Apple Store employee just came out and said that they're having issues accessing existing customer accounts in iTunes. It's an AT&T problem according to them, but that means the line hasn't moved in friggin ages. :(

Ok so the 2.0 some of us downloaded is different from yesterday...

The official iPhone 2.0 Firmware is now available through iTunes 7.7. The new upgrade file carries the same build number (5A347) as yesterday's early leak:

iPhone1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw

The "1,1" designation is different, however. The significance of this difference is not entirely clear. Despite the same build numbers. the file sizes of the two builds are different. For those who are concerned, you will likely be able to crossgrade to the official release using the same technique as yesterday. We'll post details of this after some testing. The iPhone 2.0 Firmware provides a number of new features and also provides support for the iTunes App Store.

Edit: Went searching through Macrumors forums and to move from "Leaked 2.0" to "Official 2.0", you just have to restore your iPhone--again.

How many people are in your line now? Has there been any word on how many they have there? I struck out at AT&T...they only had 40.

Woke up this morning after upgrading to 2.0 and the battery is completely dead. Some app must've stayed open in the background, it was about 40% charged when I went to sleep.

A lot. 300 at least. Maybe 400. I dunno that the store's even gotten through a third of that number already, too. Though supposedly they have a lot of phones. We'll see!

After reading your post, I was considering heading to the Perimeter location.. but figured I'd save my energy (and avoid disappointment) and wait. I didn't think that this would be so big.. fail.

Yeah. And the effed up thing is I don't think they've been able to get through more than 50-75 customers at this point here at Lenox. This is a mega-debacle. Anyone else at an apple store having as bad a time as this?

Some people wanted pictures;

So here it is, the thing I waited in line for 2 hours in the cold at 7am and saw a bum get bashed for...

And on the iPhone - Monkey Ball!

Okay so I decided to wait until the official firmware 2.0 update (for a 1st gen iphone) is out, firmware loads this morning (at around 6:30), and the stupid thing hasn't been able to activate at all since then.

Been getting an SSL error when trying to activate the iphone after a firmware upgrade, no matter what I do it's just not responding at all.

Good job Apple, if your servers are swamped right now, this pretty much leaves people like me who decided to follow your guidelines to upgrading without a phone until you guys sort out what's wrong with the thing. The best part about it all is I was expecting a fairly important phonecall this morning too :lol

[edit] the Download Itunes 7.7 link at www.apple.com/itunes/download/ seems to be down too. I'm guessing their servers probably exploded from the launch this morning.

I was at an ATT store but it was pretty crappy there too. Got to the line at 7:50am, roughly 150 people on line already.

Doors opened at 8 sharp. At 8:30 I had to ask an employee that was walking the line if they had even started selling the phones since the line had moved about 5 paces! She said they had so I timed the door and in 5 minutes time ONE person was let into the store from the line. I left at 8:45...

The girl did say they had enough phones to cover the people in line so they must have had a couple hundred. I wasn't going to wait a few hours only to be told that the black 16GB ones were sold out though.

I'm sitting in line at the Apple Store in Valley Fair Mall and it's just a half hour away. The line wasn't too bad when I got here and certainly not as many people as SuperPac is witnessing. Hopefully there isn't the same debacle that he had. Hopefully the stock is plenty as I hope to walk away with a black 16 gig and a black 8 gig. At least there's free wi-fi to leach from. It sure passes the time pretty quick.

Yeah the servers are definitely messing up, installed new iTunes, then the 2.0 upgrade isn't going through, either it says the store is down or it goes back to saying 1.4 is the most recent upgrade. Oh Apple:P

The clusterfuck that is Apple/AT&T IT continues. To anyone waiting in line or whatever - know this, I just left the Apple store in Atlanta, GA (had other stuff to deal with for a MacBook Pro) and the entire process is halted right now because the activation servers necessary to complete the transaction are dead the world over.

Good job.... gooooooood job :) Gotta love that capacity planning.

Can I buy and activate this if I'm on a family plan but the plan is not under my name? It's on my dads.

You should be able to do it, but make sure you are on the account as an "authorized user" or they will turn you away. If you aren't, make sure your dad calls ATT and has you added as one before you go, or they won't be able to edit the account.

My AT&T store was a shit storm this morning. It took me 45minutes in the store to get activated. My guy was a moron. He took out a sim card from his draw, scanned it, activated it, then threw it in the garbage and told me I was good to go.

I wanted to slap him.

Anyways, I'm home now and everything is good.

I got the 16GB White.

Can I activate that online on att's website? I'm going to try now. Thanks for the tip.

