For those that upgraded to 3.0 GM without a developer account: is there anything special you need to do in iTunes? You don't need to Quickpwn or anything right? Just use iTunes 8.2 and shift-update in windows?
Nope

Aight, I thought they had a pay-as-you-go data plan. Any word if Softbank is going to use the new options available to third parties (IAP, bluetooth, linking hardware and software etc) to add other features standard in the Japanese mobule scene?

Well there is a pay-as-you-go data plan, but you end up hitting the limit pretty quickly, so by default you use the unlimited data plan.

Not sure about what Softbank plans to do about features TBH.

I am the owner of an original 2D iPhone (I purchased mine about 2mos after it initially came out) from 2007.

I originally purchased it because, well I was caught up in the hype, and I ended up loving the phone and even teh service. For some reason here in NYC, AT&T gets me better reception and call quality than Verizon (who I had used previously for over 2 years).

I was loving my phone, and I was able to deal with the fact that it had no MMS, and the camera was shit. Then they announce the 3G last year, and this is where my relationship with AT&T started to go sour.

When the 3G came out, AT&T jacked their prices up for the data plan and the txt messaging rates, and pretty much helped me make my decision on not upgrading (kind of glad I did now). Currently with my original 2D iPhone I pay about $83 a month for 450min 5000N&W, and 1500txt with unlimited data. If I went to the 3G, it would bring my monthly bill to over $100. No Thanks.

Now, fast forward to yesterday and the announcement of the 3Gs, and its many new features. Again, I am very tempted to get this upgrade, but AT&T went and dropped the ball. Apple announces that the new phone will have MMS, but for AT&T customers we have to wait until end of summer! Why? Because it seems AT&T has to manually remove the opt-out code. We have known about this MMS feature since January when Apple first announced it was a feature in the 3.0 OS, and in the 6 months that followed AT&T couldn't even get it ready for the launch next week. Shame on you AT&T!!

You know that when AT&T sits down with Apple to try and lengthen their exclusivity contract for the iPhone, Apple is sure as shit going to bring up the MMS issue, as well as the tethering issue.

I really want to get this new 3Gs, but are the new features really worth all the 3G headaches I have been reading about, and the extra money tacked on to my bill every month? I just don't know.....

1. MMS issue will be fixed. And since you are a att iphone user you do not have mms right now so another month or 2 will not kill you.

2. What 3g issues? I have never had the 2g phone but I love my 3g. And 3.0 has foxed pretty much any complaint I had with the phone except mms which will be resolved by the end of summer.

No one can tell you if its worth it for you to upgrade. Personally I would upgrade to atleast a 3g.

yep, reserved both phones online

I am cautious about the reserve online promotion. According the fine print, reservation does not guarantee a phone. It's still first come, first served. Anyone else notice this?

I think that's the legality fine print of alot of online reserves. I doubt there will really be a issue getting the phone day one even if you do not reserve.

Mainly because of the fact you can not upgrade early unless you go full price. :lol

Yes, I saw that. Didn't know if it referred to the 3GS or the 3G or both. I'm going to try to visit the Apple store tomorrow or Thursday to ask about the reservation process. I think it is at least good to get the credit check stuff done ahead of time.

we're getting ours shipped...fuck the lines

ok, bad wording on my part, we pre-ordered the phones. when you buy it from apple.com you have the choice to reserve for store pick up or have it shipped

2G unlocked iphone user here, will it work for me using the regular procedure (i.e. iTunes only)? Did you restore your settings or leave it as a fresh upgrade?

I just chose "shift-check for update" in iTunes and pointed to the ipsw file.

Just tried to turn on Internet tethering it tells me "please contact Rogers". WTF!

Rogers and other carriers will have to activate it. I heard some got it to work by messing with carrier files or something. Same for some users getting mms to work. I have not tried to get either to work myself.

Manics said:

With almost any data plan, the tethering trigger is actually a feature coded on the account side, so it won't work unless you actually get a tethering plan.

Huh, where do you get the Update from if you're not a developer? :o

Is it possible to reseve the new iPhone 3GS without a ATT contract yet. I called one of the stores and the clerk said i can come in a apply for an ATT account and reserve the iPhone now but I really didn't trust what he says, since if I do sign up for ATT now I will be without a phone from now until the iPhone comes out.

Just did the google search and read this

"This version of iPhone OS 3.0 should only be deployed on devices dedicated for iPhone OS 3.0 GM Seed software development. By installing iPhone OS 3.0 GM Seed software on your Authorized Test Devices, these Devices are permanently “locked” into testing mode and cannot be restored to an earlier release of iPhone OS. Bear this in mind before installing the software."

I think I'll wait for the 17th but could anyone explain me the risks of updating now?

The risk is you'll be way cooler than your buddy who didn't upgrade and is still on 2.2.1. :D

I put in my order for an iPhone 3G S (32GB, white) yesterday afternoon. I bought the original iPhone OG the week it was released. After the 3G, it was pretty obvious that Apple was going to release a new iPhone every summer. I decided to hold out past the 3G (since the improvements - 3G and GPS) were pretty minor. Now I'm getting all the 3G improvements plus way more. Nobody's really used it yet, but the new processor and system memory are going to be the real killer features of the 3G S. These next 10 days of waiting are going to kill me! But hey, it's better than waiting until July like the rumor mill said.

