3am local time, and I just got up to go stand in line @ a Sacramento, CA area store. I'll let ya'll know if i get my 16GB white I'm lookin for. Good Luck to those of you iPhone hunting today too.

So a friend of mine is getting the new 3g iPhone, and she wants to sell her old 1st gen iPhone to me.
If i buy it, is it possible for me to unlock it and use my sim card, and my own, non-iPhone contract with it?
I think i remember reading somewhere that when you buy and register your iPhone 3g, it makes your original iPhone locked, and therefore unusable as a phone. Can someone clear this up for me?

Yes you'll be able to use it. Personally I recommend using iLiberty+ to unlock/activate the phone if you are using Windows

Im in line now(about 10 till 7) I'm actually out here a little earlier than planned, which may be good considering there's already about 25 people in line.

Yeah I made a good decision getting up at 6:30 to come out instead of 7. The line has doubled in the last 20 minutes!

Is this going to be another Wii launch? I was hoping to stroll into the Chicago Apple Store around 9:45 and pick up one.

Well I'm not exactly in a large market(Columbia sc) and there's a good number of people in line. Most At&t locations are opening at 8am, and you have to factor in that with new comers to AT&T it could take upwards of 15 minutes per person to get approved, set up their account
etc.....

Speaking of which I hope they take existing customers first, my transaction will take 3 minutes tops.

Just got in line at the Lenox Square Apple Store in Atlanta. There are probably 150 or so people in line in front of me. I'm estimating. The line is long but it kinda winds around and people aren't that closely packed together. Wonder how long I'll be waiting this morning.

I would hope that Apple is going to basically flood the market early with these things, since their core customers already bought one recently, Apple will want them to be able to get one while the hype is still high especially since 2.0 adds a lot of the important functionality of the new iphone.

I have an "old" one and I really want to get the new one today, but if I can't get it this weekend I can see myself not particularly caring and just sticking with the one I got til 6 months from now, when they start talking about the next iphone.

Clearly I'm trying to talk myself into not caring that I'm at work and not picking this bitch up.

My days of lining up hours before are over. I decided I'd get in line about a half hour before the store opened and if I can still get one, great. But it's not enough of an upgrade where I'd stand in line for longer than that. Besides, the supply's such that I don't have to. :)

What's the point of unlocking an iPhone?
If you:

a) Pay the cancellation fee and then use your own SIM
or
b) Unlock, keep paying your contract and use your own SIM.

Won't it end up costing as much as a prepaid iPhone anyway?

This is on the assumption that the US iPhone prices are like the Aussie prices.

Is that for certain? It would certainly put my mind at ease a bit this early morning.

Man, I tried installing that 2.0 update that's been floating around and it bricked me 3 times. I don't know what the fuck I kept doing wrong.

I'm gonna go to sleep and just wait for it to be official, but damn it, for awhile there I was totally hellbent on getting that remote thing to work tonight. I hate losing to technology. I've been beaten by a machine.

I'm guessing. I'm in the first 150 people and I'm sure they have more than 150 phones. Of course, it's not like I think supply is so awesome that I could just wait and pick one up after work. :)

I wonder if there's anyone in line this morning thinking they're going to put it up on eBay.

jerk.

I'm just hoping to get one this weekend, but I doubt it.

Quick Q: is Apple expecting to open new lines today? I assume this is the case, but I just want to be added to my boyfriends plan, thus creating a family plan. I'm confused.

Well, like last year they'll be getting shipments daily. You'll be able to check the night before on Apple's web site.

The first purchaser just walked out of the store. 15 minutes after open. Also, a guy behind me is a current non-iPhone AT&T customer. Apple Store employee told him he might not be eligible and to call AT&T of talk to the concierge once he gets to the front of the line. I wonder how much that kind of thing's gonna effect others in line here.

there are actually two apple stores within 10 miles of me in Boston so maybe I'll call to see if they are getting shipments tomorrow and head out there early tomorrow. CivRev on the DS will make the time fly

Got my iPhone this morning in the UK. Still 'No Service' <sigh> but then I am a new customer to o2.
Two things; I would have imagined initial charge to be 6-8 hours but after two it reports it's charged; should I be concerned? ( I always get paranoid over batteries and the correct amount of time to do an initial charge :-) )
I have made a ringtone that shows up in Custom list; Can I use this as a text message alert? If so, how?

It will be interesting to see how the supply holds up. I went to a bar at 10PM last night, at the AT&T store around the corner there were 20 people in line, at 10PM!!! Why?

I think after the initial rush today and possibly tomorrow, the lines will be gone and there will be a ton of iPhones sitting in stores like last time.

Why can't I download 2.0 for the Touch? :( I'm leaving to go on a trip in like a half an hour and was hoping I could get it before I left. I click on the link on apple.com and I get an error message that the iTunes Store is unavailable. WHY OH WHY.

On the east coast in the US, btw. Anyone here able to get it? Is there another way to get it that I'm stupidly missing?

Yeah I still have no service too, must be taking o2 a while, really want to try out teh 3g and GPS. Wifi is doing for now.

Just bought Monkey Ball and MotionX Poker after hearing great things

You can't use GPS without a phone signal?

Just a quick word of welcome to all the new iPhone users picking up their phones today. It's a great device, and the App Store has already made it even better. Enjoy your new toys!

Man this line is barely moving. VERY slow. Apparently the store said they have tons of 'em. Anyway, I'm uploading pictures from the line to my Flickr account. http://www.flickr.com/superpac

city under cj? very clever. that line looks pretty slow, you should have thrown SMB2 on your psp to give you something to do.

By the way, I think that sea horse is too big for you.

Has anyone played with the MLB ap yet?

I didn't even know I could get Apps for my iTouch, iTunes never mentioned it. Shame that the update to 7.7 isn't working right now. I want to add some stuff dangit!

You have to pay for the Touch update if you want to use apps.

Of the apps I've dabbled with so far, Evernote is the biggest disappointment. I'm not really sure what the thinking is behind not allowing edits to saved notes in the iPhone app.

I had never played with Pandora's service before and I'm pleasantly surprised how well it works. That's an addictive little app.

Anyone else getting lookup errors with movie.app?

Well I just got back from the ATT store in our not-so-big town without 3G service, and I am iPhoneless. Completely overestimated supply and underestimated demand. Last year our store got 80 iPhones, this year we got only 40. Could have stayed and waited for direct fulfillment, but that could be another week before they come in. The store is supposed to have a shipment Monday, so I guess I'll try again then.

The only way I know of to do this is to jailbreak it and manually replace the sound file.
I use the MGS4 codec. :)
