Yeah, I hoped Canada would receive it the same time the US does this time around. *fingers crossed*

There's a reason AT&T is the #1 trending topic on Twitter right now, and just about every post about them is angry.
I mean this really frustrates me, i want an Iphone, I like what it offers better than the Pre, but literally i will be paying the same price on At&t for 550 less minutes and it has no insurance. I guess im late to the bitching party but this really changes my mind about possibly jumping ship to At&T.

Is there any signs that they may reduce rates in the near future?

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I doubt AT&T will drop their prices anytime soon, too many people pay it without question.

Seems like I'll be on sprint until iPhone comes to Verizon or T-Mobile or something.

Nope. It is ridiculous, but luckily my job offers me 25% off. It's definitely not the best value, though.

I heard that AT&T only had the iPhone as an exclusive for 2 years. Given that the original iPhone was released on June 29th, 2007, wouldn't that be up at the end of the month?

Any word on other carriers yet?

It's AT&T.
I dont follow cell phone trends or their reputations (been a sprint customer for 4 years) I take that to mean they are blow hards and I have a better chance of getting into a threesome with Scarlett Johansen and Jessica Biel than seeing them reduce their rates.

Guess i got some thinking to do before the 19th.

The last thing I heard was Verizon wanted it in 2010 but AT&T put in a bid to extend their exclusivity deal. Then I heard no more.

Are you a student or employed?

Usually 15-25% discounts.

Actually back in 07, it was thought to be 5 years. Recent reports say the deal is only for 3 yrs with an option to continue or not. However earlier this year Apple said they are happy with AT&T and have no plans to break the deal (without directly commenting on the length). Likely to new provider until next year at the earliest and it probably won't be for the iPhone 3G

Do you need unlimited? Isn't there a $5 for 200 deal?

Yea there is but I use more than that, and talk to my girlfriend a good bit (long distance).

Im a student but when i checked i didnt see any sort of discounts for the Iphone? Did I miss something? Cause saving 25% would probably sway me enough to do it.
So your school is an ATT premier member then? Call them and see what you can do. I'm sure a good bit coaxing (since you're a new customer and will be signing a new contract) might do it.

I guess, they asked me to fill out my school email and then sent me an email confirmation. Clicked the link, put the plan into my basket and saw no real difference.

I'll try that though. A guy that comes to the bar I work at works for ATT, so i will ask him about it.

Some people already got the 3.0 GM floating around... and it doesn't need a dev account apparently... is this illegal/bad/unwise?

Some small savings, atleast for my school. The $39 minutes plan becomes $37 or the $59 becomes $56. Data plan goes from $30 to $28.50, and the messaging options appeared the same. So did the iPhone price, btw.

So only some very slight savings there, probably $5 a month. It'll go a little further since everything helps with the taxes, but still, I don't see how this could save someone looking for a better value.

AT&T has always been the worst part about the iPhone, and todays news continued that trend. It was like here's MMS which AT&T doesn't support, here's tethering which AT&T doesn't support, and here's our new phone which doesn't qualify for upgrade pricing thanks to AT&T.

Apple knows it too with that not-so-subtle dig from Phil Schiller during the keynote. You'd think AT&T would bend over backwards to keep the iPhone exclusive, but no. My desperate hope is that all this negative press will force AT&T to reconsider, but I know that won't happen.

For some reason it's telling me AT&T couldn't complete my account upgrade on the Apple webstore. So I'd have to go in to get a 3GS. I'll just wait. Gonna get a replacement 3G because the headphone jack no longer works with anything (headphones go in but the mic/skip button doesn't work). Then I'll buy a 3GS and sell off that 3G. :)

All three but you'll be fine. The iPhone is remarkably easy to recover from fuckups.

OK guys what alternatives and workarounds are there to use the iPhone on another carrier apart from AT&T? What would I be giving up using it on T-mobile for example. If I buy the phone unsubsidized it's unlocked, right?

Yeah I liked that a lot. In the past, people have criticized Apple for not offering these things on the phone but at least now it's become clearer that it's because of AT&T as other providers are going to be offering this stuff.

Very doubtful. They also got bad press when they jacked the price for the iPhone 3G plans $10 from the original iPhone, didn't change a thing. I really hope the exclusivity goes away because AT&T's service frankly sucks. :\

I've had the same problem since a week or two after the 3G launch. :\

I think I will jump ship to AT&T this month for the 3GS, I've been using an unlocked iphone 2G on T-mobile and while it is ok and all I want to upgrade to 3GS which is why I stayed out of contract since Jan with T-mobile. My question is what is the going rate for an unlocked 2G phone? Am I better off just keeping my 2G as a back up iphone?

