Since jailbreaking and installing SBSettings I've lost the part of the settings screen which allows you to add or change email settings. Anyone know where it is or how I can get it back? Thanks.

Uninstall supreme preferences, a lot of people were having issues with it. That might be causing the missing mail preferences.

As I understand it, Supreme Preferences is part of Winterboard now on the 3.0 iphone OS. Do I need to uninstall Winterboard to get my email settings back?

EDIT: Actually, it just says it's for Winterboard and doesn't say it's part of the package. When I find Supreme Preferences on Cydia though, it says it's not installed on my phone. Weird. Anyone know how I can remove it?

So under Cydia, even if you look at all of your currently installed packages, you don't see it there?

Dunno if this has ever happened to anybody else, but this was bizarre:

Got an iPhone 3G. Never been jailbroken. Bought sealed at an AT&T store about 6 months ago.

Today, it stops giving me signal, only for the carrier/signal strength indicator to say T-Mobile. Visual voicemail also stopped working.

It just happened about an hour ago and my curiosity is preventing me from doing anything about it yet. Has anyone else had this glitch?

Take some screens of it, Aris.

And I'm with the camp that likes to surf portrait mode and finds it impossible and annoying in bed.

nope. The only way I find it in Cydia is if I do a search and then it gives me the option to install, not remove.

WTF? Damn I feel like a dumbass for not trying this earlier. Web app is truly awesome.

You did pay your bill right? ;)

It’s difficult to get accurate data on how many customers have jailbroken their iPhones. But based on the number of unique device identifiers tracked on his server, Freeman claims that about 4 million, or 10 percent of the 40 million iPhone and iPod Touch owners to date, have installed Cydia. On a recent day, he said 470,000 people were connecting to the Cydia store, up from 350,000 per day just a few months ago. Among many free apps, there are also 15 paid apps in Cydia, and the store has earned $220,000 in overall sales in just five months.

“People are so annoyed by Apple and their shit, and if you give them opportunity to go around it, then they’ll even pay for it,” said Kim Streich, a developer whose app 3G Unrestrictor earned $19,000 in sales in just two weeks through Cydia.

I just received a refreshed Iphone 3G, and it's total bull crap.

I've been trying for 3 hours now to sync the damn thing with my computer, and I've been successful only once. And, that time, it crashed when I tried to update to 3.0.1 or something.

And now, the damn thing just won't sync with anything, and I've plugged it EVERYWHERE on my damn computer.

Yeah, error 13 and 1604. What the hell.

I tried looking up some solutions, and found a thread which had two answers that were something along the lines of:

"I had this problem! I solved it by this: [link]"

And in both cases, the link went to out of date sites. :/

Reinstall and if it still doesn't work get an appointment with Apple and get a new one (assuming it is under warranty).

I didn't get it at Apple, it was a refreshed by Fido (in Canada).

The thing is, it worked just fine before that damn 3.0.1 update of bullshit.

Have you tried putting your phone in DFU mode then updating your firmware?
You also might want to try uninstalling then reinstalling iTunes.

... I'm in DFU mode and Itunes says error 2005. And I can't seem to get out of DFU mode.

Edit : It really seems to be the 3.0.1 update that's causing a problem. When it's not Error 13, it's always 1604. Is there a way to manually install the software?

Littleberu said:
*sigh*

I'm redownloading Itunes to see if it'll work. I doubt it. It seems to be related to my USB port or something. I don't really know.

It might. Check to see if your 3.0.1 firmware was downloaded correctly too.

Also, don't mixup dfu restore mode for standard restore.

I was in DFU for a while, and Itunes gave me the 2005 error. So I came back to the Restore.

Anyway, it's going in DFU mode fine during the Restore, it just always pop up as Error 1604 after a while.

Yeah, I just noticed that.

Can't do my E-mail, Messages, Photos, and something else methinks.

I really don't need to use any of those, but I'd like to know where they went.

Edit: NM, just turned off extended preferences and it showed up.