Why not just reserve online and buy through the Apple Online Store, have it delivered to your door on release day? That's what I did, mainly because I don't have an Apple Store in my town (closest one is about 2hrs away in Jacksonville, FL) and there's no way in hell I'm going to the AT&T store and dealing with those fuck-heads.

Just upgraded to 3.0 on my 2G iPhone (not a developer). No issues with the install at all. I did find a bug though, the camera roll icon is missing in the camera app, a black box is in the icons place.

Btw, this is my first post from the web app, very cool stuff!

That box should show you the photo after you take it. Might be black before you take a photo.

You need to get the 3.0 GM ipsw file. Then in iTunes 8.2 click "Shift-Check for Update", and point to the ipsw file wherever you saved it. That's assuming you're running iTunes on Windows, I have no idea how it works on the Mac.

I also got a question regarding Mobile Me.

to get push notification to workm will I have to buy mobile me to get that to work when I get 3.0?

if so, I really hope that someone will create a MSN messenger program for the Iphone that can be run in the background while I do other stuff or when the iphone is in sleep mode, would be great to still get a instant notification when somone is typing me.

yes but does every feature that will be in the official release next wednesday work?
or is there something thats not working with this 3.0 and if I do upgrade to this 3.0 GW will it be able to brick the phone or any other negative stuff that can happen?

Push notification will work if an appstore app adds that functionality to their program. One chat program that will have it is Beejive http://www.beejive.com/

So in short, no you don't need MobileMe to get push notificaitons.

What's the rush to update to 3.0?

It is easier to just wait a few days for the official rollout.

As far as I know the gold master is the same as what will be released next week. So you get everything.

No, you don't need MobileMe. Push notification is a feature that comes with OS 3.0 and doesn't need anything else to work.

Also, updating to 3.0 now is rather pointless since the main features of it won't be available until applications take advantage of them. The only reasons would be if you're just dying for cut/paste, landscape typing, and search.

Seems just as easy to update now I think if you know where to look. The software update is FREE if you already own an iPhone so I don't see what the harm is. Not like you're breaking a major rule by updating a week early.

This has been explained over and over again.

That paragraph describes the test phones devs are given. The firmware is nothing more than 3.0. Like I could rename the file 3.0 and you would not know the difference.

3.0gm is the gold version of 3.0 Its used to make sure all 3.0 apps are ready. It was the same for 2.0.

So once again wait or don't. But 3.0 gm is not some extra program. Its 3.0 and works great.

thanks for the help guys!!

Okej so wher do I get this 3.0 GW file ?

I have iTunes 8.2.0.23, will that work?

Alright, got 3.0 working and it's pretty fantastic.

Question: Does anyone know how to activate the "search email on server" function for Gmail on 3.0? Like, for an email I'm searching for that isn't on my phone but tucked away in my archives. Or does Gmail not support it?

There are over a 1000 new things. alot of them small that should have been there day one and really worth it.

but the stability, speed and smoothness of the new os is more than worth it. not to mention the updates to safari. The iphone is a laptop now. It saves passwords and auto logs in. Trust me it was worth the 15 mins it took to dl and install it.

Your uninformed. 3.0 is day and night from 2.0

** Just notice auto search in sms. Just start typing a contacts number or name and it finds them. Like sweet Just another 3.0 moment

Anyone here in canada gaf can tell me the best price plan you can get for the iphone? right now im able to get a discount through work with 450 anytimes minues and 2 gb of data and text for 64 plus taxes a month? is here a better deal? Also I am a first time Iphone user how much data is normal usage?

You need iTunes 8.2.0.23 so you're good to go. I can't post a link to the firmware for fear of getting banned sorry. Google is your friend.

I'm in the developer program. I've been using it since beta 1. It's not all that dramatic of a change for the end-user until applications take advantage of those 100s of features.

Landscape email is a pretty big end-user change as is Spotlight search. The lack of push notification applications right now doesn't mean it's a worthless update. Hell even performing a search in your iPod is a big change from 2.x. I guess it all depends on what you consider "dramatic" but there's quite a bit that's different.

Or that

1. He is lying and not a dev.

I have yet to stop finding useful things. Landscape qwerty sms and the fired up safari are more than worth installing the update.

The real questions is why wait?

They're nice, but I think my wants are different. I'm more interested in applications being able to interact with your iPod library, use your microphone, manipulate your camera more than it used to be able to, push notifications, Bluetooth/Wifi/dock connection access, and even things like HTTP streaming and HTML5 audio/video tags. To me, supporting simple audio/video HTML tags makes the demands for shitty, old technology like Flash look even dumber.

There are more examples I can't remember, but I remember in that first iPhone 3.0 announcement, there were so many new things added to the API that were previously locked down and made apps seem so "sandboxed." It all got blown wide open.

I think I'm more #2. Everyone here considers me the type to troll Apple.

So is there a way to run the update on a Mac? I assume it's the same process, just snag the IPSW file and force-restore the firmware to 3.0 in iTunes?
