So i finally bit the bullet and purchased a 16gb iphone 3gs. With what little time i've had with it i already enjoy it more than my blackberry. For veterans is 6gb a month in data more than enough for regular email and downloads?

Should be enough. Unless you have tethering as an option and intend to use it regularly, in which case maybe not. Even in that scenario I've only topped 6GB once and not come close any other time besides that...

also you only use data when you are currently surfing webpages and using maps. none of this runs in the background and eats away at your data right?

Like the other dude said, if you tether and download a lot of shit on the road then yeah. Otherwise hell no.

When you're in sleep no data is being sent/received unless you've got push/notifications on. There might be a small bit of data being used when your phone is switching from Edge/3G/Wifi and the like...nothing to worry about.

6gigs is A LOT. You could burn through that downloading movies and tv shows from the phone, but chances are small IMO.

(Assuming he is talking about Canada...doesn't most of the rest of the world have unlimited data plans?)

Can you even do that though? Apps/podcasts are still limited to 10MB. I think my lifetime 3G data usage is still under 1GB. Tethering could definitely amp that up, but unless we can download movies/tv eps over 3G (just haven't tried yet) then hitting 500MB let alone 6 gigs seems pretty hard.

The real pressure is that the Rogers 6GB plan can't be bought once august hits, so it's probably wise to gamble on it and then switch down based on need later.

So the $300.00+ that I paid for my 32GB iPhone has been refunded to my account. What do you think happened? I didn't get an email or anything, and my order is still pending.

Anyone?

Is it just me or does double click on the phone now take you to the iPod app on the iPhone, rather than just bring up the miniplayer (unless a song is playing)?

I thought previously, you could double click while running an app to bring up the mini player and play your own music. Double clicking an app now quits the app and loads the iPod.

:/

It used to be the trick to getting your music playing on some apps.

Fortunately, clicking the remote still starts the last thing playing.

BTW, Apple's new version of the Remote app is excellent for the Apple TV (after the software update). Way better than the little remote that came with the thing.

Oh My God! Using the iPhone as a remote is soooooo good. I am almost speechless at how sweet it is.

You can change the double click function in the settings.

I know what you're referring to and I vaguely recall getting the mini view appear even when music wasn't playing, but i'm not sure it was ever defined behavior.

I really hate the implementation of that thing. Double tap to pause. Close alert. Double tap to play. "HOLY CRAP it quit my app". It's unnecessarily jarring.

I think the solution is a full page sheet view (instead of the alert window) that would be laid over any app without closing it. That way a user can have enough interface to pick music out if nothing is playing, without necessitating a quit of the current app.

no, double clicking the home when a song isnt playing depends on how long its been. if the song was just recently paused, double clicking will bring up the mini player. the trick to playing music in all apps is this:

open application
turn off phone
turn on phone
double tap and press play
slide to unlock

u should be in ur app with the song playing

I disagree. No matter how long ago I paused (and closed the miniplayer), the double click will always open up the iPod app. Your method to play music in any app does, however, work.

Juice: I just checked (I haven't updated my touch to 3.0 - I don't really see the point), and double-clicking does indeed open the miniplayer regardless of where you are. I liked that.

Assuming it passes whatever cert. Apple has, what's the average turnaround rate for submission -> on the App. Store?

I have a feeling te Favorites List bug isn't fixed though as it sounded like they were still trying to figure that out the last I heard.

Why wouldn't they get push? It's an protocol part of iPhone 3.0. I would think all the iPods would get push too. Unless I have it wrong.

so far i haven't heard of any 2g unlocked owners have push working properly yet. idk what the deal is but it's not working for us yet :(

:lol Instapaper 2.0 just came out after about 4 months in update hell, i think that's the record. So there are only two apps with push notification support available right now? When's AP supposed to drop?

Well this is certainly a way to take advantage of jailbreaking your phone...

Who would've thought it works exactly like you would do it on any computer? Instead of giving us some smarmy retort why not take the two seconds to try it for yourself? It's not like we omitted how on purpose, I'd say it's fairly obvious.

