Is it just me, or is the first Spiderman a blatant remake of the first Superman film

WTF? I havent watched Superman in awhile, until now, but humongous similarities are everywhere. Is it just me? The tones are way too similar. Then there's little crap like how both heroes were 'unconcious' while the villian prattled on with his 'join me' nonsense. They both even 'ended' with making the hero choose between his woman and the faceless masses. :/

And Brahms' 1st symphony is a blatant remake of Beethoven's 9th. So? Borrowing of concept != theft of material.

Ripoff or not , I don't recall a scene in spiderman involving the earth spinning backwards to rewind time and this makes spiderman 10 times the film that superman is alone.

Also, even though her haircut looks really outdated 20 years later, Kidder > Dunst.

I would bang a hot farmer!

Here's hoping Spidey 3 doesn't continue the trend.

I heard that Spidey 3 will have a villain that will take fractions of a penny from every bank transaction and then transfer it all to his account. :p

Superman and Spider-Man 2 are about equal as far as comic book movies go...

Until Batman Begins is released, that is.

If they cast the right person as the villain in the Batman Begins sequel...holy fucking shit.

Funny, when I watched Spider-Man, I also watched Superman. In a row. And I tought there was not a glimpse of similarity between them. ;)

I think he's refering to the fact that they share a first introductory act, a second act with a twist or complication and a climactic third act that leads to a denoumont.

What a rip-off.

A trinity? They ripped off the Babylonians big time! :lol

Even after reading this thread, I still can't see the similarities between Superman and Spider-Man flicks. Other than the obvious of them having powers, an enemy, saving innocents, and having a girl friend of sorts.

Did you guys all watch Superman on cable last night? (we tuned in right at the helicopter scene, got hooked until the end, even though I own the DVD). Now that I am used to seeing the Bullets/Fire/Ice gauntlet scene (restored on DVD version), it seemed strange to see that scene cut on teh TV version.

Anyway...

IF Spider-Man had had scenes like these, I'd agree with the rip-off idea:

- Spider-Man supdued by special substance that is radioactive to his Spider-self.
- The main villain had bumbling stooges helping him out.
- John Williams score which cuts to the "love theme" every time the female is in the shot. (ugh! really overused by the time Superman IV was made).
- If Peter Parker tried as hard as Clark Kent to be a bumbling clumsey fool. Parker is just an everyguy trying to eek is way thru life, now with spidey powers. I like that.

Uh, that scene is originally from the "TV version". When aired on ABC they added in that scene (and one or two others), which is why it was restored on the movie for its 20th anniversary.

You, sir, are on crack and it's some bad stuff you're smoking.

The Joker from Batman 1 is easily the coolest villain in any comic movie, but all the Batman actors have been extremely lame (Clooney of course took it to the another level altogether). The other thing that Batman had going for it was that kickass soundtrack, but that is about it. Good flick, but not in the same league as Spiderman2 or Superman1. I would probably put it above most other comic movies, just because of how awesome Jack Nicholson was as the Joker.

Are you serious? Look at both movies and the lead characters personal dramas. Unappreciated Nerds? Check! Death of a father figure? Check! Big move to the big city? Check! Both characters burst onto the scene by saving their love interest who coincedentally was falling to her death in front of hundreds of spectators? Check! Montage of their heroic exploits with theme songs and spectator commentary intact? Check! Villians who use their weakness against them knocking them "unconcious" and trying to talk them into joining them? Check! Villians who make them choose to go to the left and save the faceless masses, or go to the right and save their beautiful love interest? Check! There are TONS of similarities. Similarities that are not shared(in similar volume) by any other comic movies either, so don't even try and belittle them.

You know what's really annoying? When people say Star Wars and Superman have the same theme music...
That happened when they played the StarWars music at the Superbowl with my friends. "Cool, its Superman!"

Ask people in your office to sing the Superman theme.... a lot of the time they'll give u the Star Wars theme. This is a pet peeve of mine too.

I still love the first few Superman movies.

Heh, Nicholson isn't even the best Joker ever...Hamill's Joker in Return of the Joker is absolute gold.

Lex Luthor in Superman is the villain in any superhero film I hated the most. Gene Hackman's obnoxious acting was really getting on my nerves.

It's Hackman, and I always thought his Luther was classic.

I knew, I edited my post. I don't remember him doing anything remotely evil other than that message that only Supes could hear, and I have an incredible memory. He was booring.

He hasn't aged well to me. He's always laughing and he looks downright cheesy now, nearly like in the 60's batman series.

Read Joseph Campbell and get back to me.

Superman 1 is still the greatest comic movie ever imho, but Spiderman 2 is a very close second.

Need to see this movie again. Somehow came across my old collection of Dick Tracy trading cards recently and realized that Al Pacino was Big Boy Caprice. WTF! :lol

yeah, that isn't news to me, and it in no way invalidates my observation.

Okay. It's just that the things you are pointing out are tropes across the history of film and entertaimnent that can be applied to almost any movie about heroes.

Star Wars:

Unappreciated Nerds? (Luke is a whiny farmer dork)

Death of a father figure? (Anakin was murdered by Vader)

Big move to the big city? (Luke leaves the farm for Mos Eisley then the galaxy)

Both characters burst onto the scene by saving their love interest who coincedentally was falling to her death in front of hundreds of spectators? (Luke shows his courage when he grabs Leia and swings her across the Death Star abyss)

Montage of their heroic exploits with theme songs and spectator commentary intact? (Ok, no montages, thank God)

Villians who use their weakness against them knocking them "unconcious" and trying to talk them into joining them? (Luke, join me and we'll end this senseless conflict)

Villians who make them choose to go to the left and save the faceless masses, or go to the right and save their beautiful love interest? (Luke's decision at the end of Empire)
