Fun fact: I use Adium for MSN on my Mac, and never enabled the feature to block messages from people not in my contact list. Never had to.
Within 2 days of registering with Palringo and inputting my MSN account details? I had to use Adium's privacy settings because I was getting MSN spam every 5 minutes.

So yeah, Palringo fails miserably.
Weird. I've never got that on Windows Live Messenger. I use Palringo if I have to get on and talk to someone on MSN, but I've linked my cell number with MSN so if someone sends me an offline message, I get it as an SMS. If I reply to the text, I just use up 1 out of the 125 texts I have per month and they get the message in their MSN window.

BeeJive is $16.99 so I'm not buying it >_>

I knew there was a catch.

On the plus side, MobileChat is getting its 3.1 upgrade in the next few days, and with most of the IM services functioning again, it looks like they might be the best pony to bet on.

So, for those not paying attention, here's the iPhone IM client rundown:

Palringo: Major information security issues that they pretend don't exist
IM+: Semi-broken and 100% fugly
MobileChat: totally fucking broken for a month, improving ever so slowly
BeeJive: $16 DOLLARS
AIM: Less features, less IM protocol support, NOT broken, NOT pricey, NOT invading my privacy

If only I used AIM.

EDIT: Never mind about the MobileChat update, the 3.1 update was rejected for the 3rd time in a row. Dammit. And thanks to rejection letters being part of the NDA now, they can't even tell us WHY. Looks like it's another 2 week wait for a decent IM app.

My cat decided to eat through another pair of headphones this morning so I don't have anything for my 3G iPhone. I just pulled them out of the box last night so I could listen to some music before bed. Anyone have good recommendations? Any early reviews on the new headphones that will be released from Apple?

I'd recommend you throw your cat at the nearest wall.

Oh AIM's broken all right. I can't get it to stay open on my phone -- it's constantly crashing. I'll launch it, leave it open while I put the phone to sleep, then I'll get a message, I'll turn on my phone to take a look and when I click on the message...crash. Even if I try to do something simple like delete the message from the AOL system that I'm logged in in two places. This is after multiple uninstall/reinstalls and powering my phone on/off. The thing's busted.

I see PhoneSaber has returned in its officially licensed form. It's now Lightsaber Unleashed and ties in with The Force Unleashed. It plugs the game every time you start it now, the Lightsaber colours all correspond to a character from the game, and you can get it to play Star Wars music when you're swinging it around.

Pretty cool, but I've backed up the old version because it's not quite as obnoxious with the branding. Still free, at least.

Anyone else been digging Aurora Fient http://aurorafeint.com/ ?

Best puzzle game so far and it has some nice RPG elements to keep you playing beyond the sheer addictiveness of the gameplay. They also plan to expand it and make it into the iphones 1st MMO...

Electrical/heat concern I think...apparently you can just walk into an Apple store for a redesigned plug though.

If you're charging via PC then it's a non-issue since only the plug seems to be at fault.

Quick clarification. You won't be able to walk into an apple store and get a replacement till around October 10. you can send away for a replacement from the web starting now, though.

And I heard that the prongs on the plug were breaking off into the wall outlet. yeah.... not good.

I always thought this was really silly.

But I just downloaded it...

And I'm almost ashamed to say I kinda like it :(

alright so im not that well versed in cell phones so go easy one me if my questions are dumb:

1) GPS on iphone is free right? im just asking b/c i think ive heard that other phones, you need a subscription or something like that

2) You can obviously set your own ringtone and wallpaper for free right?

3) Can I sign up for a three person family plan, with one being an iphone and the other 2 being regular cell phones as a new customer to AT&T? so the the bill would be like $100 for the family plan and like $30 for the data plan?

4) any big flaws i should be aware about with the iphone 3G?

thanks for any answers

--Well, it's part of the data plan, but yes.

2) You can obviously set your own ringtone and wallpaper for free right?
--Wallpaper is free. Ringtones are free if you have the newest version of Garage Band. Otherwise you can hack them, but it's a pain in the ass.

--Yes, that's what I'm on. My mom dad sister and I are all on the same plan, plus $30 extra for my data plan.

