OK quick question....

1) my library is on a MyBook external HDD.
2) I just got a new PC and authorized it in iTunes.

How do I get iTunes to recognize my music?
On your old computer, go to File -> Library -> Export to generate your library XML file. Then on your new computer, File -> Library -> Import Playlist and pick the Library.xml file. If the folder structure is exactly the same, everything should import cleanly.

So cool. Thanks!

Do I need to be connected to the ext HDD library when I do it?

Do you think the drive letters have to match. Its the H: drive on my original laptop and J: on my new one.

Well, yamipod ended up working. Got my iPod music into my iTunes library, all ready to go when I get my iPod Touch. I didn't transfer any videos because not only do I not have enough space on my computer, I also don't really plan on watching films on the Touch. I think I'm going to keep the iPod Video so I'll just use that.

Thanks again Liu Kang.

Well you can edit the XML file in any basic text editor, so you can do a mass Find + Replace and change H: to J: before you import.

I don't think the new computer has to be connected to the hard drive when you import the library. You'll just have the "!" next to every file until you connect it.

Edit: Here's Apple's support page for export/import in case you might need it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451

You could use Simplify Media, which will stream your iTunes library to the iPhone. I only have an 8GB, but I don't sweat it since I can always access a song I don't have on me.

Oh snap. Looks like I may be getting an iPhone for Christmas after all. For anyone who has this, how well does it work? How long does it take for a song to stream after you click on it? Does it skip often/at all?

Takes mine about 10-15 seconds to load over 3G. No skipping. Simplify Media is mandatory with a 30GB+ library like I have

After playing with my girlfriend's iPhone I've been forced to buy my own. It'll be here on Tuesday. Is there a site that has info on jailbreaking (or whatever it's called)? I think the app store has everything I need but if there's a great reason to soft mod it I may give it a go.

Once you go iphone, you cannot go back. *snaps fingers*

It's a cinch... You basically just upgrade to the latest firmware and run QuickPwn.

I bought Delivery Status Touch 2.0 yesterday, this app is awesome. It's a package tracking app (which supports EVERYTHING - DHL, UPS, USPS, FedEx, Amazon, Apple store, etc) and has a slick UI and lots of nice features. Should come in handy if you've been buying a lot of stuff online like I've been doing lately :lol

It's 99 cents for a limited time so check it out and support an awesome app: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=290986013&mt=8

Is there any reason why quickpwn doesn't support the 2G ipod touch? Or anyone know if there's a timeline for it? :/
Different processors or something. It's been said by all the hacker people that until something significant comes along, only a hard mod will make the 2G Touch pwnable.

It would seem so. I usually hate Apple products but the iPhone is just a fantastically designed device. The UI is lovely.

Shame about the camera...

the camera hate is a bit overblown in my opinion. It's a decent camera, but most people I know who have an iPhone don't know how to use it properly. Once you learn that you hold the button down, frame the shote, and THEN release the button, you get much better results. Most people I know just try to tap the button, and they get shitty photos as a result.

My issue is the lack of flash. In daylight, it's alright. But no flash in 2008 is crazy!

Snapture, even the free version, goes a long way towards making it more useful. One more reason to jailbreak.

I'll check it out, thanks.

Question: is there any way to have files unchecked in iTunes by default when they're imported? My girlfriend doesn't want to have all her library on her iPhone (it won't fit) so it's set up just to sync checked items. But everything she imports to iTunes is checked by default, it's pretty annoying having to remember to uncheck stuff after import.

Just use a playlist with the music she does want on the phone and have the phone sync with that playlist. My library doesn't come close to fitting on the phone, so I just created a playlist with the same name as the phone and have the phone sync to that and any other playlists I may care to have to sync with.

As far as I know, there isn't any way to set check/uncheck the music except manually. IIRC, it's not an option to set with Smart Playlists, nor is it it available via AppleScript (which wouldn't matter unless you're on a Mac).

Yeah, that playlist thing should work fine. Cheers :)

I've been using this since it came out and the widget pretty much since that began, and it's great. The new versions have added a web service to sync the widget and the iPhone app over the Internet, and with any luck he'll add the necessary functionality when push notifications show up.

