For $100 I might buy one as a backup phone or something, but Garnet? Ugh.

I guess I should call Verizon and actually make sure I'm no longer in my contract period . . . yeah, yeah, probably should have done that first.

In case Canadians hadn't heard yet, all talks between Apple and Rogers have broken down, and it's likely because Rogers Wireless, and the Canadian cellular provider market in general, for being greedy little d-bags and not giving us the same data plan you can get with AT&T in the US for under $300. If you'll excuse me, I have an angry letter to write to the CRTC.
Sean said:That is one of my favorite new features, as well as the double tapping spacebar for a period.
And the volume enhancements were really needed too.
Kung Fu Jedi said:I've been very happy with the 1.1.1 update as well, and if Apple continues to make those kinds of updates in the future, the iPhone is going to continue to evolve into an even better product.
I do hope they open it up for third party apps in the future though.
Juice said:Volume, Double-Tapping, and getting straight to iPod settings when music is playing were all CRITICAL parts of my upgrading.
once I realized that the encrypted image pretty much meant that Apple has nipped the firmware wars in the bud immediately, I figured I didn't want to play this game like I have with PSP. I want the browser updates, the phone updates, etc. more than I want to play Zork.
Tobor said:so the scuttlebutt making the rounds is that Apple is going to eventually allow 3rd party apps, but on Apple's terms. The theory is that they will use the iTunes store to sell apps and games, like they do for iPod games now. Authorized licensed software with Apple getting their cut.
Personally, I'm fine with this strategy. What does everyone else think?
Aristotlekh said:ahahahahahahahaha no. Apps shouldn't need to be approved to be used.

Tobor said:The phone is a closed system. Apple has now proven they want it to stay a closed system. It's no different than XBLM or PSN. Apple certifies that the app won't crash the phone and provides the distribution method, third parties get a way to sell software, and customers get their apps.
It's really just an extension of what Apple does with the iTunes store now. I wouldn't mind buying regular desktop software this way. Like Steam for software.
Kung Fu Jedi said:Fine with me as well. If the apps are high quality and affordable and keep the iPhone stable, than I'm happy to buy apps this way. Apple gets their cut and they insure that their closed system continues to get new updates. Part of the problem of with other smartphones is that they can get very unstable when you throw apps on it that are not properly put through a good QA process.
I say bring it on.
Phoenix said:So can your PC... that's why man made uninstall. I mean its not like all Apple's QA made a perfectly stable phone as the iPhone crashes quite a bit.
I dunno, I guess the fact that every other phone in the world except the iPhone does a good job of it makes the FUD all that much hard to listen to.
Eggo said:Noob question over here. Let's say I have 10 songs in my iTunes music folder. How do I get 5 of them over to my iPhone without bringing over all 10? I've tried creating new playlists and bringing over just the checked playlist, but the songs don't seem to transfer. Can anyone give me a step by step way to do this, or point me to a website that explains it? BTW, assume all 10 songs are imported into iTunes already.
Tobor said:This is not my experience at all, but I came from the PalmOS/Windows Mobile side. I've never used a Symbian phone.
Phoenix said:So you're saying that people installing J2ME/Flash Lite applications (prevelant application formast for mobile) are crashing all over the place?

Offline storage for Safari iPhone apps with better Javascript implementation. No native SDK.
Yikes.

If everything goes as planned, we might have full access to 1.1.1 in a few days... or hours.

Vyer said:So you're saying you have 10 songs in your Library right now? And you want to put five of them on your iPhone?
You could just check the 'manually manage music' or 'sync only checked items' type options in iTunes when you connect the phone. You could also go to the music tab of your phone and check the 'only certain playlists' (or something like that) and just create a playlist with those songs in it.
That should work (if I'm understanding you correctly).

SuperPac said:Go into Settings / General / Home Button. You can set a double-click of the Home button to do a couple different things from whatever application you're in at the time -- bring up the Home screen (which is does normally on one touch), bring up your Phone Favorites list, or iPod music controls. There's also a switch to show music controls whenever music is playing, which overrides its normal function. It's a nice shortcut.
