Is Dark Souls 1 the best game this century? Ever?

Dark souls. Bought the game on launch of Xbox 360. 2011.

Booted it up. Gave it a few minutes. Shelved it. Was too intimidated

Fast forward to the remaster in 2018. That’s when the love affair began.

Between Prepare to die on pc, DSR on PC, Xbox, PS and Switch, I’ve logged maybe 300 hours

I’ve never finished NG+. I’ve not done all story lines. Not close. I’m still discovering new things.

The world and NPC’s and how interconnected it is, is still unmatched in my opinion. It’s open world but… NOT… but kinda. And it’s perfect.

Anyone like me? Didn’t give the game a chance when it came out and now it’s a GOAT contender? Nothing more satisfying for me than starting a fresh build and reaching Firelink Shrine for the first time. The music. Atmosphere.

First half of the game is a 10/10, second half a 6/10.
I’d AGREE. 1st half is masterpiece worthy. 2nd not as much

But… maybe it’s just me. I genuinely don’t mind demon ruins as a whole. Nor do I mind blight town. Actually love it.

For me the worst area is tomb of the giants and maybe New Londo post draining it. But that’s just my taste in areas. I only semi dread them lol

No.
Go play Bloodborne or Elden Ring.
I own both. Definitely can’t say I’ve beaten either. I know. Shameful. Elden ring kinda just feels like open world DS. And that’s fine. Love its atmosphere and such too. But I’m just obsessed with DS actual world is all. Far far more than other souls games.

I admit I LOVE DS2 btw. Sorry

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
It's a very cool game but I still think there are better ones.

What I love the most about Dark Souls is it's world design, all that interconnectivity, shortcuts and shit. King's Field IV is pretty much the same and I loved it for the same reason. DS2 and DS3 sort of dropped the ball in that department imo, but they are still cool games ofc.

I kind of agree with this because at least Sonic fans will give other Sonic-like games a try (like Spark or Penny's Big Breakaway), because they love Sonic so much.

Quite a few Souls fans think that only Fromsoft is allowed to own the subgenre to themselves.
Oh no. Not me. Love a good souls like. Also FromSoft lately…. Ehhhhhhhhh on Nightreign and Switch 2 game multiplayer nonsense drivel

Yeah. DS2. Which I actually like. Majula is amazing.

DS2 basically gave up on interconnecting its world. It’s got a few shortcuts. But not many.

I do still enjoy it.

For me Sekiro is my favourite FROM game, the is just combat just sublime.
I’ve got an issue. JUST bought it recently. Played it. Hmm. Maybe 3-4 hours.

My issue is combat. You HAVE TO BE a party GOD. I am pretty decent at parries in DS1. Lord Gwyn is nothing to me.

But I can’t seem to get the timing down in Sekiro. I’ve heard when it clicks. It clicks. It’s not clicked yet.

The GAME is fantastic

If my wish of life can be granted

I want Dark Souls 4. But… make it exactly like DS1. Full blown interconnected. The works. Let it cook in the oven however long you need. Anything
Based on what I've been reading from Miyazaki and Fromsoft dev team's quotes lately, it sounds like they think they need to keep going bigger with their games. Hopefully that doesn't just mean gigantic games because it would suck if they somehow learned the same wrong lessons that Ubisoft did about map sizes, but just differently.

Dang, I really need to hop on kings field 4.

It a shame that from decided to go with the “le heckin hard” part of the souls formula rather than the interconnected world part. I still love them all, though

Either way, there is no game world that has ever done it for me like dark souls 1s first 2/3rds did

I was like that as well until Genichiro boss fight and the entire combat system just clicked and I was OBSEES with this game.

Any parry tips? I’m not exactly new to the genre. But I’m at a certain leader in a camp EARLY on that’s got my ass stumped. Can’t recall his name. He’s not a “boss”. Just some dumb camp leader I’m guessing.
I have advice that proved to massively help me with Sekiro: Turn off the music.

Yes, you will unfortunately lose a few cool tracks, but it will help you focus and listen for the patterns in deflects much better, without panic-inducing boss combat music constantly playing loudly.

Think of the parries as if they were a music/rhythm game. Listen to the CLANK sounds. Once you get used to the rhythm of each enemy it can even get quite easy.

It's a very very important game, it created a new genre. Demon's Souls of course was first but Dark Souls is where it really started to gain traction and a huge cult following.

I would say Dark Souls is just as important of a game in that regard as the original Wolfenstein or Doom in spearheading a new genre.

I know the topic is "best" but that notion really is irrelevant and of course completely subjective.

If you're a fan of doing the same thing over and over and just dying over and over then sure I guess.
Now days on a fresh start, I can run through and hardly die. Am I “good”? Probably not. But I know the mechanics and what to do in order to not struggle. I’ll die in Mario platforms too. But now I’ve played Mario enough to know its mechanics as well. Same principle.

Dark souls isn’t a hard game. I do Not say that as some “boast”. I’m shit at games in general probably
