I thought the back-up speed increase was actually due to iTunes 8. Seriously, after iTunes 8 install, each backup went from an hour to 30 seconds.

Make sure you're not plugged into a shitty hub.

Was this update supposed to add the whole push notification thing for apps? Or has that been delayed? Can't wait to use AIM for realz.

delayed. probably will show up in 2.1.x in a month or two (it was removed from beta 4 of 2.1)

iphone is updating now. I hope I can finally use this thing without fearing for crashes if I install an app or a dead battery before i get home.

Is it safe to delete the old update ipsw files that iTunes keeps for older versions? I've now got 2.0, 2.0.1, 2.0.2, and 2.1, all ~250MB each, and I can't see myself needing the old ones again.
Delete away!

They're all still available online if you need them anyway.
I'd keep the newest two.

Yes, unless you want to downgrade firmware later.

I've noticed no difference in backup speed from iTunes 8 myself. I just know that after the intial week or two of 2.0, it gradually got faster, but it would slow down for the first few backups after an app was added or updated.

I've yet to try backup speed for firmware 2.1

And whoever mentioned the formatting for Australian phone numbers, yeah that's quite a lot better than before. The only complaint I have for it is when you dial a number without area code it shows up like "9 8765 432" instead of "9876 5432". It seemed they designed it to detect mobiles and landlines WITH area code, which is not too smart since you're usually not dialling the area code.

But that's just nitpicking. :)

For the dude who was complaining about not being able to choose 12 hour time format if you choose certain region settings - UK, Japan, etc, rejoice! it's been fixed! It still defaults to 24 hour format for those regions, but now you can switch to 12 hour format.

Is there anyway to set a picture as a wallpaper but have it show up when you are in the main screen? (right now it only shows the picture when i turn on the phone)

*iphone 3g 2.1

Updating 7 apps at once direct from iPhone over Wi-Fi. 2.0 used to choke on 1-2 apps at once, but this appears to be performing much better, even with so many apps updating. Still some periodical pauses and things though. Now just waiting for Aurora Feint to finish updating.

The Genius icon is telling me that I need to activate it in iTunes. I did however and then did a sync afterward but it still tells me that. Am I ignoring a step?

No, that's perpetually black on non-jailbroken phones.
Currently I'm not using any kind of theme, but I did remove the ugly gray dock.

Dang, this update sounds great.
I hope the JB version comes out quickly!

Try creating a Genius playlist in iTunes, then sync your iPhone again. You may need to include the test playlist you just created in to sync to the iPhone. Some people have been having success that way here.

Awesome. I deleted all but 2.0.2 and 2.1 and nothing has exploded yet, so it seems fine.

Just finished installing and it's taking longer than usual to do a backup, though :/ I'll give it the benefit of the doubt for now and assume that it does one full backup and then only does incremental ones to save time or something.

I think it looks better with the metal dock background. But a background to the springboard is so much better than the drab black, I don't understand why they don't let us do it. The wallpaper isn't all that great when you can only see it on the lock screen or in a phone call.

Oh, and I don't know if this is any indication of the touted "improved battery performance", but I've been playing with the phone every since it was updated and the battery indicator is still full. Need more time to find out, but I hope it is indicative of the improvements.

Saw this on mac rumors, can anybody test this? I keep thinking about getting a iPhone but worried about dropped calls.

If you do this test, post your negative # and city and state.

3G Strength - The Real Test

For an accurate test of your 3G signal strength, and to see if the 2.1 update really does someting, other than just bump the bars up visually, put your iPhone into "Field Test Mode" prior to the update and then after the update. Example:

To do so, go to the number pad and type *3001#12345#* hit send.
Look at the numeric indicator next to your carrier logo in the upper left of the screen. The lower the number, the weaker the signal. Keep in mind that all numbers are actually - negative. The closer to 0 the better the signal. This is resulted from the carrier, not from Apple.

-75 gives all 5 bars of strength. Call quality is perfect.
-105 no bars, just barely hanging on to 3G. Call quality is sub par.

to exit field test mode, just hit your home button. Ther are a slew of other things in this mode that you can see, but unless you are a UMTS technician, most of it will be gibberish to you. This will really tell you what is going on behind the scenes of the signal bar.

You HAVE to type it. Making it a link or a contact and hitting that won't do it.

I did add it as a contact, so that when I'm done typing it I can see the name pop up at the top and I know I got it right. Having it in contacts helps confirm it for me that I did it right, but I have to type it. Clicking it in contacts does nothing.

I haven't updated, so with 2.0.2 the number is -79. (Bedford, Texas, just outside DFW airport)
I also already have full bars with 3G here though.

Posting this so I remember and check after I do the update and I'm back in my office.

another nice touch. the scrubbing bar in itunes is now longer as the repeat and shuffle controls are now on the second line with the genius button.

my control within the scrub bar seems to be in 2 minute increments for podcasts. better than before where i couldn't navigate within 4 or 5 minute chunks.

and the speaker does seem louder.

ipod app loads up way faster than before. playlists also load up faster but there is still a delay when bringing it up.

I haven't noticed any keyboard lag in Mail but that would always show up after several days of use so i can't say it's been resolved yet.

small UI change: when looking at album listing in ipod, the font for the album title is significantly larger than before, matching the size of names in the artists listing.

edit: HOLY SHIAT. loading apps online is fast, fast, fast. That apple ad is no longer "lying" about the speed of app installation. wow.

At home on the edge of town (right on the edge of O2's 3G zone on the website) my 3G reception went from one bar to variable between 2-4. I put it into field test mode and it said -105, but that's currently giving me three bars and I can make and receive calls just fine. I didn't do it on 2.0.2 so I can't compare there.

