Is KotOR worth playing before KotOR2?

It did seem like they dropped after. The only real fault I have with the game is the bland dark-side/evil stuff, but playing evil in a bioware game--let alone in the star wars universe- is pretty silly to begin with.

Well Jade Empire and Mass Effect were still good - only after that the Bioware become a joke.

Yo imagine how good the story to Mass Effect 2 would have been if it was made by Obsidian.

Would it have been a similar situation to Kotor 1/2?

Both are worth playing. And if you like one you'll like the other as well.

To me the only downside is the rather slow start of Kotor 2.

Somebody brings this up everytime the two games are mentioned, and it's always the dumbest fucking argument imaginable.

Why should BioWare be penalized for making a game true to the spirit of Star Wars? The whole fucking series is an homage to the Saturday Matinee Serials.

I like KotOR 2 for what it did to the Star Wars myth, but that's what the game's written to do. It's an apple to oranges comparison.

I'm not penalizing Bioware. Yeah Star Wars in general has "saturday cartoon" writing. I just like what Obsidian did with the franchise in terms of storytelling, and I just find that image slightly amusing.

Kotor 1 is great, but it hates my Windows 7 laptop and I'm too stupid to figure out how to install the wide-screen mod even after purchasing the recent PC retail re-release. You can do it on Steam, but apparently it's technically against TOS even though they apparently don't enforce it. I'm too chicken to install it on the Steam version though.

What's the recommended specs required to play KoTOR2 on PC?

That said, didn't the PC release get some ultimate patch very recently that fixes bugs and adds a lot of content that apparently allows for the story to make a lot more sense?

It's 2012. A cheap laptop can run the game well.

Are you referring to the Restored Content Mod? Yes, a simple Google search can find it for you. Fixes a lot of bugs, restores much of the cut content, etc. The same team has also completed a mod that partially recreates the Droid Planet subplot that was cut from the game. Google "Kotor 2 M4-78 mod" and you will find it.

Edit: I could be wrong, but from what I understand the widescreen fix doesn't work if you use the Restored Content Mod.

I remember the story to KOTOR 1(it was good) it had HK-47 too!

I felt KOTOR 2 was somewhat boring and remember nothing from that game.

Play the first one.

Isn't part of the fun making your own choices? An LP seems better for a JRPG with a shitty battle system than a WRPG with multiple choices and a good system.

I'm exaggerating, but KotOR 2 is probably the only game where the moment to moment game play matters so little that you can get away with doing this.

Sure, it doesn't speak to you or your opinion of the games, but that image really misses the point.

If they weren't being restricted by Bioware/EA then yes, easily. Although even when restricted they still produce vastly superior games.

These photos compare humor but choose not to use HK-47?
“Definition: 'Love' is making a shot to the knees of a target 120 kilometres away using an Aratech sniper rifle with a tri-light scope. Statement: This definition, I am told, is subject to interpretation. Obviously, 'love' is a matter of odds. Not many meatbags could make such a shot, and strangely enough, not many meatbags would derive love from it. Yet for me, love is knowing your target, putting them in your targeting reticle, and together, achieving a singular purpose... against statistically long odds...”

I thought Mass Effect 2 was an amazing game, I loved that it focused on the team building, but also had menacing encounters with Harbinger and the Collectors. It also had a very unique atmosphere.

Not really. It only has some small references to the first game.

There are plenty of reasons to skip it as it was never a great game to begin with. Lots of boring areas with typical simple Bioware writing, bad combat that only got worse as time went on (same with 2), and a lame villain. All it has is the twist.

This sort of motivates me to get 2 anyway. I could not stand anything about 1, it was slow and uninteresting. I do love Obsidian though, but I thought maybe I had to play the first.

It's not hugely necessary story-wise, but it's still a fantastic game worth playing. I just finished a replay of it myself and it's as good as I remember (outside of a few glitches), and having just started Kotor 2 (with the restoration and droid planet mods) you can immediately see the little improvements (I played it once years ago, but forgot most of the stuff).

No reason not to play it.

Kotor 2 better than Kotor 1? Neogaf.
I honestly can't even think of a single facet that KotOR 1 does better than 2. Graphics, UI and mechanics are comparable (I'd actually give that last point to 2), in terms of story, characters, writing and role-playing it's not even a contest.

One of the few places on the internet that can look past perceived classics and see the truth about how it may not be very good to begin with, especially when it has a sequel that does everything better.

Honestly both games have sub par gameplay but when that happens great writing and character development can carry a game like that. Kotor 1 doesn't have that, 2 does.

I ran into the strangest bug I've ever encounter in my life when I played KOTOR 2 about a year or two ago on the PC. An event (
the one where you ship gets boarded by pirates or something
) happened twice (cutscenes and all) only the character models were missing from some of the scenes the second time around. So fucking weird.

I laughed it off until I finished the planet hours later and I was unable to use the ship to leave. No fix for it, no saves from before that crazy bug, 20 hours down the drain, haven't been back since. :.(

EDIT: The worst thing was that I think I had just found
the last piece of HK-47, which I was looking forward to the entire time.

Were you using the Restored Content mod? That is one of the known bugs with that mod. Here is the fix for it

Yeah, and be evil. Going around being an absolute dick to everyone in that game was hilarious and awesome.

The first game got boring to me very quickly. Two is good fun I just need more time to finish it, one is a game I actually stopped playing.

You may need to check your memory banks because 2 was finished

By a team of modders, 6 years later, who were only able to restore parts of the game that were nearly finished.

I recommend reading Scorchy's LP rather than playing KOTOR 2, because it's more enjoyable than either of the games, neither of which are a heap of fun to play imo.

I think 1 is better paced and a better balanced game overall, but 2 does some really interesting things with the Star Wars mythos that we'll probably never see again.

KOTOR2's rushed nature is a real drag though.

Yup.

Is KotOR2 really not that fun to play, or is this a case of disagreeing on what's fun or not (I DID find KotOR1 fun to play)? I still plan to play it though, half because I just enjoy being able to run around in an RPG and half because I did buy it for $10 outside of a Steam sale and don't want that blown off.

If you can get past Telos station, the game is quite fun.

In terms of gameplay systems, it's a slightly more polished and complex KotOR 1. If you enjoyed the first one in that regard you'll enjoy the sequel as well. I had a lot of fun playing it.

You need to get past the first hour or two though.

I remember when I purchased Kotor, my wife was out of town for a few days.

I beat it as light side then instantly replayed as dark (much better imo), she came back home with my inlaws and I looked like a homeless person as I had not slept in 2 days.

Do not lose out on that experience :P

How are you guys playing Kotor1, I tried to play it, but it really didn't like my windows 7 pc. Kept crashing. I just gave up and started my first playthrough of Baldur's Gate(1st and 2nd and expansions). I want to get back to Kotor after I'm done with that though.
