I'm slightly shocked that the Pre held its own here.

I was actually more shocked at how long it takes to launch some things in the Pre compared to the 3G and 3GS according to that article. Also the G1 while we're at it. Didn't realize both of those were that much slower at opening core apps.

Go watch that CNET video where it takes nearly TWO MINUTES for the Pre to power on compared to 3GS which powers up in less than 20 seconds.

is it just me or is the speakerphone much louder now? i used my 3G speakerphone practically everyday and it never sounded this loud.

also, the performance of let's golf is like night and day. no more chuggin'!

I heard about the powering on aspect, but that is a bit meaningless to me since I never would power off my phone. It's a neat stat but pointless for my personal habits. How often do you guys turn off your phones?

Why are we talking about the Pre. Its all about Apple in here. :D

Coming from an OG, it's incredibly loud by comparison. Glad to see that got addressed.

Thinking the same thing myself. The iskin revo2 is high on my list for now.

Speck Best Case Scenario, if you like bright, fun color schemes (red+white or black+yellow)

Not iSkin solo. I liked it earlier today. At night I took it off to see that it scratched my chrome border to hell and back.

Watching this now, pretty crazy. I thought the Pre and 3GS were comparable hardware-wise (600mhz and 256mb RAM), yet even the original iPhone 3G smoked it in the power-on comparison.

But like Marty said it's kinda meaningless, I always just leave my phone in standby mode at all times.

My first day with my new iPhone and I am absolutely smitten. Mmmm.

One thing, I got it at 3 or so, had it connected to my computer until 4 or so, and left for work. When I got home at just after 12 it was at 5% or so. The battery life takes a few days to reach peak, right?

mine was fully charged out of the box.... are you charging it?

snakeXs, that doesn't seem right...out of the box mine was already at 50% and it's been climbing steadily to 100% while I've been moving everything over from the OG iPhone.

So, buying tv shows and movies is new to 3.0, right?

Bought me the first episode of Transfomers today just to test it out. soogood

EDIT: Also, does anyone know how many dead pixels is required before Apple will switch out the phone?

One of the main repos. Hosts SBSettings. Add it back

See that's the thing, i uninstalled it by accident. It's not showing up anywhere in my "featured sources" or anything.

K. We'll see tomorrow. It was at a few % when I plugged it in, and it'll be plugged in all night. Hopefully it's more normal tomorrow.

Mine seemed to be, yeah. It was just plugged in for me to add some music and such.

My iPhone 3G takes the same ridiculously long time to cold-boot on many occasions. Considering that the 3G has now been iterated on for 2 years, and the Pre for less than a month, it's not exactly fair to compare what they can do, regardless of hardware speed differences.

Similarly, the Pre app launch times are hardly a dealbreaker when you consider that the primary usage scenario of the Pre is to just leave that stuff running. It's not like having a dialer, calender, and other idle apps open are going to affect battery life.

is it bad to leave the iphone still charging when its full? I tend to charge the iphone overnight but not sure if it will mess up the battery

Taking that long to start up is not normal. I've never seen an iPhone take 2 minutes to start up.

And I don't understand what you mean about what's 'fair' to compare. Shouldn't the newer, faster device (i.e. the Pre vs the 3G) be expected to perform better?

My first iPhone, and definitely happy with it.

My carbon fiber case:

purely for vanity reasons hah hah.

Where may I find the neogaf app?

Just checked. I hard-powered off the iPhone 3G, waited a minute, and turned it back on. I was at the home screen with the device usable and "settled" after 1 minute and 45 seconds.

This is an established phone that does not give me any other problems, runs perfectly quickly, upgraded to OS 3.0, though this boot time has been the norm forever...never thought twice about it.

Saying what's "fair" to compare isn't exactly what I meant to say. I meant to say that the Pre's performance is perfectly acceptable. How often do you actually boot the freaking phone anyway? Is that 2-minute time even the confirmed average? Or was it just a one-time fluke?

The Pre is on faster hardware, sure, but the OS is brand new, designed from the ground-up, with very little time to optimize the system so far. As it's on the market for longer, that boot time will doubtlessly speed up.

I'm not saying your phone doesn't do that. I'm just saying that is not the norm. Hence the reason people are surprised to see the 2 minute boot time.

I get apple loo of death after updating to 3.0. As a developer (and to others too), do you know anything about the watchdog process? Is it something corrupted that I can fix or is it related to a noncompliant 2.2 app? I never had this problem before 3.0.

I have tried a restore from backup (which strangely never resynced my data - it appeared to only reinstall the os - I was always under the impression it had to resync stuff back).

I only think people are surprised because they have to do it so rarely, and because "2 minutes" sounds longer than it actually is. All the people I know with iPhones get the same sort of boot time.

having to reboot the phone isn't necessarily a rare thing.

In any case, myself and all the people I know with iPhones don't get that sort of boot time. And combined with videos like the one in question, i can't help but feel my and their experiences are closer to the average.

Love your avatar. The only neogaf app is a webapp for now: http://secondapps.com/neogaf/ . there is another one in development that should be available in the appstore soon

And though it might be obvious, you can press the + button in Safari and add it to your iPhones home screen, then you can launch it just like a normal app.

I'm so mad...!!!

So I get home.. I synch my iPhone to my iTunes for the first time and it prompts me with a "iPhone detected on iTunes - Want to sync it with your old iPod" or something like that..

Not paying attention or guess I didn't understand how it was worded.. I ended up hitting yes. It then took my iPod Touch items and synced over my iPhone. Thus killing all of my contacts on my phone and I had already wiped my Blackberry since I sold it earlier that day.

SIGH!!!

I have no idea why it would even give me the prompt to sync my iPod ontop of my iPhone.. fucking retarded =[

Oh well.. got all of it back to square 1 minus the contacts.. I still have a backup of my blackberry on my computer and I'm gonna restore my blackberry contacts onto my friends Blackberry Storm and just manually grab numbers from it then he can restore back to his contacts..

SIGH

Created a quick video and put it up on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ha3mwdsQ7QQ

In retrospect, I should be taking videos in landscape mode vs. portrait. Looks much better on the phone then it does in YT (the phone mentions that it's compressing the video before it sends it off to YT), but it's certainly better than what Cycorder offers.

Hopefully lots of people get this phone so street brawls and embarrassing events can be captured in better clarity :D
Wow, the quality is quite impressive.

You don't need one. It's hard as fuck to scratch glass.

On that note, I am stunned at whatever magic voodoo Apple did to the glass. FI have to look for fingerprints, and my paws aren't always surgeon levels of clean when I'm tending bar.

I wish the chrome around the screen was as strong as the screen. The screen won't scratch but a little dust in your case and bam scratches in the chrome.

It doesn't kill me, it's covered anyway, but lame, should be tougher.