Ooh bitch...

Instapaper's 2.0 features (folders!) and sale price ($5!) pushed me over the edge. I love the site. I've only been using the iPhone app for a week or so (just found out it exists). I thought $10 was a little much for the app, but $5 is about right so I bit the bullet. It's probably more useful for iPod Touch users, as it will let them read articles w/o an internet connection, but it's pretty useful on the iPhone as well.

My iphone is 2G, just recently jailbroken but not unlocked. The push works flawlessly, I use beejive with push turned on, email (yahoo), and even some text apps use push as well fairly nicely. Not sure if its just an "unlocked" thing but mine works just fine on EDGE as good as on wifi.

Hey does anyone know if you can change the sound for when getting a new txt message? I only see a limited set of sounds, and I wanted to add something to it, but not sure if you can.

Any ideas?

You can't add to the alert sounds, unfortunately. You select from their couple choices or have nothing. :\

for those about to upgrade from a jailbroken 2.2 3g to a jailbroken 3.0, you have to update your itunes to 8.2 and phone to a virgin 3.0 first, otherwise you're in for a world of reboots and DFU button presses.

oy. this has been a hassle so far.

So a friend asked me to update his OG, jailbroken, unlocked 1.x phone. Is it possible to snazz him up with 3.0 and have it still be JB and unlocked?

yep, search google - there are tons of guides for this.

I got my switcheasy Colors cases today in the mail; I fucking love them. I don't think they'll provide the same drop protection as the Serpent and the Capsule Rebel, but wow the quality is fantastic and the material isn't that cheap silicon that feels like it constantly has a fine layer of dirt on it. Switcheasy FTW.

(I purchased Milk(White) and Crimson(Red)

So, i've had a sony erricsson phone my whole life, never really wanted to leave them cause every phone ive ever had has been solid and couldnt be destroyed no matter how many times I dropped them on the floor or in water, but I guess its time.

Im due for an upgrade / contract renewal and with the iphone 3G at $99 Im about to bite.

Complete iphone and apple newb, few quick q's.

How is the texting on this phone? Im used to lightning fast t9 popping the phone out, texting bam back in pocket, is the iphones qwerty touchscreen quick? or clunky and slow as far as response time.

Any deals out there to make it cheaper than $99? (live.com cash back, rebates, etc)

Do I really have to add on a data plan? I guess ill start using the internet a shit ton now (used to just use gmail/facebook on break at work, was paying for 5mb a month)

Ive read that they (ATT) are having MMS problems with iphone? Is this true?

Thats probably it, maybe more after I get home from work, thx.

I need a case that does as little as possible, but successfully adds enough friction so as to prevent the phone from slipping out of my pocket when I sit down.

I hate, hate, hate iPhones with cases, but I'm about to be traveling for two weeks and can't afford to lose it. Recommendations?

If you have enough money to pay for the iPhone monthly subscription, you have no business buying only an iPhone 3G. If you like *anything* to be lightning fast, you're going to be buying the 3G S.

Yea, Apples approval process is pretty lame. Twitteriffic submitted a fix for the exact same bug and got approved on the very same day just because they knew somebody at Apple to prioritize them. Not really fair to other competitors like Tweetie who are still waiting for the same bug to be fixed 2 weeks later.

I don't see the need to look over every little point update either. It sucks for the users to have to wait 2 weeks for somethig that was fixed in a day, and it sucks for the developers who get 1 star reviews during that time period too.

There should at least be some kinda system where the developers can pay a fee (maybe limited to like 3 uses per year) where they get priority in being approved when it comes to crucial bug updates.

I used to use a SE w810 before the 3G. I'm as fast as I used to be, maybe faster, though I'm not a total speed demon on texts. It's an on-screen keyboard, not t9, but it has pretty good word prediction and it's as fast as you can type, really; it all gets recorded. I type emails all the time. With 3.0 you can now type other texts while one is sending, too.