They learned nothing form last year, and by many accounts, the demand this year is the same or more than last.

Dude!!!!!!!!!!!

Go buy me one, I'll give you an extra $100 on top of what you pay.
Dead serious.

In iTunes, alternately click between something in the iTunes store and your iPhone. Apparently this maintains an open session. As you keep that session open with activity you keep your place in the virtual line for re-activation of your phone after the upgrade. One user reported 10 minutes, took me less than five.

It could get ugly with server overloadedness as 8am Pacific time rolls around. Maybe I won't head out here first thing and see if I can get the new phone at my relatively not-busy AT&T store.

By the way, is 7.08 GB of available space normal for a first gen 8GB iPhone when it has been wiped?

Got this from Macrumors. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=516811&page=28

Does anyone know how cell phone number porting works? My wife has one month left on her contract at Sprint but wants to get an iPhone today. We're willing to pay the last month out but was hoping to port her number today. If that's not possible, can we port later?

goddamn. I thought at least I'd be out of here by noon. At this point it doesn't look like it. What a friggin piece of shit this launch is. Apple, I luv ya but daaaaamn. This is wasting my time. :(

they were sold out :<

they turned away like 15 people when we were waiting in line

anybody have a "yellow screen" issue like some people on macrumors are reporting? they claim it is only really noticeable when compared to a G1 iPhone.

Did you at least take the day off? Seems like a good use for a free day...... :D

Blame Apple and AT&T for trying to curb jail breaking phones... If they just left it like they did with the first launch, everyone would be home already and this thread would be filled with new 3G iPhone users gushing over its shiny back and speed.

I got mine by going to the at&t store. But, I cannot activate it through iTunes. Huge FUCK UP.

Of the apps I've dabbled with so far, Evernote is the biggest disappointment. I'm not really sure what the thinking is behind not allowing edits to saved notes in the iPhone app.

I had never played with Pandora's service before and I'm pleasantly surprised how well it works. That's an addictive little app.

Anyone else getting lookup errors with movie.app?

Yeah its hit or miss with me and movies.app. It can lock so hard I have to do a full iPhone reset. =( Update on its way I hope.

Seems like I made a good decision waiting until next weekend to get mine. This is crazy. Feel sorry for you who are having so much trouble.

I went to the AT&T store in Marina del Rey Ca and they had a line around the block at 7:45. When I was about to park a store employee told me they had already counted and they only had 100 phones and 100+ people in line so I said fuck it and came home.

I've stood in too many lines and not got shit on the first day to bother again.

Here in jolly old Blighty, my iTunes activation seems to have proceeded without a hitch but I still have no service. I was warned by the carrier that this may be the case due to so many new and upgraded accounts today...
I'm assuming it's not the fault of iTunes anyway; are you getting a specific error when trying to reg or just 'No Service' ?

itunes error -9838

So trying to get 2.0 for my touch. When I click "Buy Now" it directs me to iTunes, but I dont see where you purchase 2.0 there.

Welp looks like we've hit our first hiccup. AT&T servers are overloaded.

2 of the 3 carriers here in Australia servers collapsed as well. Don't think a Phone has ever brought so many people out.

I was prepared to come here and complain about my iPhone-3G purchase, but after reading over the shit the rest of you are dealing... I'm guessing I was kinda lucky.

AT&T-Retail Store: Downtown Detroit

- I was number 13 in line out of about 70+ potential buyers.
- 8GB iPhones were severely low in-stock, so had to purchase the black 16GB model.
- AT&T employees had no fucking clue on how to handle this shit storm.
- Took more than 25 minutes to actually sign-up for the device.
- Happy that I was able get my iPhone today (many that were anxiously waiting in line probably won't).

so anyone run into any sell out stories yet?

my friend went to 1 att store and they sold out, hes looking at other stores now, im buying his old iphone for a $100 so im hoping he grabs 1 today

Most phone providers and carriers are a bit smarter about this and tend to distribute out things a lot more to avoid the circus that is iPhone activation.

And just think - you're going through ALL THIS SHIT because they didn't want people activating phones at home!

Only sold out story I know of is at Atlanta Station in Atlanta. They weren't sold out of phones, just the 16GB version.

The other story I have relates to Lenox Mall in Atlanta where the line pretty much runs the length of the mall. While I was in having my 1G swapped out because of white spots on the screen and getting the feet on my MacBook Pro replaced I asked the store manager what he thought about the chances for the people in line. He walked outside and saw the line and said - I've probably got enough inventory to do that line TWICE.
