It's still the best game ever made

Sounds good!

As for UQM online melee, I shudder to think of the inevitable 15 minute standoffs between two players using Utwig Juggers. :p

SC2 is, in my mind, the best single-player game made to-date.

there have been some amazing games made since, but no one has topped the total package of good plot & characters / witty dialog / exploration / resource harvesting / ship customization / fast-paced arcade combat. and it had demoscene music to boot!

GOTM

GAF needs more SC2 love!

BTW, if no one has sent an email to Activision's producer about a real sequel, they need to do so.

Yeah, I LOVE the game. Still one of my favorites ever. Everyone should play it - considering that it's free, there's no reason not to. When I said I hadn't downloaded it yet, I just meant the latest version - I have an older one installed on my machine.

TFB was asking people to e-mail them so they could convince Activision that there's demand for a sequel, BTW. The address is alexness@toysforbob.com, if you haven't already sent them one.

Man, I think Star Control II was responsible for me getting less than 4 hours of sleep each night all through high school. Never had any game completely dominated my time than SC2 did when it came out.

I still go back to the game regularly. It's definitely in my top 5 of all time.

Did Star Control 2 have the dodo character whose secondary fire was to taunt people?

yes, I do believe they were called the Pkunk

I'm not certain though

It's only the best game in the history of video games.

So, YES.

I've had many a daydream about a proper Star Control II sequel made with modern dev tools for today's powerful platforms. Yikes.

Oh, how I love Star Control 2. I always have a special place in my pants for the Syreen <3. And the Spathi - it makes me laugh to this day thinking of their idiocy. What was their ship's name? The Evader? An apt name, whatever it was.

Oddly, the 3DO version is the best one to play. I spent all summer back in 1995 playing it to my hearts content. I remember putting the star map up on my wall and putting a pin in each system I visited.

I pine for another game of its caliber. Another sequel, perhaps? I never got into SC3 - is it worth a try?

It was the Eluder. Complete with B.U.T.T. :D

The fan remake, Ur-Quan Masters, is thankfully based off the 3DO version, which is the definitive version of the game.

Best left forgotten, IMO. The starcon2 team wasn't involved because they wanted more money (since they worked without pay for a chunk during starcon2 development) and Accolade found someone else to make it. And it wasn't nearly as good as SC2 was because of it.

I only ever got to play the PC version. What made the 3DO version better? Specifics would be nice...

what do you mean? Star Control 3 never happened. You hear me? NEVER HAPPENED.

TBH I preferred SC1 more. It was stripped down arcade fun. Not quite as involved as SC2.

The big downside was the AI in SC1 was pretty poor. Once you learned how to use the ships, you could beat the computer about every time.

I tried to get into the UrQuaan Masters a year ago, and it still seemed to "much" for me. Plus, I didn't have a controller, so the space combat was frustrating.

MS can have my wallet, my truck, anything they want, just make this happen.

I had Star Control 1 for the Genesis in High School, and we played the game endlessly for 2 years. My best friend and I pooled money for a 3DO and SC2 when it came out. the clerk at Circuit City thought we were insane.

High school for me = getting laid for the first time and Star Control. I'm not sure which was more important.

""Hello to our *HOUSE*. Do you feel *BETTER* yet? You are *CAMPERS* and you will enjoy *THE CHANGE*, but maybe not yet. Let's *SPITTING* the fun words for several *PIECES*, and then surprising things!"

I loved the Orz. Running into them was always hilarious because of the terrible 'translation' that was intentionally used.

The 3DO's advantage was mostly audio. The PC version of starcon2 shipped on 3.5 floppy disks, which the 3DO version was a CD-ROM. So the MOD files themselves sounded better as they were somewhat resampled for more fidelity, and the game had some speech in it as well.

SC1 wasn't a bad game at all and gets forgotten quite often, mainly because Star Control 2 is one of the finest pieces of interactive entertainment ever made. The strategy bits were interesting and the sides pretty well balanced.

