Is Capcom the next THQ?

Losing close to 800k users in Japan would constitute a significant drop, one that wouldn't be made up for by western sales.

And we sure as hell can predict how the game will perform in the west based on past sales.

What are you even talking about? If you want to use past sales to predict potential western sales - well then, guess how much MHTri sold in the west. Pretty much that exact 800k that you seem to think is impossible. Hell, MH3G (just on 3DS, not even counting WiiU) is at 500k in the west, and added 200k just this past quarter. For the life of me, I can't imagine why you'd think getting in the vicinity of 800k for MH4 in the west would be some kind of impossible feat.

Where are you getting these numbers from? 3G did around 80k units it's first month at retail in March for the 3DS in NA and I haven't seen much to imply that it's continued to sell well since then.

Also the Wii version shipped closer to 700k in the west. It was also a much, much more successful platform here than the 3DS. The difference it by several orders of magnitude.

The number comes from Capcom's own Platinum charts. The Japanese version topped out at 1.6M (they don't include Best Price releases in the totals on their Platinum chart). The game went up to 1.9M during Q1 of this year (when the game was released in the west), and then up to 2.1M at the end of June. That's 500k for the western version.

And yeah, the Wii version is over 700k in the west, and your statement was, "Losing close to 800k users in Japan would constitute a significant drop, one that wouldn't be made up for by western sales." -- well, over 700k sure seems to fit the criteria of "close to 800k". I have no idea why you're trying to quibble over the number.

And 3G on the 3DS is essentially the same game that those 700k+ already bought and played on the Wii - and yet it still sold 500k for the same game with a much smaller userbase in the west. With MH4 being an all new game, 500k+ is pretty much a lock in the west, and I'd say that 700-800k+ is a good bet.
