Is the DS and PSP really competing?

Heres what I see happening. The console crowd with the big money will be interested in the PSP, while the kiddie gameboy crowd will stick to the DS.

Is it possible for them to have two different markets to cater to?

Yes and no.

They're different products, but they both do the same core functionality (play games on the go).

I think with DS Nintendo is trying to get people like your sister, girlfriend, etc. who normally wouldn't play video games to buy one -- look at Nintendogs and Electroplankton.

Game Boy Next will have to directly compete against the PSP though in terms of visual performance, LCD size, and media functionality. p

i don't see the competition or market overlap.

Parents will READILY buy young kids whatever nintendo portable is available at $79-99... some will splurge for the DS. The system is kid-proof (heck even toddler proof). its also plays all the Gameboy games their brothers/sisters had for years. Hand-me-down portable games.

The PSP will be purchased mostly by college-age young adults and some older spoiled teens who have unlimited access to parent's credit cards.

what the hell else have they been doing all this time?

Edit: they've been competing even before release in areas such as developer support

alot of people, especially parents, aren't gonna buy 2 handhelds, so yeah they're in competition whether they want to be or not

Most parents arent going to buy anything above $200 that is delicate like the psp for their kids. Would you trust your kid with it? o_0

If I was a parent, seriously I'd just buy my kid a GBA SP (screw the DS or PSP).

It's easier to carry around and the games and of course the system is cheaper.

Why wouldn't they? Nintendo was talking at E3 2004 at how the DS was aiming for older gamers than their GBA so that puts it right in competition with the PSP.

Case closed.

I think the real competition is between the PSP fanboys and DS fanboys. I would say the PSP fanboys are winning (or is it losing?) as they are far more annoying.

It's kinda funny because usually it's the Nintendo fanboys that are worse than the Sony ones.

If you want proof, just check out these user reviews on the Future Shop website:

Doesn't matter if they actually are competing or not, because they were both released within a very short timespan, they will be compared until the end of time.

Or until the next Game Boy is released.

Whichever comes first.

Given the design of the DS as an alternative/experimental portable, it's poor competition for the PSP which is designed as a more traditional portable. The next GB would likely be a better competitor. They're still competing in the minds of consumers, who equate any portable Nintendo releases as a new Gameboy.