But yay, I can finally have a 12-hour clock!

Also contacts is sooo much faster.

Another thing I've noticed is that it's a lot more responsive when you wake it up and do that swipe to unlock. Unless I did it slowly the slider would jump to about halfway along and unlock rather than following my thumb. Works properly now.

I need advice.

I have a Moto Q through Alltel which is paid for by my company. I am going to buy a touch or an iPhone. Obviously, I really don't have a use for the "phone" part of the iPhone, so it's really for the data plan. I'd like to know if anyone could tell me their total bill per month that has the lowest minutes plan. I see that it runs about $60-70 per month, but I'd like to know what it comes to after hidden fees/taxes. Also, feel free to try to convince me that a touch is good enough. Thanks!

Bleh, it keeps telling me that Genius is unavailable for the song I've chosen and to try updating Genius. I do that and nothing. Does it only work on iTunes bought music?

Scrolling while a page is loading in Safari is a lot more responsive, not pausing and shit like 2.0.

I think this was how it was pre-2.0, though I don't remember anymore.

First Gen iPhone here. Love it. Monthly fee is roughly $70 with fees and taxes. Probably be closer to $80 with the 3G.

That said, why pay $80 a month for a phone that you don't need? The Touch does just about everything the iPhone does, and WiFi is pretty prevalent these days. If you were in the market for a phone, I'd say, by all means get the iPhone. Great device. But since your company already pays the bill on your phone, don't incur any more of a bill, and just get a Touch. You'll love it.

That or the meta data has to be identical I think.

No, it doesn't have to be purchased through iTunes. Some songs just don't seem to be in their database, and they are likely one that are not found on iTunes. As I mentioned a few days back, I can't get a Genius playlist from songs on either of the two Eagles Greatest Hits albums, two of the biggest albums of all time. The Eagles aren't in the iTunes Store.

Thanks, man. I know I'm being pretty irrational, but I haven't bought a new gadget in a while and i've got the itch something fierce. I suppose the better question is Where the hell can I find a new touch??!!! I'm getting ansty as hell!

Apple's Texas Hold Em still takes forever to install. All the rest of my apps were lightning fast.

Strange.
Doesn't that game have a lot of full motion video? If so, then there is your answer.

Safari survived the September US boxarts thread and stayed responsive. Now I can browse with a reasonable amount of images without fearing crashes as much.

So awesome.

Thought I'd mention this:

Apps from Pangea Software are on sale on the App Store.

Enigmo - $4.99

Cool puzzle game that was lauded by critics.
You're directing the flow of different kinds of liquids (water, oil, lava) to fill up a container.

Cro-Mag Rally - $1.99

Kart racer that isn't great, but hey, 2 bucks!
This was 9.99 when the store launched and lowered a little bit some time ago.

Billy Frontier - $3.99

Don't know much about this game, looks like a shooter with wacky sci-fi style.

Pangea VR-Pro - $14.99

For viewing 360 degree pana pictures. There is a free version, this one just lets you save pics on the phone.

Ill ask again- does anyone knows if this update breaks the unlock on a 2.0 jailbroken phone? I dont care if my phone becomes un-jailbroken, as long as I keep my unlock.

If you got it unlocked the legit way, there's no reason it would break it. If you unlicked it through hacks, then yes it will likely break, especially since iTunes 8 checks for pwned IPSWs.

What the hell does 'legit way' mean? I used the pwnge tool to unlock it. I'm asking because IPSW updates sometimes dont alter the baseband, so in that case it wouldnt affect the unlock. I havent found a confirmation to this yet.

It will stay unlocked, but it will not be activated. Wait until the pwnage team releases a new version before you update.

what does backup actually "backup"?

Is it taking a complete image of the iphone so I don't need to move my shit over again?
I guess it's like backing up your entire user folder in OS X, so all your data and settings will be backed up. But it won't do music, apps and synced photos - those will be resynced instead.

Carriers in some countries let you unlock the iPhone. They pass on info on the phone to be unlocked to Apple and it becomes unlocked on the next sync in iTunes, I presume when it searches for updated carrier info.

Noticing the performance improvements as well. From what I can tell, the apps don't necessarily open faster, but no longer have noticeable lag for things such as keyboard input. Safari only crashed once. The 3G speeds are also considerably closer now to what I had in Japan than before. The earlier phone might as well have just been Edge only; I thought the speeds were that bad.

Performance *seems* to be increased.

I started up a game. exited as soon as it loaded. then started a podcast then went to sms and the keyboard wasnt laggy.

I actually kinda dig the new Edge logo.
But what the hell did they do to the podcast section of iPod?
They're like twice the size they used to be! UGLY!

I can confirm it won't break the unlock, at least not when updating from 2.0.2. I updated via iTunes 8 and while Cydia is gone (so I guess it's un-jailbroken), the phone is still unlocked.

I'm liking this update. Everything feels really quick again.

Nice!
There is finally a color for apps on the space bar in iTunes!

How did you get your phone unlocked? I thought Pwnage Tools had not released the unlock app yet? (only the jailbreak)
*unless you are talking about the First Gen phone.

I hope it fixes keyboard lag in the browser. I can't wait to see the contact list. It used to lag horribly on 2.0.2. Sadly no mention of new GPS features and I guess they did remove Push entirely :(

The song doesn't have to be bought from iTunes but I think the iTunes store has to have data on that song/band.

Yeah I am talking about the first gen phone. :)

So I just got Mocha VNC configured.
In the system prefs screensharing pane, I made password to connect.

Is this secure enough?

Can you tell me what carrier you're with?

Also, jailbroken ipod touch 2.1 is out, not the iphone version.
