Ok, take this with a grain of salt, but a poster over at Howard Forums claims to have a buddy that works Apple and he let slip some upcoming plans by Apple for the iPhone. If these are true, we're in for a treat:

Interesting stuff. There is a lot in there to like, but again take this with a grain of salt.

That was pulled from AppleInsider's page for having no credible source.. I'd try a bucket of salt :lol

Though it would be amazing if they were true

Yeah, sounds like a fanboy with list to me. Everything is either obvious (iChat) or totally out of left field (full file browser w/ cover flow).

My phone has this battery life as well. I had about 3 hours and 10 minutes with 2 days of standby and less than 10% battery life, but I used it mostly for surfing the web and listening to music.

I'm guessing email/browsing the web uses a considerable amount of power.

The guy in question used his phone for talking 60% of the time...so I'm guessing he had it close to his ear, which means the screen is turned off.

Do you have Wi Fi on? I think you have a crap battery as well.

Yeah. A random guy in a forum posting stuff like that is pretty hard to trust, I agree. It's a nice list though to be sure. Most of those things are on my list of things I'd like to see, and I was actually talking to a friend a few days ago about being able to put Keynote files on the iPhone and using it with a special dock for doing presentations.

I'll be happy if the iChat and Ringtones show up in a quick fashion though.

Sometimes yes, but mostly just EDGE when I'm out and about.

I don't think I have a crap battery.

The battery only lasts like 10 days on standby. So leaving it in standby for 2 days eats up 20% of the battery alone.

So much potential with this device. The software'll get better thanks to a lot of the crash reports that are being submitted automatically through iTunes. Adding iChat is just about the last thing that'll complete the package for me...it's the one thing I use regularly that isn't on the phone already. Ringtones and Wifi music/photo sharing would be sweet too.

Kinda surprised they haven't made any announcements since launch day. No press releases from Apple since June 28.

I'm a little surprised that they haven't had a press release touting sales yet too, but then again, that's not really Apple's style. The only time I've seen them mention iPod sales are in quarterly reports and other financial statements.

Also, I do think it's a little early for an update. Remember, most of us will only have had them for two weeks today. I've seen people around the web asking for updates, and they will come, but two weeks into a product's life cycle is a pretty short period to expect updates. I'm sure Apple will have something in the works before too long though.

Well, I am convinced there is an issue with mine, so I'm taking it in.

Bit O-T -- I switched my number from Sprint when I bought the iPhone. So, I log onto Sprint's website to pay my bill as I always do... and it says I must contact an account administrator -- won't let me access the page. So I've called up Sprint's customer service and I've been on hold for....an hour. I really don't know what the etiquette is with this, but the bill is due the 18th and I want to make sure I've paid it on time. But they won't let me pay it. Oy.

Anyway I just want to tell them the reason I'm leaving them. A) iPhone, and B), when I called their customer service they left me on hold for a hour-plus even though at the start of the call they said 20 minutes.

Perhaps a battery saving tip. Seems to be working great so far for me today. Last night I charged the iPhone up fully, on the included dock by the way. Until now I've been charging it on an iPod clock radio that seems to have worked fine. Anyway, before I left home this morning I switched my e-mail from checking every 15 minutes to ever hour. So far today my usage stats say 1.5 hours of use and my battery is barely off full. I mean you can hardly even tell it's not full by looking at it.

In that hour and a half of use, I've done e-mail and some light surfing, and some searching on YouTube but didn't watch anything. This was mostly on WiFi, but some on EDGE as well.I also used Google Maps to navigate to a location here in town, and took one brief phone call. So, a nice mix, with WiFi still active, and it seems like I'm getting improved battery life already.

The only two things that have changed are that I charged it from the included dock and I switched the Check Mail option to an hour. I doubt the dock plays much into it, but it seems that the checking mail things has.

jinx, thanks for the tips on loading pages. Stopping them early really does the trick and prevents either the browser or the iPod from crashing. It also saves times.

My check mail is set to manual, but I do check it somewhat often.

Alos, I charged it last night and right off the cradle usage was at 2 hours. ??? In an hour of use (mainly email reading) I am down to about 70%.

Are you sure your battery is really that low? Apparently, there is a known issue reguarding the UI simply showing the wrong charge level on some units. Check it out:

http://www.macrumors.com/iphone/2007/07/12/iphone-battery-charge-issues/

So, we contacted Apple PR about this, and they told us that "Your battery is fully charged, but the UI (User Interface) is just not correctly reflecting this. We expect to fix this in a software update."

You know I noticed something similar - I switched my 3 mail accounts from every hour to every 30 minutes yesterday and woke up this morning to see the battery had gone from 80-20% overnight (but then I plugged in and the battery was fully charged within the hour, which seemed suspicious.) I almost think setting it to every hour does something more than just change the frequency .

From what I understand, they're swapping them out without any issues. You definitely have the issue they spoke about in that post I made yesterday. Apple says it will be fixed in the next firmware upgrade, but I wouldn't want to wait for that either. Take it in and join the rest of us with decent battery life. :D

Yeah, I'm checking two accounts, and it seems to be much better for me to have it check every hour. My current usage is 1 hour 45 minutes, 10 hours 2 minutes of standby, and I swear that my battery is still at 90% full.

Yup, I started doing this recently too and it helps a lot. Safari always loads 80% of the page and then takes forever to load the other 20% but the thing is you can already browse and see everything on the site already. Not sure what Safari is doing then...