4) any big flaws i should be aware about with the iphone 3G?
--This varies from user to user. I'm bummed I can't send picture texts but honestly I don't really care THAT much.
thanks for any answers

Get iRinger, it's really awesome to make free ringtones. (Import MP3s, choose your 30sec melody, export to iTunes. simple as that)

Also, I notice that my apps "reset" a lot to the main menu (big webpage, big document, etc...) and it's quite annoying. Is there any way to "clear the memory" so that it can be more stable?

Fresh restart is usually the antidote.

You can do the whole ringtone thing in iTunes too (albeit with some work). Pick a song, set the start and stop points you want as a ringtone, convert it to AAC (right click in iTunes), go find the file in your iTunes music folder, move it elsewhere, rename the extension from .m4a to .m4r, double click, voila, ringtone. And don't forget to take the start/stop times off your song, as I typically do =P

Is their an os x version of iRinger or something close to it.

garageband. drag in any song, drag the yellow selection loop over the part you want, go to the menu and select "export to itunes as ringtone".

more details are available in the help manual.

holy shit just realized there was Pandora on the app store, well. My iPhone just went from sometimes use, to always fucking use.

I have to use my old plug I got with my 3G this weekend since I will be out of town and not by a PC, and I have not had a chance to go to the apple store this week. Will I die in a fiery hotel accident?

Almost certainly
Just be careful when removing the plug from the outlets, as the problem is the prongs remaining in the outlet.

Thanks.

Nice knowing you guys. I will be sure to post here asking for advice on how to put out my flaming clothes as long as mobile safari plays nice with GAF TEXTAREA.

Does anyone know where I can get the "Activated" sound from Portal so I can replace that with the current unlock sound?

Someone's got to know!

ProTip: Use two fingers to scroll within textareas!

I was really frustrated with forms on Mobile Safari until I stumbled upon this piece of knowledge.

Is Pandora still being shut down soon?

It isn't so much being shut down as they can't afford to pay the new royalty rates for streaming music so they can't afford to be in the business anymore.

Anyone else tried Line Rider? I bought it because it was pretty cheap (£1.79 on the UK store) and was being promoted on the front of the store and it's pretty good fun. It works similarly to the website, and even has all the YouTube-style functionality where you can upload your levels that you made on the phone, download others, rate them, etc.

I'm struggling to create anything of note, but some of the highly rated phone-made levels that I've downloaded are insane :lol

Is anybody else's Texas Hold'em keep crashing on them as well. I am playing the game and all of a sudden it freezes and brings me back to my home screen.

Maybe they'll add it to the iPhone soon too. But it was a feature they talked openly about on the G1. I can't imagine that it would be hard to implement on the iPhone if it's working in Android, but we'll have to wait to see. Personally, it's not a feature that I care that much about to begin with.

The GMail mobile app I installed onto my new Blackberry 8330 (I'm not a fan of these touch screen phones at the moment) pushes my GMail wonderfully so I was shocked when I heard that the iPhone doesn't support this.

Correct me if I'm wrong since I don't own this phone, but I looked at Google's page for this app, and this is what it says:

On BlackBerry devices, the Gmail application will also run in the background, checking for new mail about every 20 minutes.
This is not push. It's just the same old "check every X minutes" mail everyone else has. Push is what Microsoft Exchange does for business e-mail accounts where an Exchange server forcefully sends mail right to every device you have, right when it happens, all the time, or if you update your calendar or contacts and the changes are immediately made to every device you have, right when it happens, all the time.

Probably why there is a delay difference from the built in Blackberry email app then. I've noticed my GMail app will light up around 10-15 min AFTER the Blackberry delivery which I also have my GMail attached to.

Makes sense now.

Sorry, a little confusion on my part. As I said, I'm new to it. ;)

The Blackberry's push is awesome stuff I just wish it had better HTML handling. Although this is fixed in the newer firmware, Verizon has been dragging its feet in releasing it.

Okay, I want to jailbreak my iPhone 3G.

All I want is Winterboard and Super Mario.

Can someone point me to a good guide on how to go about doing this and what risks do I have to worry about?

Use Quickpwn. http://blog.iphone-dev.org/. There are versions for windows and osx. Just follow the on screen steps for quickpwn it is really simple.

No real risks, if you mess something up you can just restore to an unjailbroken firmware.
