I went through the reservation process at store.apple.com again and the fine print does indeed say that "pre-authorization" doesn't guarantee a phone. It's still first-come, first-serve. Screw that. I don't have time to be standing around in line. I'm now having the phone shipped to me.
Pre-authorization does not guarantee iPhone availability at an Apple Retail Store. iPhone is sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

Holy fuck the rebel serpent is an awesome case that I had never seen before.

Damn, and my iSkin Solo just came in the mail :lol

Decisions, decisions.
I got a iSkin Solo.

Rebel Serpent looks hideous so I'm glad I got the Solo. Mine should be coming in the next day or so.

Does this mean embargo lifts at 12pm PST?

Stay away from Fring!!!

It's odd, maybe they paid websites off. Most real people say it's not great but websites list it as a great im app. I probably won't bother with it then.

I don't like the back of the RS but I like how the pattern and look of the border of the screen. I just received my iSkin Solo today in black. I don't have a 3G S to put it on yet but the feel of it is great.

It also comes with a bait and switch emusic card, says it is 50 free mp3s but you have to sign up and do the whole cancel-to-opt-out gig, so I thought that was nice at first and now think it's lame of them.

But back to the case, it seems nice, it's tougher than all the other cases I've seen so I'm pleased.

:lol, I just replied in the other thread...

Fring isn't CRAP, per se, just probably crap next to BeeJive. It DOES work, more or less. I just didn't think much of it. A lot of people say it was good, because it was functional enough.

some news about A&TT and MMS:

"AT&T has made some concessions in another cost department.

Sometime later this summer, they will begin to offer a text message plan that includes free MMS messaging. Now that doesn’t sound like much, but if you have been looking forward to extensively using the new camera and the video camera, you also probably planned on heavily abusing the new MMS text messaging function.

A little bit of a consolation prize, but hey, it’s better than nothing."

I'm confused at that wording. AT&T said that the text plans already include MMS, they aren't going to "begin offering" any new kinds of MMS plans for iPhone.

Their official line is that the network is being upgraded for MMS and that it'll be ready late summer. When it is, it'll just work, no new plans, no extra cost, just regular text rates/usage.

I'm starting to think AT&T is run by satan. They fuck something up by delaying MMS while iPhone providers in Senegal are going to have that shit running next week and then brag about not charging for it? After I'm forced to pay $30/month for data and $30/month extra for unlimited texts! j;alskdfja;sjkdf.

At least some people are forcing it through now, and AT&T is ever so generously not charging for it. I can't wait to see what sort of rape tax tethering comes with.

Yeah, switching to AT&T is the part of getting a 3GS I am least looking forward to. :\

Indeed, they are saying that they are going use this opportunity to say that they are going to give you for free - that which they already told you they were going to give you FOR FREE. Its laughable times, and one of the reasons I'm actually considered paying full price for my iPhone just to be out of the contract when the Verizon iPhone shows up. Then I realized that the cancellation fee wasn't actually enough to make me not leave AT&T on 'day one' when Verizon comes to town.

Not sure what all upgrading they have to do since phones already support MMS on their network (including video MMS) at the same resolution that the iPhone will use. Maybe they mean they will actually increase network capacity so that the features will actually work this time.

This is direct from their 3Gs FAQ on the AT&T site:

Will AT&T offer MMS and tethering?
Later this summer, as part of the 3.0 software, AT&T will make multimedia messaging (MMS) available at no extra cost to customers with a text messaging bundle. And, in the future, AT&T will offer tethering capability for iPhone 3G S and iPhone 3G.

There is no real upgrading, it's just the company line that anybody is going to have to state. In fact, MMS will probably work from day one, they just don't want to guarantee it.

I was wondering this myself. I'm upgrading from my 2G, but I got an email saying I needed to go to an Apple store with my iPhone 3GS, driver's license, credit card, etc etc

If that's all I have to do, then that's a trip saved for me!

Even though I hate that AT&T is still charging such an absurd amount of money for the plan, I think I am finally going to give in and get one. My Sprint plan runs until August 2nd but it's a SERO so I'd only double up for a short period and it's only $38 a month. I'll be spending another $50 a month which really is disgusting, but it just offers so much that I suppose I'll get over it in time.

Hell its been working for months at this point, as people in the beta have been pushing MMS messages over their network without issue. Its just several packets of data, I mean how stupid do they think we are?

You won't swap sims. You'll do the activation through iTunes most likely. It will ask you a few questions, you'll answer similar ones to those when you pre-ordered and the 'magic' will happen and in a couple of minutes your phone will be working fine. It will then sync with iTunes and life will continue on.

This has been the process with test hardware during the beta as well as during the previous activation process.

Don't blame the employees, I'll tell you that much, it's what Apple and AT&T agreed to.