If I had to take a guess: The junk which is cluttering up the sides of most pages is served from lots of different computers. I suspect there is a limit on how many network threads it can use at at time, so it loads the main page quickly and then spins its wheels on the myriad ads, links, banners, etc. for a long time. (It also doesn't help that each ad server has tons of ads, meaning that it will take a long time for a cache to be built.)

Glad the tip is helping people out, though...

All the more reason apple should allow third party development on the actual phone.. ad-blockers would be a nice thing to have on mobile safari..

Supposedly you can now add custom ringtones. It's a long process though that involves 18+ steps to do.

http://www.hacktheiphone.com/iphone_ringtone_installation.html

Not sure if I'm going to try it just yet. I'm ok with the default ringtones and I can wait for Apple to activate the feature.

I saw this this morning, and thought exactly the same thing. I can wait fro Apple to implement it. Especially when the instructions say that it might "brick" your iPhone.

Did the ringtone hack. Thing is only getting one song working for some reason. I don't know why I mean I have the files in the folder where they are supposed to be but one only plays...

Ah well, thank god it's the best one(What is a Booty - Del) :D

some issues with a hacked iphone.

Can't access youtube over wifi, and can't use google maps to give me directions.

Are there some apps that still require an EDGE connection for part of their service - perhaps some kind of online validation?

No idea on why they would quit working, but that's why I don't want to try the hacks. You never know what you might break in the process. I can wait for Apple to hand over the ringtones.

OMG, Apple is going to activate the feature available in every cell phone ranging from $ 50 to 500!

Don't get me wrong, I love apple, I own a Macbook Pro, but people splooging over getting custom ringtones in iphone is just :lol

Who is "Splooging"? We all knew this was coming before the thing was released. We knew it way back when it was announced. There are a few details we're waiting to have filled in, but no on is "splooging" over this. We're just patiently waiting to see what Apple has to offer.

Well, my phone is hacked in that I can upload ringtones to it.. I have it activated with AT&T service, so all of my apps and such work over edge and wifi.

I think he is talking about a hacked phone without AT&T...

But yeah, I did mine and it's not like you replace the firmaware or anything at all. All you do is have the ability to put files in folders in the phone that you can't access using the given method.

And if anything went wrong, you can always restore it in iTunes and it goes back to normal. In worst case scenario just use the warranty at an Apple Store to get a brand new one.

yeah, hacked no at&t. I wanted it fully activated but the at&t clerk just said to go home and use itunes. Said there was a little prepaid icon to click on. There isn't. Now i'm in the uk so can't visit a store. No idea why i can't pay over the phone or net (all i need is a $500 deposit to skip the credit check and therefore not need a ssn)
oh well

Now, if only those other phones could activate a fast touchscreen/finger-based UI, excellent build quality, and a high level of user friendliness...

Odd, Youtube worked over WiFi when I took out my SIM. Take it out and check the results.

As expected, they simply "hard reset" it with the lock and home buttons, despite me doing the full SW restore. It did seem to possibly do something to the PMU, but more testing will tell. So perhaps it is a SW issue as well.

I always want to tell these people I'm an IT guy but don't want to come across as presumptuous...

Hmm... I had been reading that they were swapping out the phones. Hope that works for you though. Give us updates.

I used Handbrake over the weekend to rip a couple of DVD's to my iPhone. They turned out really well after messing with the settings and ripping several times to find a nice balance between quality and file size. Very cool stuff. I'm going to load up some movies on it before I head out on my next trip somewhere.

Wow! Impressive. Is that a lot of listening to music? I found over the weekend that my "Usage Stats" looked a lot more impressive after I had used it to listen to some music and watch a video on the iPhone. Far less battery intensive tasks than surfing over WiFi. :lol

I heard that too. No dice. I'll be sure to complain in this thread if it still is poor. :D

That may have been part of my issue- I was checking email incessantly, from 4 different account.

I always wondered, can you upload pictures at all through Photobucket or any other host with the iPhone? I'm going to assume the answer is no.
Using a web form, no. The iPhone has no concept of user accessible local storage. However, if you can add photos to your library by sending an email, then yes. I don't know about Photobucket but with Flickr, you can email photos to a special email address and they will get added to your Flickr library. Same with several other "moblog" compatible hosts.

BTW, when you email a photos with the iPhone it attaches a resized, email friendly version of the photo and not the original megapixel sized one.

Better than nothing I guess. I was wondering because I'm prolly gonna use it for mobile GAF browsing and sometimes I load images.

It was a good mix of browsing Safari over wi-fi and iPod features.

Currently on the phone with Cingular trying to activate my iPhone as a GoPhone.

Would a restore through Itunes delete all my contacts?

Was messing around with system UI sound files replacin some like the SMS received with the item get sound from Metroid :D but I think I might have actually replaced another file on accident... So I would just rather restart the whole thing just in case but I would like to know if all my contacts are going to get erased and if there is a way to back them up...

Sync the phone with your computer before doing the restore.

Kung Fu Jedi said:
Doesn't it do it automatically when you sync? I was under the impression that it did.
Ugh. I just did sync with Outlook in the Sync iPhone part of iTunes... and yeah, replaced all my contacts with one that was in Outlook T_T.

So I guess it doesn't matter anymore. Time to get phone numbers from everyone...

Why are people so gung ho to hack their iPhones? Do custom ringtones matter that much, especially when it is known to be coming in an update?