In SC2 the ships weren't really balanced too well for the AI, either, but they staggered the acquisition of the more powerful/broken ships (Utwig, Chmmr) throughout the later parts of the game. By then the flagship would cut through both Kzer-Za and Kohr-Ah without much effort anyway, if you had taken the time to research and get the proper upgrades.

You don't need a controller to play UQM. We all played SC2 back in the day with a keyboard, and it rocked. It's the PERFECT laptop game IMO (along with something like Civ or Europa Universalis 2).

Well, it seems like Arne up there is a fan.

Hmm.

And there's already the Ur-Quan Masters PC version they can easily base their XBLA port off of.

Hmm.

Plus I assume Activision wants to get in on the XBLA stuff, if they haven't already.

Hmm.

Is that Arne I see picking up his XBLA Batphone to make a call to potentially interested parties??

HMMMMM.

some speech? The 3D0 game was fully voiced. IIRC there was no voicework at all in the PC version.

Yes yes yes - being able to actually hear the pathetic yet sympathetic pleading of the Spathi and the seductive preening of the Syreen was awesome, and not a minor upgrade in any way.

What race was it that always said lines like "We grow turgid"? It always floored me. I think it was a lava-ey or fire-y alien of some sort.

This needs to be emphasized as the greatest idea ever put forth on this forum.

There was definitely no voice work in the PC version. Not that it would be fun talking to Mycons or Ilwrath anyway.

I didn't think the entire 3DO port had full speech. I know it had a lot of voice work, for sure, but not full-blown stuff-that's a ton of dialogue to voice over. I've got a old build of UQM on my laptop here, I'll check it out later this evening.

Serriously. The game is free and will play on pretty much any computer. There's no reason to have never played it.

My favorite ship was always the Yehat. It's so much fun to swoop in and do some damage then raise the shields and take off.

Mycons-genetically engineered fungus freaks with a *highly* annoying ship to fight when put in the hands of a decent player. Also, the Syreen don't like them very much.

Agreed!

Though I'll admit I don't understand the SC3 hate. I liked SC3 just fine.

I should get back to my SC2 game I started a couple months back though...

I also love Star Control 2! A copy of it was included with SC3, but I enjoyed 2 a lot more than 3! I don't have 3 though.

If any of you are looking for a similar experience, you might try Starflight for the Genesis. It's a very similar game, and I played it before SC2 (so to me, SC2 is a similar experience to starflight). It doesn't have nearly as good of a battle system, but its mining and planet hopping is done better. You actually have to land your ship on the planet, and the planet's gravity affects how much thrust you have to use. The planets are really well done too.

Really if you like SC2, you should like Starflight.

A more modern Star Control follow up is Space Rangers 2 for the PC. Great game.

Mind blowing game. Once, I saved too far from home.... not enough fuel to get back.... gg :(

And yes, the 3DO version was the best version, and the best 3DO game ever.

Sorry, Road Rash.

Anyone knows if the digital version is malware/spyware free?

Yea all the digital versions are starforce free. I got mine through Stardock/Totalgaming.net and it's completely DRM free.

most excellent.
I love Stardock and I try to support them as much as I can.
Looks like I have another purchase to make.

No way. The 3DO version had missing text, had atrocious CGI intro and ending, voice acting, while good for some races, was completely off on others (Orz) and SC2 is much better without the voice acting. The game was to appeal to imagination (with many references to frungy, happy brown Ur-Quans, ancient wars, and so on) that voice acting really mars the experience. Hell, the Dynarri sounds like a Texan with a southern drawl! And the 3DO version missed out on having the credits dialogue which really made the ending above and beyond other video games.

Is Ur-Quan Masters basically the 3DO version, or a version that takes the best from the 3DO and PC versions?

Or alternatively, the PC version of Starflight which came out first. It doesn't have as good graphics or sound as the later Genesis version, but they had to cut out some some stuff to fit the cartridge in the latter version. And once you've played that, its time to play Starflight 2.

I love space adventure games so much that I've been working on a game engine to make your own as a hobby on the side. I'll probably never release it, but its fun making it. :D