RE: Acceleromter disliking - I just don't get why this was never brought up, or never added. Obviously it's not that hard to implement, and it does nothing but give me a little more pleasure while surfing the net in bed. Before, you have to lay on your back, and I don't like doing that. Now I can lay sideways, and still have it in portrait mode, so even if it is horizontal (Like I'm laying down) it's actually not.

And to the pic at the top of the page, having your hand hold your head up is comfortable for about three seconds, resting my head on a pillow is the only solution.

Three stupid questions:

The App Store is different for every country, right? Is there a way to download apps from another app store? Mine (spanish) is total crap :(

Is there a birthday reminder in the OS 3.0? If not, what app do you recommend me for this task? I've seen IBirthday, but it doesn't have an alarm and you have to check the app daily to see if there's any birthday coming soon.

In OS 2.0 there was a reminder when the battery reached 10%, but in 3.0 it isn't. Is there a way to set this reminder in 3.0?

Btw, not jailbroken here, i think it's obvious :P Thanks in advance!

No prob. The heart container background is about 16 images total (for different levels of battery charge). I'll share everything once I'm finished.

Another brief update - after *much* messing around (I'm no natural at this), here's the new dialpad:

The highlighted number (5) is what it looks like when you press each button.

Should I wait for OS 3.1 to jailbreak? If so, how long of an estimated wait am I looking at? No real rush, I'm just curious.

Also, if someone could give me a run down of the risks associated that would be great. :D

why would you wait? ive been on 3.0 jailbroken since day 1 and its great.

risk....nothing. everything (unless you do something really crazy) is reversible. if you dont like it you can just restore and go back to normal.

Cris, can you give me a little help here? I've messed around with the iPhone to replace the shitty carrier logo into a real graphic logo but I haven't suceeded so far.

I've SSH'd into the phone and replaced the necessary png's but no dice. Do I need to use some weird kind of PNG or something? Seeing how I can't read on the computer the ones I extract from the iPhone...

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Am I crazy or did the App Store have push updates? I coulda swore I used to get a badge for app updates, but now I don't, they only show if I launch the app store.

Nope, don't think it was ever pushed. There were probably just a few times where you opened the store, got sidetracked with something else, forgot about it, and then noticed the badge and were like "huh?"

I also seem to remember hearing back in the day that if you synced to iTunes and there were app updates, the badge would update on your phone as well, but I never tested that to see if that was the case.

I'm not sure if it's push. It sometimes just checks, I think.

I have an iPod touch that I never use, it just sits there. Sometimes I check it, and it has badges on the appstore.

I need help people.

I'm about to ask a friend of mine who lives in the US to send me two 3GS units (16GB), since the ones sold locally have insane prices ($1200). Clearly, I'm a new adopter who's not interested in AT&T's contract plans. So what's the best way to pull this off at the lowest possible price?

Should buy them with contracts then jailbreak them?
Are there any officially unlocked iPhones in the US?
If there are other (better?) suggestions that some of you can offer, please do. I'd really appreciate it.

My eyes are tired from googling around and reading all the fine prints.

A factory unlocked 3GS would be the ideal choice, problem is it's only available in selected countries (Italy, France, New Zealand, etc.) and usually more expensive. I believe in Hong Kong it is only 705 USD though, so that one would be your best option.

Now, if you're stuck with only US iphones as an option and you're wealthy enough to pay for a contract, then by all means go for it as an officially activated phone currently has one important advantage over hacktivated phones: push support. This issue doesn't seem to be going to be solved by the Dev-Team any time soon since the only way to get push working properly is by using valid unique certificates, which are only generated through proper activation.

Where are you from? In the US, I understand the iPhone 16GB is close to US$700, plus tax of around US$70 (depending on where your friends are). That's the non-contract price. And they're locked. Not sure what the penalties are for contract and then breaking them, but that is a hassle for your friend.

I have a NZ iPhone 3G, properly unlocked and non jailbroken - I can just update whenever and not have to wait for an update from the JB dev team, so I guess that's an advantage, but also I can use any carrier without messing about.

Oi, I did NOT know that there are select countries that offer the officially unlocked iPhone. It would be hard to get snag any of those, especially the one from HK. :\

That's something I haven't looked into, how much would that contract cost? give me the best plan for someone with the intention of jailbreaking.

