Is it worth it to get a Vita?

the vita has been the most played portable i've ever owned. it has surpassed my ps3 and 360. we had a horrible storm in the dc area last week and were without power for days. the thing literally saved me from descending in to heat induced madness.

I sometimes wonder if launch adopters of the 3DS have taken their "ambassador" status all too seriously. Some of the hard sells in this thread even though OP says he has one make me say wow.

I think Vita may be my favourite platform of the now. The ease of playing quick bursts of games, suspending them, then immediately going back that sexilicious OLED screen is something else. Never bought so many games in the first half a year of a systems life either, i gots the fever.

Makes me want to play my PSP.

I only played my PSP a few times after getting my Vita (when I forgot my Vita at the gfd's and wanted to play some Disgaea and Symphony of the Night). It was surprising how I somehow became a "snob" though, because I hated playing on that lesser screen and the unit felt so much cheaper. And I love my PSP 2000, but the Vita makes playing PSP games feel great again.

Most of my game time on my Vita has been playing either a PSP port (Disgaea 2) or a PS3 port (Disgaea 3), but the Vita games I have all made it worth it for me. It's just nice having the PSP library to fall back on.

On the other hand, I have dozens of DS games and I can't stand to play them on my 3DS. This was the same for me when I tried playing GB games on my GBA and GBA games on my DS - I always hated it. This is exactly why I was so surprised how much better PSP games look and feel on the Vita than they do on their native hardware.

To the OP - If there isn't much you're interested in, I'd wait until an inevitable holiday bundle or Black Friday deal...if at all.

Yeah, I've spent a good $500 on software since I got my Vita. I would have spent even more if Sony wasn't ripping people off on memory cards and offered an competitively priced, fast card that was 64 Gigs (or 128 gigs, but then I'm a little crazy)

I'm not sure if this was mentioned yet, but on the Sony online store, if you buy select VIAO computers, you can get a free Vita with it. That's what I did, and 2 weeks in, I love it and I can't wait for more titles to come out for it.

Cognitive dissonance in two paragraph form ;)

I hope you did that on purpose because that was fantastic. Sexilicous, even. Now I want pie.

Guy asks is Vita worth it, says already owns 3DS but lacks interest. Half of thread is "3DS!" Its a bit of a weird one. He can already make the call on hardware he owns, wants opinions on hardware he doesn't. Weirder still, the belief you cant have both right now. Console manufacturer monogamists are the worst.

Just about at the end of my Amazon UK bundled 8gb's rope. I havent even touched any of the PSP sales, managed to resist so far. Gonna fold soon and pay dat price soon I feel...

Call me weird but I bought the Vita to mainly play psp games. Vita screen is much better and with a grip attachment it's a lot more comfortable to hold. So if you never have a psp and hav a game or two you wanna play on the Vita I would say go ahead and buy it.

How did you keep it charged while playing for days?

I think the Youtube app is really nice, especially when I'm watching videos in bed. As much as I adore my iPad, it can be a teensy bit awkward to hold when you're lying down.

Based on op's posts, the answer is clearly no. He already has a 3ds that he doesn't play, why does he need another device to neglect? He'll play Assassin's Creed for maybe 10 hrs and then the system will collect dust until something else catches his interest, if that ever happens.

I think the problem with Vita is that is sharing a lot with PS3

Rayman Origins - on PS3/360
Uncharted - on PS3, different version though
Ninja Gaiden - everywhere :)
Disgaea 3 - PS3
Persona 4(October) - PS2
MGSHD - PS3
LBP(holiday) - PS3, different version

Same goes for Dragons Crown and Heroes of Ruin, which are games that i would buy a Vita for, but i can get them on my PS3

I think they need far more 100% exclusive games for the system

In contrast 3DS has games like Zelda OOT 3D remake, Bravely Default and full BC and i just have to get one for those

i don't understand, games like persona 4 remake are bad and zelda remake is good?
Don't you need a vita for ragnarock odissey, soul sacrifice and other games that people seems to want to forget?
And if you have to choose between wii and ps3 you would not count games like skyrim and batman because 360 has them too? Sorry but this is a thing that only nintendo people continue to say to hide the lack of multiplatform games on nintendo consoles.
Vita needs exclusives? Yes as any other consoles, but multiplatform games are not a bad thing, they are a good thng that nintendo consoles don't have, no multiplatform = less games, multiplatform games = more games.

