Is it worth it to get a Vita?

watered down versions should only be used to describe games that are literally watered down ports of console/superior versions, not unique entries in a franchise.

Vita is definitely worth it. Uncharted is fucking amazing, Wipeout is great, Mortal Kombat is fantastic, Escape Plan is good stuff, PSP games look great on it, etc.

100% agreed. Watered down is a downgrade with respect to ports. Even with Resistance, it was a new entry. Not really unique but it's a game you couldn't play on the PS3.

resistance could be considered watered down as its a shorter campaign and has a more limited multiplayer that its console counter parts..... I still enjoy it though.

I think as bad as Vita is selling worldwide most people would wait for the inevitable price slash/bundles unless you don't mind hearing that weeks later it got reduced. Also while the games released for Vita have been good so far, the upcoming support looks pretty terrible from 3rd parties.

I don't think the Vita (or 3DS) are worth getting right now if you already have a PSP (or DS). The best games for either of the new systems are the last gen games that are playable on them. I'd wait for the price drop.

So you don't want "watered down" versions of Uncharted, Resistance, and Assassin's Creed (even though Resistance is the only one I would qualify as "watered down"), but you'll take the same format of "watered down" games on your 3DS because you have a love for those characters? Am I right?

Well i would argue strategy seems to different for Nintendo. With games like 3D land, kid icarus or Luigis Mansion they are at least trying to make games that specifically fit the handheld format with designing time limits and short levels in each of these games. These games also do not resemble any experience you can already get on the Wii which is why theyre not watered down. Theyre either significantly different, complete and actualized sequels (such as mario kart 7), or new franchise altogether in kid icarus.

Uncharted golden abyss on the other hand is obviously watered down from something like Uncharted 3, i dont think i even need to explain the many reasons why if you are thinking with a clear unbiased mind.

Also 3ds has the 3d which offers a kind of unique experience, whether it appeals to you or not. Funny youre accusing me of fanboyism and favoritism here as I could easily accuse you of the same.

I guess I could agree with that. It's a matter of semantics with the word "watered". I would consider Lego Batman a "watered" down port since it doesn't take advantage of the hardware (port of 3DS game). Resistance Vita is functionally depleted in comparison to it's big brother.

I digress .. to each his/her own. Just buy and play whatever you want after considering what's before you.

It feels like I've seen this thread several times before...

You buy a console/handheld the moment it has enough games that appeal to you (already released or to be released in the NEAR future). How many games does it take? Well, there's no straight answer to that one. It's up to you, though many would argue purchasing a 3DS/Vita for one game is a foolish decision.

I personally disapprove of people who buy consoles on impulse because of new, shiny hardware. Games are (or should be) the single, most important factor in determining whether a console/handheld is worth the purchase.

How is Mario Kart and 3D Land and Luigi's Mansion watered down versions of console games when they are full sequels and had the main teams working on them?

wouldnt batman also be considered watered down since they took out open world (i believe i could be mistaken) vs the consoles?

So... like Gravity Rush (10 minutes missions or 1-2 minutes challenges), Unit 13 (small 5-10 minutes missions), Motorstorm RC (2-3 minutes races) or Escape Plan (1-2 minute puzzle stages)?

Also, seriously, that stuff of "Mario Kart 7 is a true sequel but Wipeout is a watered down port" is nonsense.

I would say no, unless you already see multiple games that interest you on it. I'm still kind of trying to find my go-to game for it. I have huge buyers remorse.

there are many more chapters (they're shorter) in uncharted ga than in the console versions, so it essentially has shorter levels too. wipeout races are really quick and hot shots golf game rounds can be done in like 30 seconds. motorstorm rc races are super quick too. you're definitely right that super mario 3d land has short levels, but let's not pretend that vita's games aren't playable in short bursts.

also, the home button on both vita and 3ds can make any game playable in short bursts imo. i love using it when i'm playing ocarina of time and need to take a break.

wipeout was made by the main team and is a main entry in the series...

There are plenty of unique games that fit the Vita perfectly though, and the 3D factor of the 3DS (a console I owned at launch) has done little to enhance the actual gaming aspects of that console, whereas the Vita includes everything needed to deliver virtually every type of control imaginable. I'd trade 3D for rear touch any day.

The home console games that have been given sequels or other Vita treatments so far have all either done new things to take advantage of the Vita (Virtua Tennis with augmented reality, Uncharted with gyro controls, Mortal Kombat with its absurdly high amount of challenges that are Vita specific, etc) or they just happen to fit the platform fine as is (Wipeout, Rayman).

On my 3DS I played Ocarina of Time, Star Fox, and my DS copy of Super Mario 64, all of which were ports of home console games. Maybe I just want those experiences on the go, too.

How do you feel about Mario 3d land, kingdom hearts, monster hunter, and resident evil revelations? Because honestly those are the games worth playing on 3ds and they all fit your description of "water downed console ports or spinoffs". Besides kid Icarus and Mario cart (both would be way better on consoles) I can't think of any unique games for 3ds.

