I was all set to go out and buy an iPhone today when I had to go and start reading about the Palm Centro - stupid websites. :lol

It runs Palm Garnet. Again. Do not want.

For $100 I might buy one as a backup phone or something, but Garnet? Ugh.

I really miss my iPhone. Too bad a Japanese release is far off, likely only a few months before I go back home. :/
Could be worse, you could live in Canada, where we're apparently NEVER getting it.
In case Canadians hadn't heard yet, all talks between Apple and Rogers have broken down, and it's likely because Rogers Wireless, and the Canadian cellular provider market in general, for being greedy little d-bags and not giving us the same data plan you can get with AT&T in the US for under $300. If you'll excuse me, I have an angry letter to write to the CRTC.

Oh God, I'm such a consumer whore, the damn thing is sitting unopened on my bed gloating at me at my failure to have any self control whatsoever. I guess I should call Verizon and actually make sure I'm no longer in my contract period . . . yeah, yeah, probably should have done that first.

yeah, you'd have to be pretty damn desperate to buy something running palm os.

Don't worry, you did the right thing...

How best do I test it to make sure I didn't get a gimp screen or anything?

I guess I'm one of the few who actually doesn't dislike the Garnet OS, I find it has its charms and is functional without being too terribly flashy. Eh, helps that the first handheld device I ever tried was a Palm I guess - even though I didn't own it long, my life wasn't complicated enough for a PDA at the time.

Still, lack of WiFi and the better internet browsing capabilities of the iPhone put it over the top for me, and being out of contract with Verizon made it more sensible to go ahead and get the phone rather than pay nearly the same amount for an iPod Touch.

Congratulations on purchasing the best piece of consumer electronics in the North American market.

i've gotta say... i'm loving the 1.1.1 update -- the double tap home button is a godsend for me since i listen to songs in my car using the iphone. instead of having to navigate through the ipod menu, a quick double tap and i can skip tracks, even with the phone in locked mode nonetheless. 3rd party hacking sounds great, but if apple can keep up with these legit little additions, i'll be very happy.

That is one of my favorite new features, as well as the double tapping spacebar for a period.

And the volume enhancements were really needed too.

yeah I'll just go ahead and upgrade the firmware. The period using space will itself be a godsend as this post made from the phone proves :lol

I remember all the Canadians at my college were cocky ass bastards about how Canada was so pro-consumer in contrast to America.

With the new holy-shit-wtf Canadian DMCA rules and this mobile data fiasco, I'd find Canada wholly unliveable. Fuck, if I take another vacation there, I'll have to leave my damn iPhone at home.

Volume, Double-Tapping, and getting straight to iPod settings when music is playing were all CRITICAL parts of my upgrading.

once I realized that the encrypted image pretty much meant that Apple has nipped the firmware wars in the bud immediately, I figured I didn't want to play this game like I have with PSP. I want the browser updates, the phone updates, etc. more than I want to play Zork.

I've been very happy with the 1.1.1 update as well, and if Apple continues to make those kinds of updates in the future, the iPhone is going to continue to evolve into an even better product.

I do hope they open it up for third party apps in the future though.

Noob question over here. Let's say I have 10 songs in my iTunes music folder. How do I get 5 of them over to my iPhone without bringing over all 10? I've tried creating new playlists and bringing over just the checked playlist, but the songs don't seem to transfer. Can anyone give me a step by step way to do this, or point me to a website that explains it? BTW, assume all 10 songs are imported into iTunes already.

i just hope someone finds a way to get Lotus Notes integration on it :/

I agree with this, and unlike my PSP, this is something I have to use everyday as it is my primary phone. The hacked software is quite cool, but for now at least I would rather follow the firmware updates.

So the scuttlebutt making the rounds is that Apple is going to eventually allow 3rd party apps, but on Apple's terms. The theory is that they will use the iTunes store to sell apps and games, like they do for iPod games now. Authorized licensed software with Apple getting their cut.

Personally, I'm fine with this strategy. What does everyone else think?

ahahahahahahahaha no. Apps shouldn't need to be approved to be used.

The phone is a closed system. Apple has now proven they want it to stay a closed system. It's no different than XBLM or PSN. Apple certifies that the app won't crash the phone and provides the distribution method, third parties get a way to sell software, and customers get their apps.

