I have a 3G, but i went ahead and ordered a 3GS for the $399 price. I use my iPhone so much, that the speed increase will really make the experience better, IMO. All the other new hardware stuff is just icing on the cake.

There are over a 1000 new things. alot of them small that should have been there day one and really worth it.

but the stability, speed and smoothness of the new os is more than worth it. not to mention the updates to safari. The iphone is a laptop now. It saves passwords and auto logs in. Trust me it was worth the 15 mins it took to dl and install it.

Your uninformed. 3.0 is day and night from 2.0

** Just notice auto search in sms. Just start typing a contacts number or name and it finds them. Like sweet Just another 3.0 moment

Hmm. I can search my contacts somewhat in 2.2. If I type a name, it finds the contact.

If the 3.0 torrents are making the rounds, this would be a perfect chance to slip a trojan in, I would imagine. I wonder...

They're nice, but I think my wants are different. I'm more interested in applications being able to interact with your iPod library, use your microphone, manipulate your camera more than it used to be able to, push notifications, Bluetooth/Wifi/dock connection access, and even things like HTTP streaming and HTML5 audio/video tags. To me, supporting simple audio/video HTML tags makes the demands for shitty, old technology like Flash look even dumber.

There are more examples I can't remember, but I remember in that first iPhone 3.0 announcement, there were so many new things added to the API that were previously locked down and made apps seem so "sandboxed." It all got blown wide open.

I agree. Everyone here considers me the type to troll Apple.

Right but a smoother faster more stable iphone is not worth it?

Full landscape across apps?

Updated full fledged safari?

not to mention the many small fixes I have seen. I dunno but those alone sound like a great reason to update and sinnce its risk free whats the issue?

So is there a way to run the update on a Mac? I assume it's the same process, just snag the IPSW file and force-restore the firmware to 3.0 in iTunes?

I did an UPDATE not restore.

Or that

1. He is lying and not a dev.

2. A troll

I have yet to stop finding useful things. Landscape qwerty sms and the fired up safari are more than worth installing the update.

The real questions is why wait?

sounds very cool but where is the shift check for updates button in iTunes??
or am I suppose to HOLD DOWN shift and then press check for updates

ah fuck this, I dont want to download a file from some strange site and just install it on my iphone, I am not that good of a computer wizz to figure this thing out hehe, I wait for the official release :)

You're really making it seem like more than it is. It's not that much smoother or stable. (This is where we all make the "It feels snappier" joke.) At this moment, it feels like 2.0 with Spotlight and landscape mode to me.

I agree, if you think 3.0 isn't that big a deal since there aren't apps utilizing all the new APIs yet you may be on 2.2.1 for a while. :lol I see no reason to stay with 2.2.1 now that 3.0 is out.

I never had 2.2 so if it was a part of 2.2 i did not know. I had 2.1 when I went to 3.0

Hold down the SHIFT key and press the button "check for updates"

2.0 was laggy as hell, no way in hell this is like 2.0. The contacts list alone with no lag makes it greater than 2.0

My Sprint contract has been up for a few weeks and Ive never used another carrier. I must say the 32 gig 3GS is damn tempting but $299 hurts my wallet bad. Ive never owned an iPod or digital camera and need both badly. Ill wait a few more weeks till its out so I can compare it directly to the Pre but based on what Ive read so far Im leaning towards the 3GS. Im just worried about ATT's service. :|

I think your downplaying it more than it is for some reason.

So in 2.0 i have a landscape qwerty keyboard.?

So in safari in 2.0 it keeps me logged in say in Gaf and auto logs me in if i get signed out?

The detailed recent calls. That alone is huge.

So its not that much stable and smoother? :lol Right there is where the troll alarm went off.

thanks you rock but I wait for the official release, it seems its just not to download a file and then start itunes and shift check for updates, I read that I have to have a specific iso program to extract the file or something haha

I aint that good at computers so I wait for the easy official release instead :)

That's probably best if you've never tried this before.

Ok so I'm stupid. I didn't realize I was supposed to deauthorize my iTunes account on my last hard drive. I replaced my laptop's hard drive with a new one. I still have my old one and ordered an enclosure I should have hopefully before the 17th. Can I still deauthorize my old HDD?

Not a apple troll. Just a troll.

We are talking significant changes that many users have been begging for. Like landscape and auto log on in safari.

And he is basically trolling, per the definition, this thread.

What would you call his posts. He is not adding to the convo just hijacking it.

