So I want to get one of these iPhone 3GS. I'm getting the $199 2-year deal. Will I just be able to walk into an ATT store on the 18th and get one? Or will it be extremely hard to find one?

Should I get the phone/2-year plan from the ATT website?

Carphone Warehouse in the UK are now taking pre-orders for delivery on the 19th.
Saves heading off into town!
I ordered just waiting on the confirmation email.....if you get one at all!!

Kinda OT, but I work for AT&T in their network backbone for the US and we just received an email from network operations to be very careful what routers we touch on 6/17-6/19 to make sure we don't bring down anything for the 3.0/3gs launch without the VP's approval.

I'm guessing this is kind of a big deal for AT&T :lol

They know they're already in hot water for blowing dicks on the tethering and MMS front. Having the network go down for the next iPhone release would just push everyone over the edge.

No offense to you, but I hate AT&T now that I've been on them for awhile with my iPhone.

Give me a Verizon iPhone and I will fill buckets with my excitement seed.

I would NEVER in my life have listened to anyone saying ATT wouldn't have MMS ready when 3.0 came out. I'm also pretty surprised the rumor mill wasn't churning the possiblity of no MMS before WWDC. It still blows my mind that after 3 years, we STILL don't have MMS.

To tell the truth I'm perfectly comfortable using email as a method of sending pics and such, but C'MON!!! my four year old Razor can send MMS.

The best part about it is that AT&T can't wait to charge us extra for MMS and tethering. Not only are they late to the party, but they are going to charge us for features that other carriers are going to be giving out like candy.

Seriously seriously can't stand AT&T.

...and to think that Verizon could have prevented all of this if they had just accepted Apple's offer in the first place!

Now Apple's in a position where they can't get rid of AT&T, because so many customers will be locked into contracts. Best case scenario is they start putting out GSM and CDMA dual-band devices that can run on both networks without a hitch, as well as giving Verizon customers in the US the ability to have network support when traveling abroad.

I'm glad they kept the design, it's a really good one. Plus, it means all of the existing cases and car docking type things already work so you're not waiting months for something to come out. Two thumbs up. That redesign above with the rectangular button at the bottom blows.

Saw this Tweet and I thought it was pretty amusing.

Look, I know the thing will sell no matter what, but don't tell me when Steve Jobs isn't at work you morons are going to be put out half-assed work with bad taste."

They'll definitely be leaving AT&T.

Don't forget all of the stupid data restrictions AT&T puts on iPhone apps, which neuters the unlimited access everyone is paying for. SlingPlayer works on 3G on Blackberries but requires Wifi on the iPhone. What the fuck.

Forgot about that stuff as well...

I always said that if the iPhone was getting iChat AV support, there is no way AT&T would allow that stuff to happen over 3G, and would make it a WiFi only thing.

I just don't think that Apple can walk away from AT&T now that so many people are locked into AT&T contracts. They'd have to do a phased approach of announcing new hardware on another carrier and not providing that same hardware to AT&T, or releasing this dual-band device as I mentioned and slowly ween people onto the Verizon network through increased functionality.

If it started to become a "you can do this on Verizon but you can't on AT&T" conversation, I think people would start to switch as their contracts were up.

Did you get any email to confirm the discount? The whole process is pretty vague and unintuitive, and I haven't heard shit from MS/Cashback. :'(

Got it this morning. As long as you got the little bing pop-up when you clicked through on the "Bing Cashback" link when searching for AT+T, you should have it soon.

Got $104 off the 32gb black iphone. $213 total, which is less than I would have paid at retail for a 16gb after tax.

How the hell can they afford to give out discounts like that?

Guys. Guys. Guys! hlap!

Black or white?

Black because I don't like how the white is two tone. Now, if they made the front and wallpaper white so that everything was white it would be a different story, but front black and back white is like an oreo.

Just gone mine, too. :)

Hopefully it's an instant one I can get via Paypal and not a 60 day one, but shit 105 bucks is 105 bucks.

Its still ridiculous you have to turn on the device, and use a damn app to find out whether its a 3G or 3GS.
The "iPhone" and FCC legal business on the back of the phone is in a much more visible chrome coloring on the 3GS, as opposed to the muted grey coloring on the 3G. If you don't notice that, you're too unaware to be helped. :lol

How the hell does this work? I went to Bing and searched for iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS, and the only cashback thing that popped up were tied to eBay. What do I need to be searching for to get the cashback popup?

question? I am being quoted $699 for 32gb. Would it be cheaper to start other line and close it after 30 days?
You're talking about closing the line, paying the ETF, then using the new iPhone on your existing line? If so, yeah I guess it would be cheaper. $299 + $175 (it is $175 right?) = $474, which is certainly less than $699.

I don't know. With the premium AT&T pays to Apple for iPhone exclusivity, who is to say another carrier wouldn't be pulling the same shit to recoup the investment? I would like to think that wouldn't be the case and Verizon or whoever might get the phone next would be different, but I will take a wait and see approach.

Also, even though AT&T is holding up MMS for a few weeks, I still can't believe it took this long for it to be available on the iphone in the first place.

At the end of the day, I am extremely happy with my phone. I guess that is all that matters.

MMS (the real thing, not a third party app) and tethering does work on AT&T iPhones already with some tweaking/hacking.

They're just coming up with a nice plan to charge us dearly for it. I'm trying the hack tonight.

It's not that obvious on first glance though. They really should have put 3G and 3Gs on the back on the phones.