I'm from Saudi Arabia. A few days ago I found an officially unlocked iPhone, a major provider started distributing them recently, for a whopping $1200 (as I stated earlier). Although I think this goes for most officially unlocked iPhones, as some of you mentioned.

My friend, by the way, lives in Toledo, Ohio. I think he's my best option at the moment (I'm in dire need of a mobile as soon as possible).

... So, phone+contract>jailbreak? how much would that cost?

Well, I'm not in the US, but I would assume any AT&T contract option will tie you over 1-2 years, and that definitely will amount more than the 1200 USD unlocked phone offer, so yeah you'd have to be pretty fucking rich to afford a plan you'll never ever use :lol

I don't think that's the whole story. You can opt out of the contract by buying a noncontract, non-subsidized phone, or by reneging on your contract (probably amounts to the same price). I think both methods will require a bit more work from your friend. For example, if I'm lead to believe correctly, you can cancel your contract for a penalty (something like $300), but only after one month. I'm not sure.

All the phone regulations, plans, ways around are super confusing in the US. You can't even ask the employees as you get all sorts of stories. When I was shopping around, one AT&T guy told me that I could get a plan, but reneg on my contract and not pay the penalty by saying that I'm going back overseas.

Jinfash said:

If you can afford a factory unlocked iphone, go for it without hesitation, they're a blessing. Else, go for the cheaper US iphone.

Do you have an ipod touch lying around by any chance? You could extract its certificates and inject them into the hacktivated iphone, effectively solving the push issue I described in my previous post (naturally don't expect to use the same push apps on your ipod touch though).

Oh, that's definitely an option (that's how I got mine) it's just that he'd end up with a non-activated phone. The other opt-out contract options you mention are definitely worth exploring though.

i would really try to get an officially unlocked phone from a country that sells them. you'll pay a couple hundred more than a non-contract US locked phone (which are priced at 700 USD for 16 GB, 800USD for 32GB) but you won't have to deal with jailbreaking or unlocking issues.

for example, you could update to the latest firmwares without worrying about it disabling the unlock. You get full push notification support, no hack workarounds.

despite what some people will say, jailbreaking can potentially result in flakiness in the phone. if you want the least hassle, get one from HK or or the other countries that sell them factory unlocked.

It's what I would suggest. Unless you want to Jailbreak your iPhone anyway.

I wanted the iPhone for the exact reason that it is intuitive, elegant, and simple. Jailbreaking potentially takes that away.

Problem is: there is no ready replacement for an imported factory unlocked iPhone. If something goes wrong and you have to take it in for repairs, or get it switched, you'll be well getting back a locked down version--hopefully there is an Apple Store in Saudi Arabia to serve you. If you aren't using a contract with the official carrier then it's back to jailbreaking and, assuming Apple hasn't already released updates for the baseband, unlocking. I guess the price for the imported factory unlocked one comes to about the same price as one bought in Saudi Arabia so it'll be worth the shot but make sure you know what options are available if you have to get a replacement.

that's true but the odds of something going wrong with the phone are pretty low. single digit percentages, here.

I would say it's worth it to get the unlocked one if he can get it for less than the 1200 he would be paying locally for (what i assume) is a locked phone.

IF something goes wrong then he gets a locked replacement it would still work on his network just fine, if it's being sold legally from a carrier. his ability to use the phone is not impeded and he still gets a fully functioning replacement.

what if he brings in a jailbroken, unlocked phone in for repairs and gets denied service because it's unlocked? oops.

essentially, if the factory unlocked phone is less than 1200, get it. if its more than 1200, then it doesn't really benefit anyone.

getting a US locked phone for 700 might save some cash but it will require a hack unlock to get to work. I wouldn't advise that since its still damn expensive but loses some convenience.

The official locked phone maybe even cheaper - at which stage I wonder he doesn't just buy the proper one there. Is it the contract?

Thanks for all the help people, right now I think I have a clear idea about the situation. I'm gonna weigh in the possibilities, I'll look for a way to get one from HK, even consider the $1200 officially unlocked iPhone that is sold locally.

Edit: Thanks for for the link Doc, I'll definitely look into that.
