'm plumping for the 16GB black from my local O2 store on Friday. I'm going with a friend who is also upgrading. The O2 store said they weren't getting white until a month or so later, boo!

Apple pulls iPhone from Rogers? WTF? Is this a joke site or something?! (Ah, just the Apple Stores in Canada) I didn't think they were selling them anyway.

Not a joke site but it does appear to be the case that Apple Stores in Canada (of which there are what, 6?) are not going to be selling the iPhone on Friday.

Apple's Canadian web site shows where to buy the iPhone...and it doesn't say you can at its own stores.

The iPhone launch in Canada is turning into a disaster that even Apple wants to steer away from.

Then again, they may not have to worry because Bell/Telus just pulled a bigger dumbass move today by announcing they are charging for incoming text soon.

I plan on buying one Friday morning, but I'm not getting there early. My days of lining up for things like this are over. I'm gong to stop by the closest ATT store Thursday night to get a feel for things and if they tell me to get there the next day at 6am then I'll go to the Apple store instead. If I remember correctly, last year the Apple stores all had more than enough stock to cover all the campers. Worse comes to worse I'll get the phone next week.

Apple is learning the hard way that they were better off with a smaller growth market than doing a deal with the devils that are the carriers and having people associate the iPhone with being gauged. Getting the phone cheaper with the carrier's assistance/open rape clause will definitely burn them in the long run.

From the Mossberg review:

One drawback: While you can have both personal and Exchange email accounts on the new iPhone, if you synchronize with Exchange calendars and contacts, your personal calendar and contacts are erased.

UGH. I don't like that at all.
