so then that iphone availability thing is completely worthless on apple's website? it has never said that the stores around here are going to have stock when they open in the morning.

A number of people have posted in here already that the iPhone availability page is not accurate. At least two or three on the page that you originally posted on.

If your out of contract then those will be your prices

You can still be within contract and get those prices.

If you're new to AT&T those are your prices,
If you are an original iPhone customer and have had your iPhone for at least a year those are your prices,
If you are upgrading from some other phone and you've both been current on your bill and are over 1 year into your contract those are your prices.

I don't think that has any bearing at all. I bought an OG iPhone last September after the price drop, so I wouldn't have been eligible for the $199 if that were the case. Since the OG wasn't subsidized & attached to a contract extension, it shouldn't have had any affect on anyone's current AT&T contract.

I think this will be my case, I have used AT&T for a long time and been current on my bill, I checked on the AT&T website and I qualify for a phone upgrade, the problem is that the iPhone is not listed in the upgrade options.

A friend of mine told me that if I'm an AT&T customer, they will move my current plan to the iPhone and charged me only the difference for the data plan, that is an additional $30. to my plan.

I guess I will have to go to an AT&T store and check what are my options.

Unfortunately it does. I purchased one for my wife about 4 months ago and hers was not able to be upgraded at all. AT&T says that she hadn't gone through enough of her contract and they made the 1 year claim. I have 2 in the lab that I purchased in September and December respectively that I did get upgraded but I just assumed that was because they were corporate purchases. AT&T needs to tell the truth on that line - the 1 year is what they are saying to people that they don't upgrade.

Yes, go to an AT&T store. Don't bother going to an Apple store for the operation as contractually there are things that AT&T will approve that the Apple stores are unable to approve.

right, but that was for the opposite problem, where the site would say there was stock available when in fact there was none. i guess it cuts both ways.

I think it's generally just inaccurate in both directions, which is a bit sad, but I know for a fact that I read stores were getting re-supplies every day through the weekend. But if the lines are as long as what we've been hearing, it was going back out as fast as it was coming in, and I know stock numbers, at least last year, were not being reported to the site until the end of the day I believe.

Rang up my local Vodafone retailer this morning and they had just received 3 8gb units. Considering I am currently coming out of a contract, I went down and grabbed one.

Having much fun with it. :D

Holy shit, is this really how bad AT&T is?

excerpt of e-mail I just sent to Consumerist:
So I ported my number over on JULY 11th. My next bill cycle is AUGUST 14.

When I log on to my account, it can't display my minutes used. It just says "0." This also happens when I send a text message to "*MIN#" to find out my usage.

I just called AT&T and the first rep was completely useless and hard to understand, so I called back and was told that my usage won't show up until the next bill cycle, AUGUST 14. I asked:

"So how am I supposed to keep track of my minutes used until then to know if I go over?"
"You'll have to keep track of your usage carefully."

That's an absolutely ridiculous answer. I can't keep track of how many minutes or SMS I've used until AUGUST 14?

Does anyone else have a 3G with slightly off-center LCD screen? I noticed it in the sunlight today and now I can't unsee it, even though it's really a total non-issue.

I've noticed that my contacts list hangs up every time I try to call. It takes about 5 seconds to recognize my input--and the keyboard is real laggy when inputing text or anything.

This didn't happen before my update to 2.0. Is anyone else noticing some hangups anywhere in the phone? Its not killing me but its pretty frustrating when trying to make a quick call.
Same thing is happening here. 3G.

That's what I thought, but they couldn't do it for me. My old voice plan was $30 and when I got the iPhone they made me get the $40 voice plan. I think it might be because my old voice plan has the same minutes as the $40 one, but only cost $30 back when AT&T was AT&T and not AT&T/Cingular or whatever. That was something like 6 years ago lol. The guy at the store said that my $30 voice plan no longer existed =( =(

General iphone question:

Do any of you use Google calendar, and if so, how do you sync the two?

I use Google calendar, but I view it through the browser. Just go to http://www.google.com/calendar/m and you'll get an idea of what it'll look like on the iPhone. Syncs just fine since it's web-based.

Now if I can only delete the useless default calendar app on the phone...

yeah, that definitely makes sense, especially with 3G now.
If you're using a Mac you can add your Google Calendar to iCal and have it synced that way as well.

no mac, in general I hate Apple...but this product is too dope to let that stand in my way!

That's really a subscription though, not a two way sync. You can only change/add stuff through their web interface.