Mario 3D Land and Revelations are 'watered down' games now?? lol

Uncharted GA played more like a treasure hunting game than a third person shooter akin to Uncharted 3, for me. Paging through my map, platforming and exploring more than I did in any other uncharted, taking photos, the melee system, and the use of rear touch are all examples why Golden Abyss was unlike any Uncharted I had played before.

I almost bought a Vita today, but the prices of the games...30 € for mgs:hd? I'm a big fan but those games are ten year old, I'd happily pay 10 € but that's just too much.

That's fine, but then I can't say that the 3DS has no games just because I don't care about those games. It just has no games that I care about.
Whoa, these are my exact thoughts as well. I don't think either of us are angry and passionate enough for GAF.

They look great in 'HD' though. IMO, worth the price of admission.

Price isn't an excuse for Vita in my opinion, you can, if you want to get it cheap.

Games comes down to personal taste and a person's ability to completely accurately value the PSP library to themselves (Which a lot of people seem to ignore).

Any PSP game I wanted, I would have already played on my PSP.

Not for me yet but a price drop wouldnt change that.

I need to see the Vita selling more before I jump in. With the 3DS at worst I know the japanese 3rd party support will be top notch and then you have the great nintendo games to go with it.

With the Vita I am looking at the sales and even in the biggest handheld market they are not selling hardware. I'm more concerned with 3rd parties in Japan offering mimimum support for the vita and that more than is stopping me getting one.

PS4 is around the corner so sony will shift focus to that so the vita needs top class 3rd party support but sales will dictate this and the way its going I cant see much of that in the next 1 - 2 years.

There can be great games in those genre/series if only B teams were not working on them. Resistance is embarrassing for a 2012 game. And the only first party that figured out how to make a Vita game with good shooting controls is now closed (Zipper). People seem to think shooter means graphics or big budget but it doesn't have to be that way at all and especially not for multiplayer. If they spend too much chasing graphics we will end up with games that have big input lag. There are better ways to make a handheld game look good than just making it a scaled down version of console assets

I thought the same thing. But a giant OLED screen, a second stick, bilinear filtering and prices dropping like crazy has me picking up PSP games left and right and playing the bejesus out of them.

I'm extremely happy with the Vita library thus far, but I expected to be as I like Sony's franchises and developers. But the amount of time i've spent playing PSP games and minis on this thing is whats really surprised me. I liken it to buying a new graphics card for your PC. Yes, it's the same game, but damn it looks shiny.

I'm kind of interested in getting one, but... if the install base is low, that means less games and less games means... well, it would be a waste of money.

And for the record, I have a 3DS already. I only have one game and I'm only interested in Kingdom Hearts at this point. That doesn't have a lot of games I want either, evidently... for now.

no. sold mine

Lets get this straight, they would be better on consoles.

Or so I hear from all the Vita critiques.
Technically this was a criticism against the PSP since it didn't apply to Nintendo's DS.

3DS is immune from this criticism because Nintendo (fans) invented it and no one else is allowed to use it.

What was presented in the article that turned you off from your purchase? The memory card situation is awful but well known and his complaint about the lack of games for the system isn't anything new.

Well, the lack of games for a 6 week period is not a good sign. I mean, it is a gaming system primarily, isnt it?

Thanks for proving you know absolutely nothing about vita (: Uncharted 3 is more focused on cinematic set pieces while golden abyss is something focused on treasure hunting, exploring and using the vita unique featured to solve puzzles. There are also checkpoints everywhere to help make the game more playable on the go. Also the chapters ate very short but there is alot if them. Once again making it a more portable friendly game. Oh and lets not forget the neat functionality for items and other things. Its quite obvious you've never played the game.

Selling my Vita now. Kotaku is always known for their quality articles.

Its one guys opinion, just like people in here. But i do find it weird that Sony releases Vita and very few games are available for it and launch Move and very few games are out for it as well. I mean, if you don't release games how do you expect to get sales?

Oh, I assumed you knew those things going in. It's not much of a qualifier, but it's worth noting that the writer of the article is specifically referring to retail games (here's hoping Jet Set Radio HD and Retro City Rampage come out this month). The list of upcoming games is worth going through. If there's nothing coming out this year that interests you, then I don't think the system's worth buying this year.

Unless you're Canadian.

I haven't been following vita as much as i do console gaming. But EA is on, thank god. I might wait for a price drop though.

Also while the games released for Vita have been good so far, the upcoming support looks pretty terrible from 3rd parties.
That's what's holding me back. If the upcoming 3rd party support looked stronger, I'd grab one for sure. But as it is, I'm going to watch things develop before I make any decisions.

(And things look a bit shakier as of this morning -- COD Vita was considered by some to be a potential system savior, but now it sounds like it might end up being a 3DS/iOS port. Hmmm...)

wat!!!!

you got a link?? havent seen anything yet but havent looked.

Could care less about the game but same was said about madden.
I would die laughing if this true

If you're interested primarily in annual sports games and Uncharted, then holding off for a year is for the best. Madden 13 seems to be watered down from its console brethren, and Uncharted isn't going to go anywhere anytime soon (although I wouldn't mind if the price went down).

VitaGAF is always recruiting though.

Ya, i like Uncharted, God of War, NHL, FIFA, the rest depends on whats they release for it. Maybe some COD too.
