Messi is getting exposed though he has just 2 goal so far lol

2 league goals, but 7 goals overall in all competitions. Still a shit goal return for Messi. Ronaldo on the other hand has scored 18 goals so for Man Utd this season.

Rule 35: If a football conversation goes on long enough it will descend into Messi vs Ronaldo.

To answer the original question, no. As good as Mbappe is, and he is probably the best player in the world right now, he isn't even close to 23 year old Messi.

For you guys comparing him to Ronaldo Fenomeno.

Don't forget that by the time Ronaldo was 23, he was already a wonderboy at Cruzeiro at a time that the Brazilian league was comparable to the European leagues, if not way more competitive, and an established footballer at PSV, Real and Inter Milan.

(And his knee cap had already exploded once :) )

I think both Salah ans Lewandowski are better than him at the moment.

I think R9 could have gone on to the best player of all time without those injuries.
Ya for sure. The difference is Messi and Ronaldo have been doing this shit for the last decade. That’s a huge feat. No other players in the sport can do that.

IMHO peak R9 still is better than CR7. Sure, CR7 is a more complete athlete, with a longer career, and a goal machine but young R9 was probably the best striker that the game saw post Pelé. Ask every other defender that played against both.

I like to compare Mbappe to T. Henry. And I think prime Henry was still better. Maybe nostalgia talking, idk.
You're not wrong , prime Henry is still better . Henry played against some of the best defenders in the world like Maldini , Cannavaro and Stam while Mbappe played against cheesemongers

Peak R9 is one of the best players of all time, but better than CR7?

Best season for CR7 was the 2015-2015 season where he scored an outrageous 61 goals in all competitions. Not sure about R9 and CBA to look, but pretty sure it was in the late 90s where he scored just shy of 50 goals in 49 games? Still amazing, but CR7 clearly eclipses this.

If R9 didn't suffer from an knee injury early in this career, then we might be having a different conversation.

Different type of players.
M'bappe will probably be seen as the best goal scorer 9 type of players of all time.
Messi is(was?) a genius game maker before having ridiculously crazy stats, he is and will be seen as the best player of all time by the majority of people.

Yeah. It's just that Messi was on such a sustained high and look at him at 35 (quite astonishing). What was that season he had 91 total goals?

Losing a championship does more damage to a players legacy than winning one ask Tom Brady and LeBron James, major damage to their resume because of losing the big one. Jordan? 6-0. Perfect.

He`s nowhere near as dominant as Maradona was. Obviously a good player, but it`s very questionable that he`s the best player in the world.

I don't follow football closely, never heard of Mbappe before this finale, knew of Messi trought social osmosis for what fells like forever. Messi is Jordan level of famous.
Messi is definitely Jordan level of famous. But I'm talking more about combo of athleticism/skill/knowledge of game. Messi is very skillful/has finesse and is definitely the GOAT of soccer at the moment. But Mbappe is the first player I've seen (in a sport I rarely watch/kind of hate btw altho I've seen Messi/Ronaldo play irl a few times) that made me go "this guy is different from everyone else".

Not even close Messi was beginning his prime years then and a league beyond Mbappe. R9 was the only one on that level imo. CR7 the next after that.

Mbappe is more on the level of someone like Luis Figo or Henry. Prime Kaka, Zidane, and Ronaldinho are also a step above him.
was CR7 actually that good to begin with that he was always considered 2nd to Messi?

Messi had 4 Balon D’Oro at age 23. That should tell you everything you need to know.

Messi didn't deserve all his Balon d'or.
In 2021 it should have been Lewandowski.
In 2010 it should have been Iniesta.

and for CR7
in 2014 it should have been Neuer.

Balon d'or is just the best striker award nowadays. It's a joke.
They should have at least 4 awards, Goalkeeper, defence, midfield & attack.

It got a bit boring when we had a decade where the Balon D'Or went to one of them seemingly by default. Now that we're leaving the Messi/Ronaldo era it'll be nice to hopefully have some more variety there.

Using your logic. He still has two more than Mbappe at same age. My point stands. Messi was a monster of a player back then. Mbappe is nowhere near close to even CR7 level.

D dEvAnGeL I don't think Mbappe is anywhere near Messi, let me make that clear.
I agree with gow3isben gow3isben that he is more on the level of Henry or Figo.

Messi is an alien on the pitch but I don't see in him with the same leadership qualities as Zidane or Cruyff.
He leads by example by that only can take you so far, let's see if he become a manager one day (it didn't go well for Maradona)
I admire him as a player, he is the best still , but let's not get ahead of ourselves and think he is the best at everything.

Mbappe is incredible but I think the only person I've seen play that has Messi's level of talent or above is R9, no one could compete with him before those brutal injury years so painfully early into his career.

Keep an eye on Endrick Felipe. The player Real Madrid signed recently. Touted by a lot of people as the “best player seen from Brasil since Pele”. Only time will tell.

Good call, definitely a huge talent. I'm gonna take another look since it's been a year since I looked into him and he's young enough where a year is a long time. I didn't know he'd signed with Real already, I remember wishing Real was my team when they signed Vinicius so early.
