Yeah, it feels more like a "Facebook Contacts" app + feeds.

The facebook blog says they'll be adding more to it. I'm hoping this is just a case of "We need this thing to be available at launch. Here's what we have working now. We'll add the rest later".

The thing is, Facebook takes forever to do anything. They were supposed to launch the redesigned profile pages last month and they still haven't.

Gah when I connect its taking longer and longer with this whole iPhone Backup its doing every single time before it syncs.

How do I stop this or even just turn the backup off?

Good question, this is a pain in the ass for me too.

yeah I have no idea what its doing or where the backups are going.

The last one took forever, the good news is in the meantime just click the close X next to the back up and it will continue with the rest of the sync.

Is anybody else really disappointed with the Facebook application? Apart from being able to take photos and send them directly to Facebook, the app is actually a huge step back from the web-based version. You can't write on walls in the app, and the main page only displays status updates, rather than the whole news feed (which the web-app does display). It also doesn't have access to events. Ugh, I really hope they improve this thing.

While I am annoyed that you can no longer write on walls, I do like the fact that you can chat with any online buddies, which is something the old web app didnt do.

Yeah it almost seems more about seeing what friends are up to right now rather than full featured. I have a feeling we'll be seeing a lot of big updates for many of these apps over the next few months

You can click the X in the itunes status window during backup to stop it when it's going. the iphone sync will continue after you do that. (make sure you click the X when it says "backing up" not "syncing"... should be obvious)

So far, I have not found a way to disable back up altogether. I have no idea why it takes so damn long :(

Just had my first update notice from the App Store. How slick is that?

edit: Ny Times is now at 1.01 in case anyone is curious.

Shazam is constantly blowing my mind.

Catch a song, tells you its details and it connects to youtube so you can watch the music video.

I have voodoo magic in my pocket.

Slightly off-topic, but is MobileMe working for anyone? I try to log into me.com and it keeps telling me my password is incorrect. It's definitely the right password; i've had it reset like 5 times.

Man, my iPhone is dying for the update. Hackers, please answer my prayers :(

The eReader app is fantastic, but their servers must be getting hammered. Downloading books from my bookshelf is...problematic.

Once they get it sorted though, I should be able to buy a book in Mobile Safari, then download it in the app. Not as streamlined as the Kindle, but a whole lot cheaper.

EDIT: I was able to download all the books I purchased and once you unlock one on the phone, it automatically unlocks the rest. Badass! All they need to do is add the ability to buy the books through the app and I'm set.

it's working for me, and may i just say that while its WAY over priced, it is extremely cool and useful. Hopefully the 60 day free trail will give me sufficient fillings, but the contact\ical syncs almost make it worth it alone. If only there was a way to have a shared calendar between multiple accounts!

Did you try Midomi too?

It lets you hum or sing a song and tries to ID it.

yeah its good but doesn't get it right very much, Shazam is awesome. I cant stop IDing things, the twins credits were just on TV and I held it up to the tv it got the tune spot on then I could click on the youtube link and watch teh music video rocking along to little Rchard where I just left off :lol

Can't belive its free but guess there gonna make a tonne from iTunes commissions.

Remember, you're getting web hosting with it as well. This feature seems to be getting lost in the shuffle among all the buzz over the Push features. I'm not saying it's a fantastic deal or anything, but I'll be ditching my current $120/year web-hosting for MobileMe shortly. I'll be losing a bunch of space, but I never used the ton of space I currently have with Dreamhost.

just curious what did you use to unlock your phone?

i used iLiberty+ and ive heard nothing at all from that camp regarding a 2.0 compatable version, atleast the pwnage tool people are showing they are making progress
I used the same program.

I'll use whatever tool hits first (seems like Pwnage) so I can upgrade to 2.0. I haven't really heard anything from other groups.
I need my last.fm mobile scrobbler!

To follow up with my eReader comments, some other dumbass company is flooding the app store with public domains books at $0.99 a piece. The problem is that each book is a standalone app. How ridiculous is that?

Apple needs to cull crap like that out of the store.

Im really hoping the battery life of this gets better after a couple charges. lasted less than 5 hours today with some 3G, wifi and app store downloading.

After a extremely long restore/update process, my first gen is now upgraded. It's dumb, but I am most impressed with the Remote app. I love it! I'm gonna test out Shazam now...

iCal doesn't seem to push to my MBP when I update it from my phone. Nor do Contacts, is there something I have to download for this to work?

cant they get in legal trouble for that?

No, you can sell public domain books, the consumer is just an idiot for buying them when you can get them free from Project Guttenberg, or wherever.

I don't even care about that though, it's worth the $0.99 to get it onto the phone quickly and cheaply for most people. I just think it's stupid to wrap each book up as a separate app. It's lazy.

quadriplegicjon said:

You can still buy all those books in regular stores. That's not illegal...

Just because the content is free, that doesn't mean somebody didn't have to write the app to display it (or in the case of books, go through the trouble of printing it).

It's the opposite of lazy. It's more work. But it also translates into more $$$ for some jerk developer.

that's true, as long as you just want a small site that won't get popular, it'll do.

How exactly do you add a site to it? Do you have to use iWeb, or can you do anything. Usually I spend 2 months building a site, 1 month adding content, and another 3 of nothing before I cancel my hosting. Maybe i'd be more willing to update it if it's easy to build, even if it's a template.

Back on topic: I recommend everyone who has a mac do the free trail of MobileMe, force yourself to organize contacts (i imported from gmail and iPhone) it's real simple to edit and update in address book (even changing contact pictures automatically updates on the phone without syncing.)

iCal works the same too. Whether you are at home on your mac, at work online, or on the move on phone, you can update / add / delete events with immediate results.

I never used the equivalent on PC, but if you do I'm assuming it works the same.

edit:

That's what MobileMe does, go to me.com and follow the instructions!

No, it's definitely lazy. They wrote one simple ebook wrapper app and throw the book text in. This way Apple handles selling each book.

What irritates me is 50 crappy book apps clogging the app store screen instead of one clean app like eReader has done.

Have you done the MobileMe update and set the syncing preferences to automatic?

Yay! Turns out AT&T never turned on the new SIM. Called up customer service today and the phone's network turned on in a flash. Ta-da. :)

Anybody try using the GPS feature yet?

Does it have TTS (text to speech) and does it tell you when to turn?

The GPS is spot on; it even works well indoors. Combine it with hybrid Google Maps and it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Explain more.

Does it tell me when to turn like "Ding! Turn right/left on X street"? I don't care if the location is spot on since most GPSes are spot on any way.

I'm surprised with all the hype behind this phone that no one has done a review on youtube yet about this feature. This was supposed to be the thing that replaced your in-car GPS, no?

No it doesn't have turn by turn, this has been known since the pre-launch reviews.

Edit: and no it wasn't supposed to replace your cars GPS, I don't think it was ever billed as such.

Between detecting WiFi hotspots, tower triangulation and the GPS chip, it's probably pretty accurate.

But that will likely drop a little (mostly indoors) if you turn off the WiFi.

This is correct, but to add to that, turn by turn will come as a third party app. I believe Tom Tom is working on it.

Ok, so it sucks. I think a GPS should guide you with minimal staring on the screen for your safety.

Check out some youtube vlogs, and people were considering throwing out their Garmins for the iPhone.

Going to go buy a stand-alone GPS then.

Yes, because youtube is now the height of intelligent discussion. /rolls eyes