Vita imo is by far the most interesting handheld out. The games list looks good to me, I don't see why it's a big deal some are ports. If I had the money (and I don't, not even close) I'd pick one up tomorrow with Motorstorm RC, Mortal Kombat, MvC3, and maybe Gravity Rush if it's got some replayability, or a sports game. It's got a pretty solid line-up, although E3 was disappointing in terms of the future. Maybe they're saving the announcements for later idk. I don't think Vita is on its death bed quite yet...I'm hoping a for a nice promotion or rebate during the holiday season to pick one up, and maybe it'll help sales.

well to be fair the list you quoted all the games are directly available on this gens hardware as opposed to Zelda OoT which isn't.

I dont own a ps3 so i love dem ports!!!! gwahahaha

OOT was ported to the GameCube and of course the Wii plays all GameCube games so hence, you can play OOT on this gens hardware ;)

have you ever heard of the nintendo virtual console?

Just to chime in I love my Vita. Grabbed PSP at launch it never caught on for me. Vita is far better. Great games imo, also really surprised I enjoy it so much. Hope It gets ports and exclusive games in the future.

You know the 3DS has been out a year longer right? Compare July 2012 Vita to July 2011 3DS and it would be so embarrassingly free for Vita.
Do you even know what you are responding to? I specifically responded to a list of 10 games the poster said they can list for each platform, and I found it kind of sad the list that was thrown up for vita compared to the 3DS. All I saw was ports ports ports for the Vita with a little uncharted thrown in, and as I said more power to you if you want multiple ports on the go for THAT price the masses obviously don't. Same could be said as always about the 3DS launch and the masses spoke with their money (just like I did)...

It depends if the games currently available appeal to you. If nothing appeals to you, its not worth it. If you think one or 2 games isn't enough, its probably not worth it to you.

I understand how you feel about the 3DS. I'm in the same boat.

I'd love to say yes but I haven't played mine in a few months now. My near population went from 100+ to around 15. Shame really. I like the thing. This will all change with Ragnarok Odyssey and Phantasy Star Online, though.

Mine is packed away due to a move coming up next week, but I must say I have enjoyed it far more than I anticipated. One of the key things I wanted at launch was PSOne support, but we see how that has turned it. However, I have enjoyed many games on this system, whether they be downloaded PSN titles or retail games.

Games I've completed:
Mortal Kombat (story + challenge towers done)
Uncharted: Golden Abyss - No console game, but for a handheld it's quite an achievement.
Rayman Origins: A Pocket version of the console game = Fantastic
Super Stardust Delta: hours upon hours spent in this amazing game
MLB The Show 12 - I take my franchise on the road w/ me. Has been fun during the baseball season.

I have enjoyed it far more than I anticipated, but once I can fire up the PSOne titles, and I download some PSP titles I've been longing to play, I think it will surpass my 3DS in terms of amount of time spent playing.

No regrets thus far.

Plus Mortal Kombat is $20 on Gamestop at the moment and Gamestop is also giving a $50 gift card with Vita-purchases. So, one considering buying one can get the Vita, Mortal Kombat and Memory Card..for the price of the Vita alone ($250).

I did this earlier in the week. I take the train alot but im gaming when the wife is watching tv. I had the psp and didnt care for it early on and sold it but Now i can also catch up on those games too. Once i held the 3ds and then the vita the choice was obvious to me. The supposed release of ps1 games and updated remote play will only enrich the system further.
I say get it, and also pick up hot shots golf from gamestop on tuesday for $20, MK is fantastic on vita as well. There is a thread about games in the pipe for vita and there is plenty coming, again its just what grabs you and what portable gaming means to you. If you even remotely enjoy it, this thing is beautiful.

Gravity Rush is one of my top games of the year so far... but now that I'm done with it I really don't have anything else to play. I've tried out all of the demos on the PSN store but everything except for Gravity Rush feels like a PS3 game shoehorned onto a less capable system rather than something which was designed to take advantage of the Vita's strengths.

Considering Gravity Rush's development history, you're off base.

I think its worth every penny I spent on it, I absolutely love the hardware and the games I've played on it and there are some more around the corner. It might be the least amount of buyers remorse I've ever had several months after buying at launch.