It's really just an extension of what Apple does with the iTunes store now. I wouldn't mind buying regular desktop software this way. Like Steam for software.

I'm fine with it. As long as the apps are reasonably priced and official / bug tested, bring it on. The iPod Touch could benefit from that as well.

Yeah, I don't mind Apple having to approve the apps, particularly since I think it will be crucial for 3rd party apps to have proper UI integration into the device to make the experience better.

I just wish they'd get around to adding some of the more fundamental things that are missing from the phone on a faster basis - voice dialing I'm looking at you, I'm in my car ALOT and voice dialing over my bluetooth headset is crucial.

Yet, that system locks out a lot of potential cool apps. If Flickr decides they don't want to produce an iPhone app, is Apple going to approve someone making one themselves? :\

Fine with me as well. If the apps are high quality and affordable and keep the iPhone stable, than I'm happy to buy apps this way. Apple gets their cut and they insure that their closed system continues to get new updates. Part of the problem of with other smartphones is that they can get very unstable when you throw apps on it that are not properly put through a good QA process.

I say bring it on.

Walled Garden development environments are an improvement from the current environment, but all one need do is look at XBox Live to realize how shitty it is in the bigger scheme. I don't know if Apple is just incapable of doing sandbox development, but their inability/unwillingness to do it says a lot about Apple long term.

Again, this is pure rumor at this point, but it falls in line with everything Apple has done so far, and would neatly defuse the public furor over 1.1.1 if they can announce it in some sort of timely fashion.

So can your PC... that's why man made uninstall. I mean its not like all Apple's QA made a perfectly stable phone as the iPhone crashes quite a bit.

I dunno, I guess the fact that every other phone in the world except the iPhone does a good job of it makes the FUD all that much hard to listen to.

This is not my experience at all, but I came from the PalmOS/Windows Mobile side. I've never used a Symbian phone.

So you're saying you have 10 songs in your Library right now? And you want to put five of them on your iPhone?

You could just check the 'manually manage music' or 'sync only checked items' type options in iTunes when you connect the phone. You could also go to the music tab of your phone and check the 'only certain playlists' (or something like that) and just create a playlist with those songs in it.

That should work (if I'm understanding you correctly).

So you're saying that people installing J2ME/Flash Lite applications (prevelant application formast for mobile) are crashing all over the place?

On a Samsung Blackjack? Yes. The Java Runtime is Fubar'ed. And Treo's crash when you breathe on them.

Word's on the street that the iPhone Dev Team managed to run unsigned code in a 1.1.1 iPhone and iPod Touch trough a .tiff exploit -same exploit used for downgrading PSPs back in the day-.

If everything goes as planned, we might have full access to 1.1.1 in a few days... or hours.

Its not to much word on the street as it is the iPhone Dev Team in IRC saying that they've found an exploit and determining how far down that rabbit hole goes for getting the hash keys :)

Dont mean to sound like a noob, but what is this double tap home button function? I have 1.1.1 and I am not sure what it does???

Go into Settings / General / Home Button. You can set a double-click of the Home button to do a couple different things from whatever application you're in at the time -- bring up the Home screen (which is does normally on one touch), bring up your Phone Favorites list, or iPod music controls. There's also a switch to show music controls whenever music is playing, which overrides its normal function. It's a nice shortcut.

I think you're understanding me, but where exactly are the options you're talking about? At the iPhone summary screen, I've checked "Sync only checked songs and videos." In the music tab, I've checked "Sync music" "Selected Playlists," and I've checked a new Playlist that I made which has the 5 songs I want to move checked. When I hit sync, the music doesn't transfer to my iPhone. Am I doing something wrong?

They're all mp3's in the right folder. I imported them into iTunes, and I can see them in iTunes. I didn't buy them in the iTunes store though.

That'd be better than the current situation, but still not ideal. Apple would most likely favor major companies like Google over the independent software developers.

I hope Apple eventually opens it up and embraces third party development. There's thousands of programmers just drooling to write applications for it and it'd make the iPhone the ultimate device.

Are the songs checked? Once you select sync checked songs, it overrides anything else.