WAAAAT? I didn't get that email, I pre-ordered from AT&T BTW if that makes some difference.

I pre-ordered online and choosed my plan for the text msg and stuff like that and will have the new phone shipped to my place, and that was it.

Okay thanks, so I'll be using a new sim then.

So I just created a Yahoo account and migrated my website accounts (user name, notifcation email) to Yahoo as well. I set the rest of the email to be forwarded to Yahoo for anything I forgot.

Sucks that iPhone isn't push for Gmail but I have no problem using Yahoo, I actually like the news & weather integration and the ymail name is better than "Yahoo" in my opinion so atleast I don't have to say "@yahoo" which I think sounds lame.

Did anyone else make this switch for iPhone? Seems kinda wasteful to have the email client check Gmail every 15 minutes in an attempt to make up for it's lack of push.

I made the switch, but it was to MobileMe. I was looking for a way to cut my $120/year web-hosting bill. I only use it for my blog and some personal file hosting. I got a MobileMe subscription off of Amazon for $70, so I'm saving myself $50/year in web hosting and getting push email and syncing of all my data with my Mac :)

Would be pretty ace if I don't have to drive a half hour away just to an Apple store.

how can you people have these amazing phones, and get away with only using 200 text messages? CRAZY

edit: Also so nobody has any experience with iphone docks?

Yeah, I was curious about this. Sounds like AT&T is shipping 3G S with a SIM in it, which means I presume I can have a friend reactivate my EDGE without necessarily coming into an AT&T store.

Why text when you could DM over twitter, e-mail, IM etc?

The EDGE dock is nice, I guess?

Does push use more, the same or less battery than the Gmail check every 15 minutes?

Anyone in here please correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understand it that uses more battery and push uses less. With the "check every 15 minutes" option, the iPhone is basically logging on in the background to the server to see if there are any emails to retrieve. It does this again 15 minutes later. And again. And again. All day long in the background.

With push, the iPhone (or any phone) isn't checking in the background. Instead, when there is an email on the server, it's sent to the iPhone automatically. It tells the iPhone "Hey, take this" whenever there is an email vs the iPhone asking "Anything here for me?" every 15 minutes whether there is an email or not, which is what hurts battery life.

lol yeah, bummer. Anyway I did discover that the dock I was looking at by Sedio tends to hault syncing randomly. It caught my interest because it was black and also allowed the iPhone to be docked despite having a skin, which others (even the official) seem to have trouble with.

A lot of users say they buy the official white dock and just peel back their skins to sync. I do not like this, especially since the bottom lip where the sync-wire cut out is there and is the weakest part of the case. I read a tip that you can use the Universal Dock from the Apple store and by using it as is without any of the plastic fits, iPhones with skins will all fit. It's $49 but the convenience and cool factor (along with allowing me to not peel back my case every day) makes it worth it.

Still wish it was black, though.

Sorry i was more referring to the alarm clock docks/speaker things

Most are expensive, this one looks awesome, but wouldnt mind hearing from a user

Oh I had asked earlier about syncing docks with no response...this is embarrassing...

Hate to break this to you, but Yahoo push is very unreliable. I've found that Gmail set to fetch every 15 min is better and more dependable than Yahoo push.

:lol Fuck! That sucks. Well if I find Yahoo push to suck I'll just opt for Mobile Me, at the prices people were listing from Amazon and eBay it's not a huge deal, just not as good as free.

I purchased the upgrade (3GS) yesterday and still get this message at the order status page:

We have received your order request, and we expect to begin processing it shortly.

How long did it take you guys to have a real update?

Apologize if this has been asked before, but will 3.0 roll out at a certain time slot, or will it hit as the phone is launched around the world?

If you order through AT&T's website, can you choose when you want to pick up your phone? I want to order online to do the Bing Cashback thing, but I'm not actually going to pick it up until the 26th. Can I do this?

Forgive my ignorance, but what's the deal with used iPhones? Are they basically touches with a mic and camera? Do I have to sign up with ATT before I use them? Is it possible to put any sim in?

The only option when I ordered was for home delivery. I suppose you could probably call FedEx and ask them to hold it for you (as if you preorder now it probably won't be delivered until the 21st or so).

I did confirm with AT&T that all iPhone 3G S will be shipped with required signature on receipt.

New rule! Everyone who refers to having ordered/preordered their iPhone, include where you ordered it from in your question, this thread is getting really hard to read.

If I recall correctly, push takes more battery than fetch. It was suggested that if the battery life wasn't great to try using fetch instead of push.

Just got an email that my 3Gs shipped from Apple. :D

Kind of wish I got faster shipping, though. I went with the standard because we were guaranteed a June 19th delivery no matter what... blah.

Ah well, at least it's on it's way!
