Yes, unless you want to downgrade firmware later.NekoFever said:Is it safe to delete the old update ipsw files that iTunes keeps for older versions? I've now got 2.0, 2.0.1, 2.0.2, and 2.1, all ~250MB each, and I can't see myself needing the old ones again.
I've noticed no difference in backup speed from iTunes 8 myself. I just know that after the intial week or two of 2.0, it gradually got faster, but it would slow down for the first few backups after an app was added or updated.Juice said:I thought the back-up speed increase was actually due to iTunes 8. Seriously, after iTunes 8 install, each backup went from an hour to 30 seconds.
Make sure you're not plugged into a shitty hub.
No, that's perpetually black on non-jailbroken phones.Nutter said:Is there anyway to set a picture as a wallpaper but have it show up when you are in the main screen? (right now it only shows the picture when i turn on the phone)

Try creating a Genius playlist in iTunes, then sync your iPhone again. You may need to include the test playlist you just created in to sync to the iPhone. Some people have been having success that way here.Marty Chinn said:The Genius icon is telling me that I need to activate it in iTunes. I did however and then did a sync afterward but it still tells me that. Am I ignoring a step?

They're all still available online if you need them anyway.
I'd keep the newest two.
Awesome. I deleted all but 2.0.2 and 2.1 and nothing has exploded yet, so it seems fine.hirokazu said:Yes, unless you want to downgrade firmware later.
I think it looks better with the metal dock background. But a background to the springboard is so much better than the drab black, I don't understand why they don't let us do it. The wallpaper isn't all that great when you can only see it on the lock screen or in a phone call.dallow_bg said:No, that's perpetually black on non-jailbroken phones.
Currently I'm not using any kind of theme, but I did remove the ugly gray dock.

Dang, this update sounds great.
I hope the JB version comes out quickly!
3G Strength - The Real Test
For an accurate test of your 3G signal strength, and to see if the 2.1 update really does someting, other than just bump the bars up visually, put your iPhone into "Field Test Mode" prior to the update and then after the update. Example:
To do so, go to the number pad and type *3001#12345#* hit send.
Look at the numeric indicator next to your carrier logo in the upper left of the screen. The lower the number, the weaker the signal. Keep in mind that all numbers are actually - negative. The closer to 0 the better the signal. This is resulted from the carrier, not from Apple.
-75 gives all 5 bars of strength. Call quality is perfect.
-105 no bars, just barely hanging on to 3G. Call quality is sub par.
to exit field test mode, just hit your home button. Ther are a slew of other things in this mode that you can see, but unless you are a UMTS technician, most of it will be gibberish to you. This will really tell you what is going on behind the scenes of the signal bar.

I did add it as a contact, so that when I'm done typing it I can see the name pop up at the top and I know I got it right. Having it in contacts helps confirm it for me that I did it right, but I have to type it. Clicking it in contacts does nothing.
I haven't updated, so with 2.0.2 the number is -79. (Bedford, Texas, just outside DFW airport)-xBerserker- said:Saw this on mac rumors, can anybody test this? I keep thinking about getting a iPhone but worried about dropped calls.
If you do this test, post your negative # and city and state.

I have a Moto Q through Alltel which is paid for by my company. I am going to buy a touch or an iPhone. Obviously, I really don't have a use for the "phone" part of the iPhone, so it's really for the data plan. I'd like to know if anyone could tell me their total bill per month that has the lowest minutes plan. I see that it runs about $60-70 per month, but I'd like to know what it comes to after hidden fees/taxes. Also, feel free to try to convince me that a touch is good enough. Thanks!

Kung Fu Jedi said:First Gen iPhone here. Love it. Monthly fee is roughly $70 with fees and taxes. Probably be closer to $80 with the 3G.
That said, why pay $80 a month for a phone that you don't need? The Touch does just about everything the iPhone does, and WiFi is pretty prevalent these days. If you were in the market for a phone, I'd say, by all means get the iPhone. Great device. But since your company already pays the bill on your phone, don't incur any more of a bill, and just get a Touch. You'll love it.
Doesn't that game have a lot of full motion video? If so, then there is your answer.Costanza said:Apple's Texas Hold Em still takes forever to install. All the rest of my apps were lightning fast.
Strange.
I guess, but Aurora Feint was the same size and that one went pretty quickly.ckohler said:Doesn't that game have a lot of full motion video? If so, then there is your answer.
If you got it unlocked the legit way, there's no reason it would break it. If you unlicked it through hacks, then yes it will likely break, especially since iTunes 8 checks for pwned IPSWs.Slurpy said:Ill ask again- does anyone knows if this update breaks the unlock on a 2.0 jailbroken phone? It will stay unlocked, but it will not be activated. Wait until the pwnage team releases a new version before you update.Slurpy said:Ill ask again- does anyone knows if this update breaks the unlock on a 2.0 jailbroken phone? I guess it's like backing up your entire user folder in OS X, so all your data and settings will be backed up. But it won't do music, apps and synced photos - those will be resynced instead.rkenshin said:what does backup actually "backup"?
Is it taking a complete image of the iphone so I don't need to move my shit over again?
Carriers in some countries let you unlock the iPhone. They pass on info on the phone to be unlocked to Apple and it becomes unlocked on the next sync in iTunes, I presume when it searches for updated carrier info.Slurpy said:What the hell does 'legit way' mean? I used the pwnge tool to unlock it. I'm asking because IPSW updates sometimes dont alter the baseband, so in that case it wouldnt affect the unlock. I havent found a confirmation to this yet.
I can confirm it won't break the unlock, at least not when updating from 2.0.2. I updated via iTunes 8 and while Cydia is gone (so I guess it's un-jailbroken), the phone is still unlocked.Slurpy said:Ill ask again- does anyone knows if this update breaks the unlock on a 2.0 jailbroken phone? How did you get your phone unlocked? I thought Pwnage Tools had not released the unlock app yet? I'm liking this update. Everything feels really quick again.
The song doesn't have to be bought from iTunes but I think the iTunes store has to have data on that song/band.Marty Chinn said:Bleh, it keeps telling me that Genius is unavailable for the song I've chosen and to try updating Genius. I do that and nothing. Does it only work on iTunes bought music?
Yeah I am talking about the first gen phone.Nutter said:How did you get your phone unlocked? I thought Pwnage Tools had not released the unlock app yet? (only the jailbreak)