You'll definitely want to check the contract before you sign it if you do so, I know the old 3G's had you also pay the difference between what you paid and the unsubsidized one if you cancelled too early.

probably should've waited to see how much of a plan discount I get from my school, but whatever, I'll just ummmm...go into debt for 3 years!
:thumbs up:

You should still be able to apply the school discount to the plan, but it won't be retroactive of course.

If you get an iPhone on an existing line do you have to sign one of the iPhone plans? If so, can you cancel the data plan? How difficult is that?

You have to get the data plan yes.

So adding to an existing plan - $10, plus data $30, total of extra $40 a month plus taxes.
I don't think you can remove it.

You have to get the data plan, and you can't remove it. Even if you talk someone into removing it, they've got system sweeps now that puts it back on every so often.

I ended up canceling my order, not because I'm not excited for the 3GS, but because I can't stomach signing another 2 year contract with AT&T at the moment. My OG iPhone still works like a charm and I am happy to keep using it until it finally gives up the ghost. Hopefully it can hold out till Apple opens up the phone to other providers, although I think our options in the US are pretty limited. Verizon, T-Mo, and Sprint all have their fair share of issues. I would just hope that any other carrier would be slightly more reasonable regarding plan prices for the phone.

when you buy the phone they will add iphone data to the line you upgraded, just take the sim card out and put yours in after you leave, put that new sim in the phone it replaced, wait 24 hours and call at&t or go online and remove the iphone data from the upgraded line

Why does it need to be obvious exactly? If you're in the store to pick one up, they'll be clearly labeled as 3G or 3GS. If you've got two iPhones in the home, take a quick glance on the back; if the text is shiny, its the 3GS.

If you mean it's not immediately apparent to strangers that you've got the newest and greatest iPhone, well, I'm glad I stopped caring about that shit back in high school. :P

You have to search for "At&t wireless." Keep searching until you see a link at the top of the list that mentions bing cashback with a little icon.

it's microsoft's search engine. They've been trying to buy users with it for ages! It used to be called "live.com" but now they're going for another one of those classic Microsoft attempts to "attract the young/tech-savvy demographic" by changing the name/design. Though this is by far the best and most amazing deal I've seen with it.

The ebay cashback is what I usually use it for. 10-20% is nice.

Hmm. So I found the link, but Safari keeps telling me the link isn't valid. I hope they haven't pulled it...

Still only an issue with 16GB units, and who wants one of those? 32GB 4 Lyfe, yo.

Ummm.. I'd assume MOST people want one of those- me included? My current iPhone is 8GB. I have no need for 32GB. 16GB is more than enough. Please, enough with the ridiculous Apple apologizing. Just admit its just fucking stupid they couldnt just place '3GS' on the back to make things easier and avoid confusion.

I agree.

but in the end.. I dont even care. I know what my phone is.. and thats all that matters. I don't need it to say "S" to make myself feel better at night.

Is this a parody post of a joke I missed out on, like the Square/honor/Japan thing? It's just hilarious reading it. Like I can't possibly imagine someone getting so irate and argumentative over a missing "S" on the back of a phone.

oh come on, I don't see how no external physical difference between 3G 16gb and 3GS 16gb results in a huge problem. Sure it would have been convenient, but it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

They probably don't want you selling these on or buying second hand, and if you were to sell them on, its not like this opens the door to loads of conmen taking advantage of gullible consumers.

Normal protocol when selling or buying is checking that the item is not a fake, still works, isn't in terrible condition and so on. The seller would just outline if its a 3G or 3GS and this can be easily verified by the buyer.

Apple just shot themselves in the foot.

I don’t know how much the rest of you know about making the plastic backs on cellphones (I’m an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It’s not like over at T-Mobile where you can become successful by slapping a MyFaves logo on the back. If you don't put the "S" on the back of that case, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the iPhone buying public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase the iPhone 3G, nor will they bother with the iPhone 3G S. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Apple has alienated an entire market with this move.

Apple, publicly apologize and add the "S" to the back of the iPhone 3GS case or you can kiss your business goodbye.

Sorry.

After more use, I have to agree with the posters before saying the wifi signal seemed a lot weaker. Can no longer get full bars in my home and felt like it was affecting my AIM app.
AIM kept disconnecting on wifi over and over again, never had that happen before.

Reading/loading email seems slower too. At least, there's more lag from choosing an email, to it showing the body.

EDIT: ^^ :) Still makes me chuckle.

I do get what you mean, and , hey it would be nice to be able to distinguish, but again, I draw the parallel to their Macs. You say the situation is different, and for sure, they are, but my point is, in this regard, does it matter? A lot of the Macs aare difficult to distinguish outside of actual physical features such as an iSight camera, an extra slot or whatever.

Apple has chosen to keep the same design, probably because they like it. With no extra physical differentiation, what else do you really expect? An 'S'? Come on, they don't even put a '3G' on their iPhone 3G. If you really must know, you can look at the model number, which is imprinted in small print.

no offense taken, im a contractor so i can give a fuck :lol :lol . as a cellular provider they're not in my top 10 either, but as a tier 1 provider, they do some good work (they were one for the first in the world to do a large scale MPLS rollout I believe). Besides I work on the IP side (connections to diff companies like nasa, white house etc), so I'm pretty sure the notice was in regards to people dl'ing the firmware and the shitload of potential new users registering over the internet.

Im like the only guy here with an iPhone not on AT&T. I gotta keep it on the hush though in case they can me.
