Is Hermen Hulst OUR guy again after Ghost of Yotei's announcement, Sonybros?

Has our favorite Dutchboi redeemed himself?

  • He's the absolute GOAT. Also Horizon is the greatest franchise in existence.

  • He will be if he brings Concord back.

  • No. Not until he resurrects Killzone.

  • No. Jimbo is still my preferred sugar daddy.

  • Let me ask the Dorito pope first.

I guess I have an unpopular opinion even amongst many PlayStation users. But I’ve always thought Hermen does a good job overall.

He doesn’t always get it right with his ideas, clearly if he was so high on a game like Concord, but he does seem to be a hard worker. He’s constantly traveling to all the studios and it seems like he listens to the teams and gives them the resources they need to achieve their vision. I admire someone that works hard despite the end result. But the end results have been pretty good for the most part as well I think.

His obsession with all the Horizon projects is pretty funny though.

There are probably quite a bit of unannounced PS titles that will likely be announced closer to their release date. Beats announcing a game 5+ years out before it releases.

The guy is a scapegoat for every misstep that happens, yet never gets credit for when things go right (Helldivers 2, AstroBot, etc). It's unfortunate.

The decisions to allocate more to Live Service are even made collaboratively above his paygrade when they talk about which areas to invest in. This was shown years ago in their financial reports and have been in discussion for ages.

He's been good so far outside of Concord.
Helldivers 2, Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade, Astro Bot, Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei is a good lineup in my book.

Why does he get credit for helldivers 2 and Rise when those were in development under yoshida? Astro Bot is also kinda weird since he probably pushed for Japan Studio to be closed so no i think he deserves the boot and that's like yesterday.

Is there any official documentation about Hermen Hulst's projects involvement?

Something like:
He decided to do this game
He decided to stop the other one
He infuenced another game developement

I've seen nothing like that
Since I haven't this kind of information i can't blame him for things like Concord or praise him for other games

Maybe this Ghost game is one of the few that he "influenced" because it's the latest announcement but I think that when he got his position most of the games now releasing were deeply in production so he could'nt do too much to drive them else than to the release...

He has a lot of credibility from Killzone2 and HZD but its hard to sweep $400m under the carpet (assuming the reports of that ridiculous amount of loss are true)

Honestly the only things I've seen him actively involved in are Killzone, Horizon, and Death Stranding and I wouldn't call that a bad resume. I guess I'm also curious about Physint and his involvement in that.

Sony have moved to announcing games much closer to release than they did last gen.

Unfortunately this coupled with the pandemic created a bit of a gap in exciting announcements.

The move to focus more on GAAS was Jim Ryan’s decision.

But Herman still shares a lot of responsibility, especially the execution.

Because they were in development for a long time under his tenure, and he could have easily decided to not support the projects and scrap them. Plus, Rise of the Ronin most likely started full production once Nioh 2 was released in 2020.
Astro Bot is also kinda weird since he probably pushed for Japan Studio to be closed so no i think he deserves the boot and that's like yesterday.
No, it's not "kinda weird" if you don't spin it in that way. It's not like he didn't establish Team Asobi or Astro Bot got that budget out of nowhere.

Dude is out of his league.

The "Welcome to the family" photo is a meme. When I see the PlayStation Studios logo, there's a 99% chance I will actively avoid the game.

I want this woke clown gone, yesterday, he fucked up so many times and keeps fucking up again and again, shuhei, jack trenton or/and shawn layden were true visionaries, hell i would gladly take ken kutaragi instead, his ps3 was 600$ but at least played ps1/2games and had a disc/blu-ray drive, not to mention sony was selling it at over 200usd loss.

Compared to today's prices, both of base/slim ps5 and the upcoming pr0- ps3 was crazy good deal and a bargain, not to mention so many exclusives instead of useless remasters.

The decision to invest into GaaS games is probably a highest degrees of management decision, that Hulst has little input on. And on that highest level, decisions are often made to appease shareholders. They all would have been skinned alive if they resisted the GaaS trend, even if they would have been right to do so.

Saw him recently in a cafe here in Amsterdam. Thought about saying 'hi' but then I remembered I don't really care about playstation that much.

GG was barely functioning under his lead for years and they promoted him? He is the worst thing in SCE right now.

I've said it before, but we haven't really seen much of Hulsts portfolio since he has been put in place, yes concord was a fuckup. but games take long and we'll only truly start seeing fruits of his initiatives in the next few years.

the test will be how good they are and how he is able to pivot, otherwise i see him being demoted or ousted before ps6
