16-18 months into the 24 month contract is usually when the upgrade eligibility is available. If your line has a high RPO, i.e; data / msg/ insurance/ world traveler etc, then your upgrade can be available as soon as a year into the 2 yr contract. Seen this on a few occasions.

You mean a femtocell? Yes, we have one on the way. Essentially a mini tower that improves indoor signal reception. Requires a broadband connection like the others that are offering it. Should be out soon, do not have a eta nor pricing.

Do know that the mini notebooks are slowly being released to certain markets for sale w/ an lapton data service. Standard 2yr commitment for 5GB of data use at $60 month, not sure price on books though.
 
Is there an average discount that schools get? I'm starting to law school in the Fall and would love to pick up a new iphone if I get a sizable discount.

15% is what I see for the local community & university students here. That is about what the Fed Gov't employee's get, along with military & state employees. USPO get 24%, FedEx gets 22%, Boeing employees get a similar figure. Highest would go to HP & Coca Cola employees @ 28%.

AT&T provides each company has their own FAN discount number that should be available from their HR dept. Schools can check their campus bullentins or maybe newsletters for eligibility. AT&T offers discounts for many companies, schools, and organizations. Can also check discount eligibility on the att website by providing work/school email address.

would be fucking great if they suddenly announced a deal with Verizon so I wouldn't have to buy out my contract.

That's awesome. I'm 18 months into my original iPhone contract and just assumed I'd have to add another 2 years to upgrade.

Would solve the issue of a two month sales gap. Broaden the marketshare greatly. Popularize video calling (which would only take if every iPhone had it) and serve as a huge differentiator. Of course, the much faster video-recording super phone will still come out in July and apple will retain the high end brand strength.

I think this would be a hugely successful move on their part. I'd go so far as to say that if they don't do this much, they'll have gotten lazy.

There's also news that Jobs is coming back THIS month to host a media event. It's possible we won't even see the new iPhone at WWDC, instead it might be revealed at this late June event.

Mainstream news is reporting on a cheaper mass market iPhone. It's definitely going to hit before the major upgrade. And it will be at least a month and a week if the consensus of a July 17th launch is true. Add the couple of weeks of dried up inventory we've seen and that would have otherwise been a two month gap.

The month long gap last year was also more like two months considering the supply chain, and it was not at all an ideal thing for Apple to deal with. A mass market iPhone that can be ready immediately is a much nicer alternative, because it provides continuity that consumers expect (what if Apple was forced to stop selling iPods for a month every year), while also giving the layman an opportunity to buy the hype while it's still buzzing post-announcement.
 
How would the iPhone become more "discount"? I wonder what features they would remove...less storage? Take 3G back out or something...?

iPhones and iPods are different though. I almost see the month or so gap as necessary when dealing with a phone. With the iPhone, Apple has to deal with FCC approvals and make sure everything is kosher with AT&T. While the cheaper iPhone rumors are pretty strong, and I don't really see that as any proof that they will go on sale this Monday. You say it's "definitely going to hit before the major upgrade." Unless you have some inside info, I wouldn't be so sure man.

PLUS, even with iPods, they never go on sale they day they are announced, rather a few days later.

No, they're often on sale right away, with shipments already in the store waiting for the announcement.

I don't see a cheaper phone before the real new one. It has the potential to backfire hard on customers that bought the cheap 3G without knowing a new one was coming.

Oh, sorry I missed your question.
No, when I had my Edge phone I used it with T-Mobile so it was unlocked.
But really wanted the 3G when it launched later, saw I could get a corp. discount, and move to ATT.

It's now unlocked via software unlock methods.

Wait, 3G with vid chat for $99? I just don't see it happening without ripping me a new asshole with a plan. If I could buy it outright at that price I would replace last years model in a heartbeat!
 
So reading the last page or so, in the US you have to take specific iPhone plans to get an iPhone? o.O I guess that's why it's seen as a really high end phone?

And wtf Rogers has a 2 year hup minimum now? Wow. Last year they made it 3 months to get an iPhone (instead of the regular 1 year) because they were desperate for people to buy the iPhone :lol

WWDC should be fun :) E3 first, now this. June's great. Where can I see what's leaked?
 
Damn, I'm really excited about a new iPhone, even though I know (and hope) there will be very few cosmetic and technical changes.

Apple have me by the balls, I'm in love with this device.

It's not really *just* the iPhone. Pretty much every smartphone requires a data plan on top of minutes/messaging.
I'm not sure if it's still the case, but I think you can sign up for the data plan and then immediately call and cancel it.... but then you don't have a data connection...
 
If indeed the new iPhone has the HP jack on the bottom, it'll be taking a hint from the 2G iPod Touch. I just got an iPhone a month or so ago, and was pretty surprised when the jack was in a different place (since I had a Touch first).

The Upgrade will simply start a new commitment the day you sign the dot not add another 2yrs to the existing contract.

Well thank goodness that is not a deal breaker that I use when looking for a phone. I already have a digital camera with zoom and flash.:D
 
As someone who's going to WWDC, I'm more excited about Snow Leopard than the iPhone at the moment, but I guess that may change depending on how the announcements and sessions go.

On a side note, In N Out is utter crap, but it always amuses me to see people trumpet the chain online as if it were some some amazing Californian landmark.

Man, I really hope they let us upgrade from the 3G at the subsidized price (or at least $99 for new contracts, $199 for upgrades). I want the new one :(
 
Blurgh, dunno why flash is a deal-breaker for anyone. Anything other than Xenon is worthless.

IIRC, here in the UK, O2 let existing iPhone customers upgrade early and for a subsidised cost compared to new customers.

Crossing my fingers it's the same this year. :D