I just got off the phone with AT&T and they weren't that bad. I had them block all SMS from coming to my phone b/c I don't have and don't want their rip-off SMS plan and there's no way to stop receiving SMS from the phone. The lady at the other end was pretty nice and sympathetic about it.

But they were also unhelpful about a billing isssue I had. I usually get a 15% off my monthly plan through some business plan and the guy at AT&T store had no idea what I was talking about. When I called their customer service, the lady said that she checked on my latest bill (last month) and I was still on the plan. I asked her if it still applied to my new plan now that i've signed a contract and her answer was, "I can't tell but you can always wait till next month and see if you got the discount on your bill."

sorry to derail the thread with gmail talk...is there a way to either totally delete a calendar (not just wipe it) or make a different calendar the default? When I add an item in the quick add part on the iphone interface, it adds to a calendar i no longer use.

What are your concerns with you bill? I thought the plans were fairly straight forward and easy to understand. When I got my first gen last year I knew exactly what the bill would be before I even went to the store thanks to the plan pricing being laid out ahead of time.

My concern has little to do with the iPhone and more to do with AT&T finding a way to redden my pale ass every time I make an addition or modification to my plan :p For example, last year I ended up with a 56,000 dollar phone bill. That is not an exaggeration. And it took about 2 months to get the error resolved. I probably aged about a decade during those months.

Friday and paid for Priority shipping.

Same thing happened to me last year. I figured, "screw this, I'll cancel the order and just go buy one at the Apple Store." Unfortunately, AT&T didn't have the power to cancel the order even though it had not shipped yet, they told me I'd have to just refuse shipment.

BTW, sold my OG 8GB iPhone today for $325.

Understood! That would probably be a reason for me to question each phase as well.

I love craigs list.. :lol

http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/tor/ele/757327116.html

this guy is selling 5 iphones for $2300, I figure I can do a group buy @ $460 each so I email him about it and get this response

"ok, i will sell them to you, and i will pay the shipping charges. I will deliver from Greece"

i figure this guy is shady so i ask him for a picture with his email beside the iphone and he sends me this :lol

I really wish they sold the 3Gs with metal backs, too. I'd pay extra for that.

From what I've heard you don't really want a metal back on your phone, it screws with the reception.

The more I think about it, the less sense it makes though: Why should I prefer to deal with the people that screwed me over? Heh.

Everyone has their fetishes.

This might tickle two of them: Apple design and Dominion.

So what's the deal with friends who you talk to through ICQ? Can you run ICQ or Trillian on the iPhone?

No, ICQ or Trillian are not yet available. Currently the only messaging app available via the App Store is AIM (though the Facebook app has chat too). Via Safari you can try Google Talk, Meebo or Beejive (which is just AIM, so you may just want to use the official app instead).

None of these works in the background, so the application has to be active for you to receive messages.

With nothing but 3G turned on, I got 2hr 8min of Safari browsing and AIM, so I swapped the phone for a new one at Apple Fifth Ave tonight.

Hoping this new battery is better. We'll see.

I'm very displeased. There isn't an Apple Store within 150 miles (closest is 170mi) from my town. The two ATT stores here are sold out and won't say when they are getting more 3G iPhone. WTF WTF they want me to pay upfront and they will get my iPhone within 7-21 days.

WTF?

I may just have to drive the distance to the Apple Store to pick one up. This is really just beyond.

I really don't see what's so beyond for your situation. Popular shit sells out. People are still looking for Wiis two years later.

Do you have Push or your email being checked every 15 minutes? If so that's going to fuck your battery hard. I turned off Push and manually check my email and my battery life is better than on my 2G. I never get any really important email so I don't need it to constantly check.

Just curious if anyone's got any info on how much data they've used so far. Granted it's "toy time," so it'll be heavier than typical, but I'm just curious (curious how full of shit Rogers is in Canada, although they fixed their bad plans... until the end of August)... it would be interesting to know how often you use Wifi as well.

The 2hr 8min was with only 3G on.

Push off, WiFi off, location services off, bluetooth off, brightness medium, auto-brightness off.

7.9M up, 126M down.

I used about 100M on the weekend I got it, just browsing the 'net and Youtube and downloading apps and going craaaazy! I've been using it more reasonably since then, just checking and sending mail, reading newsfeeds, and following the occasional link. I'm guessing I'll burn through about 250M a month given normal patterns of usage.

I've got wifi at home, but I haven't used it otherwise. It's fun seeing all the networks appear on the thing as I'm walking around though, heh.

Yeah, sounds like you got a bum unit, I hope this one works better for you. Make sure you do a couple full charge/full discharge cycles on the new one!