Seems like he's offering a different opinion from yours as to the level of significance the upgrades bring. I don't see his comments as trolling at all, just putting his expectations elsewhere. Seems like he is more interested in what the update can bring to the Apps.

After watching Gizmodo's condensed version of Apple's 3GS video tour, I'm pretty impressed with the way you can edit video with the phone. It's probably a feature I'll use once and then never again, but STILL. Editing video! With your fingers! On a cellphone!!! It's almost like I would be losing money by not owning this phone.

Why?

Cause some how you can be a troll but not be trolling cause of you longevity.

The issue is you said yourself you don't care about most of the features some of us are excited about. And bashing 3.0 because of it.

You are trolling this thread.

Like I said before qwewrty sms is a huge. And your reply, 3.0 is worthless right now.

Good shit man. Love your attitude.

Thats fine but thats not what he was saying.

He commented on a question and threw in hey its worthless now. And once some of us who felt differently posted what we though after using the final 3.0 he showed his true motive is to troll.

This is the comment that made me feel he is trolling

That is like me like say calling a port of a game is downgrade.

It might be my opinion but the post would be made to incite some anger. Hence his 2.0 with spotlight and landscape mode.

Maybe he's been using the beta for so long he just takes a lot of stuff for granted and is anxious for the 3rd party apps to use the new features. Since this is my first exposure to 3.0 I'm really happy with it, I mean I can FINALLY email more than 1 photo at at time from my camera roll, you don't know how annoying that was to have to create 3-4 separate emails if I wanted to send someone a few photos I took. That's just one thing, but in my mind a much needed addition and glad that i now have it.

Like say calling a port a downgrade.

Just how I took his posts. He might be exactly what you say but he needs to understand trolling is still trolling imho.

There is no reason not to upgrade if you want to. Or waiting. Bashing the current state of the firmware is trolling.

He's entitled to his opinions but saying "it feels like 2.0 with Spotlight and landscape mode to me" is a bit out there. I mean even Apple had to admit 2.0 was rushed out and even said in a conference they were releasing a software update just to address lagging issues / 3G issues that a lot of users were having with 2.0.

3.0 doesn't feel rushed at all, no lags or performance issues that I can see so far.

Well I don't mean 2.0, but 2.2 or whatever version we were last on which was really stable.

The way I use my phone is that I have all of the apps I use often on my first and second screens, so search isn't that big of a deal to me. I don't have 100s of people in my phone or e-mail listings. To me, what will make 3.0 good is what those front screen apps can now do rather than how I can navigate a device that isn't particularly cluttered enough to need search. Landscape is nice too, but I've always liked typing in the regular mode because it's easier for me to handle the phone that way (maybe I have weird hands). Copy/paste isn't too great to me because I feel like e-mail, maps, photos, and other apps always had great contextual options anyway (e-mail this photo, address auto-detection in mail, etc.).

Push notifications and a far more open API is where 3.0 is at.

I can not go on to gaming side and call a port a downgrade even if its true. And I knwo this is the ot but your comment at that point was not needed. What did it add other than to derail the current discussion.

Now we must discuss the difference between 2.2 and 3.0 :lol

If this was gaming side your comment would star5t a LIST WAR lol. See my point. You were trolling. Even if you did not mean to. Yes for you 3.0 may not bring tons of needed and should have been there functions.

But it is different than most of us and bashing those functions with 2.0 with spotlight and landscape is to far.

Edit : comment on your edit. That is a much better explanation of your opinion than bashing the firmware. It was not till that 2.0 spotlight and landscape post that i thought you were trolling.

Fair enough. It's my first exposure to 3.0 so I'm excited about the changes. I can't wait for the first wave of apps that use the push notifications though. I use Beejive alot and I really am looking forward to being able to get notified even when the app isn't running. :D

Oh and my excitement over 3.0 now doe snot mean I can not wait for push and the rest of 3.0

I am big on push as well. Just damn some of these functions should have been there on day 1 and make my phone feel complete. Maybe that is the fucked up part.

What the fuck happened in this thread? :lol

Jeesh, cut and paste is nice but it's not something to splooge over. Same thing with landscape keyboards. I actually prefer the smaller one. Thumbs don't need to move as far.

There's no big reason to pressure anyone to torrent this fw and have to go through the longer restore process instead it just waiting till next week.

There's no "longer restore process". I updated the phone, no restore. It's just as fast as if you do it next week. Also, with the majority of people updating next week who knows if the Apple servers will get overloaded again with all the downloads.