But on the other hand it honestly feels like SCEA is going out of their way to make this thing fail as badly as possible. I really can't believe there has still not been a single Vita game on sale yet in the store or that its somehow impossible to work in PS+ for the device, advertising across the board is nonexistent, most of the major Sony developers have no announced games in the pipeline, the glacial pace of support when it comes to Minis / PSP games (not having the new PSP games that came out post-Vita like Hakuoki and Unchained Blades work day 1 on Vita is unbelievable), even basic things like apps which have been available for the longest time like Wake Up Club are nowhere to be seen.

Not really, it was switched over from PS3 to Vita fairly early in its development cycle.

http://ownedgamers.com/ps-vita-gravity-rush-originally-intended-for-ps3/

According to the article, the switch from the PS3 to the PS Vita occurred around 2009. At the time, the system’s past nickname from the Gravity Rush development team was “New Portable Game Machine.” The game’s actual development started in summer 2008.

If you find a number of games that justify your want for it, then pull the trigger. Don't buy something and get remorse later like I did for the 3DS. I bought it day one and while I've enjoyed some games for it (SM3DL and MK7), I haven't bought a new game for it since December. With my Vita, it gets daily use and I can't explain why.

Wait for White!

Fantastic hardware, underwhelming (opinions) software library as of right now unless you're interested in quirky Japanese stuff.

By the time White is out, you'll have a few more games to choose from as well as an even sexier piece of hardware. You can't lose!

Vita is doing better right now for sure. All the 3DS had at this time last year was Ocarina of Time and Mercenaries. In simple terms that would be a Nintendo 64 port and a pricier version of DLC for Resident Evil 5.

No way man. Electronics almost always look better in black.

Buying a handheld for one game is stupid. I did it with 3DS and it was a huge mistake. Don't make that mistake.

I was amazed and pleased with OoT 3D but I didn pay fucking 340 for that privelge... So fuck no I will get a vita for 150 with 3 or 4 games. Basically waiting for FFX HD which I probably will get on the PS3 so not sure. Nintendo fucked me, I want the 3DS XL too... I'm sad I know still though. getting a handheld system a year after launch is too early.... nintendo taught me a lesson....

so why did he start this thread?

Does OP have a PS3? Because having a Vita alongside your PS3 is one of the best things about the system. I treat it entirely different from a more "dedicated" handheld like the 3DS.

Vita has become an extension of my console playing habits, which has made me play the thing more frequently than my PSP already. The fact that I treat it as an extension of my PS3, playing some PSN games on the go, transfer progress between games to continue later on the TV, and playing an occasional great title like Gravity Rush make it that the relative slow start of the handheld isn't really affecting me.

It's something Nintendo hinted at early on in this gen with the possible communication between DS and Wii, but that sadly never materialized anything concretely. Maybe 3DS and Wii-U will communicate more, but for now Sony delivers (at least for me) on the concept, and it can grow into much better things.

If you don't have a PS3 though I can understand that OP is a bit more reserved about buying the system.

As for the iPad 2/3 claim, I've got both an iPad 2 and iPad 3, and I've seen renderings that are technically more impressive to me than what I see on my Vita. Here's the thing, though - I'm not 100% sure, and I doubt you are, either. What I'd like to do is take a look at the technical specifications of both the GPU and CPU of each device, and make a proper claim then. Either way, the Vita is much closer to a modern iPad than it is to a PS3.

That's easy. The Vita has twice as many of the same GPU and CPU cores as the iPad 2 and an additional 128MBs of 2.5d stacked VRAM. The iPad 3 adds 2 more SGX543 GPU cores to match the Vita's quad core SGX543MP4, but still only has 2 ARM Cortex A9 CPU cores, compared to the Vita's quad core CPU. The iPad 3 has 1GB of RAM, compared to the Vita's 512MBs plus 128MB set up, but iOS reserves a lot of that. iOS also has a far thicker abstraction layer while Vita programmers have more direct and efficient access to the hardware. According to John Carmack that gives the Vita as much as double the performance on equal hardware.

The iPad's best looking games use fixed, or barely controllable camera angles so they can pour all the system's memory and shading power into a single image. Vita's best games are simulating large environments with full user camera control. Infinity Blade would look just as good on the Vita as it does on the iPad, if not better, but it only looks that good because the game doesn't worry about needing to render what's behind the camera at all times in case the player turns around. Even the Vita's fighting games aren't a good comparison because they run at twice the frame-rate (60hz) and use far more particle and lighting effects.

Most defo had mine since launch and loving MGS HD, even though i had them at launch on ps2 and the HD combo on ps3 :)

And my mother even thinks so too, she just ordered a 3g vita for my dads 62nd birthday next week :D
