Searched and couldn't find a thread.

At least 31 people have been killed and more than 200 others wounded in a series of early-morning explosions in cities across Iraq, officials say.

Attacks were reported in Baghdad, as well as Tuz Khurmatu and Kirkuk in the north and Nasariyah in the south.

The co-ordinated attacks occurred during the morning rush hour and mainly involved car bombs.

The violence comes ahead of Iraq's provincial elections on 20 April, the first in the country since 2010.

Monday's attacks were particularly broad in scope, with several cities hit, including Fallujah, Tikrit, Samarra and Hilla.

The explosions were caused by 20 cars packed with explosives and three roadside bombs, AFP news agency reported.

Three car bombs went off minutes apart in Tuz Khurmatu, killing six people and wounding more than 60, AFP said.

Seriously. That can't be right.

Spanned across multiple cities.

By the sounds of it this was carefully planned and orchestrated. Effectively you've got anywhere between 10-40 guys sitting in a basement unanimously saying "you know what'd be a good idea? blow people the fuck up."

It's deeper than that. It's grievance towards Iraqi government, probably as America's puppet government or a deep sectarian divide. In either case, it's directed towards government. Sow the seeds of chaos and watch it grow into fear and distrust. For example, list of Ireland bombings.

Jesus. So many people killed and this isn't even ANYWHERE on the front page of most news sites, literally have to search for it on BBC. So horrible, 20 car bombs is insane.

This said, I hope you never have to face a wakeup call/reality check. Pretty sure you'd be bothered if you were there, Boston today, etc.

From 2003-2010, there were 1,759 terrorist incidents in Iraq alone. It's depressing but after hearing it essentially daily, it becomes common place. It sucks. Star Trek future can happen anytime now.

Wow, I wonder if it is linked to what happened in Boston.

Until anyone is identified as the culprits, no assumption about the two being linked can be made, nor should it be. There was some sort of connection to the bombing to the elections. What a marathon in Boston would have to do with that?

After reading Boston today, I was reflecting on how many times I've read Google homepage on a bombing elsewhere in the world... and just scroll on to something else.

This really just makes me so sick to read...

This trumps that tragic Boston Marathon story. 31 dead...200+ injured...my god.

RIP to all of the victims, and my condolences to their families.

I just don't understand why senseless violence like this needs to exist in a 21st-century environment. You'd think we'd have evolved beyond this barbarism.

As long as there are disagreements I'm afraid. Rest now dear souls :(

It sucks but this kind of stuff would be on the front page every week if it automatically got printed there. That's just not feasible.

Fuck the world, etc... Hell, Boston might be the only reason this even got a thread. When it happens so often, it takes something huge to be visible as news, or a significant date/event that is a good time to reflect on the last few months of violence.

It's quite telling what an emphasis we place on Western society.

Terrible day between Boston's attack and these attacks ... unbelievable.

This thread has been open for 30 minutes, the other for about 7 hours. Not to mention stats don't update in realtime. In any case, however unfortunate that it's the case at all, this is much more common in places such as Iraq than in the US. It gains much more press when it happens someplace considered to be generally safe.

I also find it interesting that this is receiving, by far, less attention than the bombs in Boston. One reason might be because they are more frequent over there, but of course there are other reasons too.

But this news has been up for a while. Only now it's getting a thread. Meanwhile, the INSTANT the other event happened, replies started flooding in.

Many people just don't give as much shit about Iraq anymore. It's horrible but it's not surprising. It's in a far away place, we pulled our troops out, and explosions of that sort seem to happen all the time there. Still, it's fucking horrible.

However what occurred in Boston, we just don't expect that to happen here. As least, not since 9/11. Although I think America is reaching a point where public shootings are becoming a bit common, and needs to be even more heinous than usual for us to really, really care.

Kurt Vonnegut probably has some quote about our apathy towards death somewhere.

How many neogaf users are there based in Iraq versus the US? To say there's no difference what so ever would naive but I don't think it's really that black and white, west vs east difference in interest. Bombings happen very rarely in the US as well, think that counts for something in regards to the sense of shock. It's unfortunate that people have become desensitized to violence in the Middle East but when it's happening that far away and so frequently in comparison what can one honestly expect from the public at large.

Bombs scare Americans much more then shootings

It's the unknown of it all, no one in custody, no suspects

Americans don't care about bombings in Iraq, it's too far removed.

20 car bombs coordinated across multiple cities is a huge move though and suggests that the insurgents in Iraq are still well organized.

This is fucked up. When will the violence end. There's no sense. There are other ways to change things. Violence accomplishes nothing. Only death, and dark things. Vengeance is useless. It does not bring light.

I don't know what the motives were in Iraq or in Boston, but it doesn't matter. The motives are irrelevant. The actions are all that matter. Very sad.

Why didn't you guys make threads? It's senseless to compare reactions considering we're posting in an English-language forum with many members who live in (or know people who live in) the Boston area.