Totally disagree there.

Updating my 3G to 3.0 this very moment. I'm not going to lie, I'm pretty excited. Nerdgasms to be had :lol

Edit: And I agree that this isn't a longer install process, given the fact that I could pull 3.0 off of a torrent so much faster than I will be able to when the floodgates open on the 17th. The process took less than 10 minutes.

Once again its more than that, There are over 1000 changes, small things like auto log on in safari. Even the new detailed recent calls.

To lump 3.0 into a couple functions is a disservice to the firmware and your own phone :lol

Next show me where one person has pressured some one to download it. The discussion was of its worth not if you should download it now.

Then you are the one that's really missing out. 2.2 was the best update since 2.0. It really stabilised a lot of things. Safari has probably crashed once for me since 2.2.

I don't think LKBP is trolling at all. You are misinterpreting what he is saying. He's simply saying that 3.0 FEELS little more than a couple of minor additions from current AT THE MOMENT, FOR HIM. He would be the first to agree that 3.0 is significant overall.

Trolling would more be something like:

"3.0 is nothing more than a glorified 2.0 with landscape and spotlight."

The difference is subtle, and when in text only can easily be misinterpreted, I'll give you that. But for someone who can read what is in a comma, you should be able to comprehend that.

For the end user, sure a few additions are great, but where the power is is in the APIs and what it means for the apps. I don't mind a landscape keyboard, and some other features are nifty, but it's not a game changer for the next week. I'm as excited as any to get 3.0, but it's not amazing for the next 1 week enough.

What? So its ok to go on gaming side go into a thread and call a part a downgrade? He stated his opinion before that comment and after that comment in a manner he should have. He made a trollish comment.

This isn't punctuation this is what he means and his motives. Same reason say trolling a port by calling it a downgrade is ban worthy. How would calling 3.0 2.0 with spotlight and landscape be any different?

The comment was not needed and just derailed the thread. That is why calling as port a downgrade is trolling.

We are all in here enjoying and discussing 3.0 He comes in and says its worthless right now and no better than 2.0 with landscape and spotlight. Right or wrong it was trolling.

That is like saying a wii game is a gamecube game with waggle or the wii is a gamecube with a new controller. It is the same thing is my point. And he could have expressed his opinion better and he did.

So no I do not think he was trolling now but his comment was trolling.

I admit I haven't been following this thread as closely as I could be, but I don't recall him saying that "3.0 IS DOWNGRADE TOTAL< APPLE AM FAIL."

He simply stated that, for the typical end user, in his opinion, the features that are available to someone who upgrades 1 week earlier don't amount to more than spotlight and landscape keyboard.

At least that's how I read it. But then, I am APPLE FANBOY, so I tend to read that kind of thing anyway.

One, he stated it as his opinion, and two, he's perhaps understating it somewhat, but I'd agree.

So no I do not think he was trolling now but his comment was trolling.
To be trolling, there has to be intent. I can see where his statement can be misconstrued, and his succinct nature can sometimes be a bit terse, which can add to the sentiment. I read his comment totally different than how you didi, obviously.

Liu Kang an Apple troll? :lol

Helpful? Yes. An asshole? Yes. Is that an uncomfortable combination? Yes. But a troll? No, not even close. A strongly stated, on-topic opinion is not trolling. Too bad if you don't like how and what he stated.

I have 3.0. It's nice, but still needs improvement in the user experience. Useful settings (e.g. quickly toggling wifi or 3G off) are still buried deep in the Settings app. If a program calls another, exiting the called program should return you to the original; you don't need robust background support for this to occur. I don't want the Stocks app; why can't I remove/hide it? Why can't Springboard remember where and what order I've arranged my apps? These are just a few user issues that remain unresolved. I like the iPhone quite a bit, but the niggling details leave Apple vulnerable.

Thankfully, jailbreaking cures a lot of these things. And I couldn't be without the App Store. Downloading random apps is an addiction.

All over, move along.

thewhiterabbit said:

And what exactly did your dozen accusatory posts do?

looks like i was wrong about the "restore" vs. "update" process. it's been so long since I've manually updated the phone like that, i thought you had to pick the restore option. fair enough.

I still maintain that while 3.0 has some nice new features, most (not all) users will see the biggest gains when 3rd party apps start using the new APIs.

Just pre-ordered a black 32 gig from the apple.com. I chose the standard free shipping. Will I receive my phone day 1 or will it ship that day and I will get it 2-3 days later?