Matix said:
Okay, quick question. I'm a current iPhone-3G owner and I'm planning on purchasing a iPhone-3GS asap. Would my best bet be exit out of my nearly year old contract, just to start another 2 year contract for the 3GS? Or should I wait to see if AT&T will offer some kind of reduce price for current customers?

They're not going to, standard hardware upgrade cycles apply, even to the iPhone. The best you can do is maybe sign another 2-year contract. But that's, like, really fucking excessive.

Hmm better not do it then, I guess what's another week >_>

Hopefully Apple puts out an "iPod Touch Phone" (identical to the iPhone 3GS except in name) on Verizon & Sprint or something to get around AT&T's "iPhone" exclusivity :lol

I really wanted to get a 3GS but AT&T is making it a difficult decision for me. I don't qualify for the standard upgrade pricing until Dec 12th and at that point it's almost like I should just wait a few more months for the next revision. Especially if AT&T's exclusivity runs out in 2010 as has been rumored - it'd be kinda dumb to sign a new two year contract in mid-December if that were the case. Ugh.

I didn't know there's an early upgrade option.

iPhone 3G S: Device Pricing
• iPhone 3G S will cost $199 (16GB) and $299 (32GB) for new and qualifying customers.
• If you are not currently eligible for an upgrade but still want iPhone 3G S, early upgrade prices are $399 (16GB) and $499 (32GB)
• No-commitment pricing: $599 (16GB) and $699 (32GB)
http://i.gizmodo.com/5283568/real-cost-of-iphone-3gs-about-218-more-than-you-think?skyline=true&s=x

That's good news for my father and brother, unless they already know.

How the hell do I get shafted with a $100 deposit with a 755 credit score?!

So I have to give them

199 for the phone
74.99 for the plan
35.99 for One time activation
100.00 for deposit.

So altogether.........405+ dollars?!?! Fuckin A.

Fuck that.

One of the three major credit bureaus determined that deposit requirement, not really att. You should be able to request which bureau was the deciding factor on the deposit. Regardless, its refunded back after 1 year.

Yup and ones credit score is not the same with each bureau. I once had a 100 point difference from one tot he next because some things had not been reported to one but did to another.

His 755 could really be lower. So if he is a 755 when was the number last checked and from which bureau. I would get all 3 major ones just to know where one stands.

So... has by chance anyone heard if 3.0 breaks the 2G unlock? I have the ipsw, and its very tempting to install it. I'm running a 2G with Rogers in Canada, so clearly I need the unlock to stay functional.

Sorry, we are not there yet nor is any other carrier. This is a mobile network not a dedicated fiber optic one though we are not far out.

Tethering will be available soon without a doubt. WinMo & BB have this capability, no reason why iPhone will be barred. Thing is, customers have been paying EXTRA for this feature without fuss yet you guys can barely make a post without complaining about the standard smartphone data price which is what WinMo & BB customers have been paying for in a long time. Remember that the iPhone is an extremely data intensive device compared to the other brands, so $30 is reasonable. For those of you who wish Apple announced the iPhone on another carrier because att is too expensive know that Verizon's smartphone data feature also starts at $30.

The whole MMS thing will probably never be figured out. It's part of all AT&T Messaging (SMS/MMS/IM) features & about 95% of phones support it except the iPhone until recently. Prior to 3.0, it was said that battery consumption was a reason to exclude it at first which can make sense. This one baffles me.

Actually we are there, I don't know what your networks are like where you live but this is a standard feature for myself here on the "3" network in Australia.

Yeah, from what I've read the issue overseas - where cell networks are a bit more advanced than what we have here in the U.S. - is more "people don't really want to use it" more than "the networks can't handle people using it."

YMMV on where you live, though. Maybe everyone loves it in Australia. ;)

We don't. :)
It's rarely used as it's quite expensive, but as a feature that has been around for a while in a lot of handsets then it's not unrealistic to have half-expected it as a feature in the new iPhone.

That said, I won't miss that it's not there. :D

to hell with this. im getting an ipod touch and toughing it out for a year. these prices are insane.

You pay to play baby. Life aint cheap. My Iphone has been worth every penny. Yes ATT is a whore but I am her biatch :D

It amazes me that some people are willing to risk even a slim chance of permanently fucking their phone just to get a few features a week early :lol