Wow, RebelTouch looks great. I'm considering getting the Devil color, do you have any idea if it would look that great in use?
I have this case in yellow/black and it looks awesome.

I'm assuming you're talking about the red/black color combo when you say devil color. The red will be a plastic and the black will be a silicone case.

Looks great and functions well.

Love it.

Anyone have any good opinions of the iPhone version of Tetris? As a hardcore Tetris lover, I was just wondering if the controls are good (better than tris?). Tris is ok, but I want something that more closely follows the Tetris Company guidelines.

I've read bout long startup times for EA Tetris (due to splash screens), crashes and so on. Strangely, there are multiple versions of EA Tetris available, the US store carreis version 1.1.86, the Japanese version is 1.1.30, and the euro version appears to be 1.1.31. Are the 1.1 version more stable?

I have a problem connecting to my WiFi linksys router at home. I can connect to other WiFi networks with no problem but my iPhone will connect at home but the internet is either unbearably slow or simply will not load the page.

Any suggestions?

I appreciate that you want a flash on your cell phone, but even now it's not like every cell phone comes with a flash. I don't know anyone who has a flash on their cell phone camera, and that includes two of my friends who have picked up new phones in the past month. Yes, having a flash is more common than it was just a year or two ago, but it's not THAT common yet.

My NetGear at home is a slow piece of shit too but apparently it's not big enough of a problem for Apple to look into it or anyone to do anything about it .

Maybe it's different in Europe, I'm in the UK and my last 4 phones have had a form of flash. I don't know anybody that has a phone without one, other than people with iPhones. Obviously it's not a deal breaker given that I just ordered one but it seems odd to me for a phone not to have flash.

Yeah we don't have voice dial or MMS. Camera flash is not important.

Though the iPhone camera is decent at best, other cameras in its class have far superior cameras.

Not good enough, Apple. Not good enough.

Yeah, that could be the case. Different here in the States.

I can think of a different kind of Flash I'd rather have on the iPhone then the one we've been mentioning.

Not good enough, Apple. Not good enough.

Since I roll with a DSLR most of the time, I would never be happy with any cellphone camera, so I bought CameraBag and am quite happy with the "Instant" processing, which makes it look all Poloroid-y. CameraBag does have a nasty habit of crashing the phone when it gets out of memory.

Am I the only one who doesn't care if my phone has a shitty camera? If I'm going somewhere where I'm going to want to take decent photos I'll, you know, take a camera. Even a semi-decent P&S camera is going to take better pictures than the vast, vast majority of phones.

Yeah I agree.... Phone cameras are for documenting random crazy shit, parties, and at most, facebook profile photos. It's not like you'd use it for some sort of creative art project.

That said a better shutter speed, zoom, flash would all still help... but it's no dealbreaker.

I've used it for art project kind of stuff before because it has a warm low fidelity and enslavement to pre-existing lighting conditions that makes for a fun challenge.

I'd murder people for a flash, but no, it's not a deal breaker. People are increasingly only taking photos with their phones due to that whole convergence device thing, though, which isn't a good trend since phone cameras still suck. Phone makers need to make a conscious effort to push for better cameras soon, or there's gonna be a period of time where 90% of photos are shitty resolution with ambiguous lighting and lack of detail and yadda yadda. Especially with America's economy making it difficult to justify any kind of camera purchase.

The problem is at night time you can't take a picture at all. I don't mind that the general quality isn't high, in good lighting conditions the thing is good enough, just that if I'm out at night with people the thing is essentially useless.

Exactly how I feel. I have a DSLR for serious stuff, and a tiny point and shoot for other things. The iPhone camera is just icing on the cake, and it's always worked perfectly fine for when ever I've actually needed to use it.

Camera gripes are sort of legit as there are 5MP cameras in some phones nowadays.

Since the iPhone is the "everything in one" device, I spose people naturally assume the camera would be as fresh as the rest of the device.

The camera suits my personal needs, but I've never been big on taking pictures in the first place anyways.
